Climbing is all about the teeny tiny bits of progress we make. You can’t climb without failing. .
I had a work away day this week which was all about the Growth Mindset, developed by Carol Dweck. She says people can have a fixed mindset, associating success and failure with fixed abilities - e.g. “I can’t solve that maths equation because I can’t do maths”, or “I’m not good at maths” or “I’m not clever enough for that”.
A growth mindset on the other hand would say “I might not be able to do this yet, but I’ll try it anyway” and they will look forward to the challenge and the feeling of success once they’ve accomplished the task 🎉👏👍
Although this was all in a work context, all I could think about was climbing. You can try a problem, fail and say “nope, I just can’t do that”, but you still go back and try again. Every single iota of progress fills you with an extreme sense of accomplishment and the rewards of persistence are so extremely visible. .
There are so many routes I’ve looked at and thought I wouldn’t even get my feet off the ground, but I kept at it - sometimes trying the middle, or the end, just to see what would happen, and over time I’ve been able to do the majority, or all of the climb.
I’ve enhanced my growth mindset because of climbing and try to replicate it in other areas of my life. I have so much to thank climbing for!! ❤️🧡💚💜💙

What should you be eating for energy during exercise?
Did you know a protein bar might not be your best choice if you’re looking for some quick energy? This is because protein is for recovery and carbs are for energy. And fat doesn’t really play a role here because it delays gastric emptying, and therefore how quickly you get energy.
[BUT...this DOES NOT mean that fats don’t have a place in an athlete’s life (recreational or otherwise). They are 100% essential but for other reasons.]
Your pre-workout or mid-workout macros should be mostly carb, and then moderate in protein and lower in fat (though some vegan options might mean your protein/fat macros are a little different - this is fine as long as carb is high).
Ensuring you have adequate carb means your body won’t have to turn to your hard-earned muscle for energy.
Some energy sources are...
➪ Bananas (especially if they’re ripe)
➪ Mashed potatoes (yes, really)
➪ Baked sweet potatoes
➪ Dates with nut butter
➪ 1/2 protein bar + fruit
➪ Mama Chia squeeze packs
➪ Salted rice cakes + hummus
➪ Overnight oats
These aren’t perfect macros, but your macros will never be perfect unless you sacrifice flexibility (and maybe sanity). They *are* mostly carb and that’s key. And maybe most importantly, whatever you choose should be tolerable. You may find that what sounds good to you at home repulses you when exercising 🤷♀️
If you’re at the gym for more than 2 hours, bring a snack. This counts! Happy snacking! 🍴

In this episode we talk about some of the physiological changes that can happen with overtraining, and what you should be monitoring for.
1) Mood changes - one of the earliest signs of overtraining is mood changes. It may be different for everyone but it is also one of the easier signs to recognize in ourselves. Some of the more noticeable changes will be becoming more irritable, depressed, angry, or annoyed.
2) Persistent fatigue - while it is OK to be fatigued at the end of training, climbing, etc. If you are waking up and heading to your training and not feeling fresh, feeling fatigued, and feeling like you are too tired to train, well.... you probably are! Remember, the point of training is to be able to push yourself (body, heart, and mind) to reach new levels. If you are going into the training sub-optimal, you are not likely able to achieve those levels. It may be time for a rest day so that you can go back in stronger the next day.
3) Chronic pain / muscle soreness - in this case we are talking of chronic pain / muscle soreness as pain that doesn't go away after a normal period of recovery whereas normal chronic back is pain that lasts more than 4-6 weeks. This overtraining mistake relates back to the persistent fatigue. If you are not allowing your tissue to heal, then it is not going to be functioning optimally. If it is not functioning optimally, then you can't expect to push your training harder. If you can't push your training harder, what do you expect to get out of it? Manage your pain. If you are feeling sore for longer, rest, or do some active recovery with stretching or other good mobility based movements.
