DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CONTRACEPTION? ⠀ For almost as long as humans have existed, we’ve been trying not to get pregnant, often in some interesting and creative ways. Well, everybody knows that abstinence is the only form of birth control that’s 100% effective, but who wants to use it? ⠀ Let's dive into the history and learn ancient ways of contraception. I promise you that after reading it you`ll be happy to live in 21st century. ⠀ ⠀ Both men and women were very creative while trying no to get pregnant. ⠀ 🔹Withdrawal method was definitely one of the oldest and easiest way. No wonder it was pretty much the same as nowadays. The Book of Genesis references withdrawal, or coitus interruptus, as a method of contraception when Onan "spills his seed" (ejaculates) on the ground so as to not father a child with his deceased brother's wife. ⠀ 🔹Early Egyptians used various forms of penis protectors for protection against disease and insects, and as badges of rank and decoration. Condoms were made from animal intestines, oiled paper, animal horn, or tortoise shell. ⠀ 🔹Women were also very creative. For centuries, many items such as leaves, lemons and sponges were used as vaginal barriers. Egyptian women used to cover the “mouth of the womb” - the cervix with some sort of sticky barrier to physically block any hopeful sperm. Besides crocodile dung, they also used a mixture of honey and sodium carbonate, or honey, acacia leaves, and lint for this purpose. ⠀ 🔹Women used different herbs to make herbal infusions that could prevent them from undesired pregnancy. ⠀ 🔹These ladies also used an ancient type of “intrauterine device’ - they actually put everything they could find inside the uterus - stones, silver balls, copper and golden loops. So you see that inventiveness if our ancestors was absolutely impressive. ⠀ 🌎 As for the modern ways of contraception - latex condoms, birth control pills, spermicides and intrauterine devices - they all have been developing through the centuries to finally become what they are know. ⠀ And we`ll discuss each of these methods in details. ⠀ Write down what you want to know.

This castle may have been the inspiration for Mary Shelley's #Frankenstein. She never knew it's famous resident. Johann Conrad Dipple, he died before her time but she may have known about his scientific aspirations. In our modern day hindsight #Dipple seems to be the #quindecennial #madscientist. There are disputed reports that Dipple had a #laboratory in the actual castle. He studied #theology, #philosophy, and #alchemy at #University. One thing that is the truth about Dipple is that he created dyes with his #chemistry, one still in use today- #prussianblue. He experimented extensively with dead animals, #dissecting them and boiling and mixing different parts with other chemicals to make #elixirs. One of these he said was the Elixir to Life and one was purported to exorcise demons. He also claimed to be able to transfer the soul of one body to another with funnels and there are rumors of Dipple robbing graves so he could transfer body parts among the corpses. Even though Mary Shelley did not know Dipple there are some connections that make it a plausible claim that Dipple was in part her inspiration for her novel. Mary Shelley's stepmother was an English translator for the Grimm brother’s fairy tales, these fairy tales are set in the valley of the Rhine River where the brother's spent their childhood. Burg Frankenstein is just a few miles from the rhine river. In 1814 Mary traveled along the Rhine and spent part of a day in a town nearby where she could've heard stories of the area’s famous #madscientist. Some of the evidence that Shelly based her novel on Dipple and named it after the Castle Frankenstein are fanciful tales, #conjecture, and #hearsay, but some even though #circumstantial could be valid. Many people don't believe in #circumstances. A very good book about what inspired Mary Shelley is #theladyandhermonsters I #recommend it if you're a fan of hers or a fan of #medicalhistory. #bookrecommendations And visiting the castle itself is a nice #sidetrip from #frankfurt, we enjoyed it. #motherdaughtertrip #graduationtrip2019 #homeschool #graduationtrip

Happy belated birthday (August 6th) to Dr. Alexander Fleming who discovered penicillin in 1928. When he walked into his lab after being on vacation and found one of Petri dishes contaminated with fungus and the bacteria dead, he said “That’s funny” 😂 and then proceeded to call his discovery “mould juice” before settling on penicillin when releasing it to the market. 💀💀💀 Also, shortly after their discovery they realized bacteria developed an intolerance if too low a dosage was used, or if the dosing period was too short. So...stop creating super bugs and take all your prescribed penicillin even after you feel better, unless a doctor tells you otherwise!!!

Quinette was a product used from 1960s to late 1980s to treat STIs, including trichomonas vaginialis and various bacterial infections. Note that the product pictured states “without DES.” . . . Starting in the late 1930s, diethylstilbestrol (DES) was prescribed to pregnant women. As a synthetic estrogen, it was promoted to prevent miscarriage, premature labor, and other pregnancy complications. . . . Studies later determined DES was ineffective for these purposes. However, it was not until 1971 when further research linked its use to clear cell carcinoma, a rare vaginal cancer. This affected both pregnant women and their unborn daughters. Later studies found exposed males were predisposed to genital deformities. . . . When these findings came to light, the FDA advised healthcare providers to stop prescribing DES-containing products and warn patients and children who had been exposed to it. It is believed 5 to 10 million Americans were exposed to DES during its lifespan in the market. To this day, there is ongoing research on the potential consequences for those exposed to it.

One of the most famous of Shakespeare’s lines (alongside “To be or not to be” and “Wherefore art thou Romeo?”) is the “Toil and trouble” speech given by the witches in Macbeth. This of course leads into a long list of gruesome ingredients added to their cauldron, and spelling misfortune for Macbeth. . There is a possibility, though, that these ingredients could be used for more than just chaos. Imagine if these witches were herbal healers – early medical professionals – and their potion a form of medicine. What would they be brewing, and why? . Writer Mariel Tishma explores this topic, and the history of coded language in herbal healing, at the link in our bio. Check it out to read more. . Went to the Indiana Medical History Museum yesterday, which is in an old pathology laboratory on the campus of the former state psychiatric hospital, which at its peak housed over two thousand inmates. It is a very odd experience as a trans person, and as a queer couple, to 'tour' the history of a place that once diagnosed, pathologized, medicalized, and incarcerated so-called 'sex perverts.' I'm sure this included men who could not help from wearing dresses, and women who loved other women. (Note in the last pic a painting that hung on the wall of the laboratory for a hundred years showing the gendered nature of this work: male doctors/experts treating the insane, who are represented, of course, as wild women. Gender non-conformity has always been a menace to society.) The oddness of our own experience was compounded by the tour guide who aggressively misgendered me at the start of the tour, in earshot of everyone else on the tour, calling me 'he' and 'him' twice despite looking as I do in these pictures. I was left with a feeling of vulnerability, as if this history is not yet past, as if I may one day be committed to such a place and experimented upon, too. Hopefully museums like these can be a reminder that our differences do not equate to diseases, that the neurotypical cishet white man is not the norm, and that the most ethical treatment is to allow people of all conditions to be agents in decision making over their own bodies and choices. But first this site needs to do a lot more to make gender and sexual minorities and disabled folks feel not just more welcome but encouraged to explore their own experiences and how their own stories relate to the history of this awful place. Later @foecult and I grabbed sushi at an upscale restaurant and the general manager, perhaps sensing our discomfort, paid for our drinks and even brought us some free food. She couldn't stress enough how welcome she wanted us to feel in her restaurant, and we were certain this had to do with our queerness and transness. What an utterly exhausting day.

Trepanning or making a burr hole is a surgical intervention in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the human skull, exposing the dura mater to treat health problems related to intracranial diseases or release pressured blood buildup from an injury. It may also refer to any "burr" hole created through other body surfaces, including nail beds. It is often used to relieve pressure beneath a surface. REPOST from @profashmosahebi: . #OnThisDayInHistory Dame Louisa Brandreth Aldrich-Blake DBE was born in 1865 🎂 . #LouisaBrandrethAldrichBlake was one of the first British women to enter the world of modern #medicine. 👩🏻‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️👩🏿‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️👩🏾‍⚕️ . Born in Chingford, London, she was the eldest daughter of a curate. Louisa Aldrich-Blake graduated in medicine from the @royalfreelondonnhs in 1893. Hey guys, I know I barely post about my one true love any more now that I’m on this side of the world, but look at the new photography exhibit that just went up at the @muttermuseum ! It’s in the executive hallway, which for those of you who are just visitors means “right near the coat rooms and the beloved water fountain according to that one visitor review from a few years ago”. You should check it out and love it as much as I do! Maybe you can even get @obsoleta to send you photos while you’re working on your dissertation so that you have a reason to smile. For those wondering, I do fully blame both @amykm37 and @michaelquiche for the weird mirror universe spelling of my name. (I’m laughing so hard and only blaming them because I think it’s funny af and I hope it’s left like that forever so that we see how long it takes robert and @anna_dhody to notice). Today would have been the 154th birthday of Louisa Aldrich-Blake. Born 15 August 1865 and died 28 December 1925. Louisa was one of the worlds first women to enter into medicine! ⠀ ⠀ Aldrich-Blake's dedication to help others led her to performing surgeries on the front line and encouraging other women to join the field. Aldrich-Blake also influenced the War Office to allow women to enlist to be a part of the medical staff.

From the scalpel to the cane to the surgical mask, the medical profession has a number of iconic symbols. This painting by an unknown Netherlandish painter features some further tools and symbols such as the skull, tool for cauterization in his hand, and the saw and keys at the man’s belt. . The unnamed surgeon seems composed, serious, with a firm jaw and wrinkled eyes. This is fitting of his position, and of his reputation among the people he likely served. However, he also seems to lack warmth, which may be potentially frightening to those same patients. . If you could create a portrait of your own profession what would you choose to include? Let us know in the comments. . (Image: “Portrait of a Surgeon” by Netherlandish Painter. 1569. Credit: Metropolitan Museum of Art. The addition contained modern surgical facilities on the top floor with the lower floors containing private, semi-private, and small public wards totaling, approximately, 70 beds.⠀ In October 1924 the project was bid and subsequently awarded at a cost of $474,000. The addition, when completed in 1925, made St. Joseph Hospital one of the largest and most modern hospitals in the state.⠀ ⠀ @DowntownReading. #ThrowbackThursday #architecture #readingpa #roaring20s #medicalhistory #historicarchitecture @readingeagle @grca @downtownalivereading @DearRDG @doorsofreading @core_rdg @berkshistory ⠀

Ever had an x-ray? You can probably thank Major Dr. John Hall-Edwards who died #OTD in 1926. Born in #KingsNorton, he was a pioneer in #radiography and completed a lot of firsts. He carried out the first X-ray of the human spine, he joined the #Warwickshire Regiment as the first military radiographer and was the first surgeon radiographer at #Birmingham General Hospital (now the site of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, #details pictured here thanks to @ryan_everson_arbsa). Not only that but he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of #Edinburgh in 1911 and was a councillor of @bhamcitycouncil between 1920 and 1925. Phew! Positron emission tomography is an important brain imaging technique, using a radioactive tracer to measure the body’s metabolic processes. In the brain, this can mean the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or brain tumour. The Neuro was the site of Canada’s first functional PET imaging unit, installed in 1975. . . . #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #brainimaging #medicineresearch #neuroscience #medicalhistory #PETscan #Montreal #McGill #Canada #TheNeuro #medicine #science

. Charlotte N. Winslow, a pediatric nurse, originally created Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup as a cure-all for fussy babies, aka “The Baby Killer”. Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup was known as a patent medication which refers to a product that was marketed without proof of safety or efficacy. The concoction was used for babies who were crying, teething, or had dysentery, for which the opioid effect of the syrup caused constipation, to treat the diarrhea. The syrup contained morphine 65 mg per ounce, as well as alcohol. One teaspoonful contained enough morphine to kill the average child. Many babies went to sleep after taking the medicine and never woke up again, leading to the syrup's nickname: the baby killer. Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup was hugely popular. In an 1868 court summary, Curtis reported selling more than 1.5 million bottles of the remedy annually. Because many caregivers did not link the death to the syrup, or may have not revealed using the syrup, there is no official statistic of the number of children that died. Estimates, however, put the number at thousands of children who died from overdose, or from addiction and withdrawal. I'm currently listening to this podcast about the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis experiment. 🔹️I don't remember when I first learned about the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment. I feel like I've known about it most of my life but I didn't realize the extent of manipulation and involvement of multiple departments in the US government which included the US Public Health Service and CDC, and the Surgeon General. 🔹️Officially titled the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male - it was conducted from the 1930s to 1970s. The purpose- to observe the late affects of what syphillis does to the black body. The endpoint of the study was death of all participants- almost 400 infected black men. The investigators basically watched as men died slowly from this curable disease. These were coerced participants who were left in the dark about their diagnosis and about the fact that they were not getting treated. Some of these men unknowingly transmitted syphilis to their wives and even some of their children were infected with congenital syphilis. 🔹️I encourage all my physician colleagues especially to listen to this podcast series from #AmericanScandal. This was a very disturbing and disgusting period in medical history where human lives were used as guinea pigs. Racism and medical paternalism were some of the main factors that allowed such an unethical study to continue for 40 years. Doctors involved in the study believed black people to be biologically inferior. Doctors plainly disregarded the humanity of the black men involved in the name of science and prestige. 🔹️The human toll is unrepairable. Infected descendants still require care today. The medical field still has a trust issue when it comes to the black community. Bias and racism in medicine still exist today. 🔹️We in the medical field need to be hypervigilant. We should be conscious about assessing ways in which cultural bias might affect our profession. Acknowledge and assess how our own subconscious attitudes might affect how we address or treat patients of different race, socioeconomic class, religion, sexual orientation, or with mental illnesses.

Maria Eley, my great x 4 great-aunt and sister to my great x 4 grandmother, was a spinster of Kelvedon in Essex who led a seemingly unremarkable life. . Maria was born circa 1790 in the village of Kelvedon. She was one of five siblings born to John Eley and his wife Sarah (née Jolliffe). John was an important figure in Kelvedon - stay-maker, School Master, Overseer of the poor, Church Clerk and Sexton. As his daughter, Maria was probably well known in the village, but she never married. The will she made 6 months before her death in Oct 1838 suggests that she was of independent means - £20 per year to her father for the remainder of his life, with any residue to be divided between her younger brother, Joseph (half), her younger sister, Ann (one quarter) and her sister-in-law, Eliza, wife of Joseph (one quarter) with bequests of five pounds to each of two nieces. In 1838, that would have amounted to a considerable amount of money. Her estate was estimated to be worth not more than £200 - around £22k today! Where this money came from shall probably remain a mystery. . The reason that she became a figure of interest in my researches was the newspaper snippet you see here. Appearing in the Essex Standard on 23 Nov 1838, roughly a month after Maria’s death, it suggests she had been ill for 25 years - almost half her life. It states that she had been bled by a surgeon in excess of 1400 times during those 25 years resulting in a total blood loss of “no less than three hogsheads and thirteen gallons”. That equates to around 360 litres!!! Surely that must be some kind of record! And one has to wonder if said surgeon ever doubted his methods. . #familyhistory #genealogy #myfamily #history #ancestors #ancestry #archive #familytree #familyhistorian #familyarchive #familyarchives #genealogyuk #genealogyresearch #ancestryuk #familyhistorymatters #findmypast #essexhistory #phlebotomy #medicalhistory #kelvedon #verynearlyanarmful #victorianmedicine #victorians #georgians #victoriansurgeon #newspaperarticle #newspaperclipping #historicalnewspapers

Both of these paintings are by Thomas Eakins, the first was painted in 1875 and shows Dr Samuel D Gross teaching students surgery. Gross was an American surgeon, a man who was an outspoken critic of Lister, who was, towards the end of the 19thC trying to introduce medicine to the idea of germs and antiseptic technique. Whilst the value of antisepsis seems obvious to us, many people were vociferous in their criticism of Lister in this period, one of these detractors was Samuel Gross. Eakins paints him here in what is a dark and dirty theatre, a bloody finger is poked into a wound, no sheets or white coats are to be seen. In the background, a woman (presumably the patient’s mother) wails in distress. In the second picture, painted years later, Eakins paints Dr Agnew in a brightly lit theatre, the doctors wear white coats and aren’t learning on/ over the patient. The contrast between the two is striking and shows the emergence of anti-septic technique in the years between 1875 and 1889. I think Gross will always be remembered as being fantastically on the wrong side of history! As doctors we take discoveries like Lister and Pasteur’s for granted! But it’s in those simple revelations that the most lives have been saved!

At one point I had a Secret Santa who sent me fun things in the mail. He wasn’t the kind of person I’d normally be friends with because we are on opposite sides of certain issues in rather large ways. However, he collects in the same genre as I do. You can always connect with someone over something! This little piece, a bit larger than a quarter, was something he gifted me with. As it turns out, it’s a mid century, stainless steel umbilical cord clamp made by Gomco. Gomco is still in business today making medical devices. . . . . . . . . . . #newborn #umbilicalcord #umbilicalcordclamp #histmed #medicalhistory #medicalanthropology #vintagemedical #antiquemedical #publichealth #medical #childbirth #obstetrics

"The Sick Child" by Edvard Munch. Edvard Munch depicted the moment before his older sister died of tuberculosis, at the age of 14, over and over from 1885 to 1926 in the form of paintings and prints. In Europe, rates of tuberculosis began to rise in the early 1600s to a peak level in the 1800s, when it caused nearly 25% of all deaths. By the 1950s mortality in Europe had decreased about 90%. Improvements in sanitation, vaccination, and other public-health measures began significantly reducing rates of tuberculosis even before the arrival of streptomycin and other antibiotics, although the disease remained a significant threat. In 1946 the development of the antibiotic streptomycin made effective treatment and cure of TB a reality. Prior to the introduction of this medication, the only treatment was surgical intervention, including the "pneumothorax technique", which involved collapsing an infected lung to "rest" it and to allow tuberculous lesions to heal. . . . . . . . . . . . #healthcarepolyclinic #edvardmunch #paintings #painting #ancienthistory #history #historical #historicalpaintings #ancientpaintings #medicalpaintings #historian #tuberculosis #vaccineswork #vaccines #oldpaintings #puzzlefeed #independence #independenceday #tricolour #painters #painter #tb #medicalhistory #ancientart #ancientpainting #norwegianartist #norwegianpainter #vaccine #medicinehistory #medicine

✨A Science of Desirable and Detestable Bodies✨ up through the end of this year at @upstatehslib The library is free and open to the public, though if you’ve never been access is a little complex but part of the fun. 9-6pm Monday-Friday, you can enter from the middle doorway in the courtyard of Weiskotten Hall at the end of Waverly Ave. right next to Crouse Hospital ER. Make two lefts until you see a sign for the library. There is a phone on the left side, if you pick it up it will automatically ring and a library employee will answer and buzz you in. The work is on the first floor, the Scholar’s Den on the second floor (pictured above) and the space outside of the elevators on the third floor. I love Archives and Special Collections at SUNY Upstate Medical University Health Sciences Library with all my heart and am so thrilled to continue to work with their archives. #medicalarchives #medschool #archivesandart #sitespecificinstallation #library #pain #medicalhistory

“I was never friends with Wayne, but I knew who he was; a burly kid with blond hair coming down below the top of his eyeglasses, strong but not a bully, and a poor student. He always reminded me of a big bespectacled sheepdog.” . So writes Dr. Gregory L. Rose, exploring an experience he had working at a small town clinic. . “Was my bedside manner in dealing with Wayne incomplete or unprofessional? What more did I need to see? My duty was not to diagnose, but to triage Wayne out of his jail cell to a proper mental health facility. Plus, I was afraid.” . Read more at the link in our bio. .
