Still on this POWERHOUSE ELDERBERRY: Did you know that in 2016, study published in Nutrients showed that elderberry supplementation can reduce the duration and symptoms of a cold in air travelers. Travelers using this herb from 10 days before travel until four to five days after arriving overseas experienced on average a two-day shorter duration of their colds and also a noticeable reduction in cold symptoms. The leading cause of death in the world remains heart disease. Though people are living longer, the rate of heart disease fatality is on the rise. What are we doing to educate ourselves in order to beat this global epidemic? Here's an excerpt from an article I read today.. "Overall, there were 54.7 million deaths worldwide in 2016. Nearly three-quarters (72.3 percent) of those deaths were from so-called "noncommunicable diseases," or those that cannot pass from person to person, including heart disease, stroke and cancer. From 2006 to 2016, the total number of deaths from communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional diseases (which the researchers call "CMNN") decreased by nearly 24 percent. In particular, there's been substantial progress in reducing deaths among children under age 5 years old, who often die from respiratory infections or complications from early birth, the report said. In 2016, the number of deaths among children under age 5 dropped below 5 million for the first time in modern history — down from 11 million deaths in 1990 and 16.4 million deaths in 1970, the researchers said. Deaths from HIV/AIDS among both children and adults have also declined, by 46 percent since 2006, and deaths from malaria have declined by 26 percent since 2006. However, the total number of deaths from noncommunicable diseases increased by 16 percent from 2006 to 2016, meaning there were an extra 5.5 million deaths from these conditions in 2016 compared to 10 years earlier. Ischemic heart disease was the leading cause of death, resulting in nearly 9.5 million deaths in 2016, an increase of 19 percent since 2006. Every now & again we all get into the habit of putting things on the back burner. This collage represents places that have been hit by natural disasters, terrorist attacks or some sort of grief in recent months. . In Manchester Arena where 22 people were killed & many more injured. . We've seen the Grenfell Tower block in west London where 80 people were killed & hundreds of people homeless. . Sierra Leone, West Africa where 400 were killed by the mudslides & over 600 remain missing. . Barcelona, Spain where 16 people were killed in a terrorist attack. . Houston Texas, Hurricane Harvey disaster took 9 lives & thousands of people lost their homes. . Nepa & India reported over 1200 people dead & millions are now homeless. . Benue State, Nigeria, 30 people killed & over 100,000 people have been dislodged from their homes. . The list goes on & on & on. - The point is, no matter where tragedy strikes or how it strikes, we all feel the same pain. We all have the same fears, hopes, dreams & aspirations. When the terrorist attack took place in Barcelona, social media was full of "Pray for Barcelona" messages which is a good thing. However, a few weeks before that, mudslides had claimed the lives of men, women & children in Sierra Leone, 300 of them to be precise & most were killed in their sleep. Bodies were found scattered around but I didn't see the same messages of "Pray for Sierra Leone" as they were for Barcelona? The media didn't say much about it & most people I spoke to weren't aware it happened. - Same applies to India & Nepal where over 1200 people lost their lives in the monsoon floods, millions are now homeless & not a lot is said about it? . I understand that when terrorist attacks happen, it defies everything that makes us human. We ask ourselves, "Why?" However, a life is a life & at the end of the day, we are all human.
