More beginner demos as requested: how to perform a squat and how to do a basic deck squat. Good for firming your legs and butt. Make sure your heels are glued to the floor. By lifting them, you put too much pressure on your knees and could end up with an injury. Work with your ROM (Range of motion). Not everyone has enough #hipflexibility to go all the way down and get back up. But if you practise enough, you CAN get there. . For the deck squats, play around with the hand positioning. Soon you'll find you don't need to use your hands. If you can do an air squat (a squat with full ROM), the deck squats will be easier. You need an adequate amount of hip flexibility to be able to perform the squats in a controlled manner and not just fling your butt on the ground mindlessly. If you find it difficult to get back up, you can always use your hands to support yourself on the way back up. These simple leg lifts will help alleviate your knee pain if you do them consistently. If you find that you can't lift your leg too high while it's straight, or if your quads (top of your thighs) hurt, or if you have to rock/swing your body, it means you need them the most. This is my Thursday throwback. I had sore muscles on the day I recorded this (legs were on fire). Now I remember why I didn't post it, because I tripped and nearly bust my arse. Joke is on me again. Beginner pushups. My back is straight, my core is tight (belly button pulled in). My breathing is slow and controlled and I bend at the elbow to lower my body then push back up. My head is not hanging (neck is neutral). Play around with what feels comfortable for you. No need to go all the way to the floor with your chest. With time, you'll get stronger and will be able to go lower (increase your ROM). Some of my clients have started out with this simple technique and can now do 8,10, 12 push ups. All you need is a few minutes, 3-4 times per week, going at your own pace. Try to do 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions per round. Can't do 8? Well do 1 or 2 or as many as you can. After 1 week you will be doing more. I've been asked before if I ever do fasted workouts and the answer is yes. I decided to do a 24 hour fast today. This is me after a full day's work and nothing but a cup of black coffee this morning and water throughout the whole day. No dizzy spells, no headache and no awful hunger pangs. I did upper body push/pull exercises and of course abs (including my new favourite, hanging leg raises) at the end. This 10kg (22lbs) plate felt light. But the 15kgs were too far and would probably be too heavy. Lol. . Do you know about the benefits of fasting? One of them is that it reduces inflammation in your body. And my back pain is usually reduced almost completely. I feel so much better on the days that I do. Message me if you'd like to know more about water fasting or intermittent fasting. 🇬🇧It's been a while since I've posted a GinaFit food tip so here goes... 🇪🇦 Español más abajo. Fancy something crunchy and salty? Ditch the potato chips/crisps. Wash some broccoli, sprinkle with salt to taste (I use pink salt), bang in the microwave, cover and cook for 4-5 minutes et voilà ! Go get your life - I kid you not. I add a bit of coconut oil to mine because I absolutely love the taste of coconut in EVERYTHING. You can add olive oil if you wish, or just let it cook/steam juste comme ça. Sorry I spoke Franglish just now. Lol. . 🇪🇦 Si te apetece algo salado y crujiente, olvídate de las patatas fritas. No tienes que hacer nada más que meter un poco de brócoli en el microondas con una pizca de sal a tu gusto. En 4-5 minutos ya tienes tu snack(tentempié). If at first you don't succeed, pick yourself up and try again. As promised yesterday, here are the video clips from last November 30th when I first decided to start training for the pistol squat (see my video from yesterday of my current progress). I wanted to see where I was with it before I started working on it, (without the use of the TRX). As you can see, my right leg was far weaker and I had to cheat by lifting by heel off the floor. As for the left side, I got down okay but couldn't get my heavy backside back up. I worked on certain progressions, using a bench, then lowered to a step box, then I used a weighted disc under my heel, then voilà. Success doesn't come overnight. . Can you do a PS? My friend/client, Samantha, decided to show up and flex today. This was during our WhatsApp session this afternoon, during her break at work. She shows up Every Single Day, even when she doesn't want to, and we make it work. Let's forget her continuous weight loss progress /journey for a moment, and focus on her Friday flex. You don't know how big a deal this is for Sam. Basically, she was surprised that she was able to do this pose. As for me, I was simply elated. So we decided to capture the moment. Rock on, Sam. You know I'm your biggest fan. Long post ahead but I'm going to be very transparent with you, because that's how I am, so bear with me. Sometimes we see some fitness videos online and think, "shit I'll never be able to do that!" The reason being, not many people show the behind the scenes videos, when they're busting their asses trying to "perfect" a pose or a move. But we need to remember that no one wakes up being awesome at everything - it takes hard work, showing up day in, day out. Falling over many times but getting right back up. You too can be and do whatever you'd like. You just need to set a goal with a realistic date and plan of action, then get going. . One of the goals that I didn't achieve last year was being able to get a proper unassisted pistol squat with full range of motion. I first started working on it on November 30th, then 2 weeks later I went on holiday for a month and didn't work out much during that time (that's what half-assed goal setting looks like). So, I restarted two weeks ago and for the first time today, I was able to get my ass up off the floor without toppling over. My point is that we have to set clear goals and a plan of action. Now I'm putting it out there so I can be accountable to you guys, who I know are in my corner. I plan to work on all the shaky, wobbly bits and be able to have a decent pistol squat by the end of February. Would you like to do it with me? I'm happy to provide tips and vids of how to progress with this extremely challenging exercise. It makes me happy when I get food pictures from clients, especially on a weekend. It means they're making conscious decisions about what THEY choose to eat. It means that they're working hard and making efforts to reach their goals even when they're not due to see me (I'm not around). It makes me happy to try and take a glimpse into the future and imagine how great they'll feel once they achieve the individual goals they THEY set for themselves. As personal trainers and/or nutritional guidance coaches, there's only so much we can do. But ultimately, it's all down to the individual and how badly they want change. The change is right there within you, ladies/gentlemen. Reach down deep and grab it, if it's what you really, really want. There's no one size fits all. But with persistence and consistency, and a perhaps a few tweaks here and there, you'll eventually find what works for YOU and therefore be able to stick with it. Here's one of the many exercises that I'm not very good at (I'm obviously not an IG model so am not afraid to show you the gritty details) I had just started training them again recently (after years of neglect) and it shows. For one, there's too much swinging momentum going on, which means that I need to strengthen my hip flexors - I need to be engaging my core muscles more in order to get those legs up even higher and not rely on so much momentum. Work it Wednesday. Shout out to my in-person client, Cherise, who has 2 kids under 2 but still MAKES time to work out with me 4 days per week. After having taken a break over the Christmas period, she came back with a vengeance and held a full plank for 2 frikkin minutes. Badass or what? Cherise is one of those ladies who thinks that you should go hard, 100% on each and every session. I'm still trying to educate her that it's okay (and good for your body!) to lower the intensity and/or volume of your exercises sometimes, in order to avoid burnout or even possible injury. Not sure she'll listen. She wants me to go hard at every session, which she sometimes hates me for, but then loves me again once it's over. Client's victory post: I'm so proud of my friend and online client, @sams_gram_s who, despite not being a huge fan of working out, keeps doing the damn thing week after week without excuses. This video was recorded 3 months ago actually. And now Sam can do 5 full push ups (watch out for video proof soon). When we started, she didn't have this ROM (she couldn't go so low) so we worked on various progressions/modifications and now she's kicking ass. . Sam is one of my most challenging clients because she's very hard to please and I have to dig deep to motivate her and she'll tell me outright that she's hating every minute of it (lol). I don't know how well I'm doing in that regard, but one thing is for certain - we're still getting results! And that's the biggest motivation anyone could ever have. Sam has lost another 6 kilos (13lbs) since her last shout out at the end of October, which brings her down to a total of 21kilos (46.2 lbs) lost since her heaviest weight. Watch out for comparison pics this coming week. . Here's a push up tip to finish off: make sure that you don't drop your head too low on the descent and be sure to keep your spine neutral (that's 2 actually. Lol) . By the way, I train Sam online and this was a 7am session right before she started work, because she knew that was the only time she'd get to fit it in. Long, personal post ahead. One of my goals last year was to take my basic French up to intermediate level. One of the actionable steps was to finish the skills tree on my Duolingo (language learning) app - all 78 of them, which I first started 3 years ago and thought it was IMPOSSIBLE to ever finish it. Well, I DID finish it before December 2018 (see my 209 day streak) and I'm proud to say that I can now comfortably have day to day conversations in French, whereas when I restarted in June I couldn't even introduce myself properly. It helps if you have a knack for learning languages but it helps more if you work your ass off to achieve whatever it is that you set out to do and stop at nothing. Sometimes I don't do well at finishing what I start and I had tried and "failed" many times before. And that's okay, right? As long as you don't lose hope. .. I actually didn't start working on this goal until the latter part of June last year when I realised how quickly the first 6 months flew by. So, I found myself some native French speakers who wanted to improve either their English or Spanish and I helped them with that, in exchange for French. I made the time, I'm still making the time. I have French conversations at least twice a week, I listen to French songs and podcasts while on my way to my clients, I watch French series on Netflix and I send text messages in French. I could write all this in French but it would take too long and it would have loads of mistakes. Lol. Hey, I still have a long way to go. Once I sit and pass the official intermediate exam, I'll set a new, improved goal. .. Name one, non-fitness related goal that you have for this year. "Gina, why can't I lose any weight even though I'm eating healthy?" I get asked this question ALL the time. And the simple answer is this, all things being equal, you need to be eating at a slight calorific deficit per day if you want to lose weight. Eat healthy and feel great. But if you're eating more calories than your body needs, you could eat healthy till the cows come home, but your weight won't budge. Tracking your calories and or macronutrients is one of the most accurate ways to ensure you're not overeating. Equally, if you lower your calories too far, you still won't lose weight. Penny for my thoughts? A friend gave me her permission to share her story. It's sad but has a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, it's one of the reasons why most of my clients will never set foot in a gym, due to this fear of being mocked/bullied. . "I was at the gym this morning and a group of two women and a man were very obviously laughing at/talking about another woman who was clearly new and nervous about being there. I didn't realize that this was happening at first because I had my headphones in, but then I saw one of the women pull out her phone to take a video. The woman they were making fun of knew it was happening and was almost in tears... she got off the treadmill and went back towards the locker room. I put my weights back and followed her, told her to wait right there, and reported the group to the manager. When I went back to the locker room, the woman was crying and she quietly told me that she didn't know what she was doing but was trying to learn. She explained that she had recently lost her parent to a weight-related heart attack, and the doctors said that she was headed down the same path if she wasn't careful. I told her that we all start somewhere, and after talking for a bit, I told her that her somewhere starts today and helped her up. I asked her to finish working out with me and that I would help her learn what I know, because I was in her place a year ago. For the remainder of the workout... she had a smile on her face. In the end...three members got permanently banned today, and I made a new friend. . I know we all get frustrated when the gym is busier at the beginning of the year, but it's hard to really understand how much of an impact we can have on other people's journeys. I have no doubt in my mind that this woman would not have returned to the gym if her only experience had been being made fun of. Please, PLEASE help others feel welcome... you don't even have to talk to them. Just give them a smile or a nod. Vegan and gluten free lunch today, for no reason other than the fact that I walked past this cute little place and it called my attention. Everything is home-made and fresh. 🇬🇧Tight hips? Me too. But I work on them almost every day. Having tight hips restrict our day to day movements (our ability to squat properly, getting down/ up off the floor, etc) and sometimes cause back pain or aches in other parts of the body. . Today I got my gym buddy to film me doing one of my more flawed /not so gracious hip rotations (pls excuse the chewing gum. Lol) and for the first time I was able to get up on both sides without touching the floor with my hands. One side was always significantly tighter than the other. It sure felt good achieving something that I hadn't been able to do before, especially since I didn't expect it. What are some things you'd like to do that you've never done, fitness wise? Client Spotlight: this is my friend and online client, Sam. She's been on her WL journey with me since May and is now 15 kilos lighter than at her heaviest weight. She's finally seeing numbers on the scale that she's never seen before. This is her "during" photo because her journey continues. I might just save the before photo until she hits her final goal and then Boom! In yah face! Lol. Seriously though, I just can't put into words how happy I am for Sam and how far she's come. The road has not been easy at all and we've had to try different tactics along the way, because you'll be aware that what works for one might not work for the other. Progress was initially slow - Sam had to dig really deep and there have been many times when she's been close to throwing in the towel, but she dug deep and found a way to push through. I think it's safe to say she still doesn't LOVE working out but she does it 4 times a week, religiously, in the comfort of her own home and that speaks volumes. Sam has never really "exercised" before starting with me and can now hold a full plank for 35 seconds, her body weight squats are on point and her overall strength, mobility and flexibility have improved significantly. I'm confident that by the time she reaches her goal weight, she will have developed some long lasting, healthy eating habits and will have grown to love exercise - I am SURE of it! We're in this for the long haul (she has a while yet to get to where she wants to be) but I'm enjoying every step of the journey with her. Rock on, Sam! 🇬🇧My own family remains my biggest critic. Have a look at my recent post of me doing the front splits. She said no one will be motivated by such minute difference in the space of 4 years. She said, better you had said 2016. But one thing I'm not gonna do is lie. We have to be realistic about what is achievable in any given time frame. And let me get this straight - I had stopped doing them ages ago and only just recently started adding them back to my stretch routine. That's why I harp on about consistency. If I had remained consistent, it wouldn't hurt so much to do them now. And if you agree with my daughter, we can't be friends. Lol. 🇬🇧 Sunday stretch. Y'all should know by now that I love to stretch. It's such a fundamental part of our exercise regime that is so often neglected by many. This first pic is a 4 year comparison (I went in cold). I hadn't been paying attention to my front splits, otherwise it would have been better. But, I'm still pleased that I've made some progress. Stretch it out Tuesday: Having difficulty touching your toes? It is most likely due to tight hamstrings. Here's a great dynamic stretch to help you get there. Start by doing pulses (12-15), then hold your shins, calves, ankles, or wherever you can comfortably reach. I sped things up to keep the video short. Hold the stretch for about 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times. You should feel a gentle pull on your hamstrings (back of your legs) but not pain. If it hurts, ease off a little. Don't worry if you can't go all the way - work with your range of motion. You'd be surprised at how quickly your flexibility increases just by doing these 4-5times a week. You know the cliché: consistency is key. Thankful Tuesday and in dedication to breast cancer awareness month: July 2010 on a beach in Turkey, just one month after I started treatment for triple negative breast cancer - apparently one of the most aggressive type there is. It had even spread to my lymph nodes. But look at that big smile though! It was genuine. I was on a girly trip with my friends and I was grateful to be alive and buzzing (no damn cancer was gonna stop me from living my life to the fullest). That bandana on my head was because I was completely bald and even though I actually loved my look, I didn't want to draw too much attention to myself. You know how much some people love to stare! Do you think I carried on with my exercise routine? You're damn right I did! Except those first 3 days after chemo where my bones and joints ached so badly from that dreaded poison. Anyway, that plus alternative treatment and a positive attitude meant that I had a full recovery just 5 months after diagnosis (which was coincidentally also in the month of October), which surprised the whole medical team. Savour every moment. I started doing that and then half way through I decided to share my breakfast with you guys. It's a chocolate and strawberry smoothie with lots of other goodies in it like hemp protein, pineapple, mango, melon, oats, etc. It's high protein but also high calories. Just because a smoothie is healthy, that doesn't mean it's low in calories. So be mindful of this fact if you're trying to cut back on cals. As for me, I personally hate calorie counting and avoid it like the plague. Do what works for you! Many ways to skin a cat! Hope the vegan police patrol doesn't get me for using this expression. Not really a throwback. Just this afternoon when I went to my hairdresser for a nice wash and blow out and was feeling kinda cute. This is what my failed attempt at a pout looks like. I'm a bit of a tomboy so stuff like pouting, putting on make up, looking pretty and all that jazz is just too much effort and I really admire those ladies who are so talented at it. But neat hair and make up are not conducive to my lifestyle. So this will last a total of 24 - 48 hours before it curls up again in an afro ball once it gets wet. 😂 . Monday Motivation and yoga: Hey guys, I know it's been a while. I've been nursing my bad back and haven't trained properly in a few weeks. Unfortunately, all the physiotherapy and osteopaths in the world will not un-do my herniated disc. On a scale of 1-10, the pain was 7 today. But after I finished my working day, I rubbed some gel on it and decided to work out, even though I didn't feel like it. . After my quick session, I incorporated some stretches and yoga poses. This one is called The Kurmasana (turtle pose). It relaxes your neck, head and shoulders, releases tight knots in the lumbar area and lengthens your spine, among other benefits. . I'm aware that this doesn't look so elegant. But progress, not perfection is all I'm after. It had been a ages since I last tried this pose and I was even surprised I was able to get into it. It was a bit painful to get into but I felt so much better afterwards. . If you'd like any help on how to work up to this pose, please let me know (there are modifications).
