As part of the @riba student mentoring scheme, our Manchester team welcomed second year architecture students from Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) and University of Liverpool to our office. The mentee groups spent time with their mentors to discuss their current university projects, go through their ideas, as well as ask any questions that they had, gaining valuable advice. The students then joined us for our end of month Friday drinks and had the opportunity to chat with wider members of our team. We’ll be seeing our mentee groups regularly throughout the year and look forward to seeing the students’ progress!

‘The difference between good and bad architecture is the time you spend on it’ Continuing from the previous post. Having design and modelled the Pied de Terre space, I was still unable to accurately visualise the materiality and aesthetics of the structure. Therefore, I found that rendering the plan into a perspective format into Photoshop would allow me to critique the design. Here I could manipulate certain features of the structure. Although the design looks to be like modern architecture. I have illustrated the various spaces in their context. Overall, I believe that I have achieved a visualisation of the design. In addition to this, adding the design in context with the site shows the relationship between the archetype and the area.

Today’s Searchroom Story comes from Aifa and Cezara, who are currently pursuing their postgraduate studies at Manchester School of Architecture! ⁣ ⁣ Aifa and Cezara are working on a research project to understand the design behind Warrington New Town, looking in particular at the urban planning, town planning, building architecture and landscape architecture.⁣ ⁣ New Towns were first established in England in the late 1940s as a result of the New Towns Act 1946. The underlying aim was to relocate populations in poor or bombed-out housing following the Second World War. Warrington, sitting at a key intersection on the nation’s motorway and railway infrastructure, was deemed to be an effective ‘growth point’ for the North West region, and on the 26th April 1968 it was designated as a New Town.⁣ ⁣ In contrast to other New Towns such as Milton Keynes or Cumbernauld, Warrington New Town was developed so that it would connect to the existing ‘old town’, rather than standing as a completely separate development. Warrington New Town Development Corporation developed five areas across Warrington; Westbrook, Great Sankey, Padgate, Birchwood and parts of the Town Centre. By March 1981 the Corporation had completed 3,500 rented housing units, over 330,000 square metres of industrial units, 37,300 square metres of office space and 29,000 square metres of commercial units.⁣ ⁣ October 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the start of the Warrington New Town consultation work. We hold the records of the Warrington and Runcorn Development Corporation, documenting each stage of the development process from the initial planning work to the winding up of the Corporation in 1989.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #SearchroomStories #ExploreArchives #Archives #History #Cheshire #Warrington #HistoryLover #ArchivesOfInstagram #WarringtonNewTown #Architecture #ManchesterSchoolOfArchitecture

‘Can you live in a museum?’ This project aims to understand the concept of Venice as a museum city, questioning the line between architecture and artefact. The model is a three-dimensional translation of @oma.eu journal article ‘museum’ which discusses @themuseumofmodernart , each sentence in the article has been applied to Venice and symbolised by an artefact in the model. ———————————————————————————— Made using hand cut and folded paper and by 6th year USE student @lornalovatt ———————————————————————————— #papermodel #maquettearchitecture #venice #urbanspatialexperimentation #architecturalconcept #modelmaking #b15workshop #manchesterschoolofarchitecture #universityofmanchester #manchestermetropolitanuniversity #conceptmodel

‘Architecture is the learned game correct and magnificent of forms assembled in the light’ This post showcases my final structural model to complete one of my projects, Stopover. The brief asked me ‘to design a structure which encompasses features suitable for a musician’. Having analysed the brief I decided to base my structure as a ‘pied-de-terre’ for an Imam. I found that I could introduce religious aesthetics into the structure whilst creating a small living space for the Imam. Although I haven’t illustrated the aesthetics in this post. It allows me to visualise the space as a potential archetype. Including modern minimalist features gives the space a contextual atmosphere of Manchester. The model is completely fabricated using the material Foamboard. This was my first time using this specific material. I found that with using a scalpel it was cut into very easily, with a sharp edge. Overall, I find that the model was Quixote easy to design and create. Adding a 1:100 scale figurine added context to the model

“A modular concept project called ‘What If?’ The premise was to propose a way of living in which knowledge is “produced”. The concept of the moving houses was to create an interchangeable system that allows for different rooms (Indoor gardens, kitchens, art rooms, etc) to be rearranged thus exposing residents/users to different opportunities to gain knowledge. The blocks represent permanent spaces such as bedrooms, washrooms, etc” Made by Andia Chan, Lucy Kendall and Joe Makhoul ———————————————————————————— #manchesterschoolofarchitecture #andarchitectureatelier #modularliving #b15workshop #sectionmodel #maquette #architecturalmodelmaking #modelmaking #conceptmodel #architecturestudents #archistudent

Thank you all who came to the @archmodelsnet @vamuseum Dr. Simona Valeriani lecture - fascinating insight into how models are perceived by museums/archivists and their value to design practice. Video footage will be available at some point in the future! (When we get to it). Additional thanks for everybody’s patience whilst we sorted the technical issues out. ‘Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves’ - Julia Morgan The first of many posts. I am hoping to create a portfolio of work which I’ve been inspired by and created. Here I have shown a model which I made a few years back. The brief given stated, ‘Create a structure which occupies one person and demonstrates a link between sound and space’. My first thoughts were to create a structure which resembles a musical instrument. Then I discovered the various forms of Origami. I found that through using origami techniques, I could design a structure which allowed the user to experience a relaxing and calming atmosphere. In addition to this, I was asked to choose a musical track which would relate to the design. Time - Inception, this was merely chosen due to the tranquil and acoustic atmosphere which is resonated in the track. My final design illustrated a Origami egg, which embodies a smooth and organic shape, as well as an acoustic interior. Placing rocks beneath conveyed a natural atmosphere.
