⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @helsinkifacades | Helsinki. One facade at a time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Helsinki Facades [ 396 ] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where: Snellmaninkatu 3-5, Kruununhaka. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who: C.A. Edelfelt, 1863. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: Located on the north east corner of the Senate Square this building called 'Arppeanum' is kind of hiding behind the mighty Cathedral next to it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nevertheless once you look you realize that it actually has one of the prettiest facades of the whole city. It has features that resembles venetian gothic architecture, which I enjoy a lot! 🤩👌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: The building was originally built for the university's chemistry departments educational and museum purposes. The building is called Arppeanum according to one of its professors Adolf Edvard Arppe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you know that the district of Kruununhaka gets its name from the former royal artillery's horse paddocks from the early 1800's that used to be located in the vicinity of the street of Rauhankatu. 🐴🤴🏻⚔️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #helsinkifacades | #myhelsinki | #HFkluuvi at Arppeanum

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @helsinkifacades | Helsinki. One facade at a time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Helsinki Facades [ 391 ] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Building: Uusi ylioppilastalo / New student house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where: Mannerheimintie 5, Kluuvi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who: Armas Lindgren & Wivi Lönn, 1910. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: Grand building located right in the center of the city! That decoration on top of the facade (like a 🏰) and the balcony are my favourite aspects! 🤩👌🏻 What are yours? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: The building used to be called Osakuntatalo and was mainly used by the student nations at the university is Helsinki. Five of the fifteen nations at the University of Helsinki still work in the building: the Finnish-speaking Eteläsuomalainen osakunta, Savolainen osakunta and Varsinaissuomalainen osakunta along with the Swedish-speaking Åbo Nation and Östra Finlands Nation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See the whole building's facade with a grand reflection and the inside staircase on HF 330 and the statues above the main entrance on HF 388! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you know more about this building? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @helsinkifacades | Helsinki. One facade at a time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Helsinki Facades [ 390 ] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Building: Amos Rex Museum. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where: Mannerheimintie 22-24, Kamppi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who: JKMM Architects, 2018 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: The coolest new museum in the city! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: From the museum website “Designed by architectural firm JKMM, the art museum’s new facility is built beneath the Lasipalatsi square and comprises 2,170 square metres (23,358 sq ft) of highly adaptable and technically well-equipped exhibition space. The goal of the design has been to create as flexible facilities as possible to conform to the needs of ever-changing contemporary art. Along with the construction of the new art museum, the protected Lasipalatsi building has been gently renovated back to its former glory”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first photo is taken from the lobby looking up and through one of the skylights to the neat staircase of Lasipalatsi (HF 366) (see that bird as well!), the second is from the lobby and its really cool ceiling and lights and the third one is from the @teamlab_news popular exhibition, which turned the museum into several large video installations! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you already visited @Amos konst museum? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @helsinkifacades | Helsinki. One facade at a time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Helsinki Facades [ 389 ] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Building: Postitalo. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where: Mannerheiminaukio 1, Kluuvi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who: Jorma Järvi, Erik Lindroos & Kaarlo Borg, 1938. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: One of the most prominent examples of functionalism in Helsinki basking in the winter sunset's warm light! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: In 1934 The Finnish Postal Service held a competition for the design of their new headquarters to be located in a prime location in the city, right next to the railway station in Kluuvi. Two young architects Jorma Järvi and Erik Lindroos won the competition with their design regardless of their young age. A more experienced architect Kaarlo Borg was also included in the design team to bring some experience to the project. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The construction started during the winter of 1935. The frame of the building is constructed of bricks and reinforced concrete, a material which was gaining popularity at the time. The facade is clad with yellow tiles, which shape resembles the postal stamp of the time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The building reached its roof height in 1936 but was officially completed a bit later in 1938 just before the break of the second world war. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Technical aspects, speed and functionality of the spaces are highlighted in the building, which fits in with the style of functionalism and it's core design principles. The lobby in the first floor of the building is quite cool! It was originally used for postal offices space but today there is a camera store. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A fun fact: The building was the first in the city to have a helipad. The helipad was used during the Summer Olympics of 1952, which were held in Helsinki. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you know more about this building? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @helsinkifacades | Helsinki. One facade at a time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Helsinki Facades [ 388 ] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Building: Uusi ylioppilastalo / New student house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Where: Mannerheimintie 5, Kluuvi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who: Armas Lindgren & Wivi Lönn, 1910. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: Beautiful details over the entrance of this grand building in the heart of the city! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: These statues (in total there are four) depict the four temperaments according to the ancient and medieval medicine system known as Humorism. The four temperaments were melancholic, choleric, phlegmatic and sanguine. The two latter ones are pictured here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Humorism, or humoralism, was a system of medicine detailing the makeup and workings of the human body, adopted by Ancient Greek and Roman physicians and philosophers, positing that an excess or deficiency of any of four distinct bodily fluids in a person—known as humors or humours—directly influences their temperament and health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The statues were masterfully done by a Finnish sculptor Johannes Haapasalo according to the idea of the architect Armas Lindgren. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you know more about this building? Koskinen, 1906. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why: Sometimes the side entrances are way more prettier than the main ones! 🤩 What do you think of this one? Quite a stunner, am I right? This must have originally been some kind of shop space. Today I would assume it being turned into an apartment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: Did you know that in1979 only 48 of 97 apartments had a bathroom in the apartment itself. The rest of the residents used the communal bathrooms which were located in the hallways! 🤓✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you know more about this building? The district comprises of these small villas, which all are very rich in details! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I definitely recommend taking a walk here if haven't been in Eira! Magnificent don't you think too? 😍👌 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: Located on Valkosaarenkari in front of Kaivopuisto this wooden pavilion was built for a yachting club NJK Nylandska Jaktklubben in 1900. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It is still in its original use by the club and there is also a guest harbour. The club has kept the building in its original shape! There is also a restaurant in the building! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ NJK is Finland's largest yachting club and it was established already in 1861! What do you think? 🤔🤓 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trivia: Antti Ijäs (born 1875) was a Finnish master builder and he designed a few buildings in Helsinki during his career. Did you know that surprisingly many buildings (also famous ones) of central Helsinki around the turn of the 20th century have been designed and built by master builders instead of architects.
