Death of a genius. Duke Ellington died on Friday, May 24, 1974 at 3:10 A.M. at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, NYC. "That night he was dying, he called me in and said, 'Kisses, kisses.' I picked him up out of the bed and put him down and he said, 'More kisses.' And I picked him up and gave him more kisses, and then he looked at me as if he were taking my picture, because he was lying in bed and I was standing up and he said, 'Smile kisses.' He fixed me with a smile for all eternity and then as I was leaving the room he picked up the cross on the chair I had given him, kissed it twice and that night he took flight." #chetbaker #jazztrumpet #jazzlegend

Remembering Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974). He was an american composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra, which he led from 1923 until his death over a career spanning more than six decades. Born in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s onward and gained a national profile through his orchestra's appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. In the 1930s, his orchestra toured in Europe. Although widely considered to have been a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, Ellington embraced the phrase "beyond category" as a liberating principle and referred to his music as part of the more general category of American Music rather than to a musical genre such as jazz. Ellington melded them into the best-known orchestral unit in the history of jazz. Some members stayed with the orchestra for several decades. A master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format, Ellington wrote more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, with many of his pieces having become standards. Ellington also recorded songs written by his bandsmen, for example Juan Tizol's "Caravan", and "Perdido", which brought a Spanish tinge to big band jazz. In the early 1940s, Ellington began a nearly thirty-year collaboration with composer, arranger, pianist Billy Strayhorn, whom he called his writing and arranging companion. With Strayhorn, he composed many extended compositions, or suites, as well as additional short pieces. Ellington recorded for most American record companies of his era, performed in several films, scored several, and composed a handful of stage musicals. Ellington was noted for his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and for his eloquence and charisma. His reputation continued to rise after he died, and he was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize Special Award for music in 1999. #dukeellington #jazz #jazzmusician #legend #jazzlegend #jazzorchestra #jazzpianist #jazzbandleader

Happy heavenly birthday to Charles Earland (May 24, 1941 – December 11, 1999). He was an american jazz organist. Earland was born in Philadelphia and learned to play the saxophone in high school. He played tenor with Jimmy McGriff at the age of 17 and in 1960 formed his first group. He started playing the organ after playing with Pat Martino, and joined Lou Donaldson's band from 1968 to 1969. The group that he led from 1970, including Grover Washington, Jr., was successful, and he eventually started playing soprano saxophone and synthesizer. His hard, simmering grooves earned him the nickname "The Mighty Burner". In 1978, Earland hit the disco/club scene with a track recorded on Mercury Records called "Let The Music Play", written by Randy Muller from the funk group Brass Construction. The record was in the U.S. charts for five weeks and reached number 46 in the UK Singles Chart. With Earland's playing on synthesizer, the track also has an uncredited female vocalist. He had several moderate Billboard R&B chart hits in the mid-1970s and early '80s on Mercury and later Columbia Records. Earland traveled extensively from 1988 until his death in 1999, performing throughout the USA and abroad. One of the highlights of his latter years was playing at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1994. Among the musicians that performed with him at the Berlin Jazz Festival was the Alabama-born  Chicago resident, Zimbabu Hamilton. on the drums. Earland died in Kansas City, Missouri, of heart failure at the age of 58. #charlesearland #jazz #jazzmusician #legend #jazzlegend #jazzorganist

Have you ever heard a French Horn, Trombone and Tuba in a Jazz Nonet (9 piece band)? You haven’t heard the “Birth of The Cool” by Miles Davis. . . OCCUPATION: Trumpet player, Songwriter (1926-1991) . . DESCRIPTION: Grammy Award winner Miles Davis was a major force in the jazz world, as both a trumpet player and a bandleader . . SONGS: 1. Solar 2. So What 3. My Funny Valentine 4. Blue In Green 5. All Blues . . Instrumental in the development of jazz, Miles Davis is considered one of the top musicians of his era. Born in Illinois in 1926, he traveled at age 18 to New York City to pursue music. Throughout his life, he was at the helm of a changing concept of jazz. Winner of eight Grammy awards, Miles Davis died in 1991 from respiratory distress in Santa Monica, California. . Early Life . Davis quickly developed a talent for playing the trumpet under the private tutelage of Elwood Buchanan, a friend of his father who directed a music school. Buchanan emphasized playing the trumpet without vibrato, which was contrary to the common style used by trumpeters such as Louis Armstrong, and which would come to influence and help develop the Miles Davis style. Davis played professionally while in high school. When he was 17 years old, Davis was invited by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to join them onstage when the famed musicians realized they needed a trumpet player to replace a sick bandmate. . . Happy 83rd birthday to the legendary saxophonist Archie Shepp (born May 24, 1937). . He is one of the most articulate and original voices to emerge from the powerful connection of jazz with the civil rights movement of the ‘60s. And in the '70s, Shepp employed a fatback/swing-based R&B approach, and in the '80s he mixed straight bebop, ballads, and blues pieces displaying little of the fury and fire from his earlier days. Over the years he has evolved into being one of the revered and respected elders of jazz. . I was fortunate to see him live in concert in 2018 in London where he devised a program for the concert “Art Songs and Spirituals” which provided a contemporary resonance to serious-as-your-life moments. The setlist had standards and his original compositions such as ‘All God’s Children Got A Home In The Universe’, ‘Rest Enough’, ‘The Cry Of My People’ and ‘Things Have Got To Change’. . Filming wasn’t allowed, but I was able to capture the great appreciation of the crowd at the concert hall. . . #jazz #art #spirituals #blues #gospel #archieshepp #wearejazz @barbicancentre #livejazz @archie_shepp @londonjazzfest #civilrights #history #jazzlegend #1960s #saxophone #vocals #london #florida #ksa #riyadh #jeddah #bahrain #doha #qatar #uae #abudhabi #dubai #oman #kuwait #kuwaitcity #kuwaitjazzcafe

Often called the Charlie Parker of the piano due to the virtuosity of his improvised lines, Bud Powell is one of those names you have to know considering how many current musicians are influenced by his playing. Pianist such as Aaron Parks, Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea have all noted the playing of Bud Powell as a major influence. • One of the most unique things to consider about Bud Powell was his ability to create fluid and swinging bebop lines that demonstrated textbook voice leading reminiscent of Bach. In addition to being a master pianist, Bud Powell was also a talented composer who’s compositions have become standards among those who are well aware of the artistry that is Bud. • In this pdf, I’ve hand picked twelve lines from Bud Powell’s most iconic catalog of recordings and compiled them into one pdf for all instruments. I invite you to take these lines, internalize them, transpose them around the keys and finally improvise on them, making them your own. Tag me in your practice sessions and see you in the shed! 😎 You can find all the PDFs and more on the website store, link in the bio. As always, everything is free and I kindly accept any and all donations. Thank you! @roland_us @avid.sibelius @smugsw

Happy birthday to Richie Beirach! 🎂 Richard Beirach (born 23 May 1947) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Beirach was born in New York City. He initially studied both classical music and jazz. While still at high school, he took lessons from pianist Lennie Tristano. Beirach later entered the Berklee College of Music. After one year, he left Berklee and began attending the Manhattan School of Music. While there, he studied with Ludmilla Ulehla. In 1972, he graduated from the Manhattan School of Music with a Master's Degree in Music Theory and Composition. In 1972 Beirach began working with Stan Getz. He also worked with Chet Baker. Beirach has maintained an ongoing musical partnership with David Liebman from the late-1960s to the present in the groups Lookout Farm and Quest. In addition, Liebman and Beirach have frequently performed and recorded as a duo.Several of Beirach's compositions – "Leaving" and "Elm", for instance – have found their way into the jazz standard repertoire.Beirach's style is influenced by Art Tatum, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and his earlier classical training. It is also individualistic with many touches all its own. Remembering Rosemary Clooney on her birthday!!🌹Rosemary Clooney (May 23, 1928 – June 29, 2002) was an American singer and actress. She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the novelty hit "Come On-a My House", which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-a-Me", "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey There" and "This Ole House", although she had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney's career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction, but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star Bing Crosby asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. 🥁 JUST CREATE / DAY 10: @jazzyfreshtees revisited an idea he started years ago, totally re-illustrating it using his favoured ‘lines' aesthetic. This piece is of one of our favourite all-time musicians, the incredible Max Roach. Hopefully his dynamic vision and the way he expressed his artform are illustrated in this vivid image. #jazz #jazzrefreshed #art #artistsoninstagram #musicart #artwork #artoftheday #artchallenge #artist #illustration #graphicart #justcreate #animation #lineart #maxroach #jazzlegend #jazzdrummer #graphicdesign #ipadpro #procreate #affinitydesigner #jazzyfreshtees

JUST CREATE / DAY 10: I had a bit of time on my hands today (for once), so I revisited an idea I started years ago and totally re-illustrated it using a line aesthetic. For some reason, I love using lines and dots, which often feature in my work. This piece is of our favourite all-time musicians at @jazzrefreshed, the incredible Max Roach. Hopefully his dynamic vision and the way he expressed his artform are illustrated in this image. I kind of messed up the hands, but I’ll straighten it out at some point @jazzrefreshed #jazz #jazzrefreshed #art #artistsoninstagram #musicart #artwork #artoftheday #artchallenge #artist #illustration #graphicart #justcreate #lineart #maxroach #jazzlegend #jazzdrummer #graphicdesign #ipadpro #procreate #affinitydesigner #jazzyfreshtees

Frank Wess The Award Winner. US stereo original. Wess was a pretty descent tenor player but was mostly known for being a flute virtuoso. And for making a really cool record together with Coltrane of course. He plays both tenor and flute here. This is straight up early 50:s jazz, not too many surprises but it swings a lot. It must schwing! With Oscar Petiford, Joe Wilder, Urbie Green etc. Lots of spinning this grey and rainy day. #vinylig #vinylpost #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinyloftheday #vinylcommunitypost #vinyladdict #33rpm #jazz #jazzrecords #jazzvinyl #jazzinstagram #instajazz #jazzlegend #mainstreamrecords #frankwess #oscarpetiford #joewilder #henrycoker #jimmyjones #osiejohnson #bennypowell #urbiegreen #recordmania #bobshad

I’m giving away a FREE MONTH of lessons in either jazz improvisation or beginner jazz piano. • As you might know, I am a very active teacher and performer in @austintexasgov and online worldwide. I’m giving away a free month of lessons (four lessons total, an hour long) at random. All you have to do is follow me and comment “yeah man!” on this post! You’ll get access to all the PDFs I’ve written out , some of which are not available on the website yet. I hope I get to meet some of you soon! Thanks and see you in the shed 😎

Jazz Legend Ornette Coleman was one of the major leaders of the free jazz movement! He played a plastic saxophone, but his sound was powerful and unique. His iconic record “The Shape of Jazz to Come” made a huge impact on the jazz world! “FEELING GOOD” - JULIE LONDON and Vanilla Bean Black @davidstea. Check out: “King of the Road,” “My Kind of Town,” “Won’t Someone Please Belong to Me,” “Girl Talk,” and “Summertime.” #jazz #vocaljazz #jazzsinger #jazzlife #jazzmusic #jazzlovers #music #musiclover #julielondon #feelinggood #nowplaying #nowspinning #vinyl #vinylporn #vinylcollector #vinyligclub #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylclub #vinylgeek #jazzvinyl #vinyljunkie #recordplayer #recordclub #vanillabeanblack #davidstea #tea #jazzlegend #socialdistancing I thought this dynamic Julie London album would be appropriate for the most beautiful Saturday morning in recent memory. Backed by the great Gerald Wilson big band, this album is an absolute feast for the ears, with refreshing arrangements of classics like “Summertime” and “Feeling Good,” sung in the expected casual and classy Julie London style. This was a perfect album to enjoy from my bright and breezy balcony, with a cup of David’s new Vanilla Bean Black tea to boot!

Artie Shaw (May 23, 1910-December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. One of jazz's finest clarinetists, Artie Shaw never seemed fully satisfied with his musical life, constantly breaking up successful bands and running away from success. While Count Basie and Duke Ellington were satisfied to lead just one orchestra during the swing era, and Benny Goodman (due to illness) had two, Shaw led five, all of them distinctive and memorable. Born in New York City and growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, where he played clarinet and alto locally, Shaw spent part of 1925 with Johnny Cavallaro's dance band and then played off and on with Austin Wylie's band in Cleveland from 1927-1929 before joining Irving Aaronson's Commanders. After returning to New York, Shaw became a close associate of Willie "The Lion" Smith at jam sessions, and by 1931 was a busy studio musician. He retired from music for the first time in 1934 in hopes of writing a book, but when his money started running out, Shaw returned to New York. A major turning point occurred when he performed at an all-star big-band concert at the Imperial Theatre in May 1936, surprising the audience by performing with a string quartet and a rhythm section. He used a similar concept in putting together his first orchestra, adding a Dixieland-type front line and a vocalist while retaining the strings.
