This is a memorable hike because I convinced one of my friends to hike up Larch Mountain with me before sunrise. We woke up early and got on the trail at 3am. Blah, blah, blah, we were 🐒 walking our way up and couldn't get there in time. Reaching the summit...I didn't realize you could drive up...oops 😩 β›°πŸŒ² β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’ Larch Mountain ▫️14.4 miles ▫️4,055 feet ▫️Out & Back β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’ #hike #hiking #nature #mountain #trails #beautiful #scenic #outdoors #lakes #landscape #trailhead #th #life #naturelove #naturelover #naturelovers #naturegram #natureporn #oregon #portland #instalike #instagood #larchmountain #sunrise #mymistake #oops

Sherrard Point on Larch Mountain will be a spot I come back to. On a clear day you can see Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, Mt Adams, Mt Rainer and Mt St. Helens. It was nice to take a break from digging fire line and play lookout for a day, back to the real work today though. ✌🏼 - - - - - #eaglecreek #eaglecreekfire #indiancreekfire #wildfire #wildlandfirefighter #columbiarivergorge #multnomahfalls #oneontagorge #oneontafalls #horsetailfalls #sherrardpoint #larchmountain #lookout #mtsthelens #mtrainier #mtadams #mthood #mtjefferson #oregonnw

Special thanks for the original post by @centuryfarmer for this excellent bit of history related to #eaglecreekfire. Even though these fires were more than 100 years apart, there are similarities here. All of us were very lucky the east wind was blowing as little as it was for as short of a time period as it did. #eaglecreekfire #larchmountain #eastwind #columbiarivergorge #wildfire #history at Troutdale, Oregon

I was really looking forward to mushroom season in the Gorge this year. I took this video the day the teenager started the fire on the other side of the Gorge. My favorite spots are still burning today and the trails will most likely be closed until next year. I was born on September 11th, 1992. It's been a wild 25 years. I didn't do anything crazy or spectacular today, just spent another day working towards my goals. I was wide awake early this morning, my heart so heavy going through fire posts from my hiking groups on FB and IG... Larch Mountain has become one of my favorite places over the years... The biking, hikes, waterfalls; the home of a dear friend. So many memories. I'm thinking of the families fearing the loss of their homes in this precious place and the firefighters risking their lives to salvage it. #larchmountain #multnomahfalls #columbiagorge #eaglecreekfire #naturegirl #treehugger #latourellefalls #corbett #forestfire #pnw at Larch Mountain, Mt. Long live the gorge. These woods were my home, I knew them better than any of the streets in my own town. This sacred space has been completely destroyed by thoughtless idiots. Thankful that all the humans have safely escaped this awful fire so far and praying for it to be contained soon so evacuees may return to their homes. My heart is broken that these spaces have been robbed from us thanks to inconsiderate individuals πŸ’” #onlyyou #eaglecreek #larchmountain #pacificcresttrail #cascadelocks #gorge400trail #oneontagorge #RIP

Besides the amazing viewpoints, it was an absolute joy meeting the locals. Honestly, I'm more tore up about the loss of wildlife than a lodge or a nice day hike. We only visit these trailheads, these critters live there. Seriously, I'm the one that will move catapillers and slugs off the trail so they won't get stepped on! It's devastating that many won't escape this fire. AND it was 100% avoidable... fucking fireworks. So while people worry about potential hikes in the future, I'll be worrying about these critters. #wildlife #critters #EagleCreek #EagleCreekFire #forestfire #horsetailfalls #oneonta #tunnelfalls #ruckleridge #rockofagestrail #MultnomahFalls #larchmountain #columbiarivergorge #curiousgorge #pdx #PNW #unfuckingbelievable

In the short time I've lived here in Portland I've hiked many of the amazing trails along the Colombia River Gorge, and I am so glad I got to see them lush and green as they are meant to be. Now it's completely burned, because of a reckless decision by one individual. I know the forest will heal, but it will be a long recovery. #eaglecreekfire #greennomore #pnw #larchmountain #cascades at Larch Mountain

I've never seen my home look so sad. Within days my favorite place in the world has gone up in flames and it feels like there's nothing we can do. I'm pretty sure this moss is from Upper Oneonta Trail 424 up Larch Mountain. These trails that are burning were my lifeline not very long ago. Visiting them was the pivotal part of my self care regiment to get through a tremendously challenging part of my life and a bad depressive episode. I hiked the trails so regularly that I began to feel a kinship with the trees and rocks. It felt I was getting to know them. I watched them change from winter to spring to summer, and I've looked forward to see them in fall again. I watched the many faces of the forest reveal itself to me as ice melted, triliums sprouted and moved over to make way for paint brush, larkspur, and now blackberries. A friend introduced me to the flowers. I learned their names and tried to keep them. When I hiked, I would pick up trash others left behind on my way out, often filling a large kitchen trash bag. This was a way of thanking the forest for having me, and as a kind of trade, as I intended to enjoy the blackberries when they came into season. I've had a few on my recent hikes with friends, when they were just getting ripe. One time I noted a sapling just off the path. At that time I was struggling badly with suicidal ideation. Sticking around to see that sapling as an immature tree years from now was one of the anchors I used to keep me here. To come back and visit It as an old woman. It was a point in the future to look forward to. I imagined that sapling weathering winters, storms and droughts and being all the more beautiful and stronger for It. It hurts that I know it's gone. They're all gone. They were there for me, and for that I'm forever grateful. I'm deeply saddened that they won't be there for thousands more. This very much feels like mourning. The forest will come back. It will regrow, and this ash will be good fertilizer for new growth. I intend to plant trees and seeds in a volunteer program once they're up and running after the fire. I know and understand new life will grow here, but right now it hurts. That was our forest. We lost so much. #cascadelocksfire #larchmountain #oneonta #cascadelocks #thegorge #selfcare #forestfire

Devastating! 😩 The Eagle Creek fire is the latest to devastate sacred and unbelievably beautiful terrain. Some f* #^ing stupid assholes set off fireworks In. The. Forest!!! 😑 on the Eagle Creek Trail in the Columbia River Gorge, taking or threatening Eagle Creek, Multnomah Falls, Oneonta Gorge, and more treasured trails and landscape in this unbelievably scenic area. . . The town next to my mom's has been given an evacuation order. (Mom is staying at my sister's place, so she is safeπŸ’—). The smoke is so thick it is hard to see and breathe. There is an inch thick layer of ash everywhere. . . Please pray to your God/gods, and/or send positive vibes for enough rain to put out all these fires burning on the West Coast, but not so much to flood. (Is that too picky?) πŸ™πŸΌβœ¨ . . Believe it or not, there are actually signs posted along the Eagle Creek Trail warning against danger of fireworks in the forest. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Who would have thought signs were necessary? Devastating. 10,000 acres at last reporting as of this writing. . . Photo is of Multnomah Creek (flows to the famous Falls) from an underground spring on Larch Mountain. Multnomah Creek then flows to the enormous and majestic Columbia River which divides Oregon and Washington. Throwback to last August riding Larch Mountain solo. Before the fire, I had plans to do this ride again next Wednesday when I got back into town. That's obviously not gonna happen and now I'm left wondering when I'll ever be able to do it again, and what things will look like. #eaglecreekfire #larchmountain at Larch Mountain
