Today I am heading to Science World to see The Great Bear Rainforest movie. Sept 2019 I had the privilege to accompany Dr. Wayne McCrory et al to the home of the Spirit Bear. I just dug out my photos of that precious time. No digital photography no high res zoom lens - nothing fancy - just some biologists, bear lovers and Lucy the Bear dog. Here are a few of my photos. #spiritbear #ryanreynolds #thegreatbearrainforestmovie #thegreatbearrainforest #kermodebear

Donโ€™t be fooled by the cream-coloured coat; thatโ€™s no polar bear. A Kermode or โ€œspiritโ€ bear, is a subspecies of the North American black bear. It owes its colouring to a rare genetic mutation, and can be found in British Columbiaโ€™s Great Bear Rainforest. Filmmaker Ian McAllister is behind a new documentary called "Great Bear Rainforestโ€”Land of the Spirit Bear," out now in IMAX theatres. What's going on in this photo between man and the bear with a doleful gaze? ""Good Morning"" This sleeping bear is a Kermode, one of the rarest bears in the world. In fact, itโ€™s a black bear with white, creamy fur, which is produced by a recessive gene. On this particular occasion, we followed this young male nicknamed โ€œMushroomโ€ while he was fishing along a small river. Once his belly was full, he settled for a nap on a beautiful mossy log. Despite the fading evening light, we decided to approach. From time to time heโ€™d open his eyes and glance at us, but he never showed any sign of fear or anxiety. We got so close we could hear him breathing. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Photo by @DaisyGilardini // Bears simply love salmon roe. During the fall salmon run, they often dive headfirst into the river to lick up salmon eggs from under the rocks. As they re-emerge, they shake off the water trapped in their fur. Timing and shutter speed are crucial. If you succeed at freezing the action, though, the results can be really cool. The Kermode or โ€œSpirit bearโ€ as First Nations people know them, is one of the worldโ€™s rarest bears. A subspecies of the North American black bear, the Kermode has white or cream-coloured fur, due to a unique recessive gene. Photo by @DaisyGilardini // My first encounter with a spirit bear happened in 2011 in the Great Bear Rainforest - British Columbia - Canada After spending all day waiting by the river, we finally saw some movement in the forest. I had a lump in my throat when I saw this mama bear with her black cub appearing like a ghost out of the forest. It was a really mystical experience, and I was super excited. They were moving fast, as if they were on a mission, and it was challenging to keep up with them. So we decided to jump on the boat and follow them along the bank. It was low tide and we soon found out what they were after. When the tide is low, barnacles and mussels on rocks and dead trees are suddenly exposed, and thatโ€™s the bears' favourite snack! Like happy hour crunchy potato chips are for us. Photo by @daisygilardini //After all day waiting at the river's edge in the rain, we finally saw some movement in the forest. I felt a lump rise in my throat when this spirit bear appeared like a ghost out of the forest. A really emotional and mystical experience. Recent studies suggest coastal bears survived through the last glacial era. Their white fur probably served as camouflage. The recessive gene has survived to this day, due to the isolation of British Columbiaโ€™s coastal islands. Contrary to what many people think, bears are not great fishermen. Their success rate is only around 25%, one in four. Interestingly, studies have shown that spirit bears' white coat is less visible to salmon in daylight. This gives them a slight advantage while fishing, and raises their success rate to 30%, nearly one in three. This makes it easier for them to gain the fat reserves necessary for hibernation. It might also explain why the gene has not receded over time. Hereโ€™s my newest work in progress oil painting! Iโ€™ve been a bit rusty getting back into oil paints, but slowly remembering my techniques again! Pictured are 2 Spirit Bears (Kermode Bears) near a crystal filled waterfall in British Columbia! ๐ŸŒฟโœจ itโ€™s interesting, Iโ€™ve never been to British Columbia but I feel a connection to there & a desire to travel there. I keep hearing about it in the most random of ways and I have this feeling about it. I tend to go deep into my imagination sometimes, and I can actually close my eyes and feel, hear, and see this place so clearly! Traveling there one day is a must! Maybe painting the area will bring that closer to a reality! Recently Iโ€™ve been getting clearer about my direction in art. I did a free training by @devonwalzart recently, โ€œbecoming more of you in your artโ€. We sunk into our own essence and wrote down words that reflect our truest essence. Within my truest form I feel the words that reflect me the most are sensitive, vulnerable, full of wonder, believer in magic, watery heart, lover of exploration, dreamer, passionate, fearful, lover of beauty. We then went into a visualization to see what came up visually in relation to that. I experienced many different feelings and sights. I saw the sight/sound/smell of rain, moist forest ground, moody colors, lush forest, moss, and fertile ground. I feel in some way these visuals I experienced reflect whatโ€™s authentic to me in expressing my heart and soul right now. Somehow I felt it made perfect sense. Something about dense lush misty and mossy forest reflect these words back to me. The forest has this sense of wonder and unknown within it. Itโ€™s beautifully captivating yet terrifying at the same time. It is full of passion and wonder and magic, endless exploration is possible within the forest. The colors, sight, and feeling of these things fully convey something within me. Maybe you get it, maybe you donโ€™t, I hope my work will show you! at Mount Shasta, California

Did you know? The unique appearance of the Kermode, or Spirit Bear, is caused by a rare gene that causes a black bearโ€™s coat to be a warm shade of white. Though they seem to stand out, researchers determined that the Kermode Bears are almost twice as effective at fishing for salmon - because the salmon are less likely to see them! ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿ’— ๐Ÿ˜Ž _ โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ € #KermodeBear #JoyfulBears #BlackBear #SpiritBear #Bear #WildlifePhotography #Instagood #PicOfTheDay #PhotoOfTheDay #BearArt #BearPainting #BearFacts #DidYouKnow #Facts #AnimalFacts #CuteCub #SuperSpecial #LearnEveryDay #WeLoveBears #OilPainting #ArtistsOnInstagram #CoolFacts #Wildlife_Shots #ExploreBC #GreatBearRainforest #GreatBear #CelebrationOfFineArt #WildlifeInspo #WildlifeInspiration at Great Bear Rainforest

Photo by @DaisyGilardini // The best time to observe the elusive Kermode bear is in September, during the salmon run. At this time of year, bears gather along the river banks to gorge themselves on fish in order to build up the reserves necessary for winter hibernation. โ € They are particularly keen on salmon roe. Towards the end of the season, if they catch a male salmon, they wonโ€™t even bite โ€” they just let it go. In this particular moment, the bear bit down firmly on a salmon, squeezing out the roe in a powerful spurt. It happened so quickly, I didnโ€™t see it happen at the time. Later that evening, while reviewing my images, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great action shot! โ € #bear #spiritbear #kermodebear #greatbearrainforest #conservation #canada #britishcolumbia #wildlifephotography

Top encounters of 2018, Part 2 if 2 During Simonโ€™s successful two decade-long, Spirit Bear Youth Coalition-led campaign to help save the bear, he was able to work with government and independent scientists to help identify the history of the Kermode gene. One of the interesting facts discovered through this research was that a white fur gene once existed throughout North America thousands of years ago, but gradually disappeared as snow and ice became less prevalent across the continent. In the Great Bear Rainforest, the white fur provides an adaptive advantage over other bears, as the spirit bear is more camouflaged in the rapids of streams where the salmon spawn. As a result, the gene not only persisted, but evolved the genetics of both the black and white bears in the region, creating the unique subspecies. In addition to albino bears (of which the spirit bear is not), it is still possible for a white black bear to be born anywhere in North America. Though exceedingly rare (itโ€™s the result of a now mostly dormant gene reappearing), itโ€™s essentially a genetic blip โ€“ meaning its unlikely to reoccur through reproduction and it no longer has any relation to the modern Kermode gene. Yet for every rare case of a true white (non-albino, non-Kermode) bear occurring in places like Manitoba or Pennsylvania, there are dozens of falsely reported โ€˜whiteโ€™ bears that are actually just beautiful โ€“ if not genetically unique โ€“ colour phases. This particular white bear is not a Kermode bear, but might be the product of the now dormant gene that was once connected to the now-famed subspecies. Unlike blond black bears we've seen in Waterton and other parts of the Canadian Rockies, this sighting is special and rare. And to have three cubs of potentially different ages? Well it's a mystery we're working to unravel and a case that is almost unprecedented. It's encounters like this one that remind us how much our society still doesn't know about nature, offering hope that we will find a better way yet to coexist with the creatures that help sustain the systems that sustain us.

Top encounters of 2018, Part 1 if 2 In June, we were incredibly fortunate to document a mixed black bear family unlike any we've ever observed. What made them so special? One cub was double the size of the other two. Yes, runts happen, but the size discrepancy is too big for it to be chalked up to malnourished cubs, especially given the time of year we found them. One of our theories - and researchers we work with agree it's possible - is that the sow adopted a cub from another bear (most likely a relative). Sound impossible? Well, consider that it's been documented several times before with Grand Teton grizzly bear 610 adopting cubs from 399, her mom. In fact, another Yellowstone grizzly sow also adopted her mother's cubs. Scientists believe that the declining health of the elder sows meant that they couldn't raise the cubs successfully, forcing them to lean on sows from previous litters (and showcasing the strong familial ties between bears, disrupting many commonly held beliefs about bruins). Our other theory is that the black bear sow mated two years in a row and kept both sets of cubs. This is highly unusual, as sows run their cubs off prior to mating - or a male bear will kill cubs to advance mating behaviour. What might have happened in this scenario? The sow might have encountered a boar and treed her cub for its protection, but felt the need to mate to ensure her cub's survival. We haven't been able to find documentation of this happening elsewhere, but we're searching. Then there is the bear family's other remarkable feature: their colouration. The sow is cinnamon and she has two black cubs and one white cub. How does that work? Well, weโ€™ve written about the genetics of both white and blond black bears before, but we will refresh your memory. True Kermode or spirit bears are a genetically unique subspecies of the black bear that are found only on Canadaโ€™s west coast. In this area, one out of every ten black bears are born with a unique gene that makes their fur white.

@gerryvanderwalt

The Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear, is a rare subspecies of the American black bear living in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia, Can While most Kermode bears are black, there are between 100 and 500 fully white individuals White Kermode bears are not albinos as they still have pigmented skin and eyes. Rather, a single, non-synonymous nucleotide substitution in the MC1R gene causes melanin to not be produced. This mutant gene is recessive, so Kermode bears with two copies of this mutant, nonfunctional gene appear white, while bears with one copy or no copies appear black it is possible for two black bears to mate and produce a white cub if both of these black bears are heterozygous, carrying one copy of the mutant MC1R gene, and both mutant genes are inherited by the cub. Kermode bears are omnivorous for most of the year, subsisting mainly on herbage and berries except during autumn salmon migrations, when they become obligate predators. During the day, white bears are 35% more successful than black bears in capturing salmon. Scientists have also found that salmon evade large, black models about twice as frequently as they evade large white models, giving white bears an advantage in salmon hunting. The white fur of the bear is harder to spot under water by fish than black fur is, so the bear can catch fish easier. On some islands, white Kermode bears have more marine derived nutrients in their fur, indicating that white Kermode bears eat more salmon than the black Kermode bears. Although the Kermode bear is not listed as an endangered species, there have been considerable conservation efforts to maintain the rare subspecies' population due to the bear's cultural significance. The main threats to the bear include habitat destruction due to oil pipelines and trophy hunting of black bears. . . . #WildEyeSA #BritishColumbia #Canada #Bear #KermodeBear #SpiritBear #GreatBearRainforest #JoinMeIn2020 #ExpeditionLeader #TourLeader #Adventure #BucketList #britishcolumbiawildlife #BC #Travel #TheMoreYouKnowTheBetterItGets at Great Bear Rainforest

Sprit Bear Watercolor on 11x14โ€ watercolor paper I waited to post this commission because it was given as a birthday gift from Chantal to her boyfriend for his December birthday. He loved it! Iโ€™ll post a picture later of how it was matted and framed. The Kermode bear is a rare subspecies of the black bear and only 100-500 of them are fully white. Their fur is white on the tips of the fur, but an orange color is revealed depending on how they move, making them look kind of shimmery! I loved the challenge of trying to capture that shimmery look.

Ok so I pulled my fav 9 images which truly reflects my accomplishments of 2018. My Mother at 88 is always a great subject along with our dogs.Sadly my daughter lost her Doodle (black one) Xi'an, this summer due to her deteriorated health but our Finn continues to be the source of hjinxs.My son just because and partner Dr M.D.Hay (who just retired from pediatrics) and my brother &sister in love, who married this summer are 3 highlights.Then it was 2 major photography projects.The Firefighters calender and a 10 page spread in #TheLancet - a medical journal out of Oxford, England, that Dr Nadine Caron and I worked on and later received an award for.Lastly i took a trip to meet up with friends @kuijpers_peter up north to Stewart BC and happened to cross paths with the elusive spirit bear #kermodebear in Terrace. There are lots of clients as a portrait photographer i could put up but more than 9 so just know i appreciate all of you too.
