This has come up a lot with my clients in regard to the pandemic because there is SO much uncertainty! . I’ve had clients ask: “Should I accept that I may die?” My answer is “Yes, we accept that as a possibility every day of our lives but we don’t need to stay stuck in it.” . Accepting uncertainty is difficult for people because it means opening ourselves up to less than ideal possibilities. However, the possibilities are always there whether we like them or not. We accept uncertainty and live anyways. . Accepting uncertainty may lead to you catastrophizing. Ex. “There is a chance I could die from the virus and I’m going to!!” Yes, there is always a chance that we could die but we need to look at what is happening right now. We need to live in reality as it IS now instead of living in the what IF. . Mindfulness is key here 🔑 We can accept that death is a possibility and stay in the present moment. Accepting that you could die does not mean envisioning yourself on a ventilator all day. It means accepting that it’s a possibility and living life in the now. . We can be uncertain and mindful at the same time. Look out for catastrophizing and work on bringing yourself back to the what is. . And yes, sometimes the what IS is really painful. I am sending so much love to all of you 🖤 . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureocd #hocd #rocd #harmocd #pocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #coronavirus #pandemic #acceptance #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalhealthmatters #suicideprevention #intrusivethoughts #depression #mindfulness #meditation #uncertainty #losangeles #eatingdisorderrecovery #anorexianervosarecovery #bdd #bfrb #therapy #therapist #therapistsofinstagram #cbt #youarenotalone

💜Your friendly reminder: The goal of anxiety/OCD treatment isn’t to eliminate anxiety. I wish. But that would be unrealistic. This could be said for any other feeling as well. Anxiety, sadness, general discomfort.⠀ .⠀ When we talk about accepting feelings, we are not encouraging people to live in their feelings or to allow their feelings to run their lives. Instead, the idea is to allow them to be present and to see them for what they are - a bunch of physical sensations.⠀ .⠀ You don't need to share all of your feelings. You can have them without taking action based on them. Accepting feelings is somewhere between pushing them away and sulking in them or being overrun by them. ⠀ .⠀ #mindful #MindfulMFT #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #bemindful #presentmoment #mindfulnessmeditation #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthproblems #stigmafree #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #pureo #hocd #harmocd #rocd #pocd #ppocd #anxietydisorders #helpforanxiety #generalizedanxietydisorder #socialanxietydisorder #healthanxiety #agoraphobia #emetophobia #claustrophobia #phobias #panicdisorder #panicattack #bdd #anxietyrecovery

Let's do a coping skills exchange! If you have some favorite coping skills share in the comments below. 💛⠀ .⠀ When we hear coping skills, we often think of therapeutic techniques, like meditation. Maybe we even think of exercise, as its benefits span both physical and emotional well-being. Less frequently, we consider things that are of a more "frivolous" nature. These are important too. Humor and entertainment help to sustain us. ⠀ .⠀ True story - I watched Tiger King on Netflix last week, and it was a fabulous way of decompressing and connecting with my partner (if you've seen the show you can probably understand how passive television might become an interactive event🐯🐅🤯). These things are just as important as meditating and exercising. ⠀ .⠀ However you're coping, I hope you're being kind to yourself. ⠀ .⠀ #ocd #pureocd #hocd #rocd #harmocd #pocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #intrusivethoughts #mindfulness #eatingdisorderrecovery #losangeles #OrangeCounty #therapy #therapist #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #cbt #erp #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthadvocate #ocdtherapy #perinatalmentalhealth #depressed #anxious #bdd #bfrb #anxietydisorders

Inside each of us exists an inner pillar of grounded innate inner wisdom. In IFS we call this Self Energy. When in Self, we are leading life as our inner adult. When we show up as the adult in our system, we can remain calm, confident, compassionate and courageous. This is the perfect antidote for the anxious mind. The following are exercises and practices which we can cultivate to bring our highest adult self forward: . ✅Connecting with your body and emotions through movement ✅Working with your dreams: Creating a dream journal ✅Prayer: Asking for help or assistance from something greater than you (not necessarily religious) ✅Loving-kindness meditations and Gratitude practices . Do you have a regular practice that you find helpful? . Let me know in the comments! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #relationshipocd #relationshipobsessivecompulsive #relationshipanxiety #anxiety #mentalhealth #ocd #obsessivecompulsive #rocd #love #couples #intimacy #attachmentstyles #relationshipobsessivecompulsivedisorder #marriage #engagement #hocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #pocd #hocd #healthanxiety #postpartumanxiety #anxietyreducer #anxietycure #generalizedanxietydisorder #ocdawareness #ocdmemes #ocdrecovery #intrusivethoughts #anxietyattacks

Yes, we can! If you are struggling to hold your head up, first of all, you are definitely not alone. - But here is the thing. You are doing this. You are getting through. Is it hard? Heck, yes But, nonetheless, you are getting through this and for that, you deserve a massive high-five. - In today's podcast we are talking all about DOING HARD THINGS and why I keep yammering on and one about this phrase. - I break down why it is important to remind yourself how hard it is and how capable you are of doing hard things. - Do you feel capable? Maybe? Maybe not... But you know what? It really doesn't matter if you FEEL capable or not. What matters is that you ARE capable. Go ahead and argue with me. I really don't mind. You will not change my mind. You are strong. You are capable. And you can do hard things. - Head on over to Your Anxiety Toolkit if you need a pep talk. Its there ready for you. - Quick question before we sign off.....Out of 10, with 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest, how capable do you feel? Sitting inside all day is not an easy feat for many people. This time period cannot be chalked up to “sitting on a couch” because it’s so much more than that. . Sitting inside all day is really difficult for those managing mental health symptoms like OCD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. who need support (human connection, time outdoors in nature, exercise). It’s difficult to sit inside all day when your brain is on fire. . Sitting inside all day is difficult for people struggling to pay bills who have lost jobs. . It’s difficult for people living in really small spaces without another human being. I’ve seen a few celebrities (like @hilaryduff and @jenatkinhair) post this and while I have no idea what they’re going through, I imagine that sitting inside a huge home in Los Angeles with a yard/pool may feel different than sitting inside of a studio apartment with no space to move around. . It’s difficult for people who live in toxic and abusive environment. . Sitting on a couch is difficult, period. While I understand the attempt made by people posting the “called to war” quote, I think it is tone deaf and not that simple. . If sitting on a couch all day is relaxing for you, that likely comes from a place of privilege. . If you’re struggling to sit inside all day, I see you. I am with you. Your feelings are valid 🖤 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureocd #hocd #rocd #harmocd #pocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #coronavirus #privilege #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #stigma #suicideprevention #losangeles #mentalillness #bdd #eatingdisorderrecovery #mindfulness #therapy #therapist #youarenotalone #depression #anxiety #anxious #ppd #postpartum #perinatalmentalhealth

I cannot stress this enough 📣 . You are not your disorder. You are a human being suffering like every other human being. Pain is universal. . Your disorder does not make you damaged. It makes you human. . Your diagnosis is not a barometer of your worth. You are experiencing symptoms that are not good or bad. They just are symptoms. . Your disorder does not define you. Reposting this because some of you have been asking about the differences between GAD and OCD 👇🏼 . Those with GAD and OCD have unwanted thoughts that cause anxiety and are difficult to set aside. There is excessive worrying associated with both disorders. There is also difficulty tolerating uncertainty, along with worst case scenario thinking. . However, the biggest difference between the two disorders has to do with the content of the thoughts. Additionally, those with OCD perform a variety of compulsions (both physical and mental) whereas those with GAD primarily worry excessively as the behavioral response to the thoughts. Keep in mind, it’s not always clear-cut. . The unwanted thoughts of GAD are about common, real-life concerns (ex. failing a test at school or being late on rent). They’re about regular life stressors that a lot of people worry about, but the worrying is excessive and interferes with functioning with GAD. . With OCD, the unwanted thoughts are intrusive and highly distressing. They are not based on common, real-life concerns. Obsessions are highly irrational and unrealistic (Ex. A mom who absolutely loves her newborn has unwanted thoughts about harming the baby. She then avoids any contact with the baby to prevent something bad from happening). . Obsessions are often magical in nature (Ex. If I have a thought about this while I am eating, something bad will happen). The obsessions are based on little to no evidence and are ego-dystonic: opposite to a person’s beliefs and values. . The content of OCD obsessions varies and often involves “taboo” themes: pedophile fears, relationship fears like does my partner actually love me, existential fears, harm fears, contamination fears, etc. . This is actually me 😂 This quarantine has been very hard in regards to my anxiety and depression. One of my obsessions is that life isn’t real, it’s all just an illusion made up in our brains. Because of the quarantine this is making this thought feel VERY real. It feels like my life isn’t real. I feel as if I’ve been placed in some kind of fake world or a movie reliving the same day everyday and it is causing me SO much panic, I’m anxious all the time and can not stop thinking about this every second and asking myself “where am I?” Also, I was waiting this show called “unorthodox” on Netflix and I was having sexual intrusive thoughts. They’ve been popping up randomly while I’m scrolling on insta or watching movies or tv shows, which is bothersome. This might be tmi but idk why I get these thoughts on any gender or age. I’m asexual, and don’t even put in tampons bc I’m too grossed out even if my own body. Depression wise, I’ve been really sad and just feel like bursting into tears, and very agitated. I feel like all I do is annoy my family. I either talk about myself all the time, problems I’m having or issues with my mental health. I’m very annoying, but idk why I can’t stop talking about myself. Also I always feel the need to tell my mom every thought I have, which are usually intrusive thoughts, so she thinks I’m doing it for attention or trying to threaten her. I told her that all I do is bother her, cause her stress and problems and she would be better off without me but she was going to send me to the hospital. I feel like my family hates me and I have nothing to live for. It’s such a bad feeling. If u guys have made it this far, thanks! Is there anything you guys are doing to pass the time? I could really use some suggestions!

There are no “shoulds” with feelings. There is no way that you “should” be feeling right now. . You are allowed to feel pain; no ifs, ands or buts. You are allowed to feel pain. Period. . We are grieving right now. We are grieving not only the loss of others, but the loss of the life we knew. We are grieving weddings, graduations, funerals, college semesters, and so much more. . Someone else having it worse off does not mean that your pain is invalid. Someone else having it worse off does not take your pain away. . You can be sad about not walking in your graduation AND be sad about the loss of lives. You can be sad about your cancelled wedding AND be sad about this pandemic. . This is where the both/and comes into play. . We have to feel to heal. If we are shoving our feelings down because we think others have it worse and that we “should” be grateful, those feelings will come back up even stronger. . Feel your feelings. Let yourself grieve. Cry. Feel the anger and the sadness and the longing. Let your heart break and let it heal. You are worthy and your pain is valid 🖤 . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureo #pureocd #hocd #rocd #pocd #harmocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #therapy #therapist #trauma #erp #cbt #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #losangeles #bdd #bfrb #grief #griefquotes #coronavirus #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalillness #stigma #eatingdisorderrecovery #recovery #healing

💜I am often asked how to share your OCD or intrusive thoughts with loved ones. First, it is your choice if you want to. Second, you are not required to share specific details and all of the themes. How I like to explain it: ‘My thoughts are attacking the things I love and value the most, like you.’ This would be a good example for harming OCD, in which your intrusive thoughts are about a person you love. This allows you to explain the general nature of OCD, that your thoughts cause you distress by attacking the things you value, without describing every specific thought. You are more than welcome to share more though if you want!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ #ocd #ocdlife #ocdhelp #ocdrelief #ocdrecovery #ocdproblems #ocdtips #ocdadvocate #ocdawareness #ocdsupport #ocdclean #livingwithocd #erp #exposureresponseprevention #exposuretherapy #intrusivethoughts #pureocd #pocd #hocd #harmocd #rocd #realocd #uncertainty #thoughtsarejustthoughts #scrupulosityocd #religiousocd #ocdisnotanadjective

Posted @withregram@obsessivelyeverafter Do you ever feel like intrusive thoughts “contaminate” places, people, situations, events, etc? Do you feel like having thoughts ruins moments of your life? . This is very common with OCD and often gets in the way of us moving towards things we value. Maybe you avoid people because we don’t want thoughts about them. Maybe you avoid having sex because you are afraid the thoughts will ruin the moment. Maybe you avoid yoga because it involves sitting in silence with our thoughts. . This avoidance and resistance of thoughts stems from the idea that the thoughts are bad, that they mean something horrible about us, that they mean danger is present. . This happens when we fuse with thoughts and see them as facts instead of meaningless pop-ins. This happens when we attach meaning to the thoughts and get stuck in the content. . This is where acceptance comes into play! It’s difficult, and it took practice in my own recovery to get to this place, but welcoming the presence of thoughts at your graduation/wedding/child’s birthday party is a GAME-CHANGER! . Your thoughts (yes, those string of words in your head) will be there whether you like it or not. When you don’t fight them, they don’t fight you. . The presence of thoughts does not mean that your day is ruined. It quite simply means you have a brain that is working (probably on overdrive). . Intrusive thoughts and good times can coexist, I promise you that ❤️ . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureocd #hocd #rocd #harmocd #hocd #rocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #intrusivethoughts #pocd #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #losangeles #therapy #therapist #mindfulness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthquotes #ocdhelp #postpartum #perinatalmentalhealth #ppd #depression #depressed #anxious #anxiety #bdd #bfrb #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #therapistsofinstagram

💜While death is certain, the details surrounding death are not. When will we die? How will we die? What happens in the afterlife? Life just feels very.. unbelievable right now. I haven’t left my home in almost 2 weeks and everything is so.. different, changing so rapidly. Derealization and depersonalization are hitting pretty hard for me & exposures look like watching TV shows (🥴) that I would normally be uncomfortable with (like love is blind) & honestly, I did really well watching love is blind. It wasn’t as triggering as I thought it would be and I handled it well and actually enjoyed it at times 😂 Tonight I watched the first two episodes of Tiger King.. anyone else? This show is crazy! pc: @livia.falcaru

Sexual Orientation OCD involves fear thoughts about whether you are "truly" the sexual orientation with which you identify. ⠀ .⠀ So someone who identifies as gay might worry that they're "truly" bisexual, or someone who identifies as straight might worry that they're actually gay. The orientation of the sufferer and the orientation they are concerned they might actually be are irrelevant.⠀ .⠀ This type of OCD may involve intrusive images of a graphic sexual nature. It often involves thoughts about being in "denial." ⠀ .⠀ And just as with any other form of OCD, compulsions are done in response to the thoughts and feelings that begin the cycle. People with Sexual Orientation OCD often ruminate about whether or not they are "really" gay/straight/bisexual, trying to figure out their orientation with absolute certainty. People might ask for reassurance about what others think or feel. Many do this to make sure that having thoughts about a person of a gender they're not typically attracted doesn't necessitate a change in identity. ⠀ .⠀ Avoidance is also quite common. People will avoid certain areas of town with high concentrations of a certain orientation. It is important to be clear that most people with Sexual Orientation OCD are open-minded individuals. Whatever you are feeling is valid ✨ There is no right way to feel. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. . If you’re not feeling grateful or like there is a silver lining in this unprecedented time, that is welcome. . Maybe you, like many, have lost their jobs and don’t feel lucky to have a “reset.” Maybe you feel angry. Anger is welcome. . Maybe you’re sad because you had to cancel a wedding or a funeral. Your grief is welcome. . Maybe you’re an anxious and depressed because sitting inside all day isn’t great for your mental health. Anxiety and depression are welcome. . Maybe you’re really freaking happy! That’s welcome too. Your happiness doesn’t mean that you don’t care about the world. . There are a lot of “find gratitude” and “silver linings” posts right now. While that is lovely for some, you don’t need to find a silver lining if there is not one for you. . You get to be exactly where you are, feeling exactly what you feel. . Today, I woke up really happy because my best friend is engaged 💙 My heart and soul feel happy today. Yesterday, I was angry, sad, and tired. All of that is welcome! . Feelings are transitory when we accept their presence without judgment. . Everyone has intrusive unwanted distressing thoughts. . Those with OCD believe these thoughts are true or important by over-attending them which then causes over-valuing/ importance, cause a person to over-respond (ie., compulsive behavior) to neutralize them. . The importance one places on these thoughts are the very reason they become fused with believing they must be facts and/or a reflection of their own identity. . In my clinical experience, the more taboo obsession, the more over-identifying with the thoughts become with ones character flaw. This misconception that we can actually control the content of our thoughts. . They are more fused with the idea that other people don't have these thoughts and they certainly do not have them this intensely or frequently. However, doesn't it make sense that the more upsetting a thought is, the more polar they are from your own values and identity, the more your mind will have a strong aversion to them, that the compulsions might increase due to the fact that you actually value this part of your identity as being opposing. I have listed a few common examples I have seen in my office: . - I have thoughts about harming my child, this must mean I am a bad person or a murder - No one has violent thoughts like these, this must mean I am a deviant or a psychopath, why else would they be this strong and never-ending? - I don't have the same emotional reaction I am suppose to have or how other people feel them, this means I am more likely to hurt someone because I am a psychopath. - I have a groinal response when I am around children, I am a pedophile. . Remind yourself other people have these exact thoughts as you but they do not have the genetic make-up that triggers false warning signals of danger caused by a misfire into fight or flight. . . . #cbt#erp#ACT#ocd#pureo#pureocd#hocd#harmocd#obsessivecompulsivedisorder#pocd#ocdawareness#ocdrecovery#onlinetherapist#ocdproblems#anxious#anxiety#intrusivethoughts#mindfulness#mentalhealth #ppd#postpartum#socialanxiety#compulsion#recovery#healing

Vulnerable post coming at you!!Something I have been thinking about: There is no guidebook to handle your emotions during a pandemic. Everyone’s life is affected by this pandemic to different severities. I shared an article about how the emotions during this time are like that of the stages of grief, which includes denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I really felt like I dealt with all these emotions a week or two ago (What day is it again?!) There was a moment where I feel like I didn’t handle my anger well and took it out on someone else. Basically, I blew up on something I can usually handle and let my anger fly. After that happened, I started to really hear my true emotions under the anger, which included sadness, loss of my past life, loss of control with what’s going on in the world, fear of infecting someone else or someone else dying, loss of freedom and general life uncertainty etc. I let myself meditate, journal, talk to close friends, physically care for myself, and i let myself cry the fuck out these emotions for a few days really. After really letting my negative emotions be heard, I felt I could start to focus on what I was grateful for and what I can control and I do see this time as an opportunity. - Fast forward to today. I’m thankful to have technology to connect with others and to live with my family, but I realized people are still in different stages of dealing with this. Sometimes people are not showing up as their best selves. Maybe they’re more angry or more irritable. Maybe they’re more defensive. I don’t really want to judge people (mainly because I have done those things too), but it might be helpful to let these emotions out in a personal way. Also, if someone is not acting like their best self, I am trying hard to realize that these are beyond normal circumstances and everyone is dealing with it in different ways. I am trying so hard not to take it personally. I hope this helps someone stay sane if you’re also dealing with this. When people say the content of OCD doesn’t matter, it is true! Regardless of the content, obsessions are intrusive and unwanted thoughts. The content doesn’t make them any more meaningful and all obsessions are treated the same. . On the same token, I always want to validate how incredibly difficult it feels to live with POCD (pedophile obsessions). The sufferer feels so much shame and often feels like they have nowhere to turn to because people won’t understand. Talking about a contamination concern isn’t as stigmatized as talking about unwanted sexually intrusive thoughts about children. It doesn’t mean that either are more painful in regard to living with them, but POCD sufferers often face an added layer of shame to work through. . Pedophilia is illegal (rightfully so) whereas getting sick or being in the wrong relationship is not. When someone is experiencing thoughts so against their values and who they are as a person, speaking up feels like it equates to going to jail. . I understand the shame that lives with POCD and I always want to make sure I validate that added layer ❤️ . OCD is so incredibly difficult regardless of the theme, but the theme sometimes adds increasing amounts of shame. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #pureo #pureocd #hocd #rocd #harmocd #pocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #ocdhelp #ocdtreatment #intrusivethoughts #erp #cbt #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #postpartum #ppd #perinatalmentalhealth #depression #anxious #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthadvocate #bdd #bfrb #shame #stigma

Stay home and stay healthy. I’m on quarantine day 10 and I’ve found a new “normal” which consists a lot of staying off my phone and the tv and indulging in some art projects. I’ve painted a beautiful paint by # canvas, I’ve done some cross stitching, and have made sure I’m staying hydrated with yummy drinks. As long as I stay away from the media my anxiety levels remain relatively normal. I hope you all are doing well. I haven’t been posting much as I’ve been staying off my phone. What are some quarantine activities you’ve indulged in? pc: @twentysevenlkld

Quarantine Day 2: Journal Entry . When I awoke this morning I didn’t want to get out of bed. Bed provided refuge from the vulnerability I was experiencing. Bed provided refuge from the eyes on the other side of the bedroom door where Dione awaited my arrival from dream land. It currently feels as though I am standing out in the cold, naked, with nothing to shield me, nowhere to hide. There are but a few small hiding places. A bum to grab, a post to make, a website to build. These are temporary fixes for the pain inside that longs to be seen, witnessed and comforted. Pain that I acknowledge in each of us, buried beneath the layers of avoidance, anger, addiction, perfectionism, intrusive thoughts and many more. Today I become witness to boredom. Boredom unpacked is an abhorrence and desire to avoid emotional pain. The desire to “DO” is an avoidance of the fear to “BE”. Boredom is a protective factor. It keeps exiled pain from making it to the surface of our psyches. Today I am resting inside of myself, sifting through and meeting the parts of me who are proactive and reactive in their attempts to shield me from the discomfort of sitting with old wounds. This experience is showing me what’s really important. To be with myself. To learn more about what lives inside of my unconscious mind. To free the pain that longs to be freed. Today is a day of deep reflection and inner exploration! . Lots of love, health and warmth to all of you in your spaces. May you find places within you that need attention too. May these places within you be met with compassion. ❤️

Do you ever feel like intrusive thoughts “contaminate” places, people, situations, events, etc?

I know it sounds basic. . Slow and paced breathing is usually the first thing that goes out the window during a panic attack or during a stressful situation. I often find myself holding my breath or breathing shallow. This is a sure fire way to spike anxiety. When we do this we are sending feedback to our brain that we are in flight or fight response. . It is important to notice when it happens and attempt to gently bring your breath back to your stomach at a slow and steady manner. Hyperventilating occurs when we are doing shallow breathing. rather than your chest or holding your breath. This also drops oxygen levels and . Your sympathetic nervous system fills your body with cortisol and adrenaline, which can leave you feeling intensely anxious or amped up (ie., racing heart rate, shallow breathing, dizziness, restlessness, stomach upset, etc.). Deep breathing can release all this as it activates the vagus nerve sending signals to the parasympathetic nervous system to slow heart rate, slow breathing and . . When deep breathing is practiced regularly, it even can prevent your stress response from overacting in the first place. Just like anything else we have to learn and it takes time to do this. Meditation practice is a great way to devote time to this type of breathing as you are often anchoring yourself to the breath. . Try to start practicing a few minutes every day, ideally before you have entered a non-stressful situation to gain mastery. . . #anxietyproblems#bemindful#deepbreathing#helpforanxiety#mental#mentalhealthsupport#perinatalmentalhealth#ocdrecovery#ocdlife#obsession#bellybreathe#ocdawareness#pureocd#pureo#panic#anxietysufferer#anxietyattack#anxietyhelp#anxietydisorders#bfrbs#trich#endthestigma#cbt#harmocd#hocd#mindfulness#onlinetherapist#moralscrup#ppd#breakstigma

~Tiyana Posted @withregram@obsessivelyeverafter Being at home with OCD can be tough when everyday activities that you value are triggers! . Are you into rollercoasters? How about scary movies?⠀ .⠀ They make our hearts race, our breath quick and shallow, they make us feel like our stomach is dropping - and it's a blast! ⠀ .⠀ Isn't interesting then that in another context we call excitement anxiety? What is it that leads us to detest one experience and actively seek out another?⠀ .⠀ I think this is an interesting question. It's all in the context isn't it. But if we mindfully drop the story associated with either experience, the feeling and its composite physical sensations are the same. This would suggest that, maybe, these physical sensations aren't "bad" but that our perception of them as associated with "bad" and our resistance of them makes them something that is uncomfortable. ⠀ .⠀ Can you, instead, make space for all of the emotions and their physical sensations? Can you view them with curiosity instead of labeling them as bad or good? This is the path to equanimity. ⠀ . ⠀ #mindful #MindfulMFT #mindfulnessmeditation ⠀ #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #bemindful #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthproblems #stigmafree #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #pureo #hocd #harmocd #rocd #pocd #ppocd #anxietydisorders #helpforanxiety #generalizedanxietydisorder #socialanxietydisorder #healthanxiety #agoraphobia #emetophobia #claustrophobia #phobias #panicdisorder #panicattack #bdd #anxietyrecovery

I don’t want it. I don’t like it. I don’t look forward to it. But unfortunately I get it. ☹️ The dreaded groinal syndrome!!! This is when you see, hear, think, read, imagine, etc things that produce a sensation in your groin area or any other area on your body associated with sex. It’s alarming and will really make you think ‘omg, if I’m feeling things sexually, the thoughts must be true!?!’ The groinal was singlehandedly what kept me stuck in the HOCD loop for years. I thought I could deal with the thoughts if I had to, but the groinal had to be PROOF they were real!!!!! When I got therapy and Phillipson told me the groinal movement was common in OCD, I cried I felt so relieved. Except....knowing this doesn’t make it stop! Now, I have gotten used to it, not in a way that I like it, but more in my ability to recognize the urgency that comes with it to find out ‘what it means’. Instead, I feel it through and use ERP skills to resist the buy in that it is proving something. Once I embraced the groinal being part of my symptoms, it drastically reduced the shame I experience when it happens. When I first went to treatment for OCD many moons ago I thought only one thing would make me happy: to stop having worry thoughts. . Imagine my disappointment when I learned my therapist was incapable of getting rid of my thoughts. In fact, in therapy I learned that trying to get rid of my thoughts was a big part of the problem. . The good news is that it's possible to live a full life with all of your thoughts in tow. It's possible to find joy in your life without getting rid of thoughts. But you have to be willing to stop wishing the thoughts away and learn how to have a different relationship with them in order to do that. It is so difficult to resist the urge of "figuring it out." To allow the uncomfortable thoughts in, without making attempts to stop them. . Often times, people become stuck in the idea that they can control what comes in and out of their mind, the intensity and the timing of it. Although I wish we had this ability, we do not. . Learning about mindfulness or meditation for the first time can be confusing because it feels counterintuitive. We are allowing them to come in and sometimes even welcoming them in. Thinking we can calm and stop all distressing thoughts and feelings through meditation is a common misconception. However, this couldn't be any further from the truth. In fact, meditation might become more difficult before it becomes calming because it is likely the first time you are allowing the distressing feelings and thoughts to come in without engaging in neutralizing behavior, such as mental compulsions. Being mind-FULL, means allowing your mind to open up to whatever there is without getting lost in them or consumed by them. . We cannot control our thoughts, similarly we cannot stop the waves from the ocean. Once we learn how to accept them we have learned how to surf. . . . #acceptance#accpetnaceandcommitmenttherapy#anxietydisorders#anxietyproblems#intrusivethoughts#bemindful#emotionalregualtion#helpforanxiety#mentalhealthsupport#mentalhealthadvocate#perinatalmentalhealth#ocdrecovery#ocdlife#ocdawareness#radicalacceptance#anxietysufferer#anxietytherapist#anxietyhelp#bfrbs#trich#cbt#erp#harmocd#hocd#mindfulness#moralscrup#ppd#rocd#breakstigma#onlinetherapist

People are often afraid that taking medication is the easy way out but medication is not. Medication doesn’t do the work for you. It often makes it easier to do the work but you still do the behavioral work while taking it 💊 . Those with OCD and anxiety disorders have a brain that is wired differently than the brain of people without. Taking medication often helps bring the person to a more stable place and at a more even playing field with those who don’t struggle with mental health. . Instead of looking at it as “cheating” or “taking a shortcut”, we can look at it as getting a fair shot in the race when we were born a bit behind. Our brain has cheated us 😉 . Medication is often the light that helps you get out of the forest or tunnel, but you do all of the work to get there yourself. . I know it is easier said than done, but it is possible....even if it is for a few minutes...or seconds. Small wins are still wins! - What did I miss? 🌻 Would you be surprised to know you are actually a master of uncertainty? You handle unknown situations ALL day. Let’s practice that expertise during the situations where the unknown is more difficult for you. @theshrinkwrap . . . #ocd #ocdlife #ocdhelp #ocdrelief #ocdrecovery #ocdproblems #ocdtips #ocdadvocate #ocdawareness #ocdsupport #ocdclean #livingwithocd #erp #exposureresponseprevention #exposuretherapy #intrusivethoughts #pureocd #pocd #hocd #harmocd #rocd #realocd #uncertainty #thoughtsarejustthoughts #scrupulosityocd #religiousocd #ocdisnotanadjective

I apologize for my absence online; I’ve found the media and news pretty triggering the past few days - I’m flying to Canada tomorrow (I really wish I wasn’t) so I’ve been trying to keep the panic level down. I don’t like flying anyways and with covid on top of it I just am a bit of a mess. That being said once I get to Canada I have a family wedding and might not be able to be super present on here during the week. I’ve realized I can’t promote myself as an awareness page without bringing to light the kind I’ve actually struggled with. Hocd and rocd hit me like a train a while back and uprooted every thing I thought I knew about myself. I had no clue what was going on and didn’t even know what an intrusive thought was. I’ve resisted posting about it on here as it feels really personal and there is a lot of shame and guilt (internally) (I’m not homophobic) associated with it.. (what if people try to suggest my thoughts are real? What if they’re right? How can I know for sure?) after a mis/non diagnosis (adjustment disorder?) I realized what it was (after a year of torture) and that I’d had a form of it my entire life. Now, if it weren’t for medication I’m not sure if I could function daily. My beliefs and values were striped to the core and a loss of identity was inevitable - I was still me but very hollowed out; exhausted and dead inside. I mentioned previously I couldn’t even look at faces without being triggered so isolation was common for me. I’m thankful to be in some form of recovery with treatment and medication and clarity and a support system but there’s always work to do. Things that trigger me are typically: new people, getting “too close” to someone, media (TikTok, tv, Instagram), ambiguous relationships, intrusive feelings, thoughts, urges, etc Is this something you struggle with? Let me know💛
