Inspiration for today... Isn't it good to know that the life choices you make can greatly affect the quality of your life? You are not destined by your genetics and history. You can make simple, informed life choices that support you to live a better quality of life. Physically stronger and healthier. Emotionally more balanced and stable. Mentally more clear, focused and empowered. Spiritually more fulfilled. . . On a physical level start with reducing processed food and eating more natural foods. Get outside and create a relationship with nature. . Emotionally: Learn to accept emotions and allow them. The good ones as well as the uncomfortable ones. . It started 10 years ago today with $51.91 and 21.5 lbs of vegetables and fruits. After having a conversation at TEDMED with @deanornishmd a couple of weeks earlier, I wanted to give his recommendations a try. Even after losing 50 lbs, my diabetes worsened. His idea: “Ray, drop the fish, eggs, and yogurt/cottage cheese from your diet for a couple of months” to see how it would go. I decided to give it a try for a year. I can’t say that the first couple of months were easy. At times, quite honestly, it was awful. Somehow not having these three ingredients seemed to crash my culinary world. I know now that all food is habit, but then I stayed with it for the love of science. Now using the same ingredients, the food I eat is spectacular. Within 45 days my fasting glucose was normal and my HbA1C was perfect at the next check up. I know longer crashed after meals despite a significant increase in starchy vegetables and fruits. Glucose became my primary fuel. While some game the system by removing the antagonist (dietary CHO) my diet increased it and the dysfunction was eliminated. I treated the cause not the symptom. Said another way if accidents (HbA1C) and traffic tickets (fasting glucose) are biomarkers for a bad driver (poor glucose control), what do we learn about the driver by removing the car (dietary CHO) and checking their driving record in 6 months? It was a diet of ‪vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices‬ that ultimate demonstrated to me what caused the issue. Eating right on the #FoodTriangle. Yes, I began this BEFORE thanksgiving, not after. That same year at TEDMED @davidsinclairphd pressed me to dig deeper on mild cold stress and physiology. I had no idea how this would ultimately change my life and how many people it would help in the future. I’m grateful 10 years later for this chance meeting and the insatiable curiosity that allows me to challenge my most closely held beliefs. I can remember 10 years ago telling someone I didn’t want to live until I was 100 years old. I had this idea of what my life would look like if I lived past 80. It looked like me laying in bed with no purpose to live and being a burden on my family. Why would I want to do that? I didn’t realize it then but I was thinking backward. I got caught up in what I have subconsciously been taught. However, I have since come to realize that we don’t have to “age” and we can live to see 100 or well over! longevity My question back then should have been, “how could I live until I am 100 AND have a good quality of life”. Not only for myself but for my family as well. That has since been the question I started asking myself and started seeking answers for. I know the title is a little hard to believe. Can we actually “live forever”? Death is indeed inevitable and it will eventually happen to all of us one day. But what if we could naturally hack our body into thinking it was younger than it actually was by understanding why cells die and how lifestyles influence longevity. This book changes my mindset and opened my eyes to the idea of living longer than anyone I have ever known. “Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable” - Dr. David Sinclair — (A short interruption from my mental health posts) I don’t like superlative statements but this is THE BEST health/medicine/science book I’ve ever read! It’s very heavy on molecular biology and genetics terms and concepts, but don’t you fret! There’s a glossary at the end if you’re not familiar with the jargon. — This book doesn’t just TELL you what you should do for optimal health, it tells you why and backs it up with scientific studies. And not only does it talk about the science and biology behind extending lifespan, but it also talks about the socioeconomic, political, environmental, and ethical implications of increased lifespan 🤭 — That’s right, it’s science, health, society, environment, and ethics, ALL IN ONE BOOK.
