A few weeks ago I completed my 5th IRONMAN 70.3 in Augusta! It wasn't the day I had expected but I pushed though cramps on a hot day and learned from it. In two weeks I take on IRONMAN Florida! #becomeone #Iwill #ironmantri #ironman703augusta #imfl #im703augusta #itwashotaf #hokaoneone #zoot #floridatriathlete #quintanaroo #swimbikerun #finisherpix #guroctane #rudyproject #onemorerace
2019 Ironman 70.3 Augusta... I debated even writing up a race report which is really unlike me. But I knew I needed some time to process my thoughts on this really hard day. Now that almost three weeks have gone by I can see what went right and what didn’t. This was my third Augusta in a row, and my fifth 70.3 distance race. Every one I’ve ever done has been hot, but the anxiety over the extreme heat forecasted for race day really messed with my head. Several dry weeks in Georgia meant little to no current in the river, and although my swim felt strong and good, I was more than bummed to see 39 minutes on my watch. The bike course had changed this year, and there was a lot of deceptively tough climbing... winding 2-3% grade hills that look like nothing but they went on for several miles. It felt hard, and hot. I didn’t drink enough. And I couldn’t wait to get off that bike. I was ready to tackle that 13.1 mile run and I executed my plan. I never felt terrible. I adjusted my pace expectations and tried to recover from the shitty mood I was in on the bike. Surprisingly the run made me smile, seeing friends on the course, seeing my sweet husband out there taking pics (and knowing he was hot and suffering too!). Yes it was an inferno out there (heat index hit 102) but I came full circle in my thoughts that day. I remember this race in 2017, so full of nerves and gratitude just to be there. And I never want to forget that. It takes courage just to toe the line of a race like this. And I never want to take for granted my ability to do this. I’m not a pro or a podium-finisher. But I finish what I start, and I am so full of gratitude for this sport, the friends I’ve made because of it, and my family who is behind me in everything I do. Thank you for the awesome pictures capturing this day @chris.whetzel 💜

Ironman 70.3 Augusta Race Recap 4:49:36:
Swim 30min: I’m always worried about the swim, it’s crazy to think that my time was only 30minutes, still can’t believe I was that fast.. current helped a bit or a lot, anyways felt amazing, no issues to report
Bike 2:34: I spent the whole training cycle trying to convince myself that I was going to be able to put a solid bike split.. it went very fast, a bit hilly but I think I prefer hilly than all flat.. I started swimming a bit late so I had to pass like at least 200 people, which was a new thing for me, felt nice.. maybe a bit too fast and I screwed the run? Whatever, I’m so happy that I’m a decent biker now! By mile 48 I started to worry about getting a flat (since I got 5 flats during my training cycle), I’m so glad that I didn’t
Run 1:37: this pisses me off so much because I’m always thinking that running is my strength, like I deserve to run fast just because I’m a decent runner, but I’m learning that just because I do ok in running races does not mean that I’m a fast runner on a 70.3. It was a suffer fest, super hot and humid, very little shade to hide from the sun, first 6 miles went decent, I wanted to run those at a controlled 6:50-7:00 pace, which I kind of did.. then, the plan was to let go and run fast, in my mind that pace was 6:30, hahaha that did not happen, ended up being a battle with myself to not walk, to get to the next aid station, then to get to the finish line.
Now time to focus on running and try to qualify to Boston, let’s go.
Throwback Thursday ... Our Founder, Steve Fales, took on the Augusta Ironman 70.3 and left us in awe with this champion finish.
Here’s some details if you’re not familiar with this endurance event. An Ironman 70.3 is a long-distance triathlon race. The 70.3 refers to the total distance in miles. Athletes swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, and run 13.1 miles. The time needed to complete a 70.3 distance event varies and can be influenced by external factors including terrain, weather conditions, and course conditions.
Augusta participants had 8 hours and 30 minutes to complete the course.
Congratulations to Steve on an amazing race!! #IM703Augusta #ironman703 #finishline #triathlete #TBT #endurance #triathlon #race #swim #cycle #competition #waytogo #congratulations #athlete #longdistance #ourfounder #amazingrace

A little late to the game but....I finished! 🙌🏻
And post race blues are no joke!
The swim: I wasn’t prepared for a rolling start to take as much out of me as it did. I didn’t bring water, we stood for almost 1.5 hours in the line and I decided not to pee before the start thinking I would just wait until transition since the swim would be fast. Augusta is known for a fast swim because of its current. Lucky me rumor has it there was ZERO current that day. Regardless it still felt amazing even with some awful foot cramps around 1500m that luckily resolved with occasional breast stroke kicks. Swim time: 35:55 1:55/100m
Bike: I have felt worse on the bike but I have also felt better. The temps kept rising and there was very MINIMAL cloud coverage. I was used to hills but this course had some loooooong gradual climbs that seemed never ending. For the duration of the bike I felt like I was having to work the.whole.time! By mile 54 both hamstrings started cramping and locking up, a problem I have never dealt with. I unclipped both feet and suffered my way through the last 2 miles stretching my legs out as needed. I had never been so excited to get off that dang bike when I got into transition. I lathered on sunscreen, hit up the porta potty and just hoped my legs would hold up for 13.1 miles. Bike time: 3:53:04 (14.4 mph)
The Run: oh.the.run. By this point the heat index had hit 100F and all hopes of a time goal were out the window. I just wanted my body to hold up and cross that finish line. The crowd support was amazing and my friends and family’s faces every couple miles is probably what kept me going. My feet kept cramping requiring me to walk jog. If I walked too long they cramped, if I ran too long they cramped. Luckily the change in pace and frequent stretching bought me time. I cried multiple times on the run thinking of my body giving in to the heat and then I would cry thinking of the finish line. My emotions were a whirlwind! With .1 miles to go, I paused, gathered myself and took in the moment I could hear the finish line right past the last turn. That finish line was everything I had imagined. Run time 2:44:44 Pace 12:35.
Life is a a wild ride!! Hold on tight and enjoy the ride.... happy bday @tri2onecoach & I’m overjoyed and happy we crossed paths #triathlon #im703augusta #puertorico @ironman70.3cartagena

So about last weekend...this picture sums it up pretty well. Not every race is a success but you definitely learn something each time. ‘Quick’ recap below. On to the next one.
I had high expectations going into this race. My early season races went pretty well and summer training with my @focusendurance crew was definitely helping the fitness. A lot going on in the real world with a new job and a new house but that’s the story of our life. I really wanted to finish the season off breaking the 4:30 mark at the 70.3 distance and felt I could do it.
On to the race. It was definitely hot but everyone had to deal with that. My swim was good (~26) and I was on track. I was excited to get on the bike and see what I could do on the new bike. I pushed just slightly harder than planned and around mile 45 or so I started feeling my quads telling me to cool it. Ended the bike in (~2:29) which was a tad slow but I was still on pace for my goal.
Now the fun part. As soon as I got on to the run I knew I was in trouble. I was hoping getting off the bike and stretching my legs out on the run would loosen up my quads but they weren’t having. The cramps in my legs reduced me to run/walking for the next 12 miles which was one of the most miserable things I’ve ever done. I eventually got to the end (~2:16) and was thankful it was over.
It was still a great weekend with friends and I’m super proud of my teammates that had amazing races on such a tough day, especially @nlawyer12 earning his Worlds spot. Thanks to all my family and friends for the support and reaching out.

So happy to say that I am finally a half Ironman!!! Sunday, 9.29.2019, my dream came true by finishing the 70.3 after a long 6 and half hours. Even though I wasn’t able to hit my goal time, it still was a great experience and good training for the next 70.3!! This won’t be the last and definitely trying for the full Ironman in the next year or so!!! Hard work always always pays off in the end. Nothing in life come easy and completing 70.3 truly was the most difficult thing I’ve done. If I can do it, anyone can do it!!! 😉 and as IRONMAN says “Anything is Possible” 🏊🏼♀️🚴🏼♀️🏃♀️ #ironman703 #ironman703augusta2019 #ironwoman #trilife #trigirl #swimbikerun #anythingispossible #ificandoitanybodycandoit #ificandoityoucandoit #ironmantri #im703 #im703augusta #trisunday #triathlon #triathlongirl #triathlonlove #triathlonforlife #triathlonbabes
I wrote a race report for Augusta 70.3. But it was so negative, I deleted it. That race was hard. Harder than imtx to walk that whole 13.1. But now I’m back on the horse. A little zwift and a little strength and a little straightening out of my head. This is a privilege and I’m fortunate. 😊😍

A little #TBT action to this past weekend’s #IM703Augusta. Great weekend with my @moxiemultisport family and friends from around the country. Had a slight challenge on the swim due to some new gear but made it out of the water and to the bike. Solid bike performance on a crowded course and then to the run on the sun. Wow! That run was unbelievably hot. Thankfully had great advise from my coach @race_chase with @braveheartcoaching_official and packed my kit with ice at the aid stations. Fought through the heat and made it to the finish line. Now time to continue my prep for #IMAZ. A special thanks to my teammates from #MoxieNation, @owsleo , and most of all, my Sherpa, Tess Fuss Kaplan. I couldn’t have done it without you!

Great work to TBTer @scottdcallahan who ripped a 4:41 at #im703augusta on his way to 3rd in the M50-54. Scott already punched his ticket to the #im703wc in New Zealand, which we just put on our calendar. Will we see you there?

It’s a short trip to #tbt this week....only 4 days ago to #im703augusta. Although it was my slowest time yet, it was the first race (of any distance) that I legitimately concerned about not being physically able to finish. Some of that was self inflicted during the race (nutrition adherence), bad luck (losing my hydration torpedo 3 miles into the bike), and the 96 degree weather. Looking through the official results, there was a 25% DNF/DQ/DNS percentage with well over 800 athletes on this category; one of the highest I’ve seen in any race I’ve done. Congrats to all that preserved and worked through all of the obstacles last week!! #triathletes #triathletelife #triathlete #triathletesofinsta #triathleteintraining #triathletesofinstagram #triathletetraining #triathlon #triathlons #triathlonlife #triathlonlifestyle #triathlons #ironmantraining #ironmantriathlete #ironman703 #ironman703training #ironman703augusta #ironmanaugusta703 #ironman703augusta2019 #fitat40 #fitnessover40 #swimbikerunworld #swimbikerun #cyclist #runnersofinstagram #halfironmantraining #halfironman @therunningwife26.2 #therunningwife

So very happy to have wrapped up my season with a podium at one of my favorite venues! 🥉 Augusta always delivers the HEAT! 💯🔥 And I love it, the hotter the better for me! •
It’s been very special to me every year I’ve raced here; this year was no exception. This sport has brought me some heartbreak in the past, but I’ve experienced so much healing and rejuvenation with every single start (and finish) line. 🧡 I am so grateful for all the volunteers who braved the steamy temps for us 💦 & for @lgwilliams18 who hosted me and cheered hard all day! Also so grateful for Brandon who took on a big boy’s weekend with Beckham while I traveled. He made it really special for our little guy. •
Huge congrats to all the athletes who battled through a HOT day — and a special congrats to the Pro Field, especially to @chelseasodaro 🥇& @spiampiano 🥈who pushed the pace all day. Honored to share the top steps with these two superstars! 🌟So impressed also with @tamarajewett (what a run!) & @raceolson (huge swim!) Everyone keeps lifting the bar higher and higher. It’s incredible. I’ll cherish these memories for a long time and hope to get another shot at popping that champagne in the future - I was totally rusty!🤣

Full Race Report- Augusta 70.3
This race was my practice for Wilmington, NC in 3 weeks. I am glad everything went wrong on this race; except I kept up with enough hydration that I never cramped.
Swim- Due to first 70.3 in year and lack of swimming... I had to wait at the end of the pack to swim with a wetsuit. Jumped in the water at 9:30am! Too late.
My favorite Roka goggles I only wear to race that never leak...leaked like no other. I went from kayak to kayak to fix. By the last kayak trying to tighten my strap .. it broke!!!!!!! It took another 5 plus minutes to tie them back together... I tied them good enough to finish the swim.
Get to transition to have a mound of ants 🐜 on my bike nutrition! Had to throw that out. Wasted more time and lack of full nutrition on bike.
Bike- you are aware what happened... but felt strong. Tried to save some energy and legs for a hot run.
Transition- starting to feel the heat ...almost 1:30pm.
Run- My head was not in the race at this point. Broke down crying on my bike one too many times.. just wanted to take it easy with the heat and avoid cramping.
It was a super slow run... “A Trot” Josh would call it. But that is all I had.
Super glad to finish safe and in one piece.
Thanks Josh for all of your support. You were a breathe of fresh air to see you waiting for me on the run to have a complete melt down on what happened to me on the bike. You continued to support and rally me knowing it was mentally tough.
Many will never experience what we have as a couple, as athletes and as best friends. I am thankful and blessed you are in my life. Many know what a truly good human being you are. You were hard to find...all the qualities and check boxes I was looking for. Dating for 10 years and this sport connected us and brought us together. Thank you for your strength Sunday.. never in my life did I need it more. Thanks Love ❤️ And Super Proud of our Moxie Team to take home some hardware 🥉 love all you! Good Peeps!! 💥👊🏼 #moxiemultisport #findyourmoxie #tricouple #triathlon #im703augusta
THE BIKE—my Augusta 70.3 experience.
I run to the mount line and get out quickly. First few miles are flat and I’m able to find a groove.
When I see the first big hill, I audibly proclaim “oh shit”. It’s a long climb. Shifting down down down.
A photographer dares to take our photo at the top of the climb. I decide to ride out of the saddle thinking it might make a good photo (swipe right—admittedly, I dislike every photo of me on the bike).
Just after I pass the camera man I’m immediately wiped and take a moment to collect myself for the flat and downhill.
I wasn’t able to record my ride, but I’m pretty sure I had a new top speed on the decent! It’s a nice reward for the climb.
Another hill. I find myself in the lowest gear. No where to go. I shift up and ride out of the saddle for 10 seconds. I’m encouraged by another woman who seems surprised by my effort considering my lack of gear.
I keep climbing and shift back down. Still feeling fairly strong.
Mile 15–First aid station. I successfully grab a water bottle from a volunteer.
A middle aged man passes me on the bike and shouts “OH MY GOD I LOVE THAT—ARE THOSE TENNIS SHOES!?” in a way that makes me laugh.
And shout back that yes, they are, and I’m a doc student so I’m trying to do this triathlon thing as cheaply as possible. He replied “that’s amazing.”
Hills hills and more hills.
Mile 30 aid station, grab some Gatorade from a volunteer. Beginning to feel uncomfortable on the bike... my neck aches... I attempt to stretch it out occasionally with little relief.
Just a couple more big climbs left. Pushing though discomfort.
My left foot begins to swell. At the time, I convinced myself that I must have cut my foot in transition because it felt as if blood was pooling around my toes.
Mile 45 aid station. Grab another water bottle (3/3 successful bottle grabs)!
Not long until I’m off the bike, but even the small hills feel like a big struggle.
Finally make it to transition. There is only a small group of spectators due to transition being a mile out from downtown—the energy is low.
I hop of the bike and my foot screams at me. I’m not running into transition.
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - 4:49:36 (40min Personal Best), yes, 40minutes.. Swim: 30min, Bike 2:34, Run: 1:37
I put in the work and this was the result. Amazing day out with my mom @neisabguerra_ and dad @ruggerip watching me race for the first time, it was pretty special! Of course @isamontani my coach/nutritionist/agent and much more was there to support me and as always pushed me so hard to perform at my best, she is the best person ever to have by your side on races and in normal life too haha, love you. Congrats to my training partner @leopenuela again with a super solid performance, it would be impossible to complete this kind of things without a training partner, so thanks so much buddy, and finally to @javiochoa91 who came all the way from Charlotte to support, grande!

An extended reflection (1/2) on the @ironmantri #im703augusta last weekend. In short: this was a good performance while testing out a couple new things in a race setting. All of this was done in function of my preparation of my first full Ironman distance event later this Fall.
First, a crazy project at work that went live a couple weeks ago + a 3m old baby + a 2.5y old toddler don’t enable you to get lots of sleep. Without @nathalie_dv82 ‘s support, this was not possible at all. She deals with the cranky sleep-deprived husband with so much grace. One thing is for sure: there will NOT be a full Ironman distance event on the calendar for 2020!
Secondly, it was HOT! From low 80s at the start of the bike to the low 90s at the end of the run. I particularly chose this race to experiment for my full Ironman in Cozumel. It will be hot and humid over there as well.
There are a couple positives I take away from this race:
1. Fastest swim ever! First time under 30’ for 1900m. Yes it was a downriver swim. But it was non-wetsuit legal so I had less buoyancy. I didn’t go all out, and was surprised how fresh I came out of the water. I can hold this pace for longer, and I did not panic when my goggles were kicked off.
2. Highest power output on the bike! Averaged 244 watts for ~2.5 hours (3.43 watts per kilo / 88% of current FTP). That is a 6% increase compared to April. The indoor @trainerroad sessions combined with HIIT spinning classes did make a significant difference.
3. Tested the arm sleeves and calve sleeves. I knew this would add time to my transitions. The intent is to avoid sun burn as much as possible being on the bike 5+ hours in Cozumel. I could get 1-2 minutes off each transition if I practice this more in training.
4. Hydration strategy was pretty good, and had a very steady running pace off the bike for the first 6 miles. I was cruising along! No leg cramps, no bonking! The metabolic switch did pay off. Train low, race “high” on carbs is a game changer. Kudos to @petershealthquest who clearly knows what he’s doing! I consumed 1/3th of the carbs, felt way better, and pushed more output 🤔

THE SWIM—my Augusta 70.3 experience.
I get to transition at 6:20am with 1.5 hours before the swim start. As I walk in I notice an incredibly long line for busses. We’re told transition closes in 40 minutes and that the shuttle service ends at 7am.
I set up transition hastily because I need to go to the bathroom and I’m concerned about the shuttle lines. The line for the bathroom is also too long. I worry I won’t make it to the first swim wave like I planned. I decide to wait for the bus instead.
I get on the bus at 7:20, 30 minutes to swim start. I make the decision to again avoid the restroom in favor of working my way up to the first swim wave. I’m there with 20 minutes to spare.
I don’t have the mental space to be nervous because all I can think about is peeing as soon as I get in the river. A braver triathlete exclaims that she just peed standing on the doc.
The gun goes off.
I dive in and the water temperature is comfortable. I spend the first few minutes just pulling and trying to pee.
I finally feel relieved and begin picking up my pace. I find some feet and I follow them.
Spotting is difficult—the sun is right in our eyes. I try to keep with the main group. I feel relaxed. I’m in my element.
I keep a comfortable pace, conserving my energy for the bike and run. Suddenly there’s a bunch of seaweed (riverweed?). I’m breaking stroke to pull long strands off of me that are wrapping around my arms and neck.
And then I swim straight into the branch of an underwater tree (what??). This brings me to a halt as I pull my head up and navigate around. I wonder what the nearest volunteer in the canoe thought as they continued to see people run into this thing.
Hop out of the river and wave to my fiancé —I’m second in my age group. I slowly jog on covered gravel into transition. Im cautious not to step on something with my bare feet.
Due to my poorly set up transition station, it takes me a couple of minutes to double check that I have everything I need. I get down a Gu and some Powerade and I’m headed out on the bike.
First time for a real smile at the swim exit, it’s either because I just recorded my best time ever (put a lot of work into this the past 3 months) or the cluster of people gave me a chance to show off some of that lateral mobility to run/ jump/cut and channel that @alvinkamara @leonardfournette energy #runningback #runitback #wynrepublic #wyninthewild #triathlon #swimbikerun #im703augusta #triathlon_world #triathlete

If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s to grow. That’s what this #timetrialtuesday is about. The bike at #im703augusta was admittedly slower than I’d hoped; however, my normalized power was alright (239). There were a handful of guys with quicker splits than I with much lower power. Of course, there are other factors like weight and the fact that I’m built like a freakin’ tank compared to so-and-so at 140lbs, but that’s not the point. 🤣
This race made me realize that while I’ve been building some great fitness spending time on a trainer, I haven’t developed the insights to manage power effectively. Most of my workouts get served to me in erg mode with my attention going to cadence and heart rate. Looking at the time I spent in different power zones, I was camping out in >280 for far too long. My average power was okay, but I got there by some extreme swings. Can’t complain though, it’s only the second 70.3 I’ve completed with a power meter. Chattanooga was the first, but I lost 13 minutes waiting on a bike tech so the data was hairy. 🤷🏼♂️
In summary, Augusta bike was okay... I’m ready to fully embrace the post-season, but I really enjoy learning so when I’m training slightly less I’m going to be studying slightly more. Picked up the power meter handbook to help me improve on the bike next year! 💪🏼🚴🏼♂️
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated as well! 🙋🏼♂️

I haven’t said much about #IM703Augusta last weekend, mainly because a lot of people who mean a lot to me had a big day with monumental achievement and they deserved to revel in their glory and pride without my brooding over how my day turned out so very different - Sunday I had my first real encounter with SIPE a little more than half way through the swim. It was sudden, unexpected, and frightening. I was determined to complete the swim...and it was an uphill battle from there to help my body rebound and safely compete to the finish. In the end, I fought like hell but called my race just shy of 40 miles into the bike. Today was my first day back in the water, with barely 48 hours to lick my wounds and heal my scarred ego. I still had remnants of 2739 scribbled on my forearms and 46 on my right calf. I wasn’t sure what would run through my mind as I met the water again tonight, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. As it turns out, it wasn’t the stuff that scared me. It wasn’t that first breath 800m into my race when I felt my chest tighten, or the rattling that got louder with every inhale, or the blood-tinged spittle that confirmed what was happening, or the grind that was the effort to pull my body out of the water in one piece. It was the first half of that swim - the REALLY good half...the plunge in the water right behind Leah and Rebecca, the sleek cutting through the water I felt with each stroke, the sight of the crowd every time I turned to breathe. It was the giant US flag hanging from the bridge that I watched every time I turned to sight. It was the progress because I have an amazing and supportive coach. I met the water tonight and it was peaceful, purposeful. It was calm and so was I. I knew from my first stroke tonight, I hadn’t stopped on Sunday - I paused. I’ll have my day again, and maybe later have my way with Augusta. I’m proud beyond words of everyone who conquered this race on Sunday, and I’m determined to keep moving forward. A storm’s coming to #IMSTG2020, and it’s passing through #ChallengeDaytona December 14 ✊🏼🤘🏼
I had a great race at Augusta 70.3. -

On Sunday I completed my first Half Ironman, Augusta 70.3. It was a hot, hot day, but I had a blast.
I had a bit of a struggle at the start of the swim, but settled in after getting my heart rate down. This was my first open water swim without a wetsuit, even though I was hoping for a faster time, this is a big step forward for me.
The bike was by far my favorite, and best part of my race. I felt so strong and in control for the whole ride. I passed many people (stopped counting at 700) and didn’t get passed once! My bike split was in the top 10% and I averaged the MPH and Watts I had been expecting. All in all a great ride.
The run was the most brutal run I’ve ever completed. As soon as I got off my bike the heat hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew my pace was going to be slower then I had trained for, but was surprised by how much the heat impacted me. I did everything I could to keep my body temperature down (ice, sponges, etc) and was able to finish with a smile! Seeing Genevieve and Eloïse was a HUGE boost!!! It was a long journey to get there but it was definitely worth it! I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the constant support and encouragement of my amazing, beautiful wife/best friend @genevieve.photo and my favorite cheerleader Eloïse. Also thanks to @ironmarc_68 for always being available to answer my questions, it was a great help. Finally thanks to all my family and friends who sent me well wishes and messages to cheer me, so very appreciated.

It has been a busy busy summer for us at Dark Horse Triathlon HQ and we’re welcoming the cooler days and slower pace of fall. What hasn’t slowed down is the fast and furious racing of our athletes all over the world. We had over a dozen athletes competing at Ironman 70.3 world championships in France last month and seven others are putting the finishing touches on their prep for Kona. Speaking of Kona, Natalie (pictured above) qualified to race there next October by virtue of her performance at Ironman Maryland this past weekend. She’ll be hitting the start line in Hawaii next year at the ripe young age of 75! Other strong performances this last weekend were @irnmags with a 4th place AG finish at IM Maryland (missing Kona by one spot!), @lucyjbrash taking the overall women’s amateur title at Augusta 70.3 and Garrett B with a personal best 2nd place AG finish in Augusta as well. Already racking up slots for next year’s 70.3 WC in Taupo. What we’re really after is world domination after all 😂
Finally getting around to posting pics from our weekend in Augusta. It was incredible to watch these guys crush their first half Ironman and leave it all out there on the course. By far the hottest race I have done to date. #im703augusta #musclecramps
“If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” Racing a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run in under 6 hours is one of my big, scary dreams. And I didn’t make that dream come true this weekend. •
I finished the Augusta Half Ironman in 6:14:15, which still crushed my PR by 19 minutes, so objectively, I should be pretty happy. Add in a bike mechanical issue & a 100 degree heat index, and falling short of my goal time sounds even more understandable. But this was my 3rd Half Ironman, and I still don’t think I’ve even come close to having a good race at this distance. •
No matter what speed I’m going, I love every chance to toe a start line and I am forever grateful for the grace of God that has gotten me to every finish line. Also a big shoutout to Serena for being the best teammate at the race and the long training sessions leading up to it! And thank you thank you thank you to every one of my @playtrikc coaches and teammates who have forced me to swim when I didn’t want to, biked up every hill in KC with me, and paced me to run faster than I thought I could. My entire triathlon season wouldn’t have been near as fun without each of you! •
I’m closing out my 2019 triathlon season by calling this a “rebuilding” year (in true Razorbacks & Royals fashion). I’ll be back to chase that elusive sub 6:00 Half Ironman next year 👊🏼🏊🏼♀️🚴🏼♀️🏃🏼♀️ #im703augusta #halfironman #swimbikerun #playtri
On the gas at #IM703Augusta on Sunday, back to boulder on Wednesday, then Kona bound on Sunday for a week of coffee boat swims and underpants runs. But most importantly, some motivation to get myself on that start list next year.
Nothing like a post race hour long recovery run Sweat angel. I started this run at 175lbs and ended at 168lbs. I actually gained about 8.5lbs while on course racing #im703augusta this is probably due to the amount of salt/ electrolytes and the way my body will naturally hold water weight.
70.3 miles? idk lmao maybe we could just Uber?
Had an incredible time at my first half ironman! I wouldn’t have even made it to the plane if not for some amazing people—@jonathan_spiegel for this crazy friggin idea, @lambertghinimercy for the Triathlon 101, @anquixotee and @nlindsay19 for getting me through my race week freakouts, and @acmaniatis for a pre-marathon pep talk back in May that I leaned on through many 4-hour training blocks, 5 AM alarms, and every step forward on race day. It’s been unreal! #im703augusta #swimbikerun #splashcruisejog

This is the third time I’ve brought a medal home from Augusta. I’m quite a different athlete than my first 70.3 at Augusta in 2013, but I’m just getting started. Pleased with my race, yet not satisfied! I think I’ll be visiting Augusta again. 🤷🏼♂️😉

Long long post, but all you really need to read is the first little bit unless you want the full race recap (my feelings won’t be hurt either way 😉). First off, the amount of people that took a brief moment out of their day after my dramatic post at the finish line yesterday to give me words of love, comfort, encouragement etc... was BEYOND amazing!! Seriously, people near & far-some who I talk to everyday and some who I talk to once a year if I’m lucky reached out. It astonishes me the people that are watching me and rooting for me day in & day out that I don’t even know about. I seriously hope I replied to each and every one of you, I tried to make sure I got back to all of you.
I was (obviously) a little emotional yesterday. I don’t think I have ever cried during a race. Afterwards, yea a few big races I have, but during, nope! And yesterday I cried at least once during every mile of that run. For stupid things mostly.
Today I think I’ve moved past the disappointment and onto the positives that I can take out of that race because there were positives!! Race recap:
Waiting to start the swim was bruuuutal!!!! You’re on top of a big hill that leads down to the water and you stand in a group of where you think your finish time would fall. It’s a loooong line of people just barely moving. We actually had to go down to the bottom first because in true Leah/Rebecca fashion, there was a chance we had mixed up our timing chips and we weren’t sure who was wearing which one so we had to get new ones 🤦🏻♀️ so we decided to just hang at the bottom of the hill for our group to come by instead of going against thousands of people. (It won’t all fit in 1 post so I will continue in the comments should you want to continue)
It’s #medalmonday & this bad boy was most definitely earned yesterday! Got a new PR in the books and placed 9th in AG! ROC MEDALS & METAS MONDAY: Kristin @kristinqmartin totally crushed her first half ironman @ironmantri #im703augusta with a perfectly executed race! She finished with a total time of 5:38:12 which placed her 16th in her category of 175 women, and 90th out of a total of 976 women competing that day! It was a tough, hot, challenging Ironman 70.3 I want to thank everyone for the kind words and support. I went as hard as I could and left it all on the course. Thanks especially to @don_walker_cycles for a kick ass time trial bike that allowed me to PR the bike split on a Hilly and hot course. I had a fun swim and a really good bike split but lord did I pay the price on the run. It took all I had to keep moving in the 97 degree heat as my wave (rolling start) got in the water two hours after the Pros which guaranteed a hot day ahead. Lots of people to pass on the bike and about lost my voice from yelling “on your left” hundreds of times as I rolled by newbies, novices and even lots of hard core triathletes. I have to admit I love the reaction from the 20 and 30 year old fit and skinny triathletes riding their $10,000 carbon rocket ships as the old football player and track racer passes them... the looks are priceless. Super proud of LOVE teammates @tararocker and Jana Weems for taking on their first Ironman event. A real baptism by fire yesterday. Proud of you both and Jana tried to run me down during the run.
