Flower week - Vygies/Mesembs. I always tell people if they're struggling to grow anything else - grow these resilient beauts. Even though some are endangered due to habitat encroachment they are hardy to almost any stress toucan throw at them - resulting in them becoming quite the nuisance in other countries. "Mesembs form a major and unique component of southern Africa's arid land flora. Succulent leaves, bright shiny-petalled flowers and hygrochastic fruit (capsules open when it rains) characterize the group. Mesembs are extremely diverse, particularly so in the Succulent Karoo Region, although they have a strong presence in the Fynbos." 🌻 🌻 🌻 #flowerweek #mesembs #flower #floralphotography #botany #botanicals #growyourownfood #growyourown #botanicalphotography #hardy #invasivespecies #indigenous #succulents #botanicalpickmeup #flowerstagram #flowerstagram #flowersofinstagram #plantstagram #plantlover #plantlife #gardenstagram #gardener #plantsofinstagram #pickmeup #picoftheday #fynbos #southafrican #proudlysouthafrican #mzansi

Invasive Vine Globe . A vine globe made entirely of invasive Japanese Hop Vine. Every year starting in early summer the Japanese Hops take over the upper bank of the creek where I do a lot of my sculpture work, choking out all other vegetation. It’s covered in tiny spines that let it climb tree trunks and pull down any weaker plants, and as a result is one of the few things I wear gloves to work with. It will grow prolifically into early fall and then die off all at once till next summer. It’s important we recognize the damage that invasives like this do to native plants and recognize they’re only here because someone planted them for landscaping at some point. Please use native plants for your gardens! Anyway, I’ve always enjoyed taking something destructive and turning it into something beautiful, hence all my work with honeysuckle and stuff like this. Thought it would be fun to shoot it in the water too so a bit of both here. . #vine #vines #invasiveplants #invasivespecies #hops #vineart #vinesculpture #vineglobe #green #useinvasives #creek #creekart #deercreek #art #sculpture #natureart #naturalsculpture #natural #nature #environmentalart #environmentalsculpture #ephemeralart #ephemeral #landart #stlouis

European wand loosestrife (Lythrum virgatum) very pretty but also invasive 🌱💀😭 native to Europe and Asia wetlands and other damp places as well as in the European and Asian horticultural industry. The Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) recommends the following methods of removal under their Monitoring and Rapid Response section. “Small plants and seedlings can be dug out. Larger plants can be dug out making sure to remove all root fragments. Remove all plant parts and either burn, landfill, or bury deep in the ground. Mowing is not recommended. Galerucella beetles have been successful in many parts of the state in controlling purple loosestrife populations and are likely to affect wanded loosestrife as well.” #Lythrum #Lythraceae #invasiveSpecies #invasiveplants #conservation #wildflowers #botany #nature #outdoors #plants

An invasive species, the Greenhouse Frog (Eleutherodactylus planirostris) isn't too fussy on its choice of habitat! In Honduras, I have only ever encountered this species in urban environments; this time in a #wendys carpark!... While invasive species are often detrimental to native species, I think sometimes they deserve a round of applause, after all, their adaptability to the human world is usually what makes them successful!! #ispyintheseatosky ... Himalayan Blackberry is a well-known plant, but did you know it was invasive? This invasive shrub is commonly found along disturbed sites like fences, railroad tracks, rivers and stream banks, wetlands and forest edges throughout Southwestern BC. Unfortunately, this means it outcompetes native vegetation, restricts access by wildlife to water courses and limits recreational access. We are strategically controlling the invasive Himalayan Blackberry in the Squamish area, while eradicating it from Whistler and Pemberton. Reporting this plant helps eliminate it from those areas. Report any sightings by calling (604) 698-8334, emailing [email protected] or visiting ssisc.ca/report. #himalayanblackberry #invasivespecies @communityfoundationofwhistler @rmwhistler @squamishtown @awarewhistler

@dr.andreavannini

Invasions by alien species are frequently underestimated because so sneaky. This could be the case of Carpobrotus edulis (Hottentot-fig): originating from South Africa, the species has been imported to Europe starting from XVI century, because of beautiful flowers (yellow or pink) and edible fruits, which taste resemble whose of real figs. . Where climate was particularly ideal for it (sandy coastal dunes) and in presence of human disturbance to native vegetation, Hottentot- fig started to be invasive, replacing almost all native species thus destroying biodiversity . It is not too simple to eradicate this species, for two reasons: 1- it produces thousands of small seeds, trasported by birds and other animals feeding on fruits; 2- tourists and locals see the plant as a "beauty" for coloured flowers, able to improve the landscape quality. Paradoxically, they print alien Hottentot-figs on postcards! . In this picture, I captured the silent spread of a new invasor along the dunes of Marana beach, near Biguglia (Corsica, France), in the mid of tourists indifference. . #aliens #invasivespecies #conservation #biodiversity #ecology #educazioneambientale #ambiente #sustainability #plants #carpobrotus #hottentotfig #corsica #france #sensibilizzazione #nospeciealiene #dune #coasts #salvaguardia #igers #igersitalia #naturelovers #nature #nature_sultans #picoftheday #science #komorebi #ilovemyjob #biologo #passion at Plage de la Marana

I found this bloom deep in the woods awhile ago, and I learned that it is a creeping bellflower. This campanula species was introduced from Europe as an ornamental plant, and now it is a very invasive weed here in North America.
