Taking it easy with a slow run in the morning. Hoping to start activating the quads and hams so I’ll have a better sense of whether I can start pivoting and cutting again, and hopefully take this knee a little further. #slowbutsteady #functionalprogression #everylittlebitcounts #onestepatatime #justdoit

We did #bulgariansplitsquats elevated yesterday in the front rack position and mannnn did they get toasty. I was starting to feel more fit since having Sloane 16 months ago, but not quite as strong as I wanted to be. I’m committed to carving out time for myself in these coming months for twice a week lifting sessions on top of my regular fitness regime. Why? Because for me- lifting heavy things and lifting them well is therapy. Emotional and physical therapy. There’s no feeling quite like it. To be a warrior woman, lifting, sweating and grinding. It feels primal, it feels right, it makes me feel like I’m serving my highest self. Along with that I’ve learned that balance is key over the years. I can’t be breaking down muscle tissue to build it back up without taking care of myself. Rest and digest. Stretching, breathing. I require yin to my yang. So along with the #functionalprogression for a strong core and pelvic floor, I’ve subscribed to #romwod to make sure I’m taking care of my body’s mobility and flexibility needs! #fitness #4pillars #momstrong #mombodlove #strongaf #takecareofyourself #4pillars #birthfit #yinandyang @birthfit_westpalmbeach_fl #motherhoodtransition #dontpeeyourpants #lunges #barbell

Continuation from yesterday’s post courtesy of @birthfitprofessional - :Clinical Insight: Diastasis Rectus Abdominus These photos are of the same woman, 38 weeks pregnant. Photo 1: abdominal crunch/mini sit up. This movement is typically recommended in aesthetic based training but if not aware is also frequently seen in day to day activities such as getting up from laying down, sitting back from reclining, etc. Photo 2: Functional Progression 2 This is one of our faves for oblique activation and reduced diastasis with major bonus ❗pelvic floor activation❗ Recommended in all @birthfit programming and with awareness can be used in rolling to the side to get up from laying and elbow or side support if necessary to stand from seated. Pulled out the mat at home today for the first time since George was born, threw on some mellow music, and did some breathing and functional movements. . And George joined me because he decided his swing was boring. . It was exactly what my mind and jaw needed. This isn't the sexiest pregnancy exercise out there, but I do love it. This movement is a variation of #functionalprogression 1. And it's great for helping minimize a diastasis (hello, anterior sling work). 100% of women may have a diastasis in the third trimester of pregnancy, but this exercise helps the body remember how you properly activate these muscles to better support postpartum healing...it's like riding a bike but for your core. -Lay on your back (if you are part of the 10-20% of women who get lightheaded or feel off when lying on your back, this exercise is not for you) -lift your opposite hip and opposite shoulder, push through your hip and shoulder (your knee and hand may be touching but they aren't the ones doing the work) -continue breathing and you should feel your core working nicely without any coning. At the end of pregnancy, remember to breath through the ribs, low back and sides, we don't want to hold our breath or push it down towards the pelvic floor. #birthfit #fitness #nutrition #mindset #connection #dynamicneuromuscularstabilization #dns #prenatalfitness #pregnancyexercise #39weeks #diastasis #movewell #moveoften

✨Table Top- hands and knees✨ is a fantastic position for labor. It is also the start and finish of #functionalprogression 3. And, it is an essential component of training #corestability when done appropriately!. # @birthfit_nc - A few notes about what @jemilulu is doing here: 1. Knees are below the hips rather than directly under the torso - keeping a slightly wider base will help her to stabilize her core while mobilizing her arms/legs. 2. Hands are firmly on the ground - all five knuckles are spread and have pressure on the floor, which gives her a stable hand, wrist, arm, and shoulder position. 3. Her chin is retracted (think double chin), giving her a beautifully elongated spine. # Going into crawling or FP3 or an exercise like bird dog? The simplest way to create task-specific intra-abdominal pressure here is to only move *the one thing*. Jemalia could just pick up her arm or her leg, but she’d miss out on the major components of using this position as a training tool. Instead, if she focuses on keeping the rest of her body stable, and only moves her right shoulder in order to take her right arm forward (or only her left hip to move her left leg backward - or combines those two together at the same time), then she’ll get a hell of a core workout! Give it a try and tag a friend who thinks #birddog looks easy. I recommend videoing yourself to see how much you’re moving. Remember that #slowisfast! 💚✨🥳 #birthfit #birthfitaf #movementislife #prenatal #postpartum #strongmom #unitedinlove #core 📷: @birthfit_nc

I was teaching some BIRTHFIT functional progressions to a mama in clinic this week and we were trouble shooting neck tension that was creeping in while she was loading her core and adding movement. (You know that feeling of neck strain when you are doing “core stuff”?). . This trick with a ball is a great way to remind your neck and should muscles to relax... give it a try! .... Playing around with some neck stability & @birthfit Functional Movement Progressions today... I’m loving what my body is capable of postpartum. . The management of chronic back pain can be a complicated condition, but it doesn’t have to be. The ACP’s recommendations for its management is nice and easy to follow. It’s stepwise and starts with the most conservative approach. Studies have also shown that the combo of mindfulness meditation and exercise has the most profound effect on back pain than either alone! So don’t go for the pain meds just yet! #exerciseismedicine #getactive #againstopioidabuse #backpain #chronicbackpain #functionalprogression

//The Diaphragmatic Breath// ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We started out our very first @birthfit Postpartum Series: Breath and Flow class last week discussing and practicing that beautiful 360 degree expansion of our abdominal wall and lower back to allow the diaphragm to descend and fill our internal organs with oxygen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is normal, anatomical breathing, but do most of us do it this way? Nope. Instead, we compensate and either chest breathe (incorrect and puts us in a constant stressed, “fight or flight” state) or we belly breathe (where we do not get that full expansion in our posterior chain.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The diaphragmatic breath is so vital for proper posture, proper core stability or how we maintain intra abdominal pressure, and for our overall health and well being. This is also how we connect to our inner and higher power and tap into our intuition. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is how we begin to heal in the postpartum period, and it is how babies start to heal their diastasis through movement after they are born. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you ever watched a baby breathe? It’s pretty cool. Check it out. You may just learn a thing or two from them. 💚 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #birthfit #birthfitmarquette #fitness #nutrition #mindset #connection #breath #foundation #breathandflow #postpartum #healing #movement #movementislife #slowisfast #rehab #dns #functionalprogression #corestability #developmentalkinesiology #development #babies #borntomove #healingthroughmovement #mother #motherhood

"Slow is fast" in the Motherhood Transition. Meaning, slowing down movements engages your body and mind in a way that help you recover faster. Rushing through a workout isn't necessarily a recipe for success. ・・・ This is one of my favorite movements - transitioning from Functional Progression 1 to 2. To add a little challenge I sometimes roll from side to side and stop at various points. The roll helps to strengthen the core when the shoulders and hips are moving at the same time. It also activates the oblique chains (to help create a natural pull on the rectus and transverse muscles to help diastasis closure). I also love this move because I use it everyday in life. Rolling in bed? It's the same move. This move may help with core and pelvic floor dysfunction during pregnancy and postpartum ! And yes, this is harder than it looks so remember to continue breathing. *I learned this awesome move from Robert Lardner, PT at @dnsrehabilitation with @midwest_rehab #birthfit #fitness #nutrition #mindset #connection #dns #dynamicneuromuscularstabilization #functionalprogression #movewithintention

The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle. It’s when the moon is at its darkest. The energy of the new moon calls us inward. It’s the most powerful time to set intentions. It’s also the most Feminine time of the month. Did you know that your cycle can synchronize with that of the phases of the moon? Pretty incredible ✨ #newmoon #thepushygoat🐐 #functionalprogression #bellybreathing #setintentions #practicewhatyoupreach #birthfit #birthfitwichita #drsara

Sharing the step by step’s of a basic core stability 💪position from @birthfit_nc and @birthfit ・・・ Table Top- hands and knees- is a fantastic position for labor. 💚✨🥳 #birthfit #birthfitaf #birthfitgrandforks #movementislife #prenatal #postpartum #strongmom #unitedinlove #core 📷: @birthfit_nc

Attention all mamas!! How you move all day long matters and absolutely effects your neck/back/hips/etc... You don’t have to go to the gym or do “core exercises” everyday to be strong. I love teaching my moms how to adapt their current movement patterns to help their bodies. I teach this exercise to all of my patients! It is so important to learn how to bend and squat while maintaining a neutral spine and neck. This is critical if you want to have a healthy neck and back!

I recently found a new passion thanks to my amazing roommate, thrift shop shopping! I have been in desperate need of some new clothes and found this super cute and highly versatile dress at goodwill for $8! I have always known about thrift shops (obviously) and have known people who find great deals there, but to be honest I didn’t have the patience to sort through all the clothes.... but something I have been trying to work on myself is slowing down. What are some intentions you have for yourself?

⚡️BIRTHFIT Functional Progression 1 ⚡️ This movement is similar to a dead bug, but the s.e.t. u.p. and e.x.e.c.u.t.i.o.n. are what differ and make this an amazing tool for core stabilization. We always start with our breath, a neutral spine, and neutral joint position. It is done slowly and with intention. FP1 calls on all of the core muscles to work together, making it ideal for warm up, cool down, and rehabilitation. . . To get hands on instruction and begin your postpartum recovery, join me for our next Breath & Flow Series that begins a week from today at @rootschiropractic 💚 . . #birthfit #birthfitsouthpgh #postpartum #postpartumrecovery #pittsburgh #pittsburghmom #pittsburghbaby #functionalprogression #dns #dynamicneuromuscularstabilization #core #corehealth

I had so much fun talking with many amazing mamas today at @momsclubbend! We went over lots of really important movements that I teach all of my patients and how to specifically apply it to mom life. You don’t have to live with the common mama aches and pains. Your daily postures really matter! I enjoy teaching moms (and of course anyone) how to modify their movement patterns to help restore their bodies and to help get rid of all their common mama aches and pains.

Many of us moms laugh about the little "oh I peed myself " we tell ourselves it's normal. Well it's not, and you can help it. That's part of what Birthfit is all about. We are not trying to just get you back to that prebaby bod 👙 We are teaching you functional movement to heal your body 🧘‍♂️. Birthfits motto is "slow is fast " 🐢🐇 if you are pregnant you are about to compete in the most challenging event of your life, or if your post partum you have just completed the biggest marathon of your life. You created a human life and then brought this being into the world. There is nothing harder then that. Our bodies need time to heal, we need to reconnect. Distastis Rectus Abdominis (DRA) is getting a lot of attention in the pre/post natal mama world. Diastasis Rectus is the splitting of the linea alba (the connective tissue in between your rectus abdominis/6 pack ab muscles). This splitting can be relatively small or large. Although the splitting of those muscles is not painful it is something you absolutely want to address! It can cause low back pain, pelvic floor pain and other pelvic floor issues. Here are ways to help for prevention: avoid doing crunches/sit ups, maintain good posture, breath properly and keep your hip and shoulder muscles flexible (because everything is connected). If you already have DRA: avoid any exercises that causes coning, learn how to properly breath and how to create intra abdominal pressure, stop sucking in your stomach, make sure you see someone who is trained in dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) and BirthFit to help heal your core. Side note- did you know that you don’t have to have been pregnant to have DRA? You don’t even need to be a female to have DRA! I recently saw a 57 year old male that has a significant DRA, he had no idea!! Now he knows why he has been having chronic low back pain for the last 15 years.

I am very grateful to have been able to go to the @birthfit seminar over the weekend. I learned so much and met so many amazing and passionate providers that are contributing to improve the birthing world. This picture is of us learning functional progression 1. There are 4 main progressions and each one works on strengthening our core in functional restorative ways and helps to reconnected to your breath. Over the years, as we age, our bodies change and so do our movement patterns. For many different reasons they start veering away from the natural movement patterns we learned as a baby. Luckily we can work on these movements and begin to heal our bodies and correct our imbalances. These can be done at any age and any gender but can be particularly important for pre and post natal mamas. Movement is and will always be a big part of my practice and I am so excited for the new information I have learned and I am really excited to implement this with all my mamas. If you don’t live in Bend, I encourage you to go onto the BirthFit website and check out an online program or see if there is a local coach near you!
