Handstand body alignment drill. Essential to get a feel for the body position required to hold a handstand. Walk feet up the wall until your hands are as close as feels comfortable (probably no further than I have here). Point toes, tense glutes, tense core and press through the shoulders. Hold for 30-60 seconds and build up to about 5 sets of 60 seconds. This will build alignment, strength and endurance. I used to perform this drill multiple times a week with splits stretching in the rest periods. I also continued to do this drill at the start of a session before doing freestanding work. Been a while since Iโ€™ve done it so my form is by no means the best. More handstand tips to follow.

Want to learn the splits? The pancake stretch is a good start that will also benefit squatting and handstand training. Also a must if you spend hours at a desk or on a bike! The drill above: Place a small object in front of you and push it a little further each time. Youโ€™ll be surprised how you get a little further each time. Repeat for 10 reps and hold the 10th for 10 seconds. When I was learning Iโ€™d do about 5 sets each session (in between other exercises) 4-5 times a week. Tag me in your attempts. at City of London

Whoโ€™s learning how to handstand this year? Not got good balance? Not got the flexibility? Not got the strength? I had none of these before I started practicing. Not really a surprise when I hadnโ€™t spent any time on them before. As @garyvee says you werenโ€™t born knowing how to drive a car but you learnt that. Find a good teacher and practise. One or two ad hoc handstand attempts in the gym wonโ€™t cut it in the beginning unfortunately. Iโ€™ve had a couple of months off but the hard work of a few years ago has meant the handstands have stuck around so little maintaining is required. Itโ€™s easy to come up with reasons not to start. I thought the unstable ligaments in my left shoulder would stop me, or some mild thoracic soliosis, or various muscle imbalances. UNTIL I decided to try regardless. I wouldnโ€™t advise it but I continued being able to do handstands for months on a torn muscle in my forearm. Mild motivational rant over. Stop fretting about Brexit and go squat deep. Focus on what you can control and get some strong legs. Not trained consistently for a few weeks and christened the new gym with 3 days back to back squats. Legs are in bits so a light 8 x 3 today. PRESS TO HANDSTAND. An intriguing balance of strength and mobility. Enough strength to support the body and provide a base for the legs to โ€˜lift offโ€™. Enough mobility to lets the legs loop and the spine roll. This movement was worked in in lots of individual stages for me. Itโ€™s a nice one to train when I have little time as it hits pretty much everything. Pleased the straddle mobility has stuck around despite the heavy squatting and daily cycling in London. Rings for upper body and barbell for lower body. My strength training in a nutshell. I do some weights for upper body joint prep. Also some bodyweight leg exercises and lots of leg mobility. This gym has all I need, nothing fancy and inexpensive. Heavy squats and deadlifts today after a busy week. SOUND ON ๐ŸŽง--So this happened this Tuesday and Iโ€™m freaking out a little. ๐Ÿ’ฅ Last week Greg aka @greg.wallrus comes to open gym and says lets get you to base castaways. I straight up laughed at his face. ๐Ÿ™ŠI said maybe some of the progressions but I donโ€™t think so. We got reverse star pop to throne and I was thrilled about it. ๐ŸŒžSunday came and I watched and spotted him base super new flyers as he took them through all the progressions safely, building up to castaways. This week I decided I was ready. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐ŸฝMy body was doing the work and my mind couldn't understand how it was happening. He was so patient with us and is truly a teacher in his bones. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ Iโ€™m bummed LA wonโ€™t be able to keep you. Japan I hope youโ€™re able to appreciate whats coming your way. MOTIVATIONAL: Guys do NOT be fooled! Gymnastics is not easy. Progress takes so much time and energy before you get any results. 8 months ago I got my back walkover and I have worked so hard to develop variations and connects. It was SO hard to get any new skills being self taught and any small breakthrough felt so massive. 4 months ago I joined an acro class and Iโ€™ve noticed the difference with all my skills. I have gained tonnes of new tricks and Iโ€™m excited to see what else I can learn. The second clip is from 2 and a 1/2 years ago. This video shows how long it took me took get my back handspring. So many times I thought I would never get there. To some people itโ€™s not a big deal but to me it feels incredible. Thanks you to everyone who had supported and encouraged me!
