Goldstein describes mindfulness as “paying attention to something on purpose and with fresh eyes.” This is why mindfulness is so helpful. Instead of focusing on how badly we want the pain to stop, we pay attention to our pain with curiosity and without judgment. This approach is very different from what our brains naturally do when we experience the physiological sensation of pain. Our minds typically launch into a litany of judgments and negative thoughts. I love this old Cherokee Indian tale of The Two Wolves and give the picture and story out to all those on my mindfulness course in week 7. I also offer them a mini picture of the wolves to keep in their wallets, as a reminder. An important reminder that whatever we choose to give out attention to, will get bigger and stronger. . The story goes like this: . There is an ancient tale of a child being taught by a grandparent about cruelty in the world and how it comes about. “A fight is going on inside me” the grandparent says to the child. “It’s a fight between two wolves. One is mean spirited and angry, the other wolf is understanding and kind.” The child asks the grandparent which wolf will win the fight. Whatever our job, age or lifestyle, we all have things we need to do that we don’t want to. Whether that’s a task we find boring or difficult, or one we’re just not in the mood for. Especially on a Monday!! . Many years ago I heard someone talk about changing your attitude from “I HAVE to do this” to “I GET to do this.” I wasn’t convinced at the time but these days I do this a lot. . Does it make the unwanted task somehow magically enjoyable and one I can’t wait to get done? Sadly not. But it makes a surprising difference to my attitude towards it and means I procrastinate far less and actually get it done! It’s not always easy tho! I’m so excited about this new project. These calligraphy kits are something I’ve been dreaming about for a while! Calligraphy has been such a great outlet for me and a way for me to be more mindful. I’m hoping these kits will help to teach others how to do find that as well. Included in each kit is one regular marker, one chalkboard pen, one mini chalkboard for a final project, and a special Ava Rose Co how to write calligraphy work book. 🖋 Tomorrow I will be at Point Loma Nazarene University’s fall festival hosting an Ava Rose Co table to teach calligraphy. Had the pleasure of my first visit to @norman_court yesterday for their delicious #afternoontea Easily the best hosting and food I’ve had at something like this in a very long time. Their chef is amazing! . A very impressive house, in a stunning location and run by a lovely team of people. Although well-known, in some ways it’s a hidden gem that I wish I’d discovered sooner. And especially the #schooltrips and facilities they have there. . Thanks to @tumblesaway for introducing me to it. . It was interesting to talk to people while we were there about how rarely these days we get to take the time to slow down for a moment and enjoy eating and drinking like this. #mindfuleating #slowdownandenjoy . It’s harder than it should be to find a non-cheesy image for ‘compassion’. But I like elephants so this one will do. . It can be a bit of an odd concept, the whole ‘compassion’ thing. And it’s an aspect that a lot of people get stuck on. It’s seen as “too fluffy” “too emotional” “self-indulgent” and when you look at the reasons why a lot of us feel like that, it’s pretty revealing. . But despite our hesitation and barriers about it (and in some cases because of those barriers) it’s continually being shown as something which can have serious benefits in our lives. Whether at work, at home or the way we feel about ourselves. So it’s sad that a lot of us... well, we suck at doing it! . On a day when I’ve found out someone I’ve been working with has had some very sad personal news, a friend is upset about a situation that thankfully not many other people will find themselves in, and starting the day by having to deal with a very injured and frightened bird, it’s a concept that has been high on the list of things I’m aware of today. . It’s prompted me to write a couple of little articles on this topic which I’ll put out this month. If it’s an area which you identify with as being hard for you, or you have questions about, just send me a message and I’ll try to include answers in what I post later on. . In the meantime give yourself a bit of a break today. 3 workshops in 2 days, done! Had my pains down my back and my hip during the 2nd day (have had these for a while now) but somehow none of that seems to matter when I am in training/sharing mode. * These amazing bunch of people made my weekend! * I truly believe that when we make it about others, things flow. When we forget the connectedness we share and go into “me” mode, the slope seems steeper and the climb harder. “We” mode on the other hand has more power because than we operate from a space of adding value, creating harmony and believing in abundance. Sacrifices don’t feel forced, connections don’t seem fake, and life seems far from stressful.
