Positioning is extremely important in all big lifts, especially squatting. Being able to get your body in more optimal alignment with less muscular restrictions will create a more vertical bar path on your descent into the squat and your ascent out from the bottom. Not having any restrictions while getting into and out of the bottom of a squat generates a smooth and powerful movement. If you do not have the ability to get in and out of the bottom of a squat properly you will most likely be "grinding" the weight up. While once in a while this is not harmful (like setting a new PR every few months) but your body should not be grinding every repetition on every set. This grinding mentality can cause shearing forces on your joints, wearing them out and creating inefficient movement patterns. Which can lead to overuse injuries that leave you with nagging pain and possible injuries. Key players in restricting squat depth and proper positioning are the calves, adductors (inner thigh) and the thoracic spine (mid back). The first thing you need to do to improve your squat position is create more ankle dorsiflexion. You cannot perform a squat optimally without good ankle range of motion. You need to mobilize these tissues and stretch them. Then you need to mobilize and stretch the tissues of your inner thigh. If the inner thighs are too tight they will restrict your ability to sink into the bottom of a squat as well as restrict your ability to keep your knees out while descending and especially while ascending. Keeping the knees out while squatting allows for greater depth and reduces chances of knee injuries. After this you have to address your thoracic spine (mid back) you have to mobilize and strengthen this area. If you do not have good strength and mobility in your mid back then your lower back will compensate during the squat by extending or flexing more. When the low back is in a compromised position so are the hips. You cant have the function of your hips compromised because they are the driving force in the squat. After you have addressed these muscle groups you should spend time in the bottom of the squat working these new ranges of motion.

I decided to throw this variation in 1.) because Iโ€™m trying to improve my benchpress strength, and 2.) because during my last bench workout I finished with a set of band resisted reps which made the press harder near the top; so now I can focus on cleaner upper half reps with a heavy load.
