Earlier this week I had the pleasure of taking @gnemmie through a movement assessment as he embarks on his journey to qualify for the Boston Marathon. We were interested in looking at specific movement faults that would put him at a higher risk for injury. •• This test wasn’t necessarily specific to running, but does a good job of highlighting the importance of assessing the whole body. In this case, we’re looking at how the ankle is influencing his ability to squat. •• Video 1: Guy struggles to break 90 degrees. A lot of factors are influencing this, but his ankles are definitely playing a role in limiting his ability to squat to full depth. •• Video 2: We elevate his heels with weights to bias him into more ankle motion. This gives us an idea of what his squat would like like with more ankle mobility and control. As you can see, he demonstrates improved control, depth, and mechanics. •• Solution? A few drills to improve his ankle mobility and control. •• Solid work, Guy!

Goal: improving single leg hip control and stability while increasing tolerance and capacity to running. •• Re-test: single leg squat. •• Cue: “Single leg squat as far as you feel comfortable with.” •• Result: increased confidence, control, and belief with movement. •• The single leg squat was something that we tested during @fitbellausa ‘s first visit. Why? Because single leg stance plays a huge role in running, and you need to be able to control this position. •• Overall, extremely happy with the progress! •• Important to address that there are some subtle differences that could’ve changed her performance, such as having her shoes on. Her foot might’ve even tapped the floor in the 2nd video. Does it matter that much? Probably not. •• Keep up the hard work @fitbellausa •• #BuildTheBike #ICEtrained

Meet Joel! _____ As an instructor/trainer at HG, he gets so much fulfillment from simply being able to share his story. Getting to play a much more involved part in the running community, has been incredible for him. _____ As a college runner, he spent most of his career in the 3k steeplechase and 5k. He just made the full commitment to jump into the marathon in October 2017. He as run a 2:31 and completed the Boston Marathon! _____ But in just the last year and a half, he’s been able to learn and experience so much through other trainers and runners through HG. He loves being a trainer for the Fall Marathon program! #higherground2019 #fitnessokc #inspiration

A few notes from yesterday’s visit with @curtislofton50 •• 1. You don’t make it nearly a decade in the NFL without becoming really in tune with your body, figuring out what works and what doesn’t, and investing a lot of time and energy into taking care of yourself. •• 2. No doubt in my mind that the therapeutic effect of dry needling was enhanced by the dogs being under the table. •• 3. Great options for challenging and improving ankle function! — Give them a shot. They’re likely a lot harder than they look. If they’re easy, you can progress to standing on an unstable surface (e.g. towel, pillow, pad) like she’s doing in the 2nd clip. — Shoutout to Madi for getting and keeping people #moving in OKC 🙌🏻. — #BeAboutIt

Meet one of our instructors, Alex! _____ As a former D1 runner for Baylor University, she continues to love the sport and desires to encourage others into their gifts and talents! She believes we all have it in us, it’s up to HG to bring it out of you! _____ In High School she competed at Nike XC Nationals twice as the first Oklahoman to ever compete individually & ran at footlocker nationals her Senior year! She continued on to college and competed at a high level, finishing with a 5k PR of 16:34, 10k PR of 34:43, 6k PR of 21:45, 1/2 Marathon 1:24:34 ________ She loves working with us on our social media, blog and other pieces of HG that make us who we are! Charlie has been a fitness instructor at Higher Ground since May of 2017 and has been a cross country and track coach at Westmoore high school since 2015. _______ He has a bachelors degree in Kinesiology from UCO. Charlie has a passion for coaching the youth, watching them fall in love with the sport, and all the improvements that follow. _______ His running/life mantra is “you can be proud of yourself and want more out of yourself at the same time.” _______ He still trains at a high level and enjoys competing at various distances from the mile to half marathon. Here’s another sweet #mommyandmeMonday with my mini! It was his idea to race at the end 😂 It can be so hard to get a workout in with him around but making it fun & letting him join can make a huge difference. The other day I had a 1:1 and tailored the whole workout so a momma could hold her sweet infant the whole time.
