Its not very often that we get a chance to market a farm for a family that has worked the fields with a horse drawn plow. This farm has been owned by the same family for over 100 years. We take this privilege seriously. We are thankful for everyone who trusts us to sell their family's most valuable asset. #farmandlandsales #centuryfarm #horsedrawnplow #aasnessauctioneers #landbydennis #farmhistory #landandfarm

This was a rather cool round barn. This was built in 1910 by Dr Ryan. The boards were soaked and put into forms to give them proper curves. The beams were made by laminating curved stock. There were two overhead tracks in the lower level for transporting either manure or feed.A hand operated switch mechanism. So cool the advances here. I was glad to see that there is a group working to maintain the historical structure. I took my family camping here and was able to tour this barn. #woodworking #barn #farmhistory #antique #roundbarn

The Washington Island Farm Museum is an interesting outdoor museum that showcases the Scandinavian farms of the local descendants. Many came to Door County and this island in the late 1800s. There are several original buildings, as well as homestead objects, farming tools and equipment, and farm machinery in display. There are several farm animals you can feed for a small fee too. It is a nice size museum and is nice for children too. #farmmuseum #farmhistory #doorcountywi #familyholiday #familyvacation #farmlife #livinghistoryfarms #washingtonislandwi #washingtonislandwisconsin #wisconsinfarm #wisconsin #outdoormuseum #wisconsinmuseum #wisconsin

Just got these amazing large garden bells in. Bell fact of the day.... The absolute acceptance of bells came in 15th century, after the rise of Renaissance started changing architecture and the way of life all around the Europe. During that time, elaborately created bells found their home in grand bell towers. By 17th century, people started seeing that bells could be used as sophisticated musical instruments. Fun family fact... our momma had a big dinner bell she would ring to get my dad and brothers to come eat when they were out to pasture. Gotta love the old dinner bell 🛎

“Farming is a way of life.” October 7, 1998. Jimmy Abma Jr. (4th generation) had one his first solo debuts in our local newspaper. At the young age of 11, Jimmy was given a small piece of property here to have his very own “farm.” He invested his own money to purchase the seed and worked tirelessly everyday that summer with the help of his brother Josh, sister Joy and cousin Kelly to ensure a successful crop. He grew watermelon, yellow and red cherry tomatoes, pumpkins, jalapeño peppers, Italian & regular eggplant, and carrots. After packing what vegetables he’d picked, he would bring them to our Market where his grandfather, Jim Abma (2nd generation), would inspect the produce and pay him fair market price for his goods. All of this was a great learning experience and instilled valuable work ethic and his passion for farming at a young age. 🍉 🍆 🍅 🎃 🥕 🚜 👨‍🌾 . . . . #throwbackthursday #abmasfarm #history #farmhistory #wykoff #throwbackthursdayfarmedition #backintheday #njfarmer #njfarm #bergencounty #

#FarmingFame George Washington, our nation's first President and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, was also a farmer, or more accurately, a planter, since he had a large acreage and used slave labor. At his Mount Vernon estate he farmed tobacco and wheat. The Farmall H. This tractor has got some history. After the war it wasn't as easy as just going to the store to buy a tractor. It was a long process and wait time to get your tractor. My Grandpas uncle ordered this tractor but he had actually wanted wider tires so he gave his nephew the opportunity to buy it. He took him up on that offer and that's what he used for all of his field work. Can you imagine all the hours spent on the hottest days of the year without a cab or even a padded seat? After there were new tractors on the farm the Farmall lost its purpose. A while later it was restored by my Dad and Uncles. At this time it was either used for pounding posts or raking hay. Then I came along who started using it to work my riding arena. I spent hours going around and around working that soil until it was perfect to run barrels. After that phase its sat again, parked in the shed. Now with our chicken enterprise the old Farmall fires up every morning to move the chickens to fresh pasture. I love seeing it sitting there with a purpose once again.

It's 1961, and my dad, the youngest of his siblings, is 6 years old. He's on the left here. Astride the rest of the very patient horse are a nephew and two nieces of his. As the baby of the family, seven years younger than the next-youngest sibling, he was almost more of a grandchild to my grandma and grandpa. They had raised most of their young family in the Depression and during the war, so having another child in the relative prosperity that came afterwards must have seemed so different.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They had managed to scrabble their way through, hanging on to their land. In the depths of the Depression, Grandpa Roy once listed all 120 acres for sale, along with the house, for $27,000. Fortunately, though it must have seemed agonizing at the time, no one wanted to buy it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I think about that a lot, as I cultivate some of that same land today. What would it have felt like, to be so convinced that there was no other way.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm deeply grateful for the community that allows us to continue this work. I'm deeply grateful for each one of you who says by their presence that the believe in and care about local farms. I'm grateful for the conversations I get to have, and for those of you who look at the farm with clear eyes, seeing not a vestige of the past but a path towards something new.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm sorry you can't meet my grandpa, or my dad, but I'm sure they're grateful too, for the way we continue building from their foundation toward a future - together.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #knowyourfarmer #familyfarm #farmstories #simplebeauty #modernfarm #farmhistory

The irises hve been blooming so beautifully for a while now. They were growing here on the farm when Ben's grandma and grandpa moved here in 1954. When Ben's mum and dad were building the house after the original house sadly burned in the early 1980s, they moved the irises to the vegetable garden- to be planted later in a new flower bed. "Old-fashioned Beauties" ~ I love the tinge of burgandy in these white peonies. The delicate petals. The subtle soft sculpting at their edges. The intricate way they gather together to create a stunning blossom. These perennial beauties were planted long ago, perhaps by my husband's Great Aunt or Great-Grandmother, or maybe by the original homesteaders of this property. Regardless, they've withstood the test of time and bloom without hesitation every June. They're hardy, dependable, resilient and determined. Much like farmers and their families who have lived here over the generations. I'm grateful to have these old-fashioned beauties grace my flower bed. A lovely reminder of the women who tended to this farmyard long before me. 💗 . . . #peonies #peonyseason #perennial #whiteblossoms #delicateflowers #oldfashionedflower #flowersofinstagram #flowerphotography #flowersoftheday #flowergarden #memorygarden #rememberwhen #farmhistory #farmlife #prairielife #mymanitoba #outmybackdoor

The year is 1957 and James Abma (2nd generation) is collecting freshly laid eggs on our custom egg collector. 🔹Fun fact: Mr. Abma designed, constructed and built this one-of-a-kind egg collector to help make the collection process more efficient. Our “basket eggs” are picked fresh every morning from our coup and can sometimes still be warm for your picking! You can’t get eggs any fresher than this! So stop on in and taste the difference. Check out this story, now on the Classic Tractor Fever YouTube Channel! **Click Link In Profile** to watch now! Lee Zylstra of Alta, Iowa has been collecting International Harvester for quite a long time. One of his prized pieces is his Rare 1969 International Harvester 1256 Wheatland with Front Wheel Assist. Not only does it have the Coleman front wheel assist, but it also has rock shaft and three point hitch. There was low production for the 1256 with front wheel assist. The tractor has an International Harvester 6-cylinder, 407 cubic-inch diesel engine that can do about 116 horsepower on the PTO and 102 horsepower on the drawbar. Back in 1969 this tractor would have cost you about $10,700 US dollars or about US $75,655 dollars in 2019. ‘Tre’ in Cornish means ‘the farmstead of’. A certain Dethick is likely to have farmed here in medieval times. The farm’s history stretches back more than 700 years and clues everywhere: from the musket shot from the English Civil War that we still find in ploughed earth to the fields names redolent of stories and people long past: Lantivers, Searchlight, Babylon, Searles Moor, Courtney’s. You can read more about the history of Tredethick and its cottages on our website (link in bio) under ‘Blogs’.
