At an NHS stress event I hosted recently, here are some of the words people used to describe what stress is. I’d say most of these words describe either our reactions or the causes. But stress itself is a normal response, an automatic emotional regulatory response to what is deemed to be threatening. This can even start with a thought. By practicing mindfulness we can learn to focus on what is happening while it is happening and be with the autonomic reactions without further harm. When the body ‘bubbles’ with anxiety, disgust, anger learn to slow down by focusing on something in the present moment and simply being with the feelings and thoughts (even if unbearable). It will pass. You mind's job is to think just like your hearts job is to beat. You can no more quiet your mind that you can stop your heart from beating. The goal of meditation is to control your thoughts to think what you what it to think. When we can learn to do that during meditation, we can use that same skill when we are not meditation. (Like when someone cuts you off on the road.) Meditation allows us to be in control of our emotions and it allows us to choose where to put our thoughts. What’s YOUR strength. Someone always being negative can be a pain. I’ve managed teams where one person always seems to be finding holes and issues in ideas that the rest of us are getting excited about! Everyone gets annoyed... but I love it. That person helps avoid the pitfalls and issues we may not have seen. (Tho there’s also a time to shut up and get on board 😉) . I’m lucky in having a business partner who is almost the complete opposite to me. In fact he described it today as he sees all the practical issues and potential problems in business options, and I see the possibilities and creative side. Plus he’s great at figures and I truly do suck. We play to our strengths and it actually makes for a great combination. Often frustrating!! But still very useful. . Now it’s not always true that I see only the positives! In other situations it’s me who sees the potential issues and practicalities and problems. And other people helping me see the good sides. . Sometimes meditation feels like this - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ you sit down, close your eyes, take a few breaths, let your body settle, let your mind settle, ... and then you're met with clarity and insight and all these gems revealing themselves from the inside. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... and then often it doesn't. ;) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Often meditation feels like sluggishness, like tired, like bored, like in pain, like neutral, like irritation, like anxiety, like stress. We're not always in bloom. This is important to talk about. In our culture, we're often looking for the solution. Feel anxious, meditate, don't feel anxious anymore. This can ABSOLUTELY happen, but when we approach meditation this way, we can so easily get freaked out by all the rest we're feeling (and all the rest we're feeling? it's what's underneath the anxiety and it needs to be seen). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the exquisite things mindfulness meditation teaches us is to simply BE with what is, letting our problem solving minds take a break... and ironically, this is what creates the relaxation, peace & well-being we're looking for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I would love to take you on an 8-week meditation journey. Ok, so I’m paraphrasing Britney’s iconic classic song here. But seriously, Mindfulness. Over the past few years it’s become more and more popular. Too popular maybe? I know sometimes that even I see too much of it, despite being a big fan. . The issue with something being so popular is that there will always be a lot of people wanting to commercialise it. At least 2 Mindfulness apps are now worth $250 million. If you can make more money by stamping the word ‘Mindful’ on something, people will. And it can be sold as some magical fix to all the world’s problems. It’s not, and it’s not for everyone. . This is why I often do a talk called “Mindfulness: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. Because there really are different sides to it. . If there's one thing I have learned in the last 10 years of spiritual journey, it's this: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ R-E-L-E-A-S-E J-U-D-G-M-E-N-T ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I used to judge myself so harshly. I used to be poisoned by shame. I used to be crippled by the anxiety that I'd be found out as a huge fraud: someone not even worthy of being human.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My heart breaks as I write this because it is true. You may have been able to tell, maybe not. I hid it behind a smile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Somehow, over these past ten years (I'm sure simply getting older has helped), I have learned to release the harshness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have learned to see my hurts, traumas & serious design flaws with kindness & grace.
