This can be a major contributor. 🎈The most common breathing dysfunction in the general population is a shallow breathing pattern. This happens when people use the muscles around the neck and chest to elevate the shoulders and collarbone (upper chest) to draw air into the lungs 🎈 We call these muscles accessory breathing muscles, because they can help get air in - by expanding the thoracic cavity in a different way. THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE USED TO BREATHE, and this is where the dysfunction happens. As we already know, the diaphragm is supposed to contract and draw air into the lungs from below 🎈 Shallow breathing using neck muscles (who shouldn't be doing this all day) is associated with many negative effects. Chronic neck tension is a big one, as these muscles are never really relaxed by having to breathe all day. Anxiety and stress is also a feedback loop associated with shallow breathing. Regrann from @optimize.physiotherapy - The breathing series part 1: The diaphragm 🎈The diaphragm is the single most important muscle when it comes to breathing. It is a dome shaped muscle that extends across the bottom of the thoracic cavity (as seen in the diagrams). It attaches to many structures, as the muscle spans 360 degrees on the inside of the ribcage and thoracic cavity. The muscle converges to form tendon portions which insert into the lumbar spine at L1/L2 🎈This complex and unique muscle affects a lot based on all of its attachments. For the purpose or breathing, it should contract and draw downwards towards the lumbar spine (where it attaches). By drawing down, this increases the volume of the thoracic cavity and draws air into the lungs. THIS IS HOW WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BREATHE ALL THE TIME, especially when in a resting state 🎈 The problem is that many of us are not using our diaphragms to breathe, or not using the diaphragm nearly enough. Not only does this affect breathing function (since it's the dedicated breathing muscle), but it affects things like spinal stability, core function etc 🎈 The diaphragm is a major part of the 'core', and should be providing spinal integrity and stability when working properly (based on ya attachments to the spine). Based on its location, this muscle defines the core. Having poor diaphragm function is a recipe for disaster. This is how I "sit" at the office: In fact I try not too. Sitting is one of the worst things you can do, hence the term #sittingdisease. Ankle mobility through #dorsiflexion and #plantarflexion in the #saggitalplane (as well as inversion ( #transverseplane)) help set the foundation for good movement - like a tree, from the ground up. Cranial Nerves 101 - Cranial Nerve VI - Abducens Nerve Now we're onto the sixth cranial nerve which is the Abducens Nerve. The Glute meds are widely known as the hip abductors, along with hip external rotators. … Essential in walking, the gluteus medius is the active muscle in keeping the pelvis level with every step taken. (single leg stance) . Most of us are well aware of the Glute Max and although the g-max is a very important muscle in the body, it does not need to be doing all the simple work when one is doing minimal tasks. ex. sitting, walking… . Aside from being abductors and external rotators, the glute meds can and should be in control of end range hip flexion and extension (bending over, standing up) . It’s difficult for someone to personally tell if their glute meds are working properly. You could be walking around all day with them being non existent. The body is a brilliant machine and it will get the job done one way or another. . Developing strong glute meds seems simple but is more complex than most realize. 💪 . . #pillarprinciples #flobility

A study from York University investigating the effects of obesity, as well as multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and high blood sugar on mortality rate have somewhat counter intuitive results. Bakasana or Crow Pose 🐦 My journey to this pose was a slow one. I practiced baby crow for some time as I always had visions of smashing my face in full Crow. It's surprising how scary taking away your hands as a fail safe actually is. Your mind is telling you this isn't safe this isn't safe I need to protect the brain. But truly your body is so clever that even if you do fall it will automatically protect your face by turning the head or whipping the body round so you land on your side with minimum impact. Try it. Next time test your body a little further and see if it protects you. Practice with a cushion or bolster under your face. You will be pleasantly surprised. Once you concur this fear your practice will excel. It took me years to trust my body to do the right thing if it went belly up. I still struggle now. The body is an amazing mechanism of fail safes and preventatives that will always have your best interests at heart.
