After 5 long years of correspondence, finally had the honor in meeting my good friend, Matt Cage, during our 27th annual East Texas Herpetological Society Conference here in Houston. Matt gave an excellent presentation on his many years of exploring the Amazon region. A dream of mine since I was a child, I look forward to getting down there hopefully soon #amazon #amazonjungle #peru #brazil #herp #herping #fieldherping #eths #herpsociety #expeditions #southamerica #exploring #friends #friendship #herpers #intothewild

Herp of the Week: The Red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) is the only newt species endemic to North Carolina. This salamander ranges throughout the entirety of NC from the coast to the mountains. They are also one of the more common salamanders; thus, they can be found fairly easily. The main identification marker for them would be the red spots with black borders that run the length of their spine. Juveniles of this species are known as red efts due to their bright orange coloration. Adults will be darker greens and browns, but they still retain the red spots seen throughout almost all the life stages of this animal. Photos by: @dan.guinto

#tbt to herping last week with The Wildlife Society! . The first 5 photos are from last week's TWS meeting out at the Purdue Wildlife Area. Members were able to interact with 4 species of snakes and several species of frogs and toads. The photos feature in order a gartnersnake, a foxsnake, a bullfrog, a northern watersnake, and a midland brown snake. 🐍 . The next day, herps working group conducted Plains Leopard Frog surveys with the state herpetologist out at Granville. Some of their finds included smallmouth salamanders, a green gray treefrog, and several hatchlings racerunners. 🦎 . . . #purduefnr #purduewildlife #wildlife #herps #reptiles #amphibians #snake #frog #salamander #herping #TWS

'Mokoro Treat' Whilst whisking our way through the Okavanga Delta in the dug-out canoes called 'Mokoros', we were extremely lucky and highly excited to find this GORGEOUS Angolan Reed Frog - Hyperolius parallelus. I literally nearly fell out of my canoe.... It was tough to try to balance with all the excitement, and in the rocking canoe to try to hold my camera steady enough for a clear shot. On top of the fact that we had some rather close elephant encounters, it definitely wasn't the most optimal photographic moment, but I am elated nonetheless to have these in the bag! Have an awesome Thursday, Frog season is upon us!!! <3 #thelionheartexperience #frog #frogs #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #photooftheday #herps #herping #frogging #angolanreedfrog #hyperolius #explore #discover #travel #Botswana #Africa #gorgeous #beautiful #love #bright #exciting #find #cute #nature_sultans at Okavango Delta

Great Plains Rat Snake (Pantherophis emoryi) found with @rye20jones this summer. Probably my favorite find of the year, considering the habitat and rarity of this snake in its relatively disjunct/unique Utah populations.

Lmk your favorite of the bunch! Had an amazing interaction with this individual back in May. When I first approached him he was super defensive. I took some shots and left him alone. Later I found him again on the move and layed in front of his path so I could get super close shots. Eventually he literally licked the camera lens and got so comfortable around me that I could move freely and get whatever shots I wanted without him being bothered. These animals have an amazing ability to learn and asses their environment. Once he understood that me and my camera weren't a threat, he acted as if we weren't even there and I was able to get within a few inches of him for shots. Eventually he curled up under a pine tree after having moving about 75 yards from the original spot I saw him in. More pics to come of this guy but here's the first bunch. Also in the 5th pic he is taking a poop which was an interesting thing to witness and capture. Also the 8th pic is a vouture shot of how close he passed by me without being bothered by my presence. I watched this long necked turtle waddle across 50m of open grassland like a nervous mother. I fended off a dog and I was ready to pull out my ninja moves on any ravens that got the wrong idea ... and then success 😅😊🐢🐢 Last week I found two deceased adult long necked turtles at Perry Lakes so I was super duper happy to see this guy 💚🐢🌿

The second black rat snake found recently in southwestern Wisconsin. My dad and I cruised this around mid day. This was a good sized snake. Probably about 5-6 ft. I was thinking I might find some snakes this weekend but seeing as it's gonna be in the 90's both days, I suspect that that'll slow their journey back towards their dens. #herping #blackratsnake #reptile #snake #road #roadcruising

Christmas Island Giant Gecko (Cyrtodactylus sadleiri). This species is the only endemic reptile on Christmas Island that isn't either extinct or extinct in the wild. The decline of Christmas Islands native reptiles is likely due to the introduction of pest species such as feral cats, black rats, crazy ants and wolf snakes🦎 🇨🇽 at Christmas Island

NO IT'S NOT A SNAKE - Just a very long legless lizard. This Burton's Legless Lizard (Lialis burtonis) was so big I even mistook it for a snake from a distance. The average max size for this species is usually only 60cm and that would be considered a big one. At a whopping 75cm this impressive specimen was the biggest one I've encountered by far. Although they look very snake-like in appearance; to tell them apart keep an eye out for their long and pointy, wedge-shaped snout. They also differ from snakes by having ear openings and fleshy tongues, rather than a forked like snakes. This is Australia's most widespread reptile so chances are you'll come across one. They are reptile specialists feeding mostly on skinks, but also small Geckoes, Dragons, other Legless Lizards and even small Snakes. With their long jaws they aim for the chest area, holding biting down firmly until the victim suffocates and can be swallowed whole. #leglesslizard at Cape Range National Park

The Texas Coral Snake is highly venomous, vivid in color, and spends most of its time underground. In the spring they become surface active with consistent rain. If you are lucky enough to see one keep and safe distance and enjoy its beauty, before you know this shy little serpent will disappear right before your eyes into the leaf litter.

A juvenile Terciopelo (Bothrops asper) are semi-arboreal and perch on vegetation up to 150cm above the ground. Juveniles use tail-luring and and more venomous than adults. Juvenile terciopelos feed mostly on lizards, insects, centipedes, frogs, and other snakes. The species is known to be very aggressive, but none of the specimen we had encountered was. The Terciopelo is an highly adapted and widely distributed species with large and stable populations that thrive in human-modified environments with a lot of rats. Overuse of pesticides, decline of prey (for example frogs) can affect populations of the species, but the ability adapt to new environments makes it very likely that the species will survive for a while. Surprise visitor at work last night! I think the last time I saw a spadefoot toad was in 2003, when Hurricane Isabel blew through the area. Spadefoot activity is usually associated with excessive precipitation. I can only guess what this little guy was doing out and about, but I sure was glad to see him. #easternspadefoot #spadefoottoad #spadefoot #scaphiopusholbrookii #toad #frog #frogsofinstagram #herping #herpsofinstagram #amphibian #amphibiansofinstagram #cumberlandcounty #northcarolina at Fayetteville, North Carolina
