I’m excited to announce that today in the Freedom from Food Facebook group, I’ve just published the first ‘practitioner spotlight’ interview from one of the members of the group, Cindy Plowman from @conversationcaravan . In this interview, Cindy and I discuss the current impact that Covid-19 is having on our lives and mental health. Cindy shares with us the well known stages of grief model, and how she has used this framework to help her process some of the changes she has experienced. We also talk about food! Our relationship to food and our bodies, the things we’ve learned over the years and how to focus on body acceptance rather than the number on the scale. It’s a great conversation and I hope that you will check it out. Within the group we have people from all walks of life; therapists, dietitians and many other types of practitioners who work with disordered eating. We have people who have struggled or currently struggle with disordered eating. We have people who care for someone with an eating disorder. It still feels weird that we don’t have to schedule certain meals on certain days to make our schedule work! . So much about this feels weird, and wrong! . Do you go through phases with food? This is my latest. #peanutbutter on #sourdoughbread (and yes, with butter as well!). Honestly, a number of years ago I don’t think I would’ve let myself have this for breakfast. I didn’t even let myself keep #bread in the house. Why? No doubt it was some bullshit story about what I thought I ‘should’ eat instead, for all reasons #dietculture of course. These days I’m much more relaxed about allowing myself to have the things that I crave, when I crave them. Which means that this week it’s peanut butter toast but next week, maybe something else? Who knows, but I’m ok with that. Letting go of all the ‘should’s’ and the restrictive and fearful mindset around food has been liberating. I won’t say it’s always been easy, it can be difficult to reprogram beliefs which were at least three decades old by the time I started questioning them. It’s not because of weak will-power or because you’re not trying hard enough (so don’t get into that negative headspace). This is happening to you because of a deficiency in certain brain chemicals. SEVENTH PRINCIPAL OF INTUITIVE EATING Anyone else an emotional eater? 🙋🏻‍♀️ During my years struggling with anorexia and bulimia, I binged when I felt good and starved myself when I felt bad. Controlling my food intake was my preferred coping mechanism. One of the first concepts I learned while relearning how to be an Intuitive Eater was how to separate emotions from hunger. Indulging in play food to mark a occasion is healthy and normal. Food is part of many of our celebrations and an important part of culture. A glass of champagne is one of my favorite ways to celebrate! Using food to distract from your feelings or cover up an unpleasant emotion will only lead to guilt and shame. Guilt and shame tend to lead to overeating. Guilt and shame about our bodies and what we eat is traumatic! I know I should eat better but it’s too hard to eat healthy! Besides, my kids won’t eat that! . Yup, I used to say that too! . This meal took under 20 minutes to put on the table! And although Lauren made faces at the veggies and complained about how much we gave her, she ate it all! . All of these veggies were purchased frozen from Aldi! . Packaged foods aren’t all bad, you just have to know how to tell the difference! . Read the labels, if you can’t say or recognize the name of all of the ingredients, it’s probably not a good choice! . Plus when you eat healthy meals, there’s no guilt when you have a treat! Why is it so hard to make healthier choices? 😣👇⠀ .⠀ I used to ask myself why is it so hard to make healthier choices. ⠀ .⠀ Ever since I was a kid I knew eating healthy was good for me, but when I was a teenager I guess I forgot about doing that.⠀ .⠀ Because before I knew I put on 40lb at the age of 16 from eating a lot of junk.😭⠀ .⠀ And when I was 22, I decided it was time to get back to making healthier choices,😬 but I struggled with that. 😢⠀ .⠀ Then one day I told myself "Kelly, you can do this, but you need to go about it in a different way."⠀ .⠀ So I started thinking, why do I have a hard time eating healthier, and what can I do to make it work for me. Then it came to me that I need to not focus on the junk I eat, but start focusing on the healthy things I eat! And then I thought "I don't eat pizza because someone is making me, I eat it because I want to.🤔 So if I'm that way with my pizza, then I need to be the same way with EVERYTHING I eat."⠀ .⠀ After that I started only focusing on eating healthy, and only eating the healthy foods I like!⠀ .⠀ And still to this day, I have my food under control and love the relationship I have with food!⠀ .⠀ So if you are trying to eat healthier but find it really hard, ask yourself "am I eating things I don't really like?" ⠀ That could be why you are having a hard time with it.🤷🏼‍♀️⠀ .⠀ 💚💚💚

Being home 24/7 is definitely bring back some bad snacking habits for me! . Sometimes I give in and let myself have the treat but other times these are my strategies: . 1. Drink some water, it’s harder to snack when your stomach is full of water! . 2. Set a goal, I can have a snack when... I finish this email, orb this bottle of water or at a specific time. . 3. Think about how you’ll feel mentally and physically after you’ve had the snack! Will you be upset with yourself, will you feel crappy from putting crap in your body? Challenging, to different degrees and for different reasons. Frightening. Curious. Unique. Perhaps not like anything that many of us thought we would ever experience in our lifetime. ⁣ ⁣ With all of the changes that we’re undergoing on a global scale, we can make sense of why this is happening. We’ve seen the devastation that some countries have experienced and we know that if swift and efficient action is not taken, that we too could hold the same fate. ⁣ ⁣ Nonetheless, for many of us, our daily reality which has suddenly shrank to the walls of our homes, may seem far removed from the scenes we see projected to us through our screens. I don't know about you? But I'm EXCITED for Easter!🐰 Ok I'm really just excited about the Easter candy! 😋🍫🍬⠀ .⠀ Story time!📖⠀ I didn't always love Easter.😣 every time Easter rolled around I just gave up on losing weight. 😢⠀ .⠀ You see, this is how it would go. Thanksgiving would come, I would eat a lot, and feel FAT.⠀ Then it would be Christmas, and I would eat a lot😲 and I mean a LOT of Christmas candy.😖🍭⠀ .⠀ And on New Years Day I would tell myself "I'M GOING TO LOSE WEIGHT.🙆‍♀️"⠀ .⠀ I would start to do good, but by the time it was Easter I would eat SO MUCH candy,😖🍫🍬⠀ that I would end giving up.😧⠀ .⠀ And when Easter was over, I thought I was just going to be UGLY & FAT for the rest of my life.😭😭😭⠀ .⠀ But the problem wasn't Easter😯 it was my thinking.😮⠀ .⠀ By putting myself down, I was creating an unhealthy relationship with food. 😟⠀ .⠀ Before I could lose weight, and have a good relationship with food, I needed to learn how to love and value myself!❤ ⠀ .⠀ Long story short, after I learned how to do that it changed my life FOREVER!🤓⠀ .⠀ To this day I no longer feel guilty for eating Easter candy!😆🍫🍬⠀ .⠀ And now that my relationship with food is good I want to help you with yours. #middlegroundmonday When I was struggling with my #weight and #food, there were many times I would find myself in a fog. I would eat a cookie, then a bowl of chips, followed by another dessert, then another salty snack. Before I knew it, I had mindlessly eaten a whole bunch of food and I wasn’t even hungry! . . Does this ever happen for you? Why was it that some nights I could just stop at the first cookie and others seemed to be an endless fest of grazing? I now know it wasn’t because I was lacking self-control or #willpower. I never thought of myself as an emotional eater in the traditional sense but I now know that I would turn to food when I was feeling misunderstood, vulnerable or was depleted from accommodating others. . . If you find yourself in a food fog this week, bring some curiosity instead of judgment to the pattern and check in to see if something happened earlier in the day that could have contributed to turning to food for comfort or as an escape. This is how we ended week 3 of the #quarantine ! . I’ve been posting the things I’m grateful for in all of this but the reality is sometimes it sucks! . 😥My kids miss our family, and their friends and activities! . 🥺I miss my family, students and colleagues! . 😡I am frustrated: ~by people who still don’t get it and refuse #stayhome ~that I cannot help my students who are struggling with school and life as much as I could if we were at school! ~that today was supposed to be the beginning of my spring break and now we have to keep working! I understand that all of this is necessary and there are things to be grateful for like our #healthcareworkers but some days, I just want “normal” back! . I’ve been starting and quitting workout routines and “diets” for almost 30 years! . So, I know, it’s hard to believe I stuck with something for almost 3 years! Especially if you’ve known me for a while! But I am still doing these “crazy” at home workouts! . The thing is I can’t imagine surviving this quarantine without them! This is MY time for me, it’s the one time of day I can have for myself & it makes me a better mom, wife, teacher and person! I am happier & have more energy & patience when I take this time for me! . My family knows that and although there may be some arguing while I’m downstairs, they usually don’t interrupt unless they really need to! I never would have imagined that was possible 3 years ago! . And this isn't saying you have to count your calories, because ain't nobody got time for that.😕 But we know that food has calories, so we just need to not be willing to waste them on something we don't like.😐⠀ .⠀ So ONLY eat what you really, really, REALLY love!⠀ .⠀ And this includes fruits and vegetables too. The perfect storm for emotional eating is being cooped up in the house with extra food and feeling anxious. . When not hungry and want to eat pause, think about what you’re feeling. Get out and walk, call or FaceTime a friend while walking, change the scene to clear your head when you’re tempted to eat and not hungry. . Drink a bottle of water and see how you feel in 15 or so minutes. Columbus enjoy this beautiful weather while we have it! You know how that goes...😂☀️ . Stay safe & healthy!

Well that didn't work. 😐👇⠀ .⠀ Tried to take a cute picture in the sun today.☀️⠀ .⠀ But it didn't work.😧⠀ .⠀ Because sun kept getting in my eyes, and I couldn't bear thought of opening them long enough to take the picture. 😣⠀ .⠀ So I gave up.😖 ⠀ .⠀ But I didn't give up completely. I just moved to a different spot to take the pictures! 😏⠀ .⠀ And that worked a lot better! 🤓⠀ .⠀ And you know there's a lesson in all of this.⠀ .⠀ Sometimes we are trying to eat healthier, but something that we try doesn't work for us.😔⠀ .⠀ But instead of giving up.😦⠀ .⠀ Do what I did with the pictures. 🙂⠀ .⠀ Move to something different. 😊⠀ .⠀ For example, many of you say you were going to have a salad for lunch every day. But then learned you don't really like salads that much.🥗😝⠀ .⠀ Don't give up on eating healthy, just try something else for lunch! 🤔⠀ .⠀ Like maybe a sandwich on whole wheat bread 🍞🥒🧀🥓🥑🍞 and some fruit!🍎⠀ .⠀ When something doesn't work out the way you thought it would, it doesn't mean you have to give up, it just means you need to try something else! 🤓⠀ .⠀ 💚💚💚

I did not take leaving my house today lightly! . I did not sleep well and had nightmares of empty shelves and of bringing illness home to my kids! . I went to 4 stores because everyone is still out of disinfecting wipes! . I did not take my bags or my phone into the stores. . I wiped the cart, then cloroxed everything as I bagged it in the back of my car, then sanitized my hands and cloroxed everything I might have touched while bagging! . I respected the 6 foot rule whenever it was in my control (seriously people it’s not that hard, just pay attention to something other than yourself!). I even got to see them putting germ shields around the registers @aldiusa while I waited in line! . When I finally got home, I immediately put all my clothes in the washer and took another shower! . My hands are raw and I’m exhausted but we’re good for hopefully 2 more weeks! . Some may say I went overboard but I’m ok with overboard if it keeps my family safe! . #groceryshopping2020 #stayhealthy #covid19safety

OMG!!!!😲 IT'S SO BIG!🙄👇⠀ .⠀ Had some really big strawberries the other day!🍓🍓🍓⠀ .⠀ It's crazy how big fruit can get sometimes! ⠀ .⠀ But it's in those moments that eating healthy is interesting.🤔⠀ .⠀ If fruit, and vegetables always looked the same it would get so BORING..... to eat healthy.😧⠀ .⠀ It's the big pieces of fruit, and the funny looking vegetables that makes us laugh, and remind us to have fun with eating healthy.⠀ .⠀ Because eating healthy shouldn't be done "being so strict.😳" We don't have to eat healthy foods, and hate every minute.😣⠀ .⠀ We can eat healthy in a way where we love it, are enjoying it, and having fun with it!⠀ .⠀ So today STOP thinking in order to eat healthier a part of you has to die first.😱😵⠀ .⠀ Eating better doesn't really mean you are giving up a part of your life. For me, this past weekend of staying home was *exactly* what my soul needed. Lots of delectable meals. No agenda. Extra sleep. A hilarious family video chat. Shutting out most media. A ridiculous amount of television. Laughter. A feeling of safety and hope. - - No to do list. No projects. No guilt about lying on the couch. No qualms about what or how much I was or wasn't eating. I allowed myself to simply be. It was the most caring thing I've done for myself in a while. - - How are you caring for yourself right now?
