Using nerdy enthusiasm that would seemingly never end. I will spare you and just state that nothing has done more for my over all shoulder mobility than swinging. My shoulders feel brand new after a swinging session. If you want to learn about mental toughness, Mick is a pretty good place to start. In 2019 he completed a 24 hour AMRAP where he raised over five thousand dollars for charity Mates for Mates. The AMRAP involved one hour on the assault bike, one hour on the assault runner and one hour of burpees, on repeat for 24 hours straight. He completed 250km on the bike, 52km on the run and 1668 burpees. All of this was done blindfolded, with no music. Fresh organic apricots are a little hard to find, on a regular basis, around here (Toronto, Canada) . . So if you struggle like I do, to find fresh organic apricots... You have to do the next best thing— sulphur-free dried apricots are an incredible alternative, according to Medical Medium. . . He goes on to note, that while not every dried fruit is valuable, apricots tend to hold all of their medicinal qualities when dehydrated. He even says that the potassium actually increases when apricots are dried— and this is unlike many other fruits. . . I like consuming apricots because they have phytochemical compounds that attach, and bind themselves to chemical molecules such as DDT, deep within the body. . . Apricots are also a B12 enhancing food, meaning they eliminate unhelpful elements in the digestive tract that get in the way of the body’s healthy B12 production. . . The organic, dried, sulfur-free apricots which I’m currently enjoying, are from COMPASS... I picked them up from Costco before this whole pandemic thing happened—so I’m really not sure if they would even have them now or not... just make sure whatever brand you buy, doesn’t have any added sugar, citric acid, or any other preservatives listed on the ingredients.... and look for the words SULFUR-FREE right on the packaging. If you don’t see those words—then it’s most likely loaded with sulfites. If a person is not able to move a joint freely through its full range of motion, then they are already putting themselves at an increased risk of injury before even attempting to pick up a weight and load that range of motion. There should be a period of time either before/after training or even on a separate day that is dedicated to improving mobility. Something as little as 5-10 minutes daily can be enough to see progress. One of the most common reasons you feel unathletic is because you aren't able to get into the positions and postures that you want. It's much easier to do a little mobility work every day to preserve it than it is to lose it and have to work to get it back. EPISODE 303 | The Aerobic Energy System . ▪️As we practice social distancing, I’ve started to shift from a strength focus due to equipment availability, or lack thereof . As much as I love barbell work, this is an excellent time to shift back to improving general work capacity . My conditioning work has changed quite drastically & today was my weekly “Base Aerobic Day.” . The workout - 60’ Running Clock . 🔹Stairs: 25 Flights x 3 Rounds w/out Rest 🔸Steady-State Cycling for the remainder . ▪️What is the Aerobic System? . The Aerobic System utilizes oxygen to produce ATP (energy) . It’s responsible for the majority of energy production for long duration work . It also happens to be the only system that can utilize & breakdown fat to produce ATP . Inherently, this system has a tremendous CAPACITY for energy production, which comes at the cost of POWER, or energy production at high rates . It’s limited by the supply of oxygen from your cardiorespiratory & cardiovascular systems, oxygen utilization by the muscles, & substrate/enzyme availability . ▪️There are many ways to develop this system, some focused on improving the capacity of the system to provide energy & others focused on maximal oxygen uptake . An excellent resource to learn more is a book by @coachjoeljamieson - Ultimate MMA Conditioning . Today’s long duration session utilized the CARDIAC OUTPUT METHOD. . In layman’s terms, this is your classic LISS (Low Intensity, Steady State) training . From an adaptation standpoint, a few things take place: . 🔹Eccentric Cardiac Hypertrophy via volume overload of cardiac fibers causing a stretch . 🔸Increased stroke volume as a result (The amount of blood each heart beat pumps) . 🔹This enhances oxygen supply to working tissue & inc mitochondrial size/density, inc muscle capillarization, & inc aerobic enzyme production . ▪️Generally, these sessions should be completed in the 130-150 heart rate range, w/ sessions lasting between 30-90 min, utilizing a volume progression scheme .
