MOVIE RECOMMENDATION: 8.5/10 A put upon housewife meets a suicidal radio announcer on the day of Hitler’s commemorative visit to Rome. Despite their differences in social, economic and ideological background, the two form a deep and emotional bond. A Special Day refers to the the day Hitler visited Rome to celebrate the alliance of Italy and Germany during the start of WWII. The film shows the importance of this day by devoting the first several minutes showing archival news footage of the visit, with all of Rome in attendance, wearing their finest attire and waving their flags. Then it progresses to Loren’s character, Antonietta, a middle aged housewife with an unappreciative husband and six children. She is preparing the family so they can go watch the parade - Rome has declared the visit a public holiday and there is an excitement in the air. She sees this as a day where she can be by herself and get her many chores done peacefully. However, nothing goes as planned when she meets her neighbour Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni). The two are nothing alike. And when we first meet Gabriele, he was in the process of getting his affairs in order before he commits suicide. By fate, or perhaps serendipity, the two meet. And so begins a special day for the two of them, as they form an instant emotional connection. Yet, the film isn’t your typical romance. There is love between the two, but it’s fuelled more by their mutual sadness than by sexual gratification. The film is deeply melancholic as the two characters profess their regrets, bitterness and frustration. This sadness is aided by the film’s sepia toned cinematography which also gives the film a faded romantic look. And despite its focus on the two characters, the film’s power comes from its criticism of fascism and the danger of falling mindlessly into propaganda. By the time you realise why Gabriele was feeling suicidal, it will feel like you were hit with an emotional gut punch, with the quietness and sombreness of the film’s ending serving to enhance the film’s power. It’s the reason why both Loren and Mastroianni call this film the highlight of their careers.
