Tips for Growing burgandy okras (also see my last post for details on the plant itself).⁣ ⁣ Sowing Seeds⁣ The seeds of burgundy okra can be started indoors and transplanted out into the garden when the weather warms up. For USDA zone 8 and warmer, I recommend direct sowing them into the garden during mid-late spring or when the temperatures are consistently above 65°F. I tested with both direct sowing and seed staring indoors and found that it made no real difference. Burgandy okra is a heat loving plant and will only take off growing once the warm weather rolls in. ⁣ ⁣ Spacing⁣ This plant grows quickly and is quick to reach maturity. When planted in the right environment (10+ hours of sun and great airflow), it can get quite large. By the end of the last growing season, my okra plant surpassed 7 feet (height and width) and had a trunk size of approximately 3 inches. My father, a Caribbean gardener has recommended planting the seeds two per space in order to maximize production and minimize the use of space. I did not try it last year but I'm considering attempting that approach this year.⁣ ⁣ Harvesting ⁣ It is recommended that okra is harvested once it reaches two inches. I usually allow mine to grow to 4-5 inches. We prefer the texture and taste at that size. ⁣ About the Plant: ⁣ See my last post for details on this plant variety. #colrfallfood #colrfalltips

🥗 Burgandy okra has quickly became my favorite fruiting annual to grow (featured in my book "Garden Spy The life of Fruit"). It is an extremely hardy plant and prolific bearer that produces fruit daily when fully established. ⁣ ⁣ Fruit⁣ Unlike the more common green okra, this tasty okra has very little slime to its texture. Grown and eaten fresh from the garden, the crunchy texture is one that my family has grown to love. This tasty okra is versatile and can accompany many different flavors and varieties of dishes but my children have been most interested in eating them raw and fresh from the plant. ⁣Although the color is a beautiful deep shade of burgundy, it will turn green once cooked. ⁣ ⁣ Vegetables⁣ The leaves and flowers of this okra plant is said to be edible. My husband has tried the leaves and confirms that "it wasn't bad at all" 😊.⁣ ⁣ Beauty⁣ The green leaves streaked with burgandy veins, burgandy stems, luxurious velvet-like pods and hibiscus favored flowers add a lovely ornamental touch to our food garden. ⁣ Growing Tips See my next post for growing tips. #colrfallfood

Follow http://fb.me/Photo.Laurent.Malet for more: go, like and share ! Guess who’s coming to diner? I was lucky to find myself witnessing the capture of a grasshopper by a praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) and see it through the end of the meal it meant. It’s not for the faint at heart, but I really found this moment amazing. The mantis ate it nearly entirely, quickly and wasn’t disturbed neither by me, nor by ma camera or my flash, although it did keep its eyes on me. This was in Saint Laurent de la Salanque in the South of France. This lone leaf on a wooden railing caught my eye... the dappled sunlight and warm green bokeh in the background convey the warmth and sunshine we enjoyed this past week in FLA 🌞 . . . #everythingeyecatching #macrophotography #light #sunlight #bokeh #ipulledoverforthis #igbestmacro #macro_love #macro_creative_pictures #ig_bestmacros at Jupiter, Florida
