Peak 10/40 - Mt. Hallback . Completed 6.6.19 . Day 2, I gingerly stepped out of my Jeep as the sun was starting to come up. I originally planned to camp at commissary ridge, the closest backcountry camping spot to my car, but given the weather, I ended up riding out the whiteout conditions in the back of my Jeep, alone on top of Mt. Mitchell. 🤫 . It was around 6:00 AM and after walking around for a little bit, I decided to lay back down. It would have been easy to just drive home and save the other Black Mountain peaks for another trip. I could have picked any of the abundant excuses that were in my head. I decided to give my body a little more rest and then try to get started again. . I finally hit the trail at 9:30 AM. There are a total of 10 #SB6K peaks in the Black Mountain Range. I had bagged the 6 peaks north of Mt. Mitchell on the first day of the trip, but now it was time to attempt to bag the 3 peaks to the south. . I started at a very slow pace, I was definetly feeling the first day's hike. Mt. Hallback is a little over two miles from Mt. Mitchell and it took me about an hour to make it that distance. Now I had to bushwack up to the top. The line wasn't to difficult to track down and fortunately, this was a much easier bushwach than Gibbs Mountain. . After about 10 minutes, I was standing on top of my 10th peak of this challenge. In that moment, this trek felt exceedingly special. After my first day out there I had every reason to quit and head home, but I decided to get back up and continue my original plan, despite the challenges. I refused to give up and now I was reaping the rewards of that effort. . I took a short break on top and enjoyed that victourious feeling. . Up next, Mt. Gibbes

When my work meeting finally let out, I ran to the van with three hours until midnight, an hour's car ride and five and a half miles to the top of Cold Mountain.⁣ ⁣ Cold Mountain is somewhat removed from the rest of the Great Balsams Range. It is accessed by either a slow and steady climb from the banks of the Little East Fork Pigeon River, or by traversing the long spine of the ridge between Cold Mountain and Shining Rock known as “The Narrows”.⁣ ⁣ I turned my headlamp on with two hours until midnight. I knew I’d have to hustle, so I dug my leki poles into the dirt, matching my breathing and pace for the long, steady climb ahead.⁣ ⁣ Turk’s Cap Lily in bloom lined the sides of the trail, brushing against me with cold wet fingers as I pushed past in a desperate attempt to gain the summit by midnight. It was going to be close. So close that I ignored my favorite wildflower, Wild Columbine, and began hopping along the ridge that finally ends at a summit marker overlooking a spectacular view of the Great Balsam range, now enveloped in near midnight darkness.⁣ ⁣ The Blue Ridge Mountains are my favorite place in the world. I love these well worn viewless hills, brilliant wildflowers and relentless humidity. The faraway lights of Canton sparkled below me and faded into the inky blackness of night at six thousand feet. Above me the Milky Way stretched out above the Great Balsam range shining and brilliant against the darkness of Shining Rock Wilderness. I started to shiver as my body cooled down from my desperate run.⁣ ⁣ There are so many nights like this that I'll never forget. When I feel so desperately lucky to love something as much as I love this place, these trails, these peaks. Sometimes I feel silly for my arbitrary challenges, feel tired of the midnight madness of bagging peaks, feel frustrated with the cold and the rain and the monotony. Then there are summits at 11:59pm that make it all worth it, and those are worth chasing after.

Living life through a screen was never on my bucket list. I come here purely for connection and dropping potent AF bombs of truth. How idealic is it to catch a fish and cook it on your BBQ? We thought it would be awesome! After doing some asking around we went for the option to try some fishing on our own first. We went to the shop, bought an allround fishing rod, obtained a fishing license and watched YouTube how to get it ready for usage. This all was still rather easy. Then we headed to the river. We surprised ourselves with the throwing. All smooth sailing. But then: we got stuck 3 times, Dave went in on 2 occasions to free it up, we lost one hook, Rianne had to untangle our line 4 times and we caught zero fish. Nonetheless we had the best day! And that was the longest hour and 20 minutes I ever experienced. The higher altitude was taking its toll. It was very demoralizing to need repeated breaks to catch my breath. 2.
