A shout-out to our ‘adopted’ cutie, the oh-so-smart Jelapat. Another rescued orphan orang utan, here he is at nest-building class. When he returns to the wild one day- his natural home- he will need to know how to build a nest in the treetops in which where he can rest and hide away from danger. Without his mum to teach him these necessary skills, he learns by watching and then copying his ‘babysitters’ at the Borneo Orang Utan Survival Foundation (BOSF). . . First, you have to watch closely how it’s done. Then you rummage around for the nicest, softest leaves. Next, selecting sturdy branches is essential as everyone knows the importance of a good foundation. Does the new nest pass the ‘bottom test’? If it does, then you can sit back and relax. Phew! This nest-building is quite a day’s work for a little orang utan! . . If you would like to learn more about the marvellous work done by BOSF please visit http://orangutan.or.id You can also watch the heart warming ‘Orang Utan Jungle School’ series on TV if it’s showing in your county. (Alert: The programme is seriously addictive!) You can also adopt a baby orang utan. Little orphan orang utans, like Josh, are sometimes found so emaciated they have to be bottled fed and carefully nurtured by ‘babysitters’ at the Borneo Orang Utan Survival Foundation (BOSF). Mummy orang utans are highly unlikely to abandon their babies so they were probably killed by illegal poachers or smugglers who harm or kill orang utans with alarming frequency. Little Josh was found severely underweight and with a broken wrist but, with the TLC he received, he is one of the lucky ones who will undergo jungle school training so that one day he can be released back to his natural home in the wild forest - where he belongs. It can take up to 10 years or more before orphan orang utans learn all the skills they need to survive. During this time, the dedicated BOSF team works tirelessly and with true love and passion to enable this to happen. If you would like to learn more about the marvellous work done by BOSF, please visit http://orangutan.or.id You can also watch the heart warming ‘Orang Utan Jungle School’ series on TV if it’s showing in your county. A Week of: Orchids Weird and Wonderful ‘Psychopsis Mariposa Three Lip’: a mouthful of a name for such a pretty orchid. Also known as the ‘Giraffe Orchid’, this little gem blooms for between 6 weeks to 3 months and will produce flowers on the same spike for years! Apparently, it grows and blooms easily in a living room but I imagine it would have to have 24/7 air-conditioning here in the tropics for it to be happy. . . . . . . #orchids #psychopsismariposathreelip #coolhighlands #gardensbythebay #andeanorchids #cloudforestdome #igsg #lovesingapore #madaboutsingapore #singaporeinsiders #unusualflowers #instasg #singaporetoday #singaporetimes #karenmadesingapore #nature #postcardsfromaroundtheword #traveldiary #traveladdict #travel #natureza #fleur #orchidaceae #orchidee #orquidea

A Week of: Orchids Weird and Wonderful Growing up in Singapore I assumed orchids were the easiest of flowers to grow. They seemed to be everywhere, bloomed throughout the year, and gamely braved the energy-zapping heat and humidity of the tropics. It was only a few years ago I discovered that some orchids actually preferred the cool mist-laden cloud forests of mountain ranges. Last year, a range of weird and wonderful Andean orchid gems were exhibited at Gardens by the Bay. Some were odd looking, scary even, but they were all striking to say the least! How marvellous to be able to see and learn about these shy and delicate beauties without first having to scale the Ecuadoran heights... . . . . . . #orchids #masdevalliamachupicchu #gardensbythebay #andes #cloudforestdome #igsg #lovesingapore #madaboutsingapore #singaporeinsiders #unusualflowers #instasg #singaporetoday #singaporetimes #nature #postcardsfromaroundtheword #traveldiary #traveladdict #travel #natureza #fleur #orchidaceae #orchidee #orquideas #orchidsofinstagram #karenmadesingapore

Iconic, award-winning, ground-breaking: Singapore certainly has no shortage of modern ‘wow’ architecture. Like the stunning Flower Dome of Gardens by the Bay, for example. Hundreds of glass envelopes and external towers of concrete form an incredible column-free interior stunning in size, scale and sustainability. You’ll leave the Flower Dome not only inspired by its daring architecture, the beauty and diversity of nature but you’ll be equally moved by the need to protect it for future generations. As Singapore celebrates its Bicentennial, nowhere is the breakneck speed of change and development in the young city seen more clearly than in its architecture. As a child growing up in Singapore, I remember holding my breath till I was blue in the face if I had to walk along the Singapore River. Its sluggish murky green waters were crammed with dilapidated bumboats, rotting trash and sometimes even dead cats. The warehouses were busy places full of hot sweaty men so it was best to scoot out of their way. Today, the river is no longer that dirty ribbon of water; the warehouses are almost swallowed by glass and steel towers that glitter with a million lights in the night. Different times, different people but the same determined desire and drive for a better future continues. . . . . #iLightsingapore #iLightbicentennialedition #civicdistrict #downtownsingapore #singaporehistory #whatsonsingapore #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #visitsingapore #singaporeinsiders #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #celebrations #architecture #worldplaces #aroundtheworld #coolcities #singaporeriver #skyscrapers #oldandnew #singaporetoday

Exotic, elegant, orchids are the queen of tropical flowers. In ancient Greece, they symbolised virility. Beautiful, yes! But did you also know #chrysanthemums are considered ‘auspicious’ as they are symbolise many things in Chinese culture? Bright golden yellow blooms foretell of prosperity and good luck to come. They are also said to symbolise longevity, so making them especially popular for gifts to wish another a long and healthy life and for family and friends who are recovering from an illness. These powers of recovery are also believed by feng shui masters to extend to helping people cure their addictions, be it from gambling, debt or other such evils. And, of course, if all this symbolism is making you quite dizzy, chrysanthemum tea is a calming drink that will cure you of bodily toxins while you sip and breathe! . . . . #nature #natur #natureza #chinesenewyear #auspiciousfloqers #yellow #fengshui #Chinesebeliefs #chinesetraditions #whatsonsingapore #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #celebrations #chineseculture #worldplaces #aroundtheworld

A family of eight enormous pigs welcome shoppers and visitors to Chinatown. The pig-themed lanterns are made of silk and wire. The tallest one grins down at iPhone snappers from his lofty 12-metre high perch atop a purse overflowing with coins, symbols of good luck and abundance. Chinese New Year, which falls on 5 Feb, begins a new year, this one being the ‘Year of the Pig’. Those born in the years 1947, 1958, 1971, 1985, 1995 and 2019 are ‘pig’ people and are said to be sociable, easy going, foodie types and loyal to their friends. These jade green twisting stalks, being snapped up at the bazaar in Chinatown right now, are called ‘lucky bamboo’ and are said to bring good ‘feng shui’ - good luck and fortune - especially if given as gifts. Most of the lucky bamboo is shipped in from Taiwan and China. Shaping them to twist and spiral in this way is a laborious and patience-building process! The plants are placed under a three sided box and, as they grow towards the light, they create a bend. They are carefully rotated about an inch each time to create more and more such bends in the stems. Fortunately, given all that effort, they are very long lasting and can survive in vases of just water for a long time. Round the back, I saw boxes of more lucky bamboo the stall owner said had been air flown in yesterday. Such is the demand... . . . . #chinatownsingapore #chinesenewyear #auspiciousplants #luckybamboo #spirals #fengshui #Chinesebeliefs #chinesetraditions #whatsonsingapore #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #traveler #visitsingapore #celebrations #chineseculture #worldplaces #aroundtheworld

The brilliantly red coxcomb plant, Celosia argentea, is one of the ‘auspicious’ must-have plants during Chinese New Year. Its chilli red flowers are said to resemble the coxcomb of the rooster and the Chinese name for the plant actually means ‘rooster’. Roosters are well regarded by the Chinese, who believe that their crowing at dawn everyday wards off evil and bad luck. The Chinese word for ‘rooster’ also rhymes with the word for ‘luck’, making this plant even more auspicious. And, as the shape of the flowers resemble the hats of high-ranking officials in China in days gone past, continued success and career promotion could well come in the new year. With the promise of so much good fortune, combined with its vivid looks, why would you not have some coxcomb plants to usher in Chinese New Year? . . . . #chinesenewyear #auspiciousplants #celosiaargenteacristata #coxcomb #chinesebeliefs #chinesetradition #whatsonsingapore #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #traveler #visitsingapore #celebrations #chineseculture #worldplaces #aroundtheworld

Jan 28, 2019. Singapore Today marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of modern Singapore. And as much as I love the progress we’ve made, I remember the happy days of my childhood depicted in this mural. When neighbors relaxed outdoors in the evening after dinner to catch up and ‘makan angin’ (catch the breeze’); ‘congkak’ slippers would be strewn carelessly under the table; Uncle’s white singlet would be rolled up over his contentedly expanding belly; there’d be plenty of fruit and goodies for all to share; hot chrysanthemum tea in a flask would snuggle in a basket to keep warm; and multi-coloured animal-shaped lanterns made of flimsy cellophane to parade about the neighbourhood with would be promised in return for good grades at school. How I miss those relaxed easy days and nights when everyone knew everyone in the street and I always felt I would never come to any harm with so many people looking out for this nine old child. * Mural by Yip Yew Chong . . . . #traditionalsingapore #yipyewchong #muralart #chinatownsingapore #singaporehistory #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #singaporebicentennial #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #oldsingapore #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #traveler #visitsingapore #singaporetimes #thewaywewere #littlereddot #streetart #theartofstorytelling #ilovesingapore

One of the best things about living in a multicultural city is the ability to see and learn about diverse cultures first hand. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) shops in Chinatown sell a range of dried animals and herbs that may look strange and unfamiliar to many but have used by the Chinese for centuries to cure a wide range of ailments. These tokay geckos are believed to cure coughs, asthma and TB. The lizards are gutted and dried and when prescribed, are either boiled in soups, ground to a powder, or soaked in wine and roasted. In all honesty, I’d have to get my head around taking dried geckos for a medical complaint but I’m sure it is just what you are brought up with. . . . . #traditionalchinesemedicine #driedgecko #chinesemedicine #traditionalremedies #chinatown #whatsonsingapore #madaboutsingapore #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #chinesetraditions #postcardsfromaroundtheworld #learnsomethingneweveryday #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #travelers #visitsingapore #singaporetimes #diversity

Do you like our new ‘Golden Carp in Water Lily Pond’ stretch canvas? The scene was taken at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. To the Chinese, carp (or koi) symbolize ‘abundance’ and ‘affluence’. The Chinese word for ‘fish’ is homophonic for abundance. Their bright orange colour resembles gold, and so carp are regarded as especially auspicious. A perfect gift for Chinese New Year. Or maybe you want to add good ‘feng shui’ in your own home or just reflect on this beautifully calming scene. Paper lanterns originated during the Han dynasty (25-220) and were traditionally used as lamps. Lanterns were made either of paper or silk, with wooden frames made of bamboo or other types of wood. Palace lanterns were more exquisite and usually made of metal, glass and silk. They often featured elegant pictures of the court or auspicious animals such as the phoenix and dragon. In days gone by, lanterns were also used to indicate the homes of the wealthy and prominent, and were placed outside doorways and entrances. For additional luck and protection, they would also include images of deities on them. With our electric-lit homes, today’s lanterns are more festive in use, often during occasions like the Lantern Festival and Chinese New Year. . . . . #chinoiserie #chinesedesign #chineselanterns #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #chinesenewyear #homeandlifestyle #chinesehistory #singaporetimes #chinesetraditions #traveldiary #travel #aroundtheworld #malacca #chinese #auspicious #traditions #shophouses #chinesestyle

Exquisite ‘kolam’ decorations, made of rice flour, mark the entrances of restaurants in Little India in celebration of the Tamil harvest festival, called Pongal. . . . . #pongal #indianculture #littleindiasingapore #tradition #harvestcelebration #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #madeinsingapore #singaporehistory #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #allaboutsingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #traveler #visitsingapore #festive

The centuries-old Tamil tradition of harvest celebrations, called ‘Pongal’ came alive in Little India yesterday. Buildings were decorated with traditional banana and sugarcane leaves; rows of colourful earthenware pots for boiling pongal were on sale; plates of sweetened rice and bananas were generously distributed to all visitors yesterday. Cows bedecked with garlands and bells chewed on languidly and stared back at the people staring at them (the live animals were probably a Pongal first this year!). A group of adorable children, dressed in their colorful Pongal best, entertained a small crowd in the evening. The celebratory air continued well into the evening when the festive lights across Serangoon Road added a festive glow to the agarian decorations. In Little India yesterday, Pongal embodied the best of thanksgiving celebrations: food was plentiful, people were smiling and happy, and everyone was welcomed and included. . . . #pongal #indianculture #littleindiasingapore #tradition #harvestcelebration #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #allaboutsingapore #destinasian #traveldiary #traveladdict #travelgram #singaporetimes #colourful #tamilculture #littlereddot #cow #nightlights #festive

Seeing red as the days whizz up to Chinese New Year! In Chinese culture, red is the colour of happiness and celebration, ushering in good luck and prosperity. In Chinatown, stores like this offer plenty of auspicious symbols to decorate your home with. But did you know there actually are occasions where red is frowned upon? Never ever wear red to a funeral. And recently, a friend told me never to write a person’s name in red. It’s bad luck of the most dire kind. Now you know too. . . . . #chinoiserie #red #chinesenewyear #chinatownsg #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #singaporesouvenirs #singaporegifts #localmementoes #madeinsingapore #supportlocalsg #chinatownsingapore #madaboutsingapore #localgifts #singaporehistory #singaporetimes #instasg #Instasingapore #auspicious #chinesetradition #travelgram #traveldiary #littlereddot #chineseculture

Iconic Chinatown: where old shophouses gaze uneasily at the brash new blocks rising all around threatening to block out the sky. ‘Ah!,’ they say, ‘what stories we could tell of the people who walked these streets - of hard working traders from all corners of the world, looking to make their fortunes, peddling their wares from silks to spices, of women trapped and lonely, people looking for a new home in a foreign land, terrified by the strangeness of it all yet excited by opportunity. If only you would stop and listen...’ . . . . #chinatown #shophouses #oldandnew #chinesenewyear #singaporeicons #karenmadesingapore #singaporeinsiders #singaporesouvenirs #madaboutsingapore #madeinsingapore #singaporehistory #singaporetimes #instasg #singaporeinsta #allaboutsingapore #singaporebicentennial #architecture

Did you know the five-foot way (‘kaki lima’ in Malay, ‘gor kar kee’ in Hokkien), the unique verandah linking many of our historic shophouses, was first proposed by Sir Stamford Raffles in his Town Plan for Singapore in 1822? This architectural feature was to form a common boundary with the road and protect pedestrians from the harsh tropical sun and rain. Although they were called five-foot ways, the verandahs were not always uniform in width but varied in size, according to the age, size and function of the building. By the 1870s, hawkers and small traders had began plying their wares along the five-foot ways, causing congestion and chaos. The British Government’s methods to clear the crowded walkways and streets were harsh and resulted in resentment, and eventually led to the ‘Verandah Riots’ in 1888. Prominent Chinese community leaders had to help the government quell the social unrest. But the walkways continued to be occupied by small-time entrepreneurs, peddling trades like key making, fortune telling, shoe repair, letter writing and traditional medicine. In time, many of these small operators could no longer make a living and all but disappeared. The five-foot ways were the precursor of the common corridors on the ground floor of our early HBB (Housing and Development) flats. Ceramic tiles like these were so loved and so extensively used by Peranakan families to decorate their homes that today, we even refer to them as ‘Peranakan tiles’. Introduced by the British, Peranakan families used these tiles to adorn both the interior and and exteriors of their homes as a sign of their wealth and affluence. Externally, these pretty tiles were to be found on gate posts and courtyards, and internally, in bathrooms and wash stands. Because they were made of ceramic by skills craftsmen and glazed, they were durable and could withstand the harsh tropical elements outdoors. Motifs of flowers, fruit and animals were popular, especially those considered ‘auspicious’. In the 70s and 80s, many prewar shophouses throughout the city were demolished to make way for newer developments and the tiles were destroyed. Thankfully though, some of these exquisite tiles still remain in Emerald Hill (and other parts of the city). They may be somewhat faded or chipped around the edges but they still whisper of a time when beauty and elegance reigned. This is our tribute to one of Singapore’s much-loved places - Emerald Hill. Did you know the area, originally thick with primary rain forest, was planted with pepper and gambier plantations in the 1800s by Chinese immigrants? Then ‘nutmeg mania’ tool over; at its its peak, over 56,000 nutmeg trees were grown in Orchard Road, only to be decimated by the local beetle in the 1850s. After this, shophouses were built on the land and the area became the enclave of wealthy Peranakan families. Many of the homes were sold off once the wealthy patriarch of the family passed on, but today some still remain in private ownership, while others are rented by the fortunate few. Traditional architectural features can still be seen, like the Chinese baroque style, ‘pintu pagar’, five-foot walkway and exquisite tiles. Follow us over the next few days as we feature a few of these beautiful details. Every year when visiting Chinese friends during Chinese New Year, we’ve always wanted to bring along a small thoughtful gift, in addition to the traditional hong baos and Mandarin oranges. Something different, but inexpensive, and frankly, it’s always been a struggle to find anything suitable. This year, we’ve cracked it! These washable cotton canvas bags are just perfect. Practical, wallet-friendly, planet-saving and in auspicious red. All boxes ticked! Yes, we know hong baos are traditional at Chinese New Year but this year, why not be a little different and surprise those you visit with a beautiful collage of red and gold orchids? Orchids personify refinement, luxury and purity and are particularly auspicious flowers as they symbolise fertility (many children) and abundance. Our collage is printed on textured fine art paper which brings out their vibrant colours and delicate beauty. The archival grade paper is guaranteed for 25 years. Customised sizes are available. ‘Baby-sitter’ Letha of the Borneo Orang utan Survival Foundation (BOSF) teaching little orphan orang utan, Timpah, how to scoop up water using her hands and implements like coconut husks that she might find in the jungle. Such skills are essential to orang utans’ survival when they are eventually released into the wild. With no mother to teach them, the staff have to show the little orphans to do and they learn by watching and copying. It was truly heartwarming to see the obvious affection between the orang utan and her babysitter as she tries to give her a kiss, orang utan style, afterwards! How many people can say they’ve had such an impactful day at the office? If you would like to learn more about the marvellous work done by BOSF please visit http://orangutan.or.id You can watch the heart warming ‘Orang Utan Jungle School’ series on TV if it’s showing in your county. You can also adopt a baby orang utan.
