Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. ~Arthur Conan Doyle, The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #relishthisjourney #addicted_to_openwalls #storefront #londonmylove #london #london_only #england #bar #sherlockholmes #pub #openmyworld #ig_london #londonphotography #travelmore #wander #london4all #travelgram #lifeofadventure #traveller #londonlife #travelphotographer #teamcanon #prettycitylondon #london_gurus #thisislondon #visualcollective #omgb #londonbars #london_enthusiast #travelstoke at The Sherlock Pub

"Brown Dog" statue in Battersea Park, marking the Brown Dog affair (a k.a. the Brown Dog Riots) which was controversy which raged from 1903-1910 over the morals of (possibly illegal) vivisection, particularly the one alleged case that was found to be carried out by scientist Sir William Bayliss in front of a class of 60 students on a brown terrier dog in 1902/3. Bayliss successfully sued for libel over allegations that the procedure was in unlawful circumstances, but unleashed a massive moral debate over vivisection. The National Anti-Vivisection Society commissioned a bronze memorial dog fountain / statue, unveiled in Battersea park in 1906, but scientists and medical students were outraged, leading to over 1,400 people bring involved in the London Brown Dog riots of December 1907. This original memorial was subject to do much attack over the next couple of years to the extent that it has police protection, until it was finally removed and presumed destroyed in 1910. This new statue was unveiled in December 1986. It was supposedly moved into storage in 1992 as part of a park renovation scheme; dubious campaigners saw its return to its new spot in 1994. Though this new statue has led a quiet life this far, since it had been moved, it's new location is midway along a long and narrow woodland walk path, very easy to miss and suggesting it's still debatable nature. However, whilst hidden away, it is often adorned with flowers by visitors, proving it is not entirely forgotten. After hunting down another "forgotten" dog statue in Kensington Gardens a few weeks back, I was keen to locate this one too. I couldn't find it on last visit, so was glad to locate it this time. The iconic Albert Bridge over the Thames in London, has notices on either end instructing troops marching over the bridge not to march in unison. The bridge, built in 1873, is suspension bridge, a hybrid of several designs; nicknamed 'The Trembling Lady', there were well founded concerns that much impact of them marching in step (mechanical unison) could cause the bridge to collapse. The bridge has been supported by two pillars since 1973, but still does indeed tremble. at Albert Bridge, London

Look at those "little" birdies 🐥 They are proud inhabitants of St James's Park in Central London. But if you visit the park and don't see them at first, don't give up. They are around there somewhere and that somewhere is usually around a fountain at one end of the lake. 🐟 I've also heard they have been fed (almost) every day next to that fountain. 🕵️‍♂️ Have you seen that event? --- @stjameslondon @london_gurus @visitlondon @london.travel . . . . . . . . . . #stjamespark #stjames #stjamesway #stjamesparklondon #stjamesoficial #stjameslondon #stjamesspark #stjamesparkpelicans #pelicans #pelican #pelicanos #pelicano #birds #stjamespelicans #londonsbest #londontravelguide #london_gurus #londonlocals #londonlife #londoner #londontips #LondonTips #londontip #londontourist #londontouristguide #londontouring #tourlondon #londontourism #londontravelguide #londontravel at St. James's Park

Looking across the Thames at the old Lots Road Power Station in Chelsea. Built 1901-5, and was the largest power station ever built. It was, quite likely, the first steel-frame building built in the British Isles, and supplied power to the London Underground will into the 1960s. Since bring decommissioned, it had feel into a rather derelict state of decay; it is now being redeveloped into a tower of apartments. Sat to the right of the photo you can see the old Chelsea Wharf building. The photo I uploaded a couple of weeks ago of the multiple bird houses in what would have been the old 17th/18th century Cremerone pleasure gardens, is located also just to the right of the old power station. Photos taken late yesterday afternoon. at Lots Road Power Station

Old & New. Beautiful wisteria over very old gravestones in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church, Battersea. I've passed by here several times when walking the Thames path but stopped to take these photos early yesterday evening and have read up on the place a bit. There has been a religious site here since 800 AD, with the present church completed in 1777. It is Grade I listed, and is of note for being the church where artist and poet William Blake got married in 1782, where Britain'sOld & New. The church itself (which I neglected to get a decent shot of!!) is Grade I listed, and is of note for being the church where artist and poet William Blake got married in 1782, where Britain's most famous landscape painter J.M.W. Turner painted the Thames from the vestry window, and for having infamous American military officer Benedict Arnold buried here. I am not particularly religious (more spiritual and in touch with the land, in the more traditional pagan type way), but I do find old churches fascinating as historical documents. at St Mary's Church, Battersea
