🔈Completed the 15-mile 5000ft Mt Wilson out and back climb, and got the chance to take my balls out at the summit! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Suffering from a hip injury can be especially daunting for a hiker. I found a sweet flat rock, put my ball down and literally just laid down on top of it and wiggled back and forth, which dug into my psoas and gave me some relief. Helped so much! Then I turned over and rolled the area between my butt and lower back. Had some soreness there due to the hip injury affecting my gait. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Next time you go on a hiking trek, consider throwing one of these super light cork balls in your pack. You won’t even notice it’s there. Guarantee it will be worth it. Hip Internal Rotation is 🔑 If you’re not currently watching my “story” on Instagram, my Fit Fam recently requested more content explaining how I use mobility to bridge the gap with strength training 💪🏻 So... here is an example 🙌🏻 Pay close attention to my left foot on this climbing route 👀 You’ll notice on the first movement a significant pivoting that requires internal rotation of the hip while bearing my body weight 😬 The following videos are examples of how you can gradually ramp up intensity of internal rotation of the hip prior to bearing load. 🙌🏻 What movements do you perform on a regular basis?? 🧐 Do they require hip mobility⁉️ If so, check out my FREE HIP MOBILITY GUIDE in the link in my bio and let me know what movements you need help with in the comments below! 👇🏻

Hip Mobility CARs 👀🙋‍♀️ --- Controlled articular rotations (CARs) are a great way to expand Hip mobility. Hips mobility is very important to health and function. It will allow us to walk, run, jump, dance and an important factor in helping us get our butts 🍑🍑 to the ground when we squat. This movement is a great way to help expand joint space and mobility in the hip. ---- How to do: I often tell my clients to think about how you scrape the bowl with your spoon after eating a bowl of icecream... We want as much rotation and movement as possible! 1.) Start by leaning against the wall and enagging the core so your body is nice and straight. 2.) Bring your knee up towards you chest as far s you can WITHOUT moving the back. 3,) While holding it up swing your leg out to the side again as far as you can WITHOUT moving your back. 4.) Living with APT (anterior pelvic tilt) hasn’t been easy on me. Especially on my knees, ankles and hips. Stretching has become a normal part of my workout routines and it has done wonders for my overall mobility in my hips and has done miracles for my lower back. I’m nowhere as near as flexible as I need/want to be but the point of this is to show that I’m making progress. “Calories are needed to grow” by @stepstoahealthieryou In order to gain muscle you need to eat calories! Your body needs those calories to build, no amount of protein, hormones, etc can change this fact! Your body needs to be in a calorie surplus (taking in more than your maintenance calories!) Want to improve your flat 👣 and foot strength? ⁣ ⁣ First, there's nothing inherently wrong with flat 👣. It doesn't mean you have a higher risk of injury, or pain, or dysfunction, or any thing else that might have negative connotations. Some people are born with flat feet, some with higher arches and some in between. It's all normal! ⁣ ⁣ We just get a lot of questions about how to improve foot strength and stability in our clinic, so here's a quick exercise we use with our clients to help them learn how to properly stabilize their feet. 💃🏼⁣ ⁣ Put one end of a mini band around your foot and the other under a kettlebell or anchored around something stable. Set-up so the band is pulling your foot inward and allow it to flatten your foot. Now work against the pull of the band to create an arch in your foot. Imagine keeping a quarter crushed under your big toe and only push out far enough to feel your pinky toe and heel firmly planted into the ground.⁣ ⁣ You should now be in a good tripod position, with your big toe, pinky toe and heel all firmly rooted to the ground. Once you've found this position, hold for a few seconds and repeat! Once you get comfortable here, you can practicve maintaining this foot position during squats, lunges, deadlifts, etc. ⁣ ⁣ Give it a try and let us know how it goes below! at Columbus, Ohio

19.1 PREP with my bud @dougcarterfst. We’re focusing on warming up the glutes so you don’t end up with a sore back after this one. . . 1 - Hip Rotators. Focus on keeping a rigid core and straight arms. Try not to shift to one side or the other and really feel that side glute working! 10 forward + 10 backwards before switching legs. . . 2 - Banded Squats. Nice and slow reps to ensure activation and control through the entire movement. I’ve added a heavier med ball than what I’ll use in the workout to also get my back and shoulders awake. . . 3 - Hip Flexor Stretch. I chose this but you can sub a hamstring or quad stretch instead depending on where you feel tight. Before the workout I like to keep it short and sweet, holding and releasing for a few seconds at a time. . . Now go get after it!!! Are you aware? . Whenever you are working out, are you aware of what your bodies natural tendencies for movement are? . The other day I was working with a client who was having trouble increasing the weight during her back squats. . After working with her for a bit I noticed that while she squats her hips tend to shift dramatically to the left. . This is what we call a “power leak”. . Because her hips shift, her body is no longer working as efficiently as it could, causing her to lose power and strength. . She has been squatting for months now and she was completely unaware that her hips were shifting. . This also became the answer to the reason why she occasionally ran into lower back pain after squatting. . So what did I do to help her out? . First I decreased the weight she was using so that she can practice keeping her hips neutral while distributing the weight evenly on both of her feet. . Then I gave her a couple of single leg workouts which we used to strengthen the position with the goal of making her squat as symmetrical and efficient as possible. . The other day she just texted me saying that she just hit a new personal best on the squat and feels absolutely no lower back pain. . If she would have continued squatting the way she has been, she could have caused more harm to her back or developed less efficient patterns that would have prevented her from increasing her squat strength. . A little bit of legs. . Weighted split lunges for strength within a deep lunge range. Going for a strong stretch in the front of the hip and front knee in full flexion with back leg locked straight. My back leg felt like it was locked straight but from this video it doesn’t look like it. Oh well 😀 . I also did some knee extensions, hopping into squats in between. 🤔I frequently hear people try and rationalize that they have a "hip flexor strain" because they have pain in the front of their hip. But the reality is, that there are other things that can cause pain in the front of the hip. . ⚡A true hip flexor strain would elicit a familiar reproduction of your pain when the hip flexors are challenged. We can easily replicate this in a variety of ways, but we still don't know if the pain is truely from the hip flexors. . 🎥In the video, I demonstrate a quick motion you can perform to see if you can reproduce your familiar discomfort. Make sure your leg isn't performing any of the work to make sure that the muscles don't have any chance to produce pain (if that's the case). Perform the motion to your hip by moving your legs with ONLY your arms. . ⚡If you do happen to get pain with resisting hip flexon BUT NOT with the passive motion, it is likely your hip flexors are involved. But if you DON'T get the pain with resisted hip flexion, but DO have pain with the passive motion, you may have irritation of some kind in your hip joint. . 🤷‍♂️Either way, I recommend you see a rehab professional before attempting to treat yourself in any scenario. . You’ll have to be under your maintenance calories to loss weight over time. If your weight isn’t changing your not in a deficit! Great relationship with food It’s not healthy to see food as good or bad! You can have the cake in moderation or as long as you’re in a calorie deficit. Does lifting and cardio frequently you have to gain muscle to have a better looking body, it will also help you lose calories. Yes cardio is amazing but please DON’T NEGLECT LIFTING! Yes you’ll lose weight but you’ll become skinny fat and that’s just as bad. Bloat maxing is bad More of a joke but it refers to dirty bulking which isn’t smart. People will an tell you “you have to bulk to gain muscle and lose body fat” which is absolute garbage please don’t believe these guys!

Have you ever been shrouded by doubt when trying to make a decision? Good, that makes 7 billion of us then. It appears that it’s human nature to be perplexed by the myriad routes available to us, all posing various pros and cons. That goes for both career paths, and whether to choose the Crema or Valencia filter alike (hint: it’s always Crema). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ People tell me to ‘listen to my gut’ or ‘just do you’. But whenever I have tried to access my innermost self, in a bid to learn about who I am and what I want to be, I always end up feeling torn between conflicting thoughts and emotions, all etched into my mind via media, upbringing, people and experiences, like graffiti on a toilet cubicle door. Just for once I’d like to be one of those people with a punchy, hard-hitting background that seems to have forged the mindset they have today, like an x-factor contestant, riding on the wave of their sob story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why, you might ask, am I [personal trainer] writing about this? Well, it’s been apparent to me in the last couple of years, how much people’s health and fitness is dependant on their perceived identity, and the stories they weave inside their own heads, about who they really are. For example, you may be someone that struggles to motivate themselves to exercise, or someone that rises at 05:00am to practice yoga everyday. You may never have been a sporty person, or you may live and breathe through it. You may salivate over the prospect of a big, fat, greasy Dominoes pizza, or you may relish in the chance to nourish your body with organic, nutrient dense foods. Because that is who you are...or is it? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you break it down, the only thing going on inside our heads is just a cacophony of electro-chemical noise, and the yarns we spin to justify that noise. Yes, you may have DNA which dictates whether you are predisposed to store fat under your arms or under your arse. You may be a 6ft 5 muscle bound, calorie burning machine, or someone who puts on pounds just looking at a KitKat. But none of that bears significance........ NEED SOMETHING GOOD FOR YOUR HIPS? - Try this Mountain Climber Hip Stretch. - 1️⃣ Setup in a kneeling push-up position. 2️⃣ Walk one foot up to the outside of your hand. 3️⃣ Start by prying your hip out, it helps to let your ankle roll out as you pry. Perform 3-5 reps. 4️⃣ Now reach that same side elbow down toward the floor as you exhale. Perform 3-5 reps. 5️⃣ Rinse and repeat on the opposite side. - This is a fun drill to add into warmups and as active rests during training. - You can also just perform these on their own. Improve your squat with hip flexion mobility: More often than not a lack of ankle mobility quickly takes the blame for a lack of squat depth. While this is commonly present, I would say it is equally likely that you will find a lack of hip flexion in these individuals. The band distracted hip flexion mobilization is a great way to create temporary changes in accessory joint motion of the hip, tissue tension, and range of motion. Performance Points: 1.) Maintain a braced midsection throughout the movement 2.) Pull the the knee in towards the chest, as well as slight downward pressure. 3.) The movement should ONLY come from the hip joint.
