Extreme hunger: Extreme hunger is a popular familiarity for nearly everybody enduring recovery from any kind of eating disorder. Next to the presence of edema, extreme hunger is one of the most anxiety-provoking elements of recovery for me. It can occur at any time in the recovery process and differs for everybody as to how long it last. For me it is show up, disappear, show up, disappear all the way along. I find myself consuming anywhere from 2000 – 7000 calories in those days. This causes panic and will do for pretty much everyone in recovery. During this process we must remember the nemesis is restriction. When extreme hunger strikes, then we devote to never eating less than the suggested guidelines on any given day no matter what we ate the day before. It is restriction that will drag you to relapse, not answering to the extreme hunger itself. The reasons for this are that the body’s digestive system battles to keep up with pressure. Just think when we start to eat again the digestive system has somewhat a bit of catch-up, just like any mechanism would. We should be responding to the hunger constantly and in no way allowing any restriction to sneak in. I have found to deal with your digestive system still getting up to pace, eating very calorie-dense foods to help. Such as snacking on nuts and seeds and eating small meals to help my digestive system handle as it gets back to normal. Being a hardcore bulimic was exhausting and tore my self confidence and my self worth to shreds. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ I was so deeply ashamed of the disgusting monster that I had become that I lied to absolutely everyone around me in order to maintain some sort of facade about who I was. They could probably see that something was not quite right, but I would happily have had them believe ANYTHING but the truth. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ The number of times I outright lied to my best friends’, co-workers and family members’ faces still haunts me and quite honestly makes me feel a little bit sick. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ The number of friendships that withered and died, the relationship that was so overshadowed and thrown off course by my illness, truth is that most of the time I just wanted these people out of my way so that I could feed my disorder. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ I could see the untruthful, shameful person that I had become and I deeply, deeply hated myself. Bulimia HAD me in its grip and I had everyone around me in my web of lies. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ some of the damage done to the friendships and relationships I destroyed while I was bulimic, but it is my honest hope that by talking about some of these painful and shameful things that I used to do, I can inspire and encourage anyone going through the same, and show you that life doesn’t have to be this way!⁣ ⠀⁣ Stay tuned and moreover stay strong. Recovery isn’t linear!!! Don’t be disheartened that it goes in a million circles and up and down and every which way. It’s normal. Keep making choices that are towards your recovery, not against recovery. No matter what you feel. Though the journey will take you on a twisted path, it will lead you through the places that you need to heal the most.
