My last dye pot for a bit. I tried a few different things today, some grevilia and sheok from the farm. I had a bit of an issue with some leaves with bugs on them that stuck to the paper, but that’s ok. It’s been a nice break away from my weaving.

“Palette of Place” is now largely wrapped up in bubble wrap to emerge again next year. However this piece has been acquired by the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery for their collection, which is fabulous. Thankyou for your support and encouragement 😊

I started this tapestry to demonstrate weaving during my exhibition “Palette of Place” @bathurstregionalartgallery It’s fitting to finish it on the last day of the exhibition. This is from a drawing I drew en plain air at Mount Herbert near Python Pool in the stunning Pilbara WA. This will feature in my next exhibition of Tapestries at @galleryone88finearts in April next year. No rest for the wicked🤣

Another session with the dye pot to print some more paper. I think I’ll leave the red onion skins for protein fibres, as they go brown on cellulose it appears. I’m very pleased with these strips which may end up as accordion books.

My exhibition, “Palette of Place”, closes today at the Bathurst Regional Gallery. 4 works have new homes, which is fantastic and so encouraging. With workshops, artist talks, demonstrations, and many visits to study the “Threads through art” exhibition, it’s been an amazing 6 weeks.
Thanks goes to Sarah Gulrich, and Emma Collerton and her team for bringing woven Tapestry to Bathurst and the central west.

Two storms have gifted us 36mm at the farm, only 6mm in town. Now? Well it’s blowing a gale and the dust has filled the valley. Our soils are just blowing in the wind. It’s just heartbreaking. These winds are ferocious, so glad we have no fires in our area. Can we skip summer by any chance?

I’m back at my stash, and have found fabric to dye for my next body of work, and some for ongoing work and also cloth to ponder.
The politics of textiles and the huge amount of money made by so few using the work of so many, has created a huge disconnect in the west with the cloth that is in everyone’s lives. In amongst my stash is old hand work, some rescued from rag bags, and boro. I started collecting this just before the prices skyrocketed and I don’t anymore. Some makes it into my art, but very judiciously, usually fragments. Which is what boro is about. Using cloth and valuing it until it is just fragments. In the photos are some fragments of boro, a mended wash cloth and an old piece of beautiful cotton that has worn and been mended before being turfed.
We need to value the work of makers whether artistic or utilitarian because that’s a part of being human. Hope you have had a great weekend folks.

I love rusty bits, and a rummage in a friend’s old out buildings yielded this. So after a quick clean it’s in the studio to be pondered. My first thought is to weave and stitch into it, but I might need a few rust prints off it first😉

Life has been busy but I am finding time to stitch this increasingly political piece of linen. It is a strip ripped off a discarded table cloth a friend gave me. As I pack up a selection of stuff from the farm today (extreme fire danger tomorrow), I am pondering stuff, why we keep it, what it means to people across generations, what stuff to pack and why does it matter anyway?
There has been so much loss in the north coast region already, it’s hard to comprehend with summer not even here.
Our farm isn’t in a fire prone area, but we have ground cover and a busy road at our gate. It only takes one cretin to flick a cigarette and we could be having a whole different conversation.
My thoughts are with those in the fire zones, the responders and their supporters and the average homeowners caught up in a firestorm. Stay safe. If it comes down to life, or stuff: choose life.

Tomorrow evening is the frame loom weaving workshop with the @bathurstregionalartgallery in conjunction with my exhibition “Palette of Place” and “Threads through Art” an exhibition of Australian woven Tapestries. This is my neighbour hand feeding a wild White Headed Pigeon, which landed in our garden last night in town. Scruffy and exhausted it overcame natural shyness to feed, not even looking up to check on its surroundings. We think it might have been caught up in a fire thermal on the central coast and completely lost its bearings. It’s normally found in the northeast of NSW. I’m not sure it will find it’s way home, but at least we could give it a feed.
The bushfires that are destroying vast tracks of habitat as well as people’s livihood, let’s hope there is enough diversity left to rebuild. Stay safe folks.

This is one of my ongoing stitch projects. I have a number on the go, working on them depending on time and space. This one is on a length of linen given to me by a friend, and is inspired by the huge river systems I saw on my flight up to Karratha from Perth. That’s where it started, who knows where it will end. I started to stitch the hated Kings Plains Gold mine last night. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to stitch a cross through it when the proposal is rejected.

This is a bit of progress in my Hearsons cove tapestry with the fishing braid. It’s actually hard to cut which is probably why it’s used up there with fish like Spanish mackerel out there. On this little loom it’s slow going. I plan to incorporate the plume of smoke from the gas plant flare tower which flared the whole time I was there due to maintenance and glitches. Not a good look for so called clean-ish energy.

My last day in the Pilbara for a while, so got out early and strolled along the beaches of Point Samson. The last time I was here it was blowing a gale, but this morning it was just a gentle breeze, low tide and still waters. Beautiful.
The fishing line is starting to infiltrate the turquoise of the shallow water. It’s not pleasant to weave with, which seems to fit with the discordance of it being thoughtlessly left in the environment.

My stay in Karratha is coming to a close. I have a tug ride tomorrow, and then it’s pack up my stuff, bring it back east and think about it for a bit. It has got very hot quite quickly, so being out and about is not much fun, so I’m finishing things. My last session of cyanotype was today. It’s been lots of fun, and I’ve learnt a lot about this process.

#heatherdunnartist #cyanotype #cyanotypes #blueandwhite #bluephotos
It’s pretty hot outside, so I’m starting to tie up the ends of my stay, and finally do some weaving. My plan to paint didn’t get much traction as I was distracted by cyanotype, which is fine😊. Here I’m using a little loom by @theunusualpear put together inside out so I can warp it my way, and using the tangle of fishing braid to infiltrate the inspiration of a little video I took at high tide at Hearsons Cove. Our thoughtless disregard for the environment leads to our perception of the environment being forever marked by litter, pollution and plastic. This is a very fine warp (for me), so I don’t imagine it will be very big😊

It’s a stinking hot day here, so an indoor day weaving and stitching. The forecast looks like more of the same. I think summer has arrived in Karratha.

I did a little happy dance when I found this amazing sea weed washed up on the beach at Dampier. This afternoon I had a windless window so exposed it on print making paper (this photo), watercolour paper (hot pressed, (I can’t get as even emulsion layer on this paper), and some linen and cotton. I’m going to soak it and press it next to see if I can sharpen up the image. I’m nearly done making images, and I’m starting to think about the next steps. I’ve learnt a lot.

A morning on the beach at Hampton Harbour in Dampier. Lots of young families frolicking in the shallows, while just along the beach a ways, Rio Tinto brings another Bulk Carrier in to load iron ore, while two others finish cargo.
I plan to head back on Sunday morning for a walk along the beach to look for cyanotype possibilities.

Today’s cyanotypes are objects from Settlers Beach near Cossack where the first white settlers landed back in the 1850’s. It’s a beautiful beach with lovely things to beachcomber, but the sandflies are ferocious 😕
It was a windy afternoon and one of my pieces of cloth blew away before it had finished exposing which produced a nice random result. I’m having a lot of fun with this and learning about supports and objects.

Settlers Beach at Cossack. A treasure trove for a beachcomber. Tiny pieces of coral and sea grass, shell fragments and sand dollars. I might have got a bit too engrossed and caught the sun. I’ll have to be more careful next time.

A cyanotype of spinifex. A prickly chaos of spiky grass that’s everywhere here. Finally the wind has dropped so I could place it outside without it blowing away. I’m going to have to pay a bit more attention to the application of the solution, as it’s a bit dusty. 😉
#heatherdunnartist #cyanotype #cyanotypes #cyanotypeprint #blueandwhite #pilbaraart
The Pilbara is full of contrasts. Ancient landscapes and heavy industry sit uncomfortably side by side. I got a ride on the pilot boat this evening to follow a gas tanker out to sea buoy and pick up the pilot. A beautiful evening, no whales about, but lots of fun😊
My first video. Excuse the Corellas outside😉
Some aspects of instagram are fabulous and one of them is seeing what creative souls are doing. I’ve been inspired by the folded book for a long time, particularly accordion books, making them as sketch books for a long time.
Here is a folded book form which has one cut in it and lends itself very well to cloth as well as paper.
I printed this today, and will think on it before I start stitching. My frame is a bit small so I needed to do this in stages. A bit nerve wracking.

Today is hot and now windy, so a perfect indoor day to think about next year and my next show. These cyanotypes are the result of gathering weeds on a walk. Of course some of these are local flora, but still considered weeds. Karratha means grassy land, so I’m focusing a bit on them, and they print beautifully. The conical flower is a Mulla Mulla.

Back to weaving while I think about next year. This is a sketch, there is only a horizon line drawn on the warp and I’m just about to wind some glittering sea bobbins. I enjoy weaving like this where I refer to a photo merely as a guide, and avoid the dreaded inking on. It can be a bit tricky keeping the sheds under control. It’s a great way to use up bobbin ends as well.

For me, one of the best ways to start something new after a long series is to tidy up! So my paper and treasures cupboard is getting the treatment. I’ve found a lot of lovelies to think about in the process. Now if I could just fit it all back in...
I’m sorry for the radio silence, but I’m a bit focused on getting my ducks in a line for 3 exhibitions, and my most disliked part of creating is finishing. That is tidying up the backs of Tapestries, getting them ready for the framers and sewing on the dreaded Velcro.
So with Amy Shark, Dido and others on maximum noise, I’m stitching away and almost there.

The doggies and I came up to the farm at O’Connell to enjoy the snow. Sandy ended up with snow dags, which have to be melted off with warm water. We had about 5 cm up the slope, the most we have seen for a few years. So coldly beautiful 🥶
