Al morir Valdemar, le tocaría ascender a Olaf, pero en ese momento contaba solo con 8 años, por lo que su madre se encargó de asumir el trono de Dinamarca en 1375. Cinco años después, murió Haakon, pero Olaf seguía siendo muy joven para ser el rey de Noruega, por lo que también Margarita I se quedó con el trono. Olaf murió en 1387 a los 17 años. Haakon había sido también co-rey de Suecia, por lo que también Margarita no dudó en reclamar su soberanía. Pero esta vez debió enfrentarse a Alberto III de Macklemburgo, al cual terminó derrotando en 1389, con el apoyo de la nobleza local. Finalmente en 1397 se fundó la Unión de Kalmar. Luego de la muerte de Margarita I, que no se había casado de nuevo y no había tenido más hijos, los siguientes reyes de Kalmar fueron mucho más incompetentes que su predecesora, llevando a la unión a la crisis económica y nuevamente a la separación de las monarquías. En el año 1523, Gustavo Vasa fue nombrado rey de Suecia y Federico I ascendió como rey de Dinamarca, para ese entonces Noruega ya estaba fusionado con Dinamarca. Norway. The History of Norway begins with a collection of scattered bands of Nordic Vikings which were only united as what would be considered Norway by Harald Fairhair in 870. Raids on Frankish and British Isles brought Christianity to Norwegian Vikings. Slowly a full conversion took place within Norway. Olav Haraldsson, starting in 1015, made the "things," governmental assemblies pass church laws, destroyed heathen hofs, built churches and created an institution of priests. From then on until 1130 peace reigned, until a civil war over succession issues. The wars ended in 1217 with the appointment of Håkon Håkonsson, who introduced a definite law of succession. Once again, Norway strived and the 13th century was even called the Norwegian Golden Age. This prosperity came to an abrupt end in 1329 when the Black Death arrived in Norway. The population drastically reduced, with almost a third of the people succumbing. In 1380 Olaf Haakonsson inherited the thrones of both Norway and Denmark and created a union, this union eventually evolved into the Kalmar Union with Sweden in 1397. Norway remained under Danish rule, slowly growing its economy until 1813, where Following defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the Crown Prince of Denmark-Norway and resident viceroy in Norway, Christian Frederik, began a Norwegian independence movement. A constitution was set in place which split the nation’s power between a King, and a new Parliamentary body on May 17, 1814. The country strived from then on until 1940 When Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway until the end of the war. Kalmar Union The #KalmarUnion or Union of #Kalmaris ( #Danish, #Norwegian and #Swedish: #Kalmarunionen) was a personal union that from 1397 to 1523 joined under a single monarch the three kingdoms of #Denmark, #Sweden (then including most of #Finland's populated areas), and #Norway, together with Norway's overseas dependencies (then including #Iceland, #Greenland, the #FaroeIslands and the #NorthernIsles). The #union was not quite continuous; there were several short interruptions. Legally the #countries remained separate sovereign states, but with their domestic and foreign policies being directed by a common monarch. One main impetus for its formation was to block German expansion northward into the #Baltic region. The main reason for its failure to survive was the perpetual struggle between the monarch, who wanted a strong unified state, and the Swedish and Danish nobility which did not. Diverging interests (especially the Swedish nobility's dissatisfaction with the dominant role played by Denmark and #Holstein) gave rise to a conflict that would hamper the union in several intervals from the 1430s until its definitive breakup in 1523 when Gustav Vasa became king of Sweden. Norway continued to remain a part of the realm of Denmark–Norway under the #Oldenburg dynasty for nearly three centuries until its dissolution in 1814. Then Union between Sweden and Norway lasted until 1905, when a grandson of the incumbent king of Denmark was elected its king, whose direct descendants still reign in Norway.

Sten Sture the Younger, born 1493. Lord regent of Sweden. Son and heir of the great magnate and lord regent Svante Nilsson. Knighted at the age of six. Fought under his fathers banners against the Danish king Hans. Succeeded as a lord regent in 1512. Continued his fathers nationalist policies successfully defending the realm against Danish incursions. Banned by the pope for forcefully deposing the pro-Danish archbishop of Uppsala in 1517. Got his left leg shattered by a cannon ball at the battle of Åsunden on January 19, 1520. Died from the wound while traveling against Stockholm on February 3, 1520. Deposed as Queen of Sweden twice (1448 and 1468). A fervent supporter of King Christian in his efforts to retake the Swedish throne. ~ Margarert I of Denmark and the Kalmar Union ~ Margaret I was regent of Denmark (from 1375), of Norway (from 1380), and of Sweden (from 1389), who, by diplomacy and war, pursued dynastic policies that led to the Kalmar Union (1397), which united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden until 1523 and Denmark and Norway until 1814. Her heir, Erik of Pomerania, was proclaimed king of Norway in 1389 and was elected king of Denmark and Sweden (included Finland) in 1396. His coronation took place in Kalmar, in the presence of the leading figures of all the Scandinavian countries. The nobility manifested its opposition to Margaret’s absolute power. The two extant documents disclose traces of the struggle between two political principles: the principle of absolute hereditary monarchy, as expressed in the so-called coronation act, and the constitutional elective kingship preferred by some nobles, as expressed in the so-called union act. The Kalmar assembly was a victory. Despite Erik’s coronation, Margaret remained Scandinavia’s actual ruler. Her aim was to further develop a strong royal central power and to foster the growth of a united Scandinavian state with its centre of gravity located in Denmark, her old hereditary dominion. She succeeded in eliminating the opposition of the nobility, in curbing the powers of the council of state, and in consolidating the administration through a network of royal sheriffs. In order to secure her position economically, she levied heavy taxes and confiscated church estates. Margaret’s political acumen was also evident in foreign affairs. Her main goals were to put an end to German expansion. An armed conflict did, however, break out with Holstein. One of Scandinavia’s most eminent monarchs, Margaret was able to establish peace in her realms and maintain her authority against the aspirations of German princes and against the superior economic power of the Hanseatic League. The Battle of Bogesund was an important conflict in the campaign of Christian II to gain power over Sweden. In 1520, Christian's army of mercenaries had landed in Sweden, seeking to consolidate Christian's powers over Sweden within the Kalmar Union and to unseat the rebellious Swedish viceroy Sten Sture the Younger. On the ice of lake Åsunden near Bogesund, Christian's army led by Otte Krumpen was intercepted by a force led by Sten Sture. Little is known of the details of the battle. At an early stage, a cannonball ricochetted off the ice, hitting Sten Sture in the leg and killing his horse. Deprived of their leadership, Sture's forces (mostly armed peasants) fell into disarray and fled. Sture himself retreated towards Stockholm, but died of his wounds on the ice of lake Mälaren on February 5.
