A small, 5 million year old whale vertebrae I found a few days ago in #baysidemelbourne ... . . . The rippled bone on the surface of the centrum (epiphysis) is fused to the main body of the vertebrae, indicating that this animal was (at the least) of sub-adult/adult size before it died. . . . #science #palaeontology #fossils #paleontology #rocks #teeth #museum #zoology #bones #jurassicpark #megafauna #evolution #dinosaur #melbourne #australia #geology #melbournemuseum #biology #animals #scicomm #checkmelbourne #visitmelbourne #melbmoment

Over the past 10 months since the discovery of our undisturbed, Pleistocene creek, this is the total haul thusfar. Very very pleased! Thrown in are a few closer shots. A few hours ago, a wolf casually popped out of the bushes and circled our jeep, marking territory, as we shook off being stunned by this fully unexpected appearance and tried to capture the once-in-a-lifetime © moment. To understand how close it was to us, that's me on the left that @amitvelavadar has captured. On his phone. I repeat, his phone. Fitting that I was driving home through a dense fog in 17F weather this evening, while I listened to the last few chapters of the audiobook of this frigid tale of Ice Age America. Personally, reading this book was a fun throwback, and more scintillating than a textbook, to my undergraduate studies and my few years working as a real archaeologist. I was extra excited and suprised to hear research citations from friends and folks who had taught me at the U of A (apparently the university marketing department would like me to call it UArizona now, but old habits die hard). But enough about me and my peeps and back to the paleolithic explorers and the author (yay, hearty Coloradan) exploring their journeys to new lands and the enormous creatures they met along the way. This book was informative and fun, in the way that only a simulated recreation of prehistoric ice bridge crossings with children, Gore-Tex and artificial cheese products, can be: a delightful educational speculation, which is basically all archaeology is. Sometimes I avoid popular science writing, like all good nerds, but now I'm gonna poke around and look back at Craig Child's other nonfiction books which seem to appear on the shelves of all good remote desert bookstores (feeling nostalgic for Willow Canyon in Kanab now). PS the illustrations are unexpectedly trippy and cool too. #atlasofalostworld #craigchilds #alaska #beringstrait #adventures #travel #100booksinayear #sarahgilman #galleys #frozen #ice #archaeology #coloradan #megafauna #uofa #uarizona #college #newworld #bookstagram #booksandwine #wine #advancereadersedition #nonfiction #december #bookreview

A Super Predator in Melbourne... . . . For decades, there had been whispers of a super-predator that once existed in the fossil record (and co-existed with the fabled Megalodon). It was unlike anything alive today; a creature which had teeth the size of artillery shells, a battering ram for a skull and one of the strongest bite forces known in the animal kingdom. Imagine an Orca, the size of a modern Sperm whale. . . . In 2008, on the last day of a field trip led by Belgian palaeontologist Olivier Lambert in the Ica Desert of Peru, an immense skull was found eroding at the dust-ridden surface. Large baleen whales skulls are common in this province, but it was immediately obvious that this was no baleen whale. This skull was the size of a small car and it was studded with teeth. They had stumbled across a predator of immense proportion. In 2010, the world was introduced to “Livyatan”, the Great White whale. A super predator, that fed on the flesh of other whales, 8-9 million years ago… . . . In 2016, the youngest evidence of these Killer Sperm Whales was found on a beach near Melbourne (Beaumaris) by local prospector Murray Orr. He had found a single, 30 centimetre long tooth lying amongst the rubble. It remains the largest tooth ever found in Australia. . . . In late 2018, we found a new site in Bayside. Site B. Here, we’ve found the youngest evidence of numerous Killer Sperm whale lineages. It represents the tip of the iceberg for what we can expect for this site. . . . Want to know more? Moa bone mid clean (reverse side). Once I get all the dirt out I'll soak it in some hydrogen peroxide to bleach it before letting it dry. Only the very outside has lithified to some degree, the rest is just as it was when it was buried. #moa #palaentology #protofossil #megafauna
