“I have German ancestors that helped settle Douglas, Washington and built the Lutheran Church there (on my mother’s side) and a Gramma on my dad’s side that came to Waterville in a covered wagon. The story I love most was when my dad’s family sold their horses and mules and put them on the train to send back to the Midwest as they had bought their first tractor and Gramma was telling me about it 50 years later with tears running down her cheeks! I still tear up myself when I think about it. Both of my parents were born and raised in Waterville. Dad always had cattle and horses growing up and lived on a wheat farm. He went into the service and after WWII he came back and started farming on his own. My dad had to quit wheat farming because of his asthma and he developed skin cancer. That’s when we moved to Monroe where he was a meat cutter. He had his own meat packing plant. I grew up around cattle and showed steers in 4-H as a kid. In fact, my Dad used a photo of me with my steer for his meat packing advertisement. I met my husband in Monroe where he taught school. Eventually, we moved to Eastern Washington and bought a farm where we raised up to 130 head of cattle. I never shared the fact that while I was out checking cows I would carry a couple of loaves of bread and feed the coyotes. The coyotes were always waiting for me and one of the females would come up close wagging her tail. I always respected the fact that they weren’t here to hurt anyone, just hungry. I can tell that story now, because I have moved off of that place and no one would care. I’ve always cared about the welfare of animals, whether wild or domestic. I’ve lived in a number of different places and it just seems like there is always something good about each area. We now live in Oklahoma and are down to 25 Limousin cattle on leased pasture. I have lived a lot of places but, have been around cattle my whole life.” #agriculture #farmhistory #Limousincattle

As long as I can remember, I have always loved trees! They exude such strength and wisdom, surviving the seasons and weathering many storms. Yesterday, I was hiking in the Northeast of VT along an old carriage road lined with some of the oldest maple trees I have ever seen. All of a sudden, I came across an old abandoned farmstead. This picture shows parts of an old, rusty hay bailer. A maple tree, determined to survive and grow, grew right through a wheel, lifting it off the ground. It was so cool to see. #trees #strongtrees #antiquefarmequipment #abandonedplaces #abandonedfarms #farmhistory #hiking #hikingadventures #vthistory #oldfarm #strangethings #farmland

Adding finishing touches to this sweet Tunis sheep. Tunis sheep are primarily raised for meat, but they have beautiful coloring. They are one of the oldest breeds of livestock developed in America and have an amazing history. . 🐑🐑🐑 Tunis became a recognizable breed by the late 18th century. They adapted well to the mid Atlantic and Southeast regions, where they became very popular. Tunis sheep almost disappeared during the Civil War, due to the widespread slaughter of Southern livestock. The breed was saved by a man named Maynard Spigener from South Carolina, who concealed the last flock of Tunis sheep on his land. After the war these sheep were mostly raised in the Great Lakes region and New England, but they are beginning to reappear in the South. In 1854, he married Ann Leedy. They had nine children! In 1874, he purchased a one hundred and ninety acre farm in Washington Township. Wiseman was a successful, respected citizen throughout Hancock County. continuing a century of apple picking in this blenheim orange tree. perhaps the painter’s chickens would crowd about her orchard ladder, perhaps the old carpenter’s sheep would. when this little acreage was part of the great old collins orchard over a hundred years ago, it’s likely there were quick young gleaners that harvested the lot for cider, or perhaps just the family, the children nipping up into the highest trees. the three collins brothers were still here in their nineties, still picking. we’re glad to keep up the tradition, the kids and i. at Salt Spring Island

Hometown history: . Farmers around my hometown of Stanford, IL (just found out that this includes my grandpa!) once grew popcorn for Cracker Jack. 🍿 . Harvested ears were taken to these cribs in town. We know that the main crib went up in 1936 and the round cribs were added in 1958, but haven’t figured out how long Cracker Jack contracted popcorn to be grown here. Notice how gaps between slats in the larger crib are really narrow compared to a regular corn crib. 🌽 . These cribs are conveniently located where the Chicago-Alton railroad came through town, so it was easy to ship popcorn up to Cracker Jack’s facilities in Chicago. The large white crib still stands today. . . #history #aghistory #ruralhistory #hometown #crackerjack #popcorn #farm #farming #farmhistory #corncrib #oldbuilding #agchat #agriculture #agdaily at Stanford, Illinois

I never got to meet my Grandfather on my Dad's side of the family. However, I've always felt like I knew him because of the way everyone spoke of him. He was a man who loved to laugh but mostly wanted to make you laugh. My Dad was born in 1934 and lived all his childhood on the farm before joining the Army. They didn't have a lot of money if any at times...of course no t.v. and couldn't afford a radio until Dad was almost grown. So one thing my Grandfather would do is tell stories to the kids ( his and all the ones in walking distance). He made up characters to make it interesting and one of those characters was a Gygooter....it usually was up to something all the time. His stories are long gone but the Gygooters, Ginkywonks and Ziggerfats have been in my heart from Paw Thrift. Thus our new GYGOOTER SAUCE---ALL ORGANIC BBQ SAUCE. NON GMO AND NO CORN SYRUP ADDED. IT HAS A SWEET TO HEAT FLAVOR. ITS BEEN TRIED AND TESTED AND LOVED BY MANY. NOW YOU CAN FALL IN LOVE WITH IT TOO!! 12oz Bottle. $9.99 Available starting next week in limited supply. Goes great on our Berkshire pork and our chicken!! #thamesfarm #bbq #bbqsauce #organicbbqsauce #farmhistory #familymemories #itsallaboutfamily #handmedownrecipe

@corvabellafarm

Time for a #TBT One of the most frequent questions we get about the farm, is "Why is your farm called Corva Bella?" Or, "What is Corva?" or "Do you like crows or something?" This one goes way back to Corva, Italy. I'm not sure of the approximate year, but I estimate my Grandfather (Dante Giuseppe Rosario Calderan) to look around 9-10, which would make it 1922 or 1923. Corva is my Grandfather's birthplace in Friuli Venezia-Giulia, the most Northeastern province of Italy. "Corvo" is also the Italian word for crow. Bella is not only the Italian word for beautiful, but also relates to my Father's family lineage, which is Bell. Our farm's logo subtly nods to the historical flag of FVG through inclusion of the color yellow and use of a bird (crow/raven) as these symbols loosely relate to the golden eagle of Aquileia displayed on the flag, which flies over our farm. This region of Italy has a unique social and culinary history, that is very different from the rest of Italy. It's also one of Italy's five autonomous regions. The capital of FVG is Trieste, and Venice (Venezia) is not located in the region, but is South of it, in Veneto. You can read more about our farm's history and namesake, here: https://corvabella.com/about/ #farmhistory #familyhistorian #famigliaCalderan #Calderan #friuliveneziagiulia #FVG #corva #italianAmerican #friulana

“The barn most easily identified with North Carolina, having changed little over several decades, is the flue-cured tobacco barn...Tobacco barns were at one time so numerous in the state that an astute observer counted 200 of them on a 60-mile stretch of Highway 86 from Hillsborough to Danville, Va. These buildings were constructed in relation to roads, fields, and other farm buildings and were never placed near a house. The construction of one was a major social event, taking 12 to 15 men an entire day...” For more on tobacco barns visit: https://www.ncpedia.org/barns . . #throwbackthursday #tbt #farmhistory #tobaccobarns #barningtobacco #barn Photo: Looping Tobacco, Granville County, NC.
