This morning we visited one of our dear landowners in Bayfield. Marikay is passionate about protecting pollinators and conserving wildlife on her 40-acre property. Her efforts have paid off: her land is home to native bees, butterflies, leopard frogs, the prairie falcon (we saw a huge nest!), and many other species. Protecting pollinators also have many economic benefits: Pollinators, including bees, flies, beetles and moths, help in the production of nearly 75 percent of crops and roughly 80 percent of all flowering plants. According to the White House, pollinators contribute more than 24 billion dollars to the United States economy. In 2009, the crop benefits from native insect pollination in the United States were valued at more than 9 billion dollars. #landconservation #landtrusts #colorado #land4all #pollinators #wildlifeconservation

There is injustice in the world today and we are reminded of it far too often. Learning about and talking about the principles of justice, equality, diversity, and inclusion can help organizations actively work on a better tomorrow. The work is important. What gives us hope is hearing the voice of Faith E. Briggs in the film "This Land". She found empowerment and inclusivity through claiming ownership of public lands. Please tell us more stories like this. *Link to view film on our profile.* #Land4All

passing along some garlic mustard information... pull it, bag it, throw it away. 🗑 • Posted @withregram@iceagetrailorg • Have you ever seen garlic mustard pulled out and left on trails? Many people believe that they are doing a native plant-life a favor by removing this invasive species and leaving it on the trail. However, even when garlic mustard is pulled out by the roots, its seeds survive. Many of those seeds will be washed back to the side of the trail where hundreds of new plants will grow and spread next year. ___ Garlic mustard produces large quantities of seeds, spreads rapidly in wooded areas, and out-competes many native species. It is still important to control its expansion. Here is what you can do instead: ___ 1. Take a bag and fill it with pulled plants, then take the bag home and put it in the garbage. 🌿 2. Pick the flowers from the plant and put them in a pocket and again dispose of those properly when you get home. By picking the flower tops, you prevent the plant from making seeds. This can be an easy way to deal with one or two plants that you discover on your hike. 🌿 3. Whatever you do, DON’T leave plant matter on the ground. 🌿 ___ Images courtesy of UW Wisconsin Horticulture and Skillet Creek Media ___ #IceAgeTrail #MyHappyPlace #Land4All #TravelWisconsin #OutWiGo #FindYourPark #FindYourTrail #OptOutside #HowWiHelp #LandTrust #ExploreWisconsin #GetOutside #GarlicMustard

Shangrila: “a remote beautiful imaginary place where life approaches perfection,” says the dictionary. Take out “imaginary” and that’s a pretty good description of Shangrila Wetlands Habitat Reserve. The Ice Age Trail is a treasure to many, including a wide variety of wildlife that call the Trail and the lands surrounding it home. One such species is a rare, speckled, and bright blue butterfly — the endangered Karner blue (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) 🦋 ___ The Ice Age Trail passes across both private and public lands, naturally creating habitat corridors that allow isolated Karner blue populations to connect and expand their range. Partnerships between private landowners, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Ice Age Trail Alliance are essential for the recovery of the Karner blue butterfly in Wisconsin. ___ Click on the link in our bio to read more about local conservation efforts to protect the Karner blue! ___ Article by Kevin Thusius, Director of Land Conservation at the Ice Age Trail Alliance Photo by Steve Apps Photography ___ #IceAgeTrail #MyHappyPlace #Land4All #TravelWisconsin #OutWiGo #FindYourPark #FindYourTrail #OptOutside #HowWiHelp #LandTrust #ExploreWisconsin #GetOutside #LandConservation #EndangeredSpecies #KarnerBlueButterfly

We're continuing our exploration of forest wildflowers this week with Sessile bellwort (Uvularia sessilifolia), also called little merrybells or wild oats. These small, delicate perennial wildflowers grow in a variety of conditions, including in both deciduous and evergreen forests, where soil types are quite different. ⠀ ⠀ Photo by Jason Zarnowski⠀ ⠀ #wildflower #spring #nature #landtrust #dhconservancy #outdoors #delawareriver #landconservation #conservation #forests #trees #cleanwater #protectedland #optoutside #escapebrooklyn #catskills #iloveny #poconomtns #liveauthentic #4states1source #ScenicWildDelawareRiver #SullivanCatskills #discovernepa #nature_restores #naturephotography #getoutside #MyHappyPlace #Land4All

Did you know that the beautiful, blooming prairies you enjoy sauntering through as you hike along the Ice Age Trail exist because of thoughtful land management and years of restoration work? “The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is where ecology meets people’s experience,” says Kevin Thusius, the Ice Age Trail Alliance’s (IATA) Director of Land Conservation. “Managing Ice Age Trail lands for plant and wildlife habitat and managing them for aesthetics go hand-in-hand, because the more biodiverse a landscape is, the more it contains what people go into nature to see, hear, and feel.” Click on the link in our bio to read more about the Ice Age Trail Alliance’s land management efforts! ___ Article by Christi Ehler, volunteer writer for the Ice Age Trail Alliance Photo by Kevin Thusius ___ #IceAgeTrail #MyHappyPlace #Land4All #TravelWisconsin #OutWiGo #FindYourPark #FindYourTrail #OptOutside #HowWiHelp #LandTrust #ExploreWisconsin #GetOutside

Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) is a beautiful native tree found in the understory of our forests that blooms in spring. Interestingly, he white parts of the flower are actually not petals but botanically considered bracts (a type of leaf). The flowers are yellow, very small, and clustered into inflorescences (a group or cluster of flowers arranged on a stem) in the center of the 4 large white bracts. Each bract has a rounded notch on the outer edge. So looking at this photo, the flowers have actually not even opened yet!⠀ ⠀ According to the USDA plants database: Flowering dogwood is a valuable food plant for wildlife because high calcium and fat contents make it palatable. Many bird types including songbirds, forest edge species, and upland game birds (e.g. wild turkey) consume the seeds. The eastern chipmunk, white-footed mouse, gray fox, gray squirrel, black bear, beaver, white-tailed deer, and skunk readily consume flowering dogwood seeds as well. Beaver, rabbits, and deer browse the leaves and sprouts of the plant. Flowering dogwood also provides shelter and habitat for many wildlife species.⠀ ⠀ Photo by Amanda Subjin⠀ ⠀ #spring #dogwood #flower #nature #landtrust #dhconservancy #outdoors #delawareriver #landconservation #conservation #forests #trees #cleanwater #protectedland #optoutside #escapebrooklyn #catskills #iloveny #poconomtns #liveauthentic #4states1source #ScenicWildDelawareRiver #SullivanCatskills #discovernepa #nature_restores #naturephotography #getoutside #MyHappyPlace #Land4All

Can’t really see the red on this northern red-legged frog that photographer Neal Maine spotted in the grass at our Neacoxie Forest Habitat Reserve. These frogs seek out forests with still-water ponds and patches of sun to breed. This Sitka spruce-and-crabapple woodland fits the bill. #myhappyplace #neacoxieforest #land4all #landtrusts #pacificlightimages #neacoxiewildlifecorridor
