✨Book Review✨ ⠀ “Occasionally they pass fields ablaze with spring flowers and Lale smiles to himself. Flowers. He learned from a young age, from his mother, that women love them. When would be the next time he could give a girl flowers?” 💐😭 ⠀ After flying through multiple light rom-coms this summer, I was ready for a more serious read so I picked this one up off of my TBR shelf. I’m so glad I did! ⠀ The Tattooist of Auschwitz is based on a true story and it follows Lale Sokolov who is a prisoner at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The story follows his horrific two years as the Tatowierer and the senseless suffering that happened right before his eyes. Late tattoos a fellow prisoner, Gita, and her presence gives him hope for the future. ⠀ This was a beautiful and heartbreaking story. I think it was so powerful of a read because I was constantly reminded that the events were based on the real Lale Sokolov’s life. I loved so much about this story, but I did feel that it was very fast-paced and did not have the depth that I was expecting and hoping for. I think the story could have been even more powerful if some parts of the storyline could have been expanded on. My belief is the author made the chapters short and lacking some detail because of the seriousness of Lale’s experiences. ⠀ If you love WWII historical fiction, check this one out! I look forward to reading Heather Morris’ next book, Cilka’s Journey, which comes out next month! ⠀ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #bookreview #historicalfiction #thetattooistofauschwitz

Because historical fiction is my favorite genre, I’d like to use #tbt’s on this account to “throw it back” to different times in history. This week, I’m featuring The Girl You Left Behind. 🖼 Read this if... * You’ve ever felt connected to a piece of art (other than its eyes following you across the room). * An enemy has ever made you reconsider your beliefs. * Like me, you’re fascinated by art restitution connected to the World Wars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I discovered that Jojo Moyes wrote historical fiction in addition to contemporary novels, I immediately wanted to get my hands on TGYLB. Since studying abroad in Vienna and learning about the Woman in Gold art restitution case (which was adapted into a brilliant movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren), I have found art restitution connected to WWII to be a moving, noble, and captivating concept. Thus, learning more about the subject related to WWI was a treat, as I know considerably less about the Great War. Reading about Sophie’s fraught existence during her French town’s German occupation gave me a new perspective on how living with the enemy can affect one’s truest beliefs, and Liv’s modern day struggles with grief and romance helped put a contemporary spin on the book’s overall themes. I truly wasn’t sure how this one was going to end...and I loved it! If anyone has another WWI recommendation, I’d love to explore this time in history more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #RxReads

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . Home from work today for plumbers and inspectors to come by to get one more house project completed. Major trench in the yard should be closed up this afternoon 🙌🏼 . So I decided to take this time to rave about this incredible story. We Were the Lucky Ones is based on the true story of Georgia Hunter’s family. This book completely enraptured me. The family was scattered all over the world during WWII and each person’s story is harrowing is different ways. If you’re a WWII historical fiction fan and haven’t read this yet, go get it right now!! I read it two years ago and it still sticks with me (hence, 5 stars!) I remember the day I sat on the couch for hours to finish it. We had just moved into our first house and had tons of unpacking to do but I HAD to read. That is so rare for me when the to-do list is long! . Have you read We Were the Lucky Ones? How often do you DNF books? 🌺 Good morning! I hope you're all enjoying your Thursday. Tomorrow is a teacher work day, so it's like me and my kids' Friday, even though it's not technically Friday for me, either. It's weird, okay? My brain is all over the place with that logic. I'm just looking forward to being able to spend a night not worrying about when I have to go to bed and sleeping in the next morning. 🌺 So, I don't often DNF books. I think the first and last one that I did was over vacation and I'd even tried it as an audiobook to see if that would help. My current read, while it sound fascinating, is also taking its sweet time with describing things and I'm just... UGH. Part of me wants to just push through to see if it picks up, because I'm barely at 30 pages, and the other part of me just wants to put it down and pick up something else, maybe to come back to it later. I just. Don't. Know. But it's quickly putting me into a reading slump, and even though I'm ahead of schedule with my reading challenge, we can't be having no slump. 🌺 4 Days Until Autumn! 🌺 #bookstagram #bibliophile #TheEnglishWife #author #LaurenWillig #historicalfiction #aesthetic #bookgirl #book #bookobsessed #bookcommunity #booktography #bookphotography #beautifulbooks #bookofthemonth #botmclub #bookishmerch #becauseofreading

Happy Thursday book friend! I’m sharing a historical fiction that was set in the glamorous hotel Ritz in Paris. In 1923, Blanche arrives from America to the hotel Ritz where Claude, an assistant manager there, falls head over heels in love with her. Blanche is an actress and is waiting for her boyfriend to arrive to Paris. This man has promised to make her a star. Claude shows her the sights around Paris and is persistent with making her fall for him. Eventually she does and they marry immediately only to find out they aren’t really suited well for each other. In 1940, Blanche and Claude return to the Ritz where Claude will now be director of the hotel Ritz while being occupied by Nazis, Coco Chanel, and other aristocrats. Blanche suspects Claude is cheating on her. She seeks comfort from a friend who is in the resistance. Blanche find herself helping out in anyway she can while resenting her husband for just making life seem sheltered, glamorous, and normal for everyone living at the Ritz. This book was based on true events and this is when I find historical fiction novels even more appealing. This novel had a complex love story, scheming in the French resistance, and touches of celebrities who stayed at the Ritz. I recommend this novel to everyone who enjoys World War II historical fiction. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5. #book #booklover #booklove #booknerd #bookworm #bookish #bookishlife #read #reader #reading #readingislife #readstagram #currentlyreading #ilovebooks #ilovereading #idratherbereading #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #igbooks #alwaysreading #instaread #bookaholic #instabook #coffeeandbooks #morningreading #whatiread #historicalfiction #momswhoread #librarybook

Book Mail! It seems like I’m the last person to get my BOTM box. It’s basically almost time to make next months selections. Haha. Anyway, I was actually going to skip this month but then I found a book that caught my attention and then it snowballed... . 1- This Tender Land- The synopsis really caught my attention on this book. I have been pleasantly surprised at all the amazing reviews I’ve seen people post about it. Historical Fiction, Great Depression, four orphans, a Native American School. . 2- Frankly in Love- I think we have all seen this book around and saw it in our feed for its release date. Haha. This was an add on to my box and the reason it took a long time to get to me. I’m bummed it doesn’t have the sprayed edges but I’ll deal. . . Anyway, SoCal is finally having cooler weather in the morning so it makes it harder to get up up early. . 💭Are any of these in your TBR? Have you read them? b o o k r e v i e w⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am not sure what to say about this book. Even before release, there was SO much hype surrounding it. I know BoTM selected it and everyone has been talking about it. But it took me a while to even figure out what to write in this review.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This book checked so many boxes for me. Historical fiction. A great story. Brilliant writing. But I felt like something was missing. This book feels like a modern classic-- think Huckleberry Finn. There are lines and sections that you may find yourself underlining (or taking a picture of the page with your phone if you are like me 😂)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am not sure what was lacking from this book, but I think it was the emotional punch I have come to expect with many historical fiction novels. Especially books set in this period and with this subject matter. Maybe this is because of the comparison to Before We Were Yours which was one of my favorite books last year and completely broke me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So did I like this book? Absolutely. Was it my favorite book of the year or even top 10? Probably not. Am I glad I read it? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This book is definitely more about the journey than the ending in my opinion.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t skip over the author’s note at the end. This is becoming a favorite section for me to read, especially with historical fiction.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Overall, I did enjoy this book it just wasn’t what I expected. I will definitely be picking up Ordinary Grace.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you @AtriaBooks for this gifted finished copy. #partner⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you read this one? BOOK REVIEW: The Giver Of Stars by Jojo Moyes 3 stars I am a big lover of Jojo Moyes and so when I saw she was bringing out a new book I was super excited but sadly after reading it, I feel bit let down. Firstly let me tell you about the book. It is based in Depression-era America and is based on a true story. It is NOT a romance but a historical fiction that holds some big triggers including domestic abuse and violence toward humans and animals. Our leading lady is Alice, English and bored of her life - she meets an American and marries him and moves to a small town in Kentucky. Life doesn't turn out the way she hoped but she finds herself joining a new library scheme run by Margery, a feminist before her time who takes no nonsense from men (or anyone!). Margery runs the scheme and Alice quickly signs up. The story follows her on her daily travels to different houses and the people she meets along the way. I liked many of the female characters, I thought they were unique and interesting and loved seeing how they worked together when each of them were so different. I liked seeing Alice grow through the book and the feminist aspect was also wonderful. Despite all this, the story fell flat for me. I felt too long was spent building up the story and then the ending felt incredibly rushed. Sadly at times I felt rather bored and even considered DNFing at 25%. I am glad I continued as it did pick up a bit and I dod like many parts. I seem to be in the minority for this review and I guess it is personal opinion but it was way too slow paced for me. Trigger warning: There is one scene of domestic abuse that had me shocked and feeling physically sick. If you struggle with these issues, I would not read this book. Thank you to @netgalley @penguinukbooks for providing this e-book in exchange for an honest review. #penguinukbooks #penguinuk #jojomoyes #thegiverofstars #mebeforeyou #historicalfiction #fiction #fictionismyaddiction #book #books #bookworm #bookreview #bookreviewer #ukbookstagram #ukbookreviewer #ukbookstagrammer #ukreader #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #lovebooks #gifted #ilovetoread #booksbooksbooks #booklover #ilovebooks

Yesterday I got a tiny start on this big guy. I'm on an England kick right now. I find myself frequently reading a book set in a place, then reading a couple more set in that place. So why not cover the entirety of Salisbury history at once? I had been thinking about how to attack reading some British lit in chronological order. Maybe this will give me a better idea of where to start. I've had this on my shelves for who-only-knows how long! I devoured two of his others over a decade ago (London and Ruska). I'm way ahead on my Goodreads challenge (probably because I've read a lot of middle-grades fiction this year), so I should be able to get this finished, and then some. Now, I'm ready to settle in for a bit with my favorite latte on a rainy morning. #sarum #edwardrutherfurd #whatimreading #bookstagram #historicalfiction #historicalsaga #litaboutbrits #honeyalmondlatte #porchlightcoffee

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah Review: 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 Did I mentioned my book club LOVES war books? And this one is definitely on top of our list. Go back in time to 1939 in France, a small village of Carriveau where Vianne says goodbye to her husband as he heads to the Front to fight the Nazis. When the Nazis eventually invade France and this small village, Vianne is forced to take in the enemy into her house, putting her life and her daughter's life at risk. Slowly running out of food and money, the situation gets worse before better. Vianne's younger sister, Isabelle, is your typical rebellious eighteen-year-old searching for her purpose in life. She meets a handsome young man, Gäetan, a partisan who is passionate about fighting the Nazis. Isabelle falls in love with him, only to be betrayed by him, which leads her to join the Resistance to continue saving others. Kristin Hannah captures the other story of WWII: the women's war. For the women who struggled at home and those who risked their lives fighting back. A heartbreaking story of courage and grace you get lost in Vianne and Isabelle’s story praying for a happy ending. Have you read this book? If not, did it make your wishlist? . . . #thenightingale #kristinhannah #bookstagram #historicalfiction #wwii #tearjerker #bookchat #goodreads #igreads #bookreview

DAY 19: Book I'd Always Recommend #InspiredBookChallenge 📖 My go-to book recommendation is always "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers. This has been a long time favorite and I know many will agree. 📖 Such and incredible example of how God loves and pursues us despite how angry we are, how hurt we, how damaged we are, and how we run from Him. He's always there to love us, accept us, and to draw us back to Himself. 📖 I've just convinced myself to read it again! Do you have that ONE book you'd always recommend? Be sure to share it with today's prompt and the hashtag above. #bookrecommendation #booklove #historicalfiction #redemption #book #booksofinsta #bookstagram #bookworm #novel #fiction #mustread #readthisbook

Speaking of...throwback Thursday. ⠀ .⠀ I feel like this week is going by really fast but also super slow? Anyone else? I’ve honestly just got way to much to do, so little time to do it, and no motivation to get it done. Lol. My reading has been off this week because of a few reasons so I’m showcasing a book I read a few years ago that I really enjoyed. ⠀ .⠀ The Perfume Collector won the Goodreads Award for best Historical Fiction back in 2013 so this is definitely not a new book. It’s a brilliantly written book about the expectations of women in the 1900’s. I loved the way Tessaro weaves scents and muses into the novel. And while there is a bit of a mystery involved the story is more about family then anything else. I gave it 5 ⭐️s. ⠀ .⠀ Synopsis: ⠀ Newlywed Grace Monroe doesn’t fit anyone’s expectations of a successful 1950s London socialite, least of all her own. When she receives an unexpected inheritance from a complete stranger, Madame Eva d’Orsey, Grace is drawn to uncover the identity of her mysterious benefactor.⠀ ⠀ Weaving through the decades, from 1920s New York to Monte Carlo, Paris, and London, the story Grace uncovers is that of an extraordinary women who inspired one of Paris’s greatest perfumers. Immortalized in three evocative perfumes, Eva d’Orsey’s history will transform Grace’s life forever, forcing her to choose between the woman she is expected to be and the person she really is.⠀ .⠀ What are some of your favorite books from past years? Anybody remember what they read in 2013?? ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #speakingofbooks #speakingoftbt #speakingofblog #speakingof #theperfumecollector #goodreads #goodreadsawardwinner #2013historicalfiction #historicalfiction #books #booklover #tbt #throwbackthursday #oldreads #kathleentessaro #harperbooks

📖Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . . OH my poor heart. I knew within the first 50 pages that I was going to absolutely love this story. While it's not my usual type of read, this one vastly reminded me of Where the Red Fern Grows (my favorite book ever) in the vein of country, history, the hard work of a child and seeing them through their toughest times. But unlike WTRFG, this one spans Kya's entire life time and just WOW. When a member of my bookclub suggested this for our read this month I was DELIGHTED. In discussions with people who had already read this book, I found that some readers didn't like the cadence/speech and found it jarring. I personally enjoyed it and didn't think it was too much - it lent a feeling of more authenticity to my experience. The base of the novel, in the prejudicing, not only with race during this time period, but with just someone different, is something that unfortunately will resonate with any era. Why is it that we are so afraid of what we don't know? I found the pacing of this read to be beautiful and well done. Not a word wasted and while I could've done without the poems - at the end, I found that they were necessary as well. The last couple of chapters I read with a chill through my skin and my hand placed over my heart. It has probably been since I was a child with my favorite book that I felt so connected - or so emotional. What else can I say really? If you haven't read this book, I implore you to do so. And please, marry the Tates of this world and forget the Chase. *wink* . . This @bookartbookmarks & @sewhappystitchhappy complement this perfect. It’s a sick day for me today, I have a pretty nasty cold, I had therapy this morning, and I start a new round of meds to hopefully help my mental health today. So I’m taking it easy. I’ve got Lovely War with me which is @foxandflowerreads pick for this month. This seems like a mix of historical fiction mixed with the Greek Gods mixed with a love story and I feel like it’s exactly the kind of vibes I need to get through the day. . I’m also looking forward to surprising my kiddo and picking them up right after school. Until then though, I’m gonna read, nap, and enjoy this restful and peaceful day.

It’s rainy here and all I want to do is curl up with a book! . Thank you so much to @amazonpublishing for sending me this beautiful historical fiction, How Fires End by Marco Rafalà! Synopsis: A dark secret born out of World War II lies at the heart of a Sicilian American family in this emotional and sweeping saga of guilt, revenge, and, ultimately, redemption. . After soldiers vacate the Sicilian hillside town of Melilli in the summer of 1943, the locals celebrate, giving thanks to their patron saint, Sebastian. Amid the revelry, all it takes is one fateful moment for the destiny of nine-year-old Salvatore Vassallo to change forever. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars Such great style which immerses the reader into 18th century London. The use of beautiful and antiquated words brings the feel of the time and fleshes out the characters and the setting. The Mermaid was in the beginning the catalyst for transaction, from business and trade to lust and debauchery. The Mermaid becomes a metaphor for overambition, discontent and disillusion. It shows that although there is beauty in dreams and imagination, the reality may have the ugliness of envy, greed and excess. #recentlyread #themermaidandmrshancock #imogenhermesgowar #fiction #historicalfiction #london #18thc #mermaid #book #ebook #bookboundanne #booklover #bibliophile

Good morning! ⠀ Do you enjoy historical fiction? What are some of your favorites!? ⠀ I have around 100 pages left to #CapturingtheDevil and plan to finish with the audiobook today! I am absolutely glued to this story right now. Who doesn’t need more Thomas Cresswell in their life?! ⠀ I’ve always enjoyed the liberties Kerri has taken with this story in order to bring specific historical events a little closer together so Audrey Rose and Thomas can experience them themselves. Plus, I’ve always been intrigued by the life of H.H. Holmes - this book is like candy for my history fascinated brain. ⠀ Anyway, just wanted to say that I’m loving this and am ready for our two favorite forensics students to have their happy ending! ⠀ And speaking of happy endings, you can get this Audrey Rose & Thomas OTP candle (and more) from @burningbrightcandleco. Outlander fans, do I finish this book or not? What are your thoughts? I've been slogging through the monstrosity that is book 5. I'm tired of hearing about Brianna and Jamie's red hair glowing copper in the sunlight, and it feels like writing for the sake of writing. Sex scenes for the sake of sex scenes. I've even wondered if some minor events take place just for the purpose of including an obscure word! There's no doubt Diana Gabaldon is an incredible writer and I'm consistently gobsmacked at the detail, but I'm struggling. I'm ONLY on page 699. Just another 700 to go. Have you made it out the other side, and if so what are your thoughts? Keep going and honour the passionate commitment I made after book 1, or as much as I hate to say it, do I ditch it and move on with life? #bookish #booksbooksbooks #booklover #bookworm #goodreads #readersofinstagram #jamieandclaire #outlanderbookseries #bookcommunity #bookishlife #historicalfiction #fantasyreads

“For all the Cypriot heat, it was a relief to finally be away from the grey stucco and brickwork of Dublin. I didn’t miss much about the old town. Beggars flung crumbs at the seagulls like feed, before shuffling off to drink the last few bob they had in the early-houses. Roadsweepers hauled refuse-laden carts down the sidestreets; steam and coal dust choked the air around Britain Quay where the ships offloaded. On the Liffey, Guinness barges chugged to and from the brewery; slimy green strips of algae smeared the quay walls at low tide. Every second building seemed marked for demolition; the knock-down gang swarmed over them with shovels and pickaxes. On O’ Connell Street, Nelson’s statue gazed skyward from its column; a year after I got back from Cyprus, it’d be blown to kingdom come.” - from my short story, “At the Green Border”. #dublin #dublinireland #olddublin #nelsonspillar #oconnellstreet #oconnellstreetdublin #oconnellstreetbridge #citycentre #shortfiction #shortfictionstory #prose #prosefiction #historical #historicalfiction

If so, this Canadian is pretty thrilled @jodyhedlund #areluctantbride Living in London's poorest slum, Mercy Wilkins has little hope of a better life. When she's offered an opportunity to join a bride ship sailing to British Columbia, she agrees. After witnessing so much painful heartache and loss in the slums, the bride ship is her only prospect to escape a bleak future, not only for herself but, she hopes, someday for her sister. Wealthy and titled Joseph Colville leaves home and takes to the sea in order to escape the pain of losing his family. As ship's surgeon, he's in charge of the passengers' welfare aboard the Tynemouth, including sixty brides-to-be. He has no immediate intention of settling down, but when Mercy becomes his assistant, the two must fight against a forbidden love. My #bookrecommendation for the week: Paris 7 a.m. by Liza Wieland. What a gorgeous novel. The story, set in 1937, follows the young Elizabeth Bishop on a summer visit to Paris with her college roommates. I felt Elizabeth's voice throughout - not only her coming into herself as a young woman and the daughter of a woman with mental illness, but also the fits and starts in finding her language and voice as a poet. The writing is so intimate and evocative. I read this book at the beginning of the summer, and it still sticks with me. . . . #paris7am #lizawieland #bookrecommend #whatimreading #booklove #bookstagram #womensfiction #elizabethbishop #elizabethbishoppoet #historicalfiction #greatbook

♥*♡∞:。.。🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆。.。:∞♡*♥ • The Bride of Ivy Green was everything I wanted to celebrate my anniversary. As I said before, this is the third and final book in the Tales from Ivy Hill series. You can read it as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the books in order. There are a lot of characters and knowing their backstories is helpful to follow what’s going on in this book. I was happy to find out whether or not Jane, The Bell’s owner and inkeeper, and Gabriel, owner of a horse farm, would get married. They love each other, but Jane can’t carry a child to term and doesn’t want Gabriel to feel deprived of children. This never mattered to Gabriel. Jane is perfect in his eyes. Then we have one of my favorite characters, Mercy Grove. She ran a free school from her home, Ivy Cottage, before her brother George married Helena and inherited the house. Mercy had to close down her beloved school to welcome her brother and his new bride home after their honeymoon. I HATED Helena. She was a snooty uptight priss who wasted no time making Mercy and her elderly aunt (who lived with Mercy in Ivy Cottage) feel unwelcome. I was appalled that no one said anything about her behavior. I get this was a time where people didn’t interfere in married couples lives, but she was beyond rude. Anyways, Mercy is offered a governess position by James Drake who is the father of Mercy’s favorite pupil. Should she take it and live as the spinster everyone sees her as or should she hold on to the hope that Joseph Kingsley, The Fairmont Hotel carpenter, finally notices her? These are just a few of the small town love triangles that happen in Ivy Hill. Not to mention the mysterious new dressmaker who isn’t exactly who she says she is. Oh my! (Continued in comments)
