We closed Hispanic Heritage Month with a traditional attire day. Finally, I was able to wear my #gaucho outfit, although I’m missing a poncho. It was a packed month, full of school wide activities, some worked, some need improvement. (campus wide karaoke 🎤🤔) Now, as things settled down, I can say I am beyond happy for how our whole school got involved! More than ever, teachers played bingo, made papel picado, listened to our songs, received readers, shared food and of course the piñata contest! < fun note, the piñata contest reached 45,000 people worldwide in Facebook > Panchito strong! 🐷 Although the official month is gone, it will always be time to find stories, voices, and ways to represent our culture. Our students need to know and embrace their roots, it’s is the only way they can grow strong. 🌲🌳 It is in the little things, like honoring our first language, making a point of keeping a balance, creating resources in Spanish and instilling a pride of being #bilingual, #bicultural in our students. #teacherlife #hispanicheritagemonth #GallowayHonorsHHM #latin

Fear has meddled in my life for as long as I can remember. Whether it was learned indirectly from my mother, watching her work tirelessly and endlessly without taking a vacation or fighting for well deserved raises, or after experiencing instability and uncertainty during my first round at being an entrepreneur, fear has always been present. I’d say to any person, especially young women of color, to actively fight against their fears. We are all so insanely gifted and we are meant to put those gifts to work to be a blessing to others. Limiting what we can do and who we can become out of fear of the unknown is a complete disregard to what we are purposed to be. Soar, thrive, fight for yourself! @iamdinorah ... New Blog post up for #hispanicheritagemonth

Today, October 15, is the last day of Hispanic Heritage month. I totally failed at posting influential Hispanic figures everyday of the celebration, but I have to be honest- balancing school work, running, and everything else in life is hard enough. It can take me up to 2 hours or more to make the posts I make because, believe it or not, whenever I write about an influential figure to try and teach my audience I am learning about them at the same time as y’all. My history is not something that is taught to me in history class, I have to do my own research and rely on my family to educate me on the history that they know and rely on my own willingness to learn more about my people. America likes to act like no other people’s history exists besides White Europeans. I wanna wrap this month up by sharing a poem that I wrote last night. I woke up in the middle of the night and heard the words “Immaculate Conception”, immediately it gave me an idea and I opened up my notes app and began typing. The Immaculate Conception is the representation of the purity that the Virgin Mary holds. It is believed within the Catholic faith that since the very moment that she was created her soul was always pure. I used this same concept to combat the idea of Hispanics being dirty people. It’s not uncommon for Hispanics to be referred to as “dirty wet-back, beaner, boarder-bunny, boarder-nigger, taco-nigger, or scratch-back” and today’s political climate doesn’t help- but it doesn’t necessarily make it worse either because we’ve always dealt with this ignorance and hate, if anything today’s political climate is just bringing attention to what’s been going on for decades to white Americans. What might come as a shock to y’all is nothing new to us. But just because it’s nothing new doesn’t mean we believe it to be true. These hateful things that are spat upon us are far from truth. We are pure within our existence. We are strong, resilient and intelligent. We are beautiful people, as a community and as individuals...... REFER TO COMMENT SECTION FOR THE REST OF MY CAPTION ❤️✊🏽 #HispanicHeritageMonth #Poetry #Latinx

I always carry my heritage in my heart since it formed who I am; in my hands since it’s what I give, and in my dreams since it shapes my perspective and my goals. Today marks the last day of Latinx Heritage Month, and I wanted to share my current reads in support of amplifying #Latinx stories and voices. It’s also the last day to participate in @penguinrandomhouse’s hashtag campaign for @weneeddiversebooks: #CuentosUnidos ⁣ ⁣ SABRINA & CORINA⁣ ⁣ “Kali Fajardo-Anstine's magnetic debut story collection breathes life into her Indigenous Latina characters and the land they inhabit. Set against the remarkable backdrop of Denver, Colorado--a place that is as fierce as it is exquisite--these women navigate the land the way they navigate their own lives: with caution, grace, and quiet force.” ⁣ ⁣ PRAYERS FOR THE STOLEN ⁣ ⁣ “Ladydi Garcia Martínez is fierce, funny and smart. She was born into a world where being a girl is a dangerous thing. In the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, women must fend for themselves, as their men have left to seek opportunities elsewhere. Here in the shadow of the drug war, bodies turn up on the outskirts of the village to be taken back to the earth by scorpions and snakes. School is held sporadically, when a volunteer can be coerced away from the big city for a semester. In Guerrero the drug lords are kings, and mothers disguise their daughters as sons, or when that fails they “make them ugly” – cropping their hair, blackening their teeth- anything to protect them from the rapacious grasp of the cartels. And when the black SUVs roll through town, Ladydi and her friends burrow into holes in their backyards like animals, tucked safely out of sight.” ⁣ ⁣ Have you read either of these?⁣ Share your thoughts! ⁣

Amazing Hispanic Heritage Event by @eparatodoslawrence I was happy to see most of our community leaders make presence. Many of which I’m honored to have met through my Mother and others I’m getting to know now. Being able to see our leaders enjoy, network & learn more in depth about the passion & commitment EParaTodos have with our community, our economy, dreams, and change was satisfying. Congrats to Janin Duran & Andres Silver for the opportunities - open doors you are providing to people like me; that come to you with only and idea of a dream, and you make that dream a reality. We are a community united by CULTURE & LOVE 👏🏼🧡🙏🏼✨👑 . . . .

Hispanic have had a huge influence all over the world. Many people enjoy our traditions and delicious foods. However not everyone accepts our culture, as many view us as been a pollutant to the population. “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” -Justice Sonia Sotomayor . As a proud Latina, it has been an amazing month celebrating and recognizing the contributions and vital presence of both Hispanics and Latin Americans to the United States. Did you know that only 4% of US lawyers are Hispanic, and that less than 2% of American lawyers are Latinas? As a Lawtina those statistics are disheartening. We obviously have a lot of work to do! But, this month has highlighted our beautiful language, our culture and our successes, showing how capable we are of breaking through those barriers. All photographs by Al Rendon 📸 who speaks of Selena below: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "I never saw a big change in Selena. I knew her from 1992 until 1995. Once you reach a certain level of popularity, too many people are trying to communicate with you, constantly trying to make contact. That’s where her father and his management team was so effective – they were able to control all the people crawling out of the woodwork. But that helped her concentrate on being herself, and she was always approachable, appreciative of her fans, signed autographs and posed for pictures, she was very humbled by all the attention. There will never be another Selena, but she is a significant influence and her music will live on. Obviously, 20 years later, people are still talking about her, she was included in the Smithsonian’s list of American Cool, there’s a festival in Corpus Christi – Selena will be a household name, and her music will be with us forever."

Yo vengo de todas partes, Y hacia todas partes voy: Arte soy entre las artes, En los montes, monte soy [ José Martí ] . Quite literally posting at the final hour in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) as a memmber of both the Yoga & Latino community. . Though I was conflicted about posting since I'm "only half" Latina, I realize that I feel it with my whole heart. I am Cuban, just as much as I am Scottish or American; or a yogi. . I am so grateful to my practice for helping me see that though I am a mixture of different races and cultures that my roots still run deep ... and it is ok to own that. On this last day of #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth, we look at Afro-Latinx pride expressed through hair. ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏽(🎥 @natashasalford @kiana.quinonez @pulitzercenter) #AfroLatinx #Negra #BlackPride #TeamNatural #PuertoRico #GrioInternational 🌍🇵🇷 Reposted from @thegrio

I shouldn’t be here...No, really! I should NOT be here! 🤔Everything about my story does not put me here at the Gala Latina or with CLUES or even in Minnesota of all places—but I’m here! 😅This was no accident, though. I made it here by sheer luck that a family adopted me as an infant out of poverty and destitution, and and that they instilled in me a strong set of values. I made it here by fiercely defending my Latin roots and seeking to know more about my heritage from the time I was a little girl. 🇨🇴✨I made it here by taking a leap to be the person I always needed growing up, but for someone else—even when people told me I wasn’t fit for such a role, nor would I rise up to such a calling. 😕 So, why me then? I don’t know that I’ll ever have that answer. What I do know is that I wouldn’t be here if I let others define me, 💃🏻if I shied away from being different, 🤪 and if I didn’t take that risk to do something that I thought I’d maybe fail! Stand tall. Be the anomaly. Stay true. And, above all else be there not just for others, but also for your community—whatever and wherever your community may be. ✊🔥 #cluesgalalatina #galalatina #clues #hispanicheritagemonth #latinas #latinastrong #orgullo #community #comunidades #hopetoaction #comunidadeslatinasunidasenservicio @cluesofficial

I know it's a late post, but today's the last day of #latinxheritagemonth and I really wanted to end with one more. After the Poet X, I had super high expectations for this one, but I tried to temper them a little, just in case. Well, no need! 💕 Emoni Santiago is over the moon. Her high school is going to be offering a culinary arts class, and there's even a trip to Spain at the end. Emoni's been cooking for as long as she can remember. Cooking is in her blood, in her bones, and she works magic whenever she's in the kitchen and she dreams of making a career out of it. So she knows she has to be in this class. But enrolling in the class isn't the key to her dreams, and it isn't as smooth as she thinks it will be. Especially when she's trying to juggle school and all the stuff that comes with being a teenager - plus her child, her grandmother, who isn't as healthy as she used to be, and a whole pile of other issues. 🍲 But oh, is her journey worth following. 🥘 Now, a quick note: when you hear that Emoni is a high school senior with a two year old daughter, you might be tempted to dismiss her as a cliche, but she's anything but. In fact, it is a testament to EA's skill that Emoni's daughter is a seamlessly a part of her life as anything else. It defines her only as she lets it - only in the sense that being a mother is a part of her life. 🍜 The prose is gorgeous, lyrical and makes every page come alive (not to mention the recipes included and dishes described!). I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by @acevedowrites, and it is magnificent. Her voice is mezmerizing and magical. (If you you're looking to foray into audiobooks, START HERE.) This is, like The Poet X, a must read. Came back from Bay Area inspired, energized and motivated to pursue my mission: To have a positive LatinX representation in Montreal. Also, got to end up LatinX/Hispanic Heritage Month at the first Montreal Hermanas Edition presented by @neverwasaverage and @the_woman_power hosted by @dela_rose & @ifimevil . Let me tell you that my heart is full and I am grateful for what is happening. #soylatinx

inspiring latina-meet karina// I can't believe today is the last day of #latinxheritagemonth and I couldn't end it without sharing my dear friend Karina of @karinamora_prints with you. She is one inspiring lady....I look up to her immensely. I seriously don't know how she does it all, but this mami is someone to follow and learn all about her art and showcasing all the beauty and culture Mexico has to offer beyond margaritas and Taco Tuesday’s. - When I asked her what inspired her to start her brand: @karinamora_prints , here's what she said: "I was inspired to start my new business a few years ago after having a few interactions with people in which there was a lack of basic understanding of Mexican culture. It was then, that I knew the importance of passing on Mexican traditions to my children, and how it was up to me to be intentional about it. I went to Mexico to clear my head and think through my feelings. While I was there I decided to create a platform to share and bridge that gap of understanding through sharing my art and pairing it with education about Mexican history." - You can head on over to the blog to read her full story. Just be sure to click the link in profile, and tap the blog tab. - - - #authenticadventureco #latinofamily #latinamom #liveonpurpose #browngirlblogger #chicagomom #browngirls #latinamomblogger #wahm #momlife #familytime #familymatters #goafteryourdreams #givemejesus #christianblogger #latinaownedbusiness #shareyourstory #latinas #hispanicgirls #hispanicheritagemonth #curlyhair #educatedwoman #latinx #latinaartist #chicagophotographer #latinxheritagemonth #latinaowned #latinx #hispanicmarketing
