Old Trail Town, Cody WY. I have to credit my husband Brian with these amazing pictures he snapped of this place. . This town lies on the original area that William Cody (Buffalo Bill) chose for the location of Cody Town. The structures have been relocated from other areas surrounding the town and housed some of the most notorious outlaws of the Wild West. Cabins used by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as a saloon frequented by Cassidy’s “Hole in the Wall Gang” are among them. There’s also the log cabin home of “Curley” the Crow Indian army scout who helped guide Lt. Col. George A. Custer and the US 7th Cavalry to the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The grave of mountain man John Johnston who was the inspiration behind the 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson portrayed by Robert Redford. There’s thousands of artifacts that were collected from this area and I could literally spend a week just reading and seeing everything. If you can’t tell, I love history. . . . . . #wildwest #wayoutwest #cody #codywy #codywyoming #wyoming #wy #traveling #adventurefamily #adventure #rving #happycamper #exploremore #americanhistory #ushistory #ilovehistory #homeschool #homeschoolers #crosscountry #raisethemwild #wildandfree #instahistory #history #instanature #oldtown #ghosttown

[Part 2] . ‘The next 100 yards were one interminable nightmare – we were climbing over a mass of moving, slippery bodies, some clinging to our feet, grabbing at us, holding on to our clothes. At last we reached the first barricade. Here, the water was over our heads, but we made it across. . ‘From here on we proceeded faster… At the next barbed wire barrier a bit of light seeped from an open manhole… Germans! In absolute silence we searched for the breaks in the wire cut earlier by our men. We found them low under water. Holding up the wires, one by one we swam through. We all made it. . ‘Tired out, leaning on each other, gasping for breath we plowed on. Somewhere nearby, there should be the branch sewer leading to City Centre. But where?... Where the hell was that promised liaison man? My commands to keep together no longer had any effect. Our line began to stretch & break. . ‘To make things worse we began to meet soldiers apparently strayed from other units… Lost, they were coming out of side sewers whose exits were blocked by rubble. Half-crazy, they waded in the water back & forth… seeking some way out. Some screamed hysterically that there was no more oxygen, that we were being gassed. One wanted to throw a grenade at a locked manhole… . ‘My legs were giving away – for a moment I leaned against the wall, helpless… Was this really the end, I asked myself. Suddenly… a stream of fresh air hit my face. Slowly, moving my hand along the wall I found an opening… “I’ve found an exit!” I called to the others. “Gather around me!”… I sent one of my soldiers to investigate the side canal. . ‘The soldier returned with a liaison man from City Centre. It was the right exit after all! With new strength, on all fours, we crawled through the narrow stinking sewer, climbed a ladder to a higher level which led straight to the manhole, & there, using a rope we reached the street. . ‘Bright sunlight blinded me. It took me several seconds to recognize… Ujazdów Blvd, Warsaw’s most beautiful avenue. It was 2 o’clock in the afternoon. 16 hours had passed since we entered the sewers. . ‘We entered the nearest building… half alive but intact. I fell asleep.’ . ~ Jerzy Zapadko

[Part 1] . ‘We were making our way in tenebrous darkness, touching one another so as not to lose contact. We knew this sewer… but progress was extremely slow & after a half hour we came for a complete halt. “What’s going on in front? Why aren’t we getting into the main storm sewer?” – I sent a message up the line. “German barbed-wired barricades” the answer came back. . ‘We seated ourselves crosswise in the narrow sanitary sewer pipe… our buttocks in the oozing, stinking muck… I took out a loaf of bread, opened my penknife, & asked for light. Someone struck a match… but there was not enough oxygen to sustain the flame. I wiped the putrid mess off my hands… & cut the bread in the dark, passing it up & down the line. I ate my small portion… somehow without revulsion. I was hungry. . ‘Time began to drag. Ahead, nothing was moving… I suddenly imagined the bristling barricade reaching to the top of the sewer, water up to the chin, & middle-aged ladies trying to climb the thorny wires which swayed, & bent, & cut, but did not give… “What is happening at the barricade? Pass the question up the line!” – I commanded. No answer came. I waited a few more minutes, then gave orders to force our way through. Pushing one another, we soon reached the wide main storm sewer. . ‘With mixed feelings of anger & compassion I realized what was holding us up. The Germans had seeded the sewers with carbide grains which, when wet, exuded poisonous gases. Several of the older people in front had succumbed to the fumes & could not move on, blocking the passage. Some were unconscious, some begging for help. We began to pick them up & drag them. With every step the water became deeper, the air fouler, our charges heavier. . ‘Suddenly I stumbled over something soft in the water. With horror I realized that it was a human body. I tried to lift it & drag it, but then… there was a second, a third… still alive & moving. What to do? We were gasping for breath ourselves – the gas, the lack of oxygen – our strength was ebbing. One of our girls fainted, then a boy. Frantically I thought we can’t go on like this, or we too will be buried here forever. “Push on!” I barked. . ~ Jerzy Zapadko

Brough Castle, Cumbria, England. Located in the beautiful Cumbrian Eden Valley in northern England, high on a dominant ridge stands the impressive Brough Castle. Around just 20 miles across the hills from its neighbour castle at Brougham, ironically Brough Castle was not just also under the ownership of the powerful 'Clifford' family but it was also built upon the remains of a previous Roman fort. Being located in such proximity to the Scottish border, the castle has inevitably seen action against invading Scots on more than one occasion. Brough Castle is currently owned by @englishheritage but is free of charge to visit. Built on a 1st century Roman military fort, the first castle was built in the 11th century using much of the previous ditches to construct the fortress. Much of the castle was ruined by William I, King of Scotland, after he set it a blaze following its capture by his invading Scottish forces in 1174. The large stone keep ruins that you can see today are the most impressive on the site today and it's roots lie in around the year 1200. Ownership of the castle was passed by King John to Robert de Vieuxpont in 1203 and the family would consistently improve the castle until Robert the Younger died in battle in 1264. The castle then passed into the hands of the powerful 'Clifford' family who would maintain ownership for over 400 years. . . Fun Facts! • The Roman fort was one of a chain all defending the route from York to Carlisle. . •In 1521, Brough Castle suffered severe damage at the hands of an accidental Christmas fire. . . . . . . . . #historicalbritain #freetourguide #englishheritage #englishheritagesites #broughcastle #brough #castlesofinstagram #castles_oftheworld #castlesofbritain #englishcastles #englishhistory #britishhistory #northernengland #outdoorhistory #instahistory #instagramhistory #instacastles #lovehistory #historygeek #historyfacts #cumbria #stainmorepass #medievalcastle #castleonthehill #europecastles #romanfort

#OTD the 21st August 1911 the Mona Lisa is stolen by a petty criminal called Vincenzo Perugia.. . Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, is the most famous painting in the world. Originally it was bought by the King of France Francis I in 1516 but when the French revolution happened it was moved to the Lourve.. . The painting was stolen by Vincenzo Perugia who had moved to Paris in 1908 and worked at the Louvre. He stole the painting one evening after the gallery has shut, by taking it out of his frame and then hiding it under the white work coat, which all employees wore. When the gallery opened he simply walked out with the painting under the white coat.. . The disappearance of the painting took everyone by surprise and it was only discovered because Vincenzo Perugia (calling himself Leonardo Vincenzo) contacts an art dealer in Florence named Alfredo Geri and offered to bring the painting to Italy for the 500,000 lire award. A month later Vincenzo travelled to Italy with the painting hidden in a trunk with a false bottom. Once he arrived Geri convinced him to leave the painting for expert examination and the police arrested Perugia later that day.. . #Hiddenhistory #history #Whathappenedtoday #onthisday #knowyourhistory #todayinhistory #todaymatters #instahistory #monalisa #museudolouvre

Middleham castle . Middleham Castle keep from the south-west. It was probably built in the 1170s, and remains one of the largest such keeps in the country. . .

Middleham castle . ▪️ The present castle was begun sometime in the late 12th century. The great tower or keep was probably built in the 1170s. The clue to this date lies in the carved stone capitals in the chapel in the north-east corner of the keep (now inaccessible), which have ‘waterleaf’ decoration – a form of carving known to have been used elsewhere in Yorkshire in the second half of the 12th century. . A tower was added to the east side of the keep in the first half of the 13th century, with a chapel on its top floor. . Middleham castle . There is only slender evidence for any occupation in the area before the Norman Conquest of 1066. A Roman bathhouse has been uncovered about 10 miles south-east of Middleham, probably part of a temple or villa. . We know from Domesday Book (1086) that one Gilpatrick held land in and around ‘Medelai’ (Middleham) in the time of Edward the Confessor (reigned 1042–66). After the Norman Conquest, William I (r.1066–87) granted the lands in and around Middleham to Alan Rufus, ‘the Red’, his second cousin and one of his chief supporters. . The synagogue in Pisa, Italy 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹. Whilst not quite as leaning as other buildings in the city, this is well worth visiting if you're in town. The synagogue has been on the same site since the end of the 16th century, and was totally rebuilt and restructured in the 1860s according to a design by the architect Marco Treves. If only Treves had got his nunbers wrong and it leaned a bit... ON THIS DAY IN ROYAL HISTORY . 21 August 1765 . King William IV was born . . ◼ William was born in the early hours of the morning on 21 August 1765 at Buckingham House, the third child & son of King George III & Queen Charlotte. His full title at birth was His Royal Highness The Prince William Henry. . About King William IV ; . ◼ William IV was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland & of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death. He was the last king & penultimate monarch of Britain's House of Hanover. . ◼ He served in the Royal Navy in his youth & was, both during his reign & afterwards, nicknamed the "Sailor King". He served in North America & the Caribbean, but saw little actual fighting. . ◼ Since his two older brothers died without leaving legitimate issue, he inherited the throne when he was 64 years old. His reign saw several reforms: the poor law was updated, child labour restricted, slavery abolished in nearly all the British Empire, & the British electoral system refashioned by the Reform Act 1832. Though William did not engage in politics as much as his brother or his father, he was the last monarch to appoint a Prime Minister contrary to the will of Parliament. Through his brother, the Viceroy of Hanover, he granted that kingdom a short-lived liberal constitution. . ◼ At the time of his death, William had no surviving legitimate children but he was survived by eight of the ten illegitimate children he had by the actress Dorothea Jordan, with whom he cohabited for 20 years. William was succeeded in the United Kingdom by his niece, Victoria, & in Hanover by his brother, Ernest Augustus I. . .

The Messerschmitt Me 262, aka Me 262 Schwalbe or Stormbird, was introduced in the Luftwaffe during April 1944 and was the world's first operational jet powered fighter aircraft. It was also used as a light bomber, for reconnaissance missions or as a night fighter aircraft. It was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter plane . . The Me 262 was so fast, that German pilots struggled to effectively attack enemy aircrafts, and needed to develop new tactics. Luftwaffe ace Johannes Steinhoff was quoted as saying "I am too fast" . . Me 262's impact was also affected by some reliability issues and by the problems and shortages Germany was facing at the time it was introduced late in the war. The Allies were also successful in attacking it from the ground during takeoffs and landings . . A technological marvel, ahead of its time, the Me 262 inspired and influenced many future post war aircrafts . . In the image we see the first Me 262 to be captured by the Allies, when the test pilot defected on March 31st, 1945. The aircraft was sent to the US for testing . . This is the "Miraculous Staircase" in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When the chapel was first completed in 1878 it seems they forgot the need to access the choir loft, which was 22 feet above. Carpenters called in to address the problem all said that the only answer that would not interfere with the space of the tiny chapel was to use a ladder. This was not acceptable to the Sisters of the Chapel who prayed for nine days. On the ninth day a man showed up with donkey and tools looking for work. It has two 360 degree turns, no visible means of support, no nails just wooden pegs. After completing the stairs, the carpenter went away without pay. They tried to find him, but to no avail. Legend is that it was St. Joseph himself.. . . . . . #photooftheday #picoftheday #historical #history #architecture #historicalarchitecture #historicalbuilding #historicalbuildings #sightseeing #americanhistory #instahistory #tourist #tourism #igtravel #wanderout #traveldeeper # travelusa #wanderlust #miracles #church #historicalchurch #catholic #catholicchurch #chapel #newmexico #santafenm #landofenchantment . . . . . .Sent via @planoly #planoly
