More photos I came across of my family. This is my great-grandma Hattie’s brother, Howard. I was lucky enough to have my great-grandma around until I was 19 but I never knew any of her siblings.

Where’s that confounded bridge?!

12

Found some old family photos on the internet when I was researching my great-great grandpa, Gurney Miller. Here he is with my great-great grandma Celia and three of their children. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ These were my great-grandma Hattie’s parents & siblings. Grace, the oldest pictured here was sent from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania to attend the Carlisle Indian School for a short period of time. The school was closed down in 1918. ⁣ ⁣⁣ Residential schools were created to assimilate Natives into the “American” way of life. They were given new names when they arrived if they weren’t anglicized enough and were forced to speak English instead of their tribal tongue. The motto of these schools was, “Kill the Indian. Save the Man.” It wasn’t until 1978 that Native parents were able to refuse to send their children to these schools. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This photo would’ve been taken in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. For those curious, we are Osage or WahZhaZhe.
