Here’s a breakfast idea for you this week🍳🍓🍌 Eating fruit on an empty stomach gently wakes up the digestive system, followed by nutrient dense protein & whole grains = happy gut! As many are starting to return to a busier schedule, I wanted to share some important digestion tips to keep things flowing smoothly. 1 RELAX! Being in a relaxed (parasympathetic) state before eating allows your body to get into digestion mood. If you’re rushing, stressed or on the go, your body is in a fight or flight state (sympathetic) and digestion is not a priority. Digestion is a north to south process - which will be continued in another post! 2 CHEW! Chewing your food slowly & thoroughly allows your body to later properly digest then absorb it. If you aren’t chewing your food enough, other parts of your digestive system have to do more work to break it down. It’s an orderly process, and for it to occur in the proper order you need to chew your food slowly and enough. 3 INCREASE STOMACH ACID. Many think our bodies produce too much stomach acid, when in reality many of us don’t produce enough (so those tums really aren’t doing you any good, bud) If we don’t have enough hydrochloric acid (HCL-aka stomach acid) it’s going to be pretty hard to break down our food. Warm lemon water 10 minutes before eating may help this! 4 LIMIT LIQUIDS. I’m aware I just gave the tip to try warm lemon water before your meal, but during your meal keep it to small sips if necessary. While eating we need our stomach acid to break down the foods, so if we’re consuming loads of other liquids during our meal the stomach acid will become diluted, ultimately putting a strain on digestion and may cause issues.
