BOOK REVIEW⠀ [Love in a Fallen City] Different loves find their way through eastern and western influences.⠀ //⠀ WHAT I LIKED⠀ My edx course only required me to read Eileen Chang’s story story “Sealed Off,” but “Sealed Off” opened my eyes to all Love in a Fallen City has to offer (heh pun). I had to read the entire book. Chang’s works are perfect for readers will little prior knowledge of Chinese history. She focuses on family dynamics - mainly a woman’s place in the world - amidst the cultural clashes of eastern and western thinking across China.⠀ //⠀ Chang’s dainty allusions to major thinking controversies are masterful. She doesn’t beat you over the head with her thoughts, but create a disequilibrium that makes the reader ask why? Sometimes the answer is easter tradition, sometimes the answer is western thinking, sometimes the answer is humans are just plain unpredictable.⠀ //⠀ WHAT I DID’T LIKE⠀ Chinese family relations are specific and daunting. Even the Mandarin language has specific words for nearly every relation (complete with how to address each person) while English has comparably few. A few stories quickly introduce a myriad of characters. Readers are expected to understand the implications of Chinese family relations that will overlay the rest of the story. However, this is something a reader with a Chinese background would easily understand. Furthermore, many characters are given titles “Third Sister” and later given a name. Matching the person to the title/name can be a small puzzle, but it’s worth it.⠀ //⠀ Love in a Fallen City (by Eileen Chang, translated by Karen S. Kingsbury) ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️5/5⠀ //⠀ A SMALL NOTE ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: Karen S. Kingsbury does AN AMAZING JOB in this translation. Her introduction reflections are brilliant. Her footnote annotations give the perfect amount of detail. She is greatly aware of the differences between mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. (which is often hard to find) Fun fact: she taught at a college in the same Taiwanese town I live in!⠀ //⠀ #loveinafallencity #eileenchang #karenskingsburg #chineseculturalrevolution#ellesbookreviews2019#ellereadstheword#elles5starbooks

QOTD: Are you a good person? Or a real person? Or both? What does being “good” or “real” person mean? ⠀ //⠀ GOOD OR REAL PEOPLE⠀ //⠀ “Sealed Off” a short story in Eileen Chang’s Love in a Fallen City states, "In this world, there are more good people than real people” (241). ⠀ //⠀ Being real means being present. It means questioning instead of accepting. Reacting instead of floating. Choosing one's life instead of following a cultural life flow. It means choosing to act against the current for oneself.⠀ //⠀ A real person is in turn with their individual identity while a good person is in tune with everyone’s societal connections. A good person looks to culture morals to inform their decisions. Empathy means understanding how another feels in context. Good people understand the context and fit themselves inside.⠀ //⠀ So…is it better to be real or good? I don’t know. I could take the easy way out and say it’s a balance, but I’d like to know what you think if you have to choose.⠀ //⠀ #eileenchang #loveinafallencity #sealedoff #real#ellescommonplacebook2019#pippinthebookcat

#【天才梦】 #1920s· #EileenChang· #Shanghai #bar #bartime #holiday #havefun #memory #roseisrose #vintagestyle #style

📚BOOK REVIEW📚 Having read some large books lately, it was great to be able to read a short novella and really take the time to appreciate it. In 1940s Shanghai, not everything is as it seems. Jiazhi is a student and member of a small radical group who put together a mission to eradicate a rich and powerful governmental figure - Mr Yi. She is tasked with befriending his wife in the hope of seducing him to his death. However, when the crucial moment is upon them, is she capable of such an act or has she fallen for him? Eileen Chang is an exceptional literary writer. Whilst this is a novella, it is extremely dense, and it is this which I feel makes it such an original and moving piece. The language is so precise that Chang managed to create a powerful rawness to the story, that brings it to life. I’m looking forward to reading her other works. Have you read this or any of Chang’s other works? Which would you recommend next? #eileenchang #lustcaution #espionage #chinesenovel #novella #china #shanghai #anglee #unitedbookstagram #bookshelfie #booksofinsta #penguinclassics #penguinbooks #modernclassic #bookstoread #translation #translatedbooks #bookshelftales

My work, entitled "Eileen Chang: Tierce of Life; 三度: 張愛玲", is in three parts: "Slim & Long; 細丶長" "Desire & Rivalry; 素丶樸" "Eclipse & Nexus; 缺丶圓" "Through the journey of my creative process, I have discovered and been refining the direction I embrace: immaterialism, the yearning for simplicity and basics of life. Most studies of Eileen Chang focused on her literary achievements. I attempt a more philosophical angle which explores the simplicity and basics of Chang's life."

“In death or life, and no matter how far we might be separated — With you, we together made an agreement: I am holding your hand, together with you, I will grow old.” This is one of the saddest poems … Life, death and parting all are major, and they are not controlled by us. Compared with the forces of the outside world, we, humans are such small, such small! However, we insist to say: “I will always be with you, and our whole lifetime, we won’t depart”. – As if ourselves could be able to control the whole situation. —— Eileen Chang 📖🍃 . . . #filmphotography #photography #retroaesthetic #aestheticphotography #eileenchang #vintagefashion

Half a Lifelong Romance by Eileen Chang is a brutal book about the frailty of love when buffeted by the storms of societal expectations and toxic privilege. There is much in the themes of "womanhood and violence” herein that reminds one of the Neapolitan Novels. There are also similar elements of high drama, the cruelty of fate, misunderstandings driven by poor communication. While the book didn't rend me apart like Ferrante's work has done, it offers a hard and unflinching look at love and family. . . #bookish #bookitybookbooks #bookstagram #bookstagramindia #reading #igreads #goodreads #booklove #bookworm #bookaholic #bookaddict #EileenChang #HalfALifelongRomance #ChineseLit #translatedliterature

Saying behind my back in the Mood for Love, It all started with Chow staring hesitatingly and pensively into the hole, as if struggling over whether what little comfort that he may or may not get is worth making a fool of himself. But what did he care, he thought to himself. He went off muttering, with hands cupped, his murmurs haunted and hushed only by the melancholic musical score of Michael Galasso. 🎶 And in the one minute that follows, we, the audience, are taken by the gliding camera into his most intimate confidence. We are plunged into a heartfelt meditation of the impossible love affair between Chow and Su. Like the random monk overlooking from the balcony, we witness the back of his slightly tilting head, his vibrating jawbones, and after he left, the hole plugged with pieces of wilderness by Chow’s final gesture to seal the secret forever and ever - to consign it to memory, or oblivion?! 💭 As an aside, it also reminds me of a quote from one of Eileen Chang’s literary works, Love in a Fallen City:✏️ 有些傻話,不但是要背着人說,還得背着自己 讓自己聽見了也怪難為情的... There’re things that'd better be said behind others’ back and, most of all, your own… Such as… I love you, I love your forever. This quote probably doesn’t appeal very much to a Western audience, who have no problems wearing their heart on their sleeve and saying ‘I love you’ every day. But alas, display of emotions is not the order of the day here, in a Chinese society. To say it like you really mean it only takes away your pride…and replaces it with loads of goosebumps and insecurity.

What a strange book. It started in the middle and would abruptly shift topic almost from paragraph to paragraph giving it a stream of consciousness effect. I’m not sure I grasped everything but i wanted to keep reading anyway. —- It’s about Julie a young woman in Shanghai during World War II, her family issues, her romantic scandals. There’s a feeling of decadence giving way to decay, of being on the cusp of a big cultural shift. The world Julie comes from is provincial and cosmopolitan. She attends a fancy boarding school and her mom travels through Europe. But her mom may also be of the last generation to have had her feet bound. There’s sex, drugs (opium addiction) and a lot of melancholy, making me suspect the author was an “it” girl of her time. —- #eileenchang #littlereunions #translatedliterature #greenteareads2019 #fiction #readingtheworld #womenwriters

Title: Lust, Caution and other stories Author: Eileen Chang Publisher: Penguin Modern Classics Year of Pub: this edition, 2007 ISBN: 9780141034386 . Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ . I found Lust, Caution short enough to be more of a synopsis than a short story. Just as I was getting into the world of the characters it was over. It has inspired me to watch the film adaption by Ang Lee as im hoping given the timeframe of a movie, it should help to felsh out the story to contain more elaborate scenes that my imagination was left to fill the passages of time with. Although it is short i found it to be very immersive and entertaining. I also think Eileen Chang is a very inspiring author for women and the Crime/Thriller genre as she was writing about espionage in the 1940s... paving the way for others like Ian Fleming to pen his first Bond novel. . My No.3 most personally relatable romance scene in TV and film history: Her 🎥 Makes you face your own consciousness head-on, excruciatingly. Makes you push the boundaries and rethink what it means to be human and what it means to love. 💗 Makes you question where’s the line between human and robots and how real our feelings are. Do we not oftentimes as human beings lead a semblance of robotic existence? I, for one, find myself identifying more with Samantha than Theodore, indeed. Are we so arrogant as to think that we are the only living things that can love and write music? Just because we have a more evolved consciousness? 🙋 I am especially touched by the Moon Song🌕 scene where Samantha, alone in her dark and quiet loneliness, sung with her thin, threadlike but powerfully sexy voice 🎶. And naturally enough, love unfolds in moments of connection between these two lonesome figures separated by the farthest stretch of distance. Well, maybe Samatha wasn't as 'lonesome' in the typical sense considering her 1:641 romantic interest, but erm, just because you're having 641 boyfriends or girlfriends, does that really make you less 'lonely'? And I enjoy Joaquin Phoenix’s performance so much and how well he portrays the character’s naïve quirkiness and self-muttering loneliness behind that shadowy, almost invisible, existence that he led. #hermovie #themoonsong #joaquinphoenix #consciousness #robot #movie #movies #movielover #movielovers #moviereview #eileenchang #writer #writers #writersofinstagram #igwriters #igwritersclub #philosophy #philosophical #philosophicalthought

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening to everyone💫 Happy Monday! Life is a beautiful gown that is crawled all over by fleas. By Eileen Chang 張愛玲 Translation from Chinese to learn Chang is the female Chinese author who I introduced yesterday. This is one of her most famous quotes from her debut prose “my dream of genius” (sorry that I could not find the standard English translation, so I just translated it by myself🙇🏻‍♀️) which she published in a magazine in the age of nineteen. I read her description of the contradiction of life from this sentence, but actually there may be more to explore. In her novel Red Rose, White Rose🥀, there is also another well-known quote: Every man may have two such women or at least two. Marry a red rose and eventually she’ll be a mosquito blood streak smeared on the wall, while the white one is moonlight in front of a bed. Marry a white rose, and before long she’ll be a grain of sticky rice that was gotten stuck to your clothes; the red one, by then, is a scarlet beauty mark just over your heart. (Translation from penguin edition) The metaphors in this sentence are considered to be worthwhile to ponder. There are some comments online suggesting that they could not understand well because of the unfamiliarity to Chinese culture. I agree that you might need some time to dig into the culture part 🧐before you read most Chinese literature, or you might find it hard🥴 to read through the books. I hope you enjoy my share! 🤗

💡Good evening, good morning and good afternoon to all! Last week I heard about a man who majored in Chinese literature (sorry, with no clear memory, something like this) said that his favorite Chinese writer is Eileen Chang, who was one of the modern Chinese writers in the raised from the period of Republic of China. Her works are most related to the love issue and the world around her, from her own unique perspective and writing techniques. However, most people would think of her marriages and her “tragic” life and death first when talking about her. While the whole world always focus more on her personal life, her works are indisputably more worthy of notes. 📖Romances as a collection of short stories and novellas, including Love in a Fallen City, one of her most famous works, is the one that I recommend you to read first. Lust, Caution, which was later adapted to movie directed by Ang Lee, gains both dispute and appreciation. She attempted to restore the reality of life, of love, of the city, of everything. Her works definitely require more thorough review rather than just a glimpse. By the way, she also wrote several film scripts📃 after her success in novels. Actually, I could not tell you more but leave you to discover by yourself. I hope you would like her works. My only advice is: Don’t believe in other’s accounts too much, read and feel her works🤲. Enjoy the last few hours of weekend time!🙋🏻‍♀️

Enjoy the last few hours of weekend time!🙋🏻‍♀️)?>
