"Cooking is love you can taste.” ~ December 13th - the day we feast! The process in reverse ➡️➡️➡️ of our delicious panelle, fried chickpea fritters, in celebration of The feast of Santa Lucia. This tradition is deeply rooted in Palermo as one of the most important events of the year. Continue reading to find out more... - In 1646, during a great famine that hit the city of Palermo, Santa Lucia responded to prayers and sent a miracle: a ship full of wheat appeared in the Port of the city, bringing salvation to the citizens. Every year since, the feast of Santa Lucia has been celebrated in the city with the people vowing to God to not eat bread or flour on this day. So we celebrate with cuccia (a traditional, Sicilian dessert containing boiled wheatberries and sugar), panelle, and arancine (stuffed rice balls which are coated with bread crumbs and then deep fried). So much so, that now the day is also known as the Feast of Arancine, or St Arancina. Make the most of this day by enjoying a wide range of arancine, with lots of different flavours and shapes (sweet and savory!) that are impossible to find at any other time of year, mmm!
