Until recently, I couldn’t even brush my hair or turn on the shower post wrist surgery. Pan Ams was something I visualized and worked for every single day. I’m so grateful to walk away with two medals (even if they aren’t gold) and honest satisfaction in my performance. I’ve recently been contemplating the idea of climbing as a craft vs. climbing as a “numbers” game. In light of climbing going mainstream and into the Olympics, among other things, the sport is naturally becoming more competitive at the highest levels which has a powerful influence on the community at large. This is not a bad thing but I think it’s important to be aware of how these changes influence the scope of our individual perspectives. Personally I got caught up in the numbers game rat race for a minute and it threw me for a loop since I had previously always climbed for the sake of climbing alone. I think the idea of climbing as a craft, where pursuit of multi-dimensional mastery guides our sense of achievement, is at the heart of climbing history and tradition and worth considering when we think about why we climb🐚 Given this consideration my indefinite goal is just to climb as many different types and styles of boulders as possible and I’m stoked🤘 #perspective #climbingascraft #artistryofsport @kinetikclimbing @frictionlabs @gnarlynutrition @cocoridgewater Photo: @jonvickersclimbs

Jiu-jitsu is all about mind-reading. You have to understand what the opponent is thinking and what they want to do. If you can read them, you can beat them. You have to cut them off and deflect them before they grab what they want. This is what makes jiu-jitsu so difficult. To be able to read someone, you need lots of experience. You cannot read a situation if you haven’t been in it hundreds or thousands of times. You need to know all the ins and outs and all the possibilities of that situation. AND you need to be able to do this by FEELING the opponent. The thing about jiu-jitsu is that you can’t see it with your eyes (unless you’re a spectator). But in the match, you have to feel it. You have to literally feel the weight, pressure, direction, and intensity of the opponent. You have to feel what they want and where they are going. Every grip they make, every step they take, every shift of their weight has a story to tell. Every movement they make tells you something. You have to read their mind by feeling their intentions. This is like Jiu-Jitsu intuition. Sometimes you find yourself in a foreign situation during a match and hopefully with enough experience you know if that situation feels right or not. Even having never been there before, you can feel whether you’re in control or not. I always tell the white belts that if you don’t recognize the submission until it’s already locked in, you’ll never escape. You need to feel the submission coming in advance and avoid it before it’s a real threat. Like cancer... the earlier you recognize it, the easier it is to beat. This is why we always say that the only way to improve is to train... and train a lot. Win, lose, learn, repeat. Experience all the positions, all the potential scrambles, and all their possible outcomes. This is how you develop jiu-jitsu intuition. This is how you learn to read your opponent’s mind. I was psyched to spend a week climbing with new and old friends in Roy, NM. It had been a year since returning to that magical place. I had fun running moderates ticking: puddle jumper, fun bags, squeeze my nuts, pump full of roy, and jewbacca. Got close on Destroy the castle and Ergonomicon. I used to hate public speaking. In high school I was terrified of it. In college I just refused to do it. Someone once told me that I should consider that I might have to speak in front of groups for my future career. I literally laughed at them and said, nah, not a chance. • 10 years later, I’m out here chasing opportunities to talk about jiu-jitsu in front of as many people as possible. All I do now is speak and perform in front of large groups of people. The point is, you can NEVER expand your comfort zone if you never leave your comfort zone. If there is something out there that terrifies you, then then you need to do it as much as you can. Chase it down and own it. Do it until it becomes fun. Become comfortable with being uncomfortable. That is how you find personal growth. • I broke away from my fear when I was asked to give a guest lecture at a university about my time in Turkmenistan. I agreed to do it because I was tired of being a scared little B. I realized that I was an expert among experts on the topic of Turkmenistan. I lived there in a village from 2006-2008. So literally no one could argue with me. For me, that was the key to public speaking. I’m noticing a trend lately with women new to Jiu Jitsu. They are afraid to be heavy. They are afraid to be too rough. They are afraid to take up space. They are afraid to ask questions or draw attention to themselves. Maybe “afraid” isn’t the right word, it’s more that they are hesitant and unsure of doing any of the above mentioned things. It is definitely NOT that they aren’t capable of all those things, they are just struggling to break some habits that are drilled into us as women from a very young age. I relate. I did the very same. Jiu Jitsu is about breaking all of those stereotypes. It’s about expanding ourselves and blooming. I want to help these women see the sheer beauty of physical pressure... on someone’s throat, on their diaphragm, on their hips. I want us all to forget about the times we heard or saw that being feminine is equal to being “light”. That the number on the scale should dictate our self worth. One of the best compliments I hear is how I feel like I’m 200 pounds. I want them to see that being rough can be fun, even therapeutic. What better, safer way is there to let our frustrations out than on the mat? We need to stop apologizing for giving our best efforts, stop apologizing for trying to find our limits. Grab someone’s damn lapel or chin and shake, pull, shove, do whatever it takes to get them to react and respect your attacks. The beautiful thing about women in Jiu Jitsu is.... 9x out of 10 you will love, hug and hangout with each other after simulating murder. Respect is respect and as long as you give it, you will receive it from most women on the mat. I’ve got lots of love and gratitude for the white belts that are making the plunge. You’ve got this. No doubt it’s been a rough month and a half of struggling health for me, but I’ve been dealing with these ups and downs for 3 years now. The feeling of accomplishment is like a drug. When you get a small taste of it, you want more. And the more you get, the more you need it. The other day I heard @drphil and @joerogan talking about how confidence and self-worth are developed by observing ourselves accomplish difficult tasks. It’s a way of proving to ourselves that we can get shit done. However, if we are unable to observe ourselves crushing accomplishments, then we will instead focus on other people who are making strides and hitting their goals. This is when the negative self talk will gain a foothold on your psyche. This will inevitably push our mental condition towards that of a second class citizen. We will be consumed and paralyzed with self-doubt, hesitation, and fear. I believe what they said to be completely true. Confidence feeds off momentum. The hardest part is getting the ball rolling in the first place. Without a doubt there will be failures, missteps, and shortcomings. But persistence is important. My first blackbelt accomplishment was in 2014 closing out American Nationals Nogi with @jtorresbjj in the weight class and @keenancornelius in the open class. It was a small accomplishment, but it was enough to keep me motivated and wanting more. If you never challenge yourself, you’ll never be able to build your confidence. As the old saying goes: a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Accountability. You are the only one who knows how much effort you are putting in to reach your goals. You are the one who truly knows if your goals are too modest. You are the one who will have to live with the results of the work you did or didn’t do. So fucking send it. Set the target as high as possible, set the toughest standard for yourself and don’t let moments of discouragement halt your progress. Push through the frustration with stubbornness and fire.
