Student Spotlight: PARISA AMAR! "I started dancing at three years old and was immediately put into ballet. It was very strict and serious... I sprained ankles and had various other injuries. I had to train every night to get leaps and spins perfect. I didn’t feel any joy or any bonds with fellow dancers back then. I then stopped ballet at ten years old and only recently started dancing again because I kept seeing elegant dancers who looked like they were having fun. I wanted to embrace a dance and love it like they were. I practiced bellydancing by myself for about two years but I was not getting anywhere, so I looked for a studio near me. Although, starting bellydancing at a studio and not alone I came to some issues like that it was at first frowned upon by my relatives. Wearing anything that shows too much skin or wearing too much makeup was taken negatively. After participating in a class with my grandmother she helped my family wash away their negative connotations. It has taught me it’s okay to act as feminine as you want. It’s okay to smile and shake what you can. Bellydancing has since been a passion. It draws me in and brings me vast amounts of happiness I never felt in any other style of dance before." Parisa has just been promoted to the Raks al Hawa I (intermediate) class with Jahara. Student Spotlight: SAMIRAH AMAR! “I've grown up watching my mom and her friends dancing and I fell in love with it. I started dancing at 4. It helps build confidence. I guess I like the rhythm and movement of belly dancing, it's different from say ballet, and I like that it's different. It's funny to see people's reactions when I show them, and it's nice to teach people little things.” Samirah is in the Sequins (preteen) class. You can catch her performing at all of our local festivals and the Aalim Spring Showcase. She will be performing her very first solo at this year’s Starfest! at Aalim Bellydance Academy

Student Spotlight: NADIRA AMAR! “I heard about bellydancing when I was visiting my sister in Oregon and she invited me to come to her trible fusion class, and I enjoyed her class. When I came back home to Oklahoma I wanted to find out if there was a bellydance class near me. Why I come back is because it is a good stress reliever and good work out and a good dance sister bond and the teachers and the students are very supportive. The class is affordable. I love to dance; it feels natural.” Nadira is a trooper! She makes a 3 hour round trip drive for class each week! Nadira is in Zafirah’s Raks al Sirri (beginners) class. The OU Bellydance class did such a great job working on downs yesterday! I like to have students start on the floor to notice how the movement feels in the body. “What does it feel like to move my hip down? What do I notice happening in my sides? What happens to my legs and feet?” Dance (yoga, too!) is an awesome way to become more body aware by taking time to notice those different sensations in your body. Then it becomes easier throughout your day to notice how your body feels and to recognize when something doesn’t feel good or right, or when you need to take a rest or say no. It’s also important to recognize the things that do feel good and right, and to take time to be grateful for those things. 🤗@ou_dance at OU Dance

Health Tip Wednesday! We live in a society today that keeps us shelter from the Sun's rays on a consistent basis. Now, while long-term exposure to the Sun can lead to negative health problems, getting a daily dose of 20-30min is critical! Our body can manufacture the vitamin D we need for a variety of processes, but it needs the Sun's direct contact on our skin. It helps with bone health, energy, and cognitive function! So, do yourself some good and get outside for a bit! Go for a walk, sit outside and drink your coffee, get some friends together and grill out this evening, or whatever! Student Spotlight: NALANI AMAR! "I have always enjoyed watching dance of all forms and especially belly dance. I had never taken any formal classes but enjoyed reading and working out to belly dance videos. It wasn’t until my youngest daughter, who now attends Aalim with me, decided that she wanted to do something active, that I decided to pursue formal training in belly dance. We had looked into and tried ballroom dancing which she enjoyed, but she found herself wanting to look into something else. As frequent festival goers, I made sure to take her by the belly dancers at a festival that we were attending. She instantly fell in love and asked if we could try belly dance. We attended our first free class at Aalim a year and a half ago and she instantly fell in love. She saw women of all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds working together and performing. We feel that we have met and joined an amazing tribe of women who support each other, accept each other and encourage each other. We have both grown so much physically and emotionally from belly dance. We will forever be belly dancers and look forward to growing with Aalim and all of the phenomenal women who attend and teach." Nalani is in Zafirah's Raks al Sirris (beginners) class and can be seen performing at our local festivals, Starfest in October, and the Spring Showcase. Most foods these days have so many added ingredients to them that it is hard to really know the calories you are getting. From oils, creams, additives, and sauces, it can be very easy to consume an extra 300-500kcal in a meal without even knowing it! Energy balance will always be the main mediator to your weight goals and it is essential to consume lower calories if you want to lose weight or more if you want to gain. Your best bet is to make meals with as few ingredients as possible. Prepare your proteins with dry rubs, make the rice with water, eat raw veggies, and more. You will be amazed in the amount of calories you can save each day by limiting the "extra stuff"! There are plenty of recipes out there that use simple ingredients yet taste amazing! N.E.A.T (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) This long phrase refers to our daily movement outside of exercise. If you break your week down into the 168 hours that are within, most of us may only be getting 3-5 hours a week. That is only 2-3% of our time; a drop in the bucket of water. While exercise is invariably important, you will find that those who exercise more than average also MOVE more than your average person. They walk farther, take the stairs, have active hobbies, and more. They do not spend as much time in a sedentary position compared to those who have weight issues. So, take a look at your life and figure out how you could move more throughout the day!
