We believe this stone, which sits in front of the farmhouse, was used for mounting horses and wagons back in the day. ... It’s easy to picture white folks in breeches and long skirts heading into town. But here, an enslaved man probably held the horses or may have driven the wagon. This image is the full one, and it’s the image of most places owned by people in the South until just over 150 years ago. ... For us, the story of this place is made far richer - if also harder - when it’s told in full. ... ... #farmhouse #history #virginiahistory #blackhistory #slavery #enslaved #farmhistory #farmlifebestlife #farmlife #oldhouse #oldhouselove #rurallife #oldhousecharm #farmerlife

The sun is shining today. Love looking through this doorway. From up inside the roof, it appears that this doorway was once the entrance to the original four room stone dwelling, built by Italian winemakers around 1840. The entry and door to the front Verandah seen in the background was added on later by the Irish dairy farmers who took over in the 1870s 🐄 #farmhistory #farmhousestyle #stonehouse #centralvictorianhighlands

Happy monday from the farm ! Over Thanksgiving break I'm sad to say but we lost one of these big giant walnut trees but I'm glad I was able to capture it in this photo and many others before it fell. We are planning to have it milled in to some wood and put it back in to the home somehow so it will have a good story to tell one day ! In owning a farm and a piece of history it is important to us to keep the materials true to farm and keep the history alive. #walnuttree #mamabeesfarm #history #farmhistory #ourstory #keephistoryalive

{ Uncovering Farm History } “We found a box in the attic...” is how it all started. Boxes of old photos, newspaper clippings, deeds from the 1800’s, and an old family Bible. You see, Daddy Pete isn’t a random name that we picked out of a hat to name our products, he was a real person. His fifth generation grandson still runs the dairy part of the farm and his fourth generation grandson is the owner and operator of Daddy Pete’s Plant Pleaser. There’s a lot of Farm History in these boxes and some that we’ve never seen before. And we would like to share what we find with you! Follow us and we will uncover what’s in these boxes, it may look a lot like what your grandparents talked about during the time when they grew up. 📷: @blueamberphoto ( Daddy Pete’s fifth generation granddaughter ) #daddypetesplantpleaser #farmhistory at Daddy Pete Farms

The sun is out today! We get a lot of questions about this little building on the farm. It's been called the pumphouse for a couple decades, because it had the farm well in it/under it. We just dug a new well over a year ago now to better supply our farm than that one. But we still call it the pumphouse. Back in the day when this was a small dairy farm, it was the milk house and there was a matching barn! Old pictures we have seen only show broken remnants of the barns walls in the 70s. We have dug into the rocks and mortar though putting in water and electric to our buildings. In case you didn't know, we have TONS of rocks here! So plenty of material for the Craftsmen who built the barn and milk house. I can't imagine how much work it must've been. We will do our best to preserve this piece of farm history. It needs a new roof, maybe a gambrel roof to match the house. I have aspirations of making it into a farm store someday. #farmhistory #pumphouse #milkhouse #rocks #catsofinstagram at Nelson Grass Farm

🍎Marlboro needs your help to save the local "Farmerettes" building, an intact WWI Woman’s Land Army Dormitory where women were trained to work in agriculture while men were at war. It is an amazing piece of local history, especially to Marlboro (a town built on agriculture and with generations of farmers) and as we honor the centennial of WWI. They are looking for volunteers (with some experience) to help move the structure as the site it is currently on is being developed. If you or anyone you know has experience, please reach out to them on Facebook, or I can pass along your suggestions! I recommend checking out their Facebook page for more information and some really great historic photos! ➡️ Help Save Marlborough’s “Farmerettes” Building. Oakland Plantation (originally called Bermuda) is one of the 2 plantations owned by Cane River Creole NHP. Jean Pierre Emanuel Prud'homme , founder of the plantation, began farming in 1785 and received a Spanish land grant in 1789. The plantation's first crops were tobacco and indigo, but swiched to cotton in the 1800s. The Prud'homme's were the first family west of the Mississippi River to farm cotton on a large scale, which enslaved labor increased on the plantation. After the Emancipation, many of the slaves on the plantation didn't know where to go. Therefore, many stayed on the plantation as tenant farmers and sharecroppers as late as the 1970s. Today, many descendants from slaves/tenants who lived on the plantation come back for family reunions. . . #canerivernationalheritagearea #canerivercreole #canerivercreolenationalhistoricalpark #oaklandplantation #prudhomme #nachtitoches #onlylouisiana #louisianahistory #slaveryhistory #plantationhistory #blackhistory #africanamericanhistory #farmhistory #history #usahistory at Oakland Plantation

Carriage Town Orchards continued to grow season after season. Karen and Glenn soon needed help to keep the farm moving and began to welcome agricultural interns into their home. Safe to say their little farmhouse was packed to the brim with 3 interns, 2 babies and themselves.⁣ ⁣ Cider Hill Farm was still in opperation by Glenn’s parents. They originally purchased the farm as a retirement hobby farm, which lent itself to a more laid back lifestyle. However with 120 acres the possibilities were endless.⁣ ⁣ After 5 years of growth at Carriage Town Orchards, Karen and Glenn quickly realized they were running out of space. With only 15 acres of land, the couple had maxed out of growing space. Having reached a point of equal equity they made the decision in 1992 to merge businesses with Glenn’s parents and grow Cider Hill Farm to what we know today! ⁣ ⁣ Photos above show farm store in early 90’s to today, along with some other shots. #ciderhillfarm #itsmyfarm #ciderhill #countrystore #farmstore #farmhistory at Cider Hill Farm

Around 1870 - A large shipment of wool from the stations Spring shear was being rowed to a ship anchored in Palliser Bay, and the ship’s captain informed the young farmhand that he would not accept this as every bale of wool being shipped had to carry a registered identification mark to show its origin, and these bales did not, so they would need to return to shore, and be collected on the next wool-run. The tired farmhand was not about to row back after that hard work, so he agreed with the captain that if he was to use the rowlock from his boat, and borrow a pot of paint from the ship, he could brand the wool bales. This is where the Wharekauhau brand was born and today it still stands for the same qualities of uniqueness, hard work and individuality which inspired it 🇳🇿 #rowlock #history #wharekauhau #newzealand #farmhistory #kiwiingenuity #farminglegend #wharekauhaustation #relaischateaux #luxurylodgesnz #nzmustdo #wharekauhaubrand #1870 #traveldeeper #travellife #farmhandsstory at Wharekauhau Luxury Lodge

While the town of West Branch was a farming community, Jesse Hoover also worked as a blacksmith and owned his own shop. His son, Herbert Hoover, did not grow up to become a farmer but he did rely on them throughout his life. He worked on a farm during the summer while he lived in Newberg as a child and some of his earliest political and humanitarian accomplishments were centered around providing food to millions of people who could not acquire it on their own. I mentioned in the first post that we came here as a commune, which sadly didn’t last. Two harsh wet winters and social strains took their toll, and in January 1975 the 135 acre farm was put on the market, since it was owned by the parents of one of the departing members. We had set up a company, Whole Harvest Ltd, to rent the farm, but had no tenancy agreement so we prepared for departure during the bleak late winter months. However, this wasn’t to be, since at the time of the exodus of our co-communards Stuart and Stephanie, we had a student/woofer/brother of a friend living with us in the caravan. He had inherited some money from his grandfather and offered to buy the 135 acres for £37,500! His name was Nick Rebbeck, and without his act of generosity we wouldn’t be here today. Here is a picture of Nick taken in 1997, along with myself and my daughter Barley. Nick drove a grey Renault 4 with a pheasant feather tied to the dashboard-mounted rear windscreen, and loved the music of David Bowie and Grace Jones. He was a Leo with a wonderful sense of humour. After purchasing the farm, he financed a programme of improvements under the EU funded farm and horticultural development fund (FHDS). Because our farm was classified as less favoured we got amazing rates - 70% for drainage and 50 % for buildings, roads and fencing. Part of the programme was a new Hosier 6 abreast milking parlour, installed in 1976 and not replaced until 2011! #dairy #dairyfarm #cows #farmlife #farmhistory #farmingwales at Holden Farm Dairy

There's something about red farmhouses and barns that I just love! ❤️ . Here's a Fun Fact I learned from the Farmers Almanac: "Hundreds of years ago, many farmers would seal their barns with linseed oil, which is an orange-colored oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant. To this oil, they would add a variety of things, most often milk and lime, but also ferrous oxide, or rust. Rust was plentiful on farms and because it killed fungi and mosses that might grow on barns, and it was very effective as a sealant. It turned the mixture red in color. When paint became more available, many people chose red paint for their barns in honor of tradition." ☺️ . . . #autumncolors #farmhouse #gooutsidemore #redbarns #barnsofinstagram #visitvortex #orangemagazine #naturewalk #farmhistory #backyardbirding #naturephotography #gooutlocal #birdsandblooms #backyardphotography #opwbackyardfunfacts #ourpieceofthewoodsIG #historyfacts #wallkillny #orangemagazine #upstateny #hvmag #visitorangecountyny #orangecountyny #orangecountyny_nature #natureupclose #naturecloseup #naturebeauty #naturephotography #gooutside #naturelove #lovetheoutdoors #jwphotography at Wallkill, New York

For National Mule Day, A look back to when my photo of Pat and Jane graced the cover of Mules and More magazine! Pat and Jane are a lovely, matched pair of a Percheron Draft Mules. They live at the History Farm in Hermann, MO. I captured this image on the hilltop during a Civil War re-enactment. This photo of Pat & Jane, also hung in the Missouri Governors Mansion for two years as part of the Best of Missouri Hands exhibit. I was one of eight juried BOMH photographers selected to have my work on exhibit in the mansion. It was a big honor as thousands of visitors, especially 4th graders, saw my photo. Fourth graders take a field trip to Jefferson City as part of their lesson on government. Many learn during this time that the mule is Missouri’s State Animal. Personally, I am a HUGE fan of mules and donkeys, I even went to college in Warrensburg, where our mascot was the mule. Scarecrow on a newly cleared field with stumps near Roxboro, North Carolina, July 1939. . Despite their spooky connotation and association with fall, scarecrows were actually used more in the spring and summer to defend newly planted crops from birds eager to eat seeds and plantlings. . "Today, many young people may be more familiar with scarecrows from Halloween decorations than the field. . Some farmers prefer to tend land the old-fashioned way, eschewing tractors and engine-driven plows and putting up scarecrows to watch over their small acreage. But for the most part, the scarecrow has vanished from the American landscape, replaced by chemicals and by high-tech mechanisms such as a digital scarecrow with infrared sensors that emits ultrasonic waves. The scarecrow has hung on in some parts of the world. But the hay-man is rarely seen in the U.S. and other regions where large scale agriculture is common, save for in films and literature." . Hi, you guys!! Happy Monday! I hope your morning is going good so far and that your weekend was restful! When we moved into our home a little over a year ago we found many treasures in the barn, this old trunk of my grandfather’s being one. There was another trunk in the barn that was filled to the brim with old handwritten letters from my grandma to my grandpa while he was stationed in Oklahoma and she was still in Connecticut. There were tons of pictures, too! They were absolutely beautiful and heartfelt and told a story of the beginning of their 50 plus year marriage. Now, it was not perfect—she’d get so mad at him for spending so much time with his horses, but they stuck it out. They were committed and loyal to each other and that’s a powerful message of love and hope to their whole family. They left behind a legacy of love, commitment, hard work, and loyalty and I’m so glad to call them my family! Farm Fact Day 12! Throwback Thursday! Did you know... we weren’t always a plant and vegetable farm, in 1900, then known as Nielson Farm, it started as a small dairy farm, several years later, the farm underwent changes and began to specialize in raising broiler chickens to sell for both their eggs and meat. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the farm underwent more changes and became a plant and vegetable farm and has remained the same ever since! ———— #ctfarmstands #berlinct #ctfarmers #coldspringbrookfarm #familyfarm #25daysoffarmfacts #day12 #throwbackthursday #farmhistory #supportlocalfarms #localfarm #farmfact

Pictured here in Wisconsin is an all-female band, the Ingenues, serenading a group of dairy cow in 1930. They were participating in a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin, Madison testing the effects of music on cow's milk production. Various other studies have since been done to replicate and confirm the findings that slow music in fact increases the amount of milk produced per cow! Most interesting in the 2001 University of Leicester study preformed on the topic, it was found optimal songs had under 100 beats-per-minute and increased milk production by 3%. Specific cow favorites from this study included R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water." While less popular with the cows were hits like Supergrass' "Pumping on Your Stereo," The Beatles' "Back in the U.S.S.R.," and Jamiroquai's "Space Cowboy." at University of Wisconsin-Madison

Whether you love it or hate it there is no debate that candy corn means Halloween. Did you know that the tri-colored treat was designed to look like chicken feed? In the late 19th century over half of consumers worked in agriculture so therefore US candy companies responded by creating farm-themed treats. While oral history tells us that George Renninger was probably the sweet’s inventor it was the Goelitz Candy Company, which is now Jelly Belly, that popularized the product. They marketed it as “chicken feed”, since amongst US commercial farming community and their families, corn was not really considered food for humans until the wheat shortage of 1917. #weirdhistory #halloween #candy #candycorn #sugar #sweettreats #funfacts #strangebuttrue #foodhistory #foodporn #halloweencandy #trickortreat #myfavoriteholiday #halloween🎃 #halloweeneveryday #femalepodcasts #notoriousnarratives #creepygirls #strangeandunusual #stuffyoushouldknow #farmhistory #fall #cavities #history #historychannel #mysteriesatthemuseum #guiltypleasure #treatyoself #treat at New York, New York
