A Tradition Since 1954, Aug 09, 2018 |||| Knoxville, Iowa is my hometown. Every August it is host to the sprint car world's main event, the Knoxville Nationals. I worked the races as a teenager, over the fryer in the main concession stand. ||| I returned in 2018. I had been back only a handful of times these last ten years. \\ My intention was to push away the easy dismissal I'd acquired over the years towards the town and the event and the people therein. \\ While I succeeded in this to some degree, as with any engagement with a subject laden with stereotypes, inevitably some will be fulfilled. And so the whiteness and maleness of the fans was overwhelming at times. I want to extend the courtesy of acknowledging, though, that most of the fans were born in to a life where this, every weekend from May to Sep, is the highlight of their year, and this week specifically the highlight of highlights, and that people travel from all across the country, and even from Australia and New Zealand and South Africa (where sprint car racing is also popular) just to come to my small hometown of maybe 8,000 people, and for a short while the population spikes with added thousands. None of us can escape the confines of capitalism, and we all must make do with the life we are given, and make of it what we will. And while certainly there is room to critique our actions (or lack thereof) towards each other, we should not critique each other for the little leisure time we are afforded. I gained a new appreciation of the joy found within this bit of racing culture, found within my hometown, which as a kid I desperately wanted to escape. And having escaped and returned, I can return again with a more appreciative eye. || || | | | #documentaryphotography #middleamerica #everydayruralamerica #everydayusa #myAmericanVision #burnmagazine #EverydayIowa #Iowa #flakphoto #knoxvillenationals #everydayIowa #IowaInColor #sprintcars #sprintcarracing #dirttracklife #racinglife #PrairieStreets #streetphotography #photostory #photodocumentary #everydayeverywhere

One of the places I always seem to check out when I come back to the Eastern Shore is Crisfield, the Crab Capital of the World, situated right on the Chesapeake Bay. I wasn't as drawn to it when I lived here and actually worked in town for the police department. But I find my way down to the Depot on every visit. When my father used to visit us on the farm, he would drive down there the second morning every time. And he knew nothing about the Shore. Could it be I'm becoming my dad? I can't say I miss the place, but I do enjoy seeing the crab boats coming in and the folks hanging out on the dock of the bay. Maybe it's got something to do with the time rolling away. at Crisfield City Dock

I'm stoked to share my first assignment for @espn on West Virginia’s unique culture around moonshine, football, and the Mountaineers. I met some truly awesome and fascinating people who taught me the economic and legal history of the strong stuff, the difference between sugar shine and shine made with corn whiskey, and in a yellow-leaved holler in the dark of night, how to make it in small batches. Mostly, I learned how moonshine is a point of pride that brings people together and marks times to celebrate. From the story by Jake Trotter: "Don't take West Virginians as nothing but hillbillies that drink moonshine blah, blah, blah. That's not who we are. Moonshine is a way to bring generations together... and West Virginia's one big family." Thanks to @jayski34 for having me along for this one and for all the people who were so helpful to me, I can't wait to come visit again. - - http://kwese.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25196726/west-virginia-mountaineers-moonshine-college-football-tradition-tailgates ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #mountaineers #wvu #football #wvufootball #appalachia #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #rustbelt #moonshine #makermovement #history #gomountaineers #collegefootball #reportage #justgoshoot #everydaywv #everydayruralamerica #inspireatlas #rustbelt #tailgate #westvirginia at Milan Puskar Stadium

Mr. Abdoulaye, a Nigerian immigrant scratches a lottery ticket in a convenient store at Lynn, Massachusetts. He spends around $150 everyday on lottery. Last year Americans spent a total of $73.5 billion on traditional lottery tickets, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. According to Victor Matheson, an economics professor at the College of Holy Cross and an expert on lotteries, low income players spend a much larger percentage of their income on tickets than wealthy players. Mr. Abdoulaye is none other than those low income Americans who still believers try turn out their luck while spending a big portion of his income for a better life. #everydayamerica #everydayruralamerica #dailylife #lottery #lotteryticket #hope #dream #immigrantsmakeamericagreat #immigrants at Lynn, Massachusetts

Bill Warrick has been a push truck driver since 1986. And he spent all that time in this ‘86 @ford #F150 He’s made some cosmetic changes, though. He took out the bench and installed seats. And his wife etched sprint cars in the back glass panels. // ~’some guys just want a little shove, some guys want to fight you’—sprint cars get jump started, and they’re holding the brake down when the truck takes off, and it does take off. It jerks you back into the seat, bounces your camera off your forehead. Mud spits up in specks when you put your head out the window. //// Later, sitting idle in a caravan of push trucks lying in wait just to the side of the track’s entrance until they’re needed again for starting a driver running hot laps, or to even out the track’s mud a bit, or to actually get the drivers each individually going so they can all assemble on the track into their own herd and grumble to the starting flag, you can feel a sense of pride ooze from Bill about the role he plays in bringing this collective roar which can be heard across town nearly every weekend sometimes past midnight. Staring up at a couple thousand people in the stands, the smell of cigarettes and the radio so low it’s basically off, I looked up at the faded baby blue VA water tower looming over the track fence in soft fluorescent light from the field next to the campgrounds and thought it looked pretty. I should’ve known. The empty VA campus has been molding slowly for around half a decade, or more, and at one time Kirkwood College was going to purchase it, another a company that wanted to demolish all the buildings and parse the land out, another they were going to be renovated and offer as public housing. We all know how those stories come and go. But this last idea, public housing, led us to conversational territory around migration and others, where suddenly us two new friends came to see just how much of strangers we were, and we had to engage in another level of politeness in order to keep the experience pleasant, which we did. And are likely both the better for it. ///// Aug 2018 //// edit: excuse the very slight miscrop in the third photo 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ thank you :) at Knoxville, Iowa

Centralia, WA, founded by former slave George Washington, is a timber and coal town between Seattle and Portland. The coal plant is shutting down to be replaced by solar installations. Bob Guenther, seen here, worked in the coal plant for thirty years but he’s a proponent of the new solar project and the state ballot initiative I-1631 that would take steps to curb carbon fuel emissions. . Today, residents of Washington State will vote on whether to adopt a carbon fee, an ambitious policy that aims to combat climate change by charging oil companies and other polluters for the right to emit greenhouse-gas pollution. If the measure passes, Washington would immediately have one of the most aggressive climate policies in the country. The proposal would allocate money raised by the new fee to build new infrastructure to prepare the state for climate change. It would generate millions to fund new public transit, solar and wind farms, and forest-conservation projects in the state; it would also direct money to a working-class coal community and a coastal indigenous tribe. If it passes, Washington would become the first state in the country—and, in fact, the first large government anywhere in the world—to impose a price on carbon by ballot question. . It is a visual exploration of place, community, and cultural identity in the coal mining boomtowns of SE Ohio, Appalachia. ———————————————————————————————————————————————— #littlecitiesofblackdiamonds #seohio #appalachia #appalachian #coalminingtown #boomtown #lcbd #newtopographics #ohio #everydayappalachia #rurallife #everydayruralamerica #folk #folkphotography #folklife #subjectivelyobjective #blackdiamond #blackdiamonds #somewheremagazine #anotherplacemagazine #thought_landscape #fndit #americana #myfeatureshoot #aintbad
