Sometimes I am mystified by a state of mind that was taken away from me when I was seemingly and helplessly caught up, ensnared in the game and cycle of a narcissist. ⠀ ⠀ I had lost touch with the beauty and purity of a calm, centered, balanced and serene mind...for years now that I look back. ⠀ ⠀ The haunting and hoovering a narcissist will do to ensure you stay hooked cannot be underestimated. ⠀ ⠀ That’s why you have to build up the will power and strength to break free from it and block them everywhere. ⠀ Do what you must. Therapy. Reading books about personality disorders. Joining support groups. All the self care and self love imaginable.⠀ ⠀ Remember to be gentle and patient with yourself too. You are in recovery. It takes time for the shine and spirit of you reemerge. ⠀ ⠀ You are in shock. I had a really interesting conversation with a client recently about empathy. She said she generally thought she was empathetic but then sometimes a situation would come up where she didn’t want to say yes to what someone else was asking of her so she was doubting this about herself. ⠀ ⠀ __⠀ This was the start of a really important conversation because I have seen that many women confuse being empathetic with being so understanding that they then overextend themselves in a way that ends up depleting them and creating resentment in their lives. ⠀ ⠀ __⠀ We can be empathetic and still have boundaries. We can be deeply feeling and caring and still protect our time and attention for the things we want to do …. without this making us wrong or bad for saying no to someone else. ⠀ ⠀ __⠀ Often we are in this pattern because our sensitivity prevents us from setting boundaries to avoid hurting someone else's feelings or wanting to be seen as ‘helpful’ or ‘good.’ When we don’t have a sense of ourselves and our own energetic boundaries, it can be really difficult to know and ask for what we need.⠀ ⠀ __⠀ These patterns start early and working with them on the level of energy and our bodies is the only way I have seen them truly change. Understanding them can be helpful but when you’re changing an ingrained pattern, working with the fear energy that comes up when you’re saying ‘no’ or dealing with someone pushing back on you because they are used to you being a certain way through body based practices actually changes the pattern on a cellular level. ⠀ ⠀ __⠀ Want to learn more? Born like this, and it's not easy. I've struggled with this since childhood, and suffer from anxiety attacks even now. There is no real solution either, it's something empaths have to live with.
