The Milkman’s Son by Randy Lindsay is quite the story! If you think your family tree is crazy, you should see the surprise he found when he submitted his DNA test!! This is a well written book that draws you in from the beginning. I was worried that I wouldn’t care about an unknown person’s life and family history, but I did! It’s one of those books where you think, “You can’t make this stuff up!” Lindsay has a casual and slightly humorous writing style that is easy to read and keeps you turning pages. I enjoyed this book! It’s rated PG+, recommended for YA+, and I gave it 3/5⭐️. 🌵POP UP TOUR 🌵⁣ ⁣ Hi book friends! Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong time period? I have always thought I should have been a 1970's teen, but I wasn't. For this pop up tour with @booksparks the book I'm sharing is a memoir of growing up in the 1970s. Perfect for me! No Rules by Sharon Dukett is an insightful memoir, and it's now available! Get your copy today!⁣ •⁣ •⁣ It’s 1971 in Connecticut, and sixteen-year-old Sharon’s parents think that, because she’s a girl, she should become a clerical office worker after high school and live at home until she marries and has a family. But Sharon wants to join the hippies and be part of the changing society, so she leaves home and heads to California.⁣ ⁣ Upon arriving in California, Sharon is thrown into an adult world for which she is unprepared, and she embarks on a precarious journey amid the 1970s counterculture. On her various adventures across the country and while living on a commune, with friends and lovers filtering in and out of her life, she realizes she must learn quickly in order to survive—as well as figure out a way to reconcile her developing spirituality with her Catholic upbringing. ⁣ ⁣ In this colorful memoir, Sharon reflects upon the changes that reshaped her during the 1970s women’s movement, and how they have transformed society’s expectations for girls and women today—and, through it all, shares moments of triumph, joy, love, and awakening.⁣ •⁣ •⁣ #popupbooktour #popuptour #booksparks #booksharks #memoir #norules #sharondukett #notyouraveragebookspam #booktasharks #bookstababesx3 #booklover #booktour #bookstagram #bibliophile #booksonbooks #newbooks #bookworm #tbr #booklover #bookpost #bookish #bookaddicted #booknerd

Happy pub day to The Dragons The Giant The Women. This memoir by Wayétu Moore recounts Moore's escape from civil-war-stricken Liberia and her arrival to the US as well as her adjustment as a black immigrant in Texas and her eventual return to her native country. I'm about 20 pages into the book and I'm really excited because I have to admit that my knowledge of Liberia is practically non-existent so this book will help me discover a lot of new things. It seems to be a powerful, well written book. Best of luck!

“And so to challenge the police is to challenge the American people who send them into the ghettos armed with the same self generated fears that compelled the people who think they are white to flee the cities and into the Dream. The problem with the police is not that they are fascist pigs but that our country is ruled by majoritarian pigs” - @tanehisipcoates

Our upcoming course, WRITING AND WALKING IN MEMOIR AND CREATIVE NONFICTION with @poetdina, presents nonfiction writers with a unique opportunity. In this time of #covid19, most of this class will meet via Zoom. Students will walk on their own with specific assignments and writing prompts. This opens us up to the possibilities of sharing this class with walking writers around the globe, observing both our vastly different experiences and our commonalities. Along with the usual questions posed by writing and walking, we will of course reflect on walking in the age of COVID-19 and on our changing environments. 😷✍️ Class runs on Mondays, June 22 to July 27, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. It is suited for students with some essay-writing experience. All participants must follow the required safety protocols in their areas. There is so much going on in the world and our country right now that is unfathomable and wrong.⠀ ⠀ I'd like to think that I wasn't sitting on the sidelines, but whether or not I was is not important. What IS important is that there are ways that I can get up from the sidelines now and help - help bring change and hopefully help bring healing. ⠀ ⠀ And bring hope. Let's also make room for hope.⠀ ⠀ My latest blog post - My heart is aching (link in bio) https://www.lisakohnwrites.com/2020/06/01/my-heart-is-aching/ ⠀ ⠀ #tothemoonandback #thoughtfulleaders #chooselove #chooseloveoverfear #choosejoy #thereishope #choosehope #ichooselove #ichoosejoy #alanon #alanonfamilygroups #recovery #recoverycommunity #codependency #codependentnomore #boundariesarehealthy #memoir #amwritingmemoir #womenwhowrite #womenwritersofinstagram #womenwriters #writewritewrite #writersonig #writersofig #cnf #creativenonfiction #writinglife #writerslife #writerslifeforme #cultsurvivor

Happy Book Birthday, @MollyMHuffman! Friends, you NEED to go buy this book. I read it all in one day (technically 2 days because I stayed up WAY past my bedtime because I just couldn't stop). This one will be going up on my shelf next to Shauna Niequist's Bittersweet, C.S. Lewis' A Grief Observed, and Kate Bowler's Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I've Loved. The Moon Is Round explores all of the deep questions of faith that haunt me in my roughest seasons. Molly writes with raw, vulnerable honesty as she takes you on her journey of Job-like tragedy AND Job-like redemption. And I laughed out loud at a certain story that involved her dad and a pair of scissors (you need to read it. Seriously.) I could go on and on. Just read it! #memoir #christianauthor #christianwriter #christiancreative #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #booksbooksbooks #booklove #booklover #grief #faith #Christianbooks #TheMoonIsRound

Student Teacher (The Women I Love) After the teacher left the class, the guy sitting down behind me was angry with me. He had been trying to get me to share the answer with him, but because there was a higher probability of me getting caught, I had refused. I told him him that as much as it was risky to have tried sharing the answer with him, I had no obligation to actually do it. This got him really stoked. He began calling me vile and abusive names, saying I was a “woman wrapper” and was being used by the girls. Hello! I, woman wrapper? Gladly, please. If girls of the caliber of Ruth and Naomi were willing to be “wrapped” by me, what else am I doing with my life if not to be a “woman wrapper”? The Friday following that incident, I was in the class during the break time. I hardly ever went out for break. This boy came in from playing football. He went out of his way to step on my feet as he walked by. Knowing he was only interested in mischief-making, I ignored him. He walked past me and stopped. He walked back and asked me why I kicked his leg. I laughed and ignored him. He tapped me on my shoulder and started to get louder. He was making a scene. I got out of my chair and stepped right into his face. He was a couple of inches taller than me and did tower over me. It took a lot of courage for me to keep responding to him. At this point, the class had gathered around us. Ruth and Naomi came in right about this time. Ruth tried to defuse the situation but he was having none of it. He kept getting in her face and using cuss words at her. When I tried to get him to leave her alone, he decided to get physical with me. I saw him lift his hands to either shove me or punch me. I am still not sure. All I know was that in the slowest of slow motions, I saw Naomi raised her left hand and punch him square in the face. He collapsed in a heap and the whole class screamed. ART AT HOME: A memoir functions much like a photograph album, a series of figurative snapshots, each evoking a specific memory. In this tutorial -- a preview to our December workshop -- learn from author Gary Jones how it is not a chronological autobiography, but rather a composite, like pointillism dots, and the farther a reader steps back, the more the entire picture comes into focus. https://shakeragalley.org/art-at-home-gary-jones/ #artathome #shakeragalley #artsandcrafts #workshop #tutorial #memoir #literaryarts #mineralpoint #mineralpointwi #wisconsin

"...Pretty soon we were walking on one of the main highways into Burgos underneath a bright blue, cloudless sky. It was getting warm, but there was a coolish breeze which made it comfortable. Trucks and cars belched by and smokestacks rose in the distance like middle fingers aimed at god, proclaiming man’s naïve and brief dominion over the heavens and earth. Yes, these modern contrivances provide us with the pleasures of the here and now in this nihilistic world we live in, but after experiencing life on a more simple level over the past week, I flinched at man’s work, spewing the noise and stench of the world I’d left behind". -Mark West, "All Roads Lead Home- Life, Love, and Forgiveness on the Camino de Santiago" Photo: Near Villasbariego #markwestwriter #amwriting #caminodesantiago #writerstag #spain #allroadsleadhome #memoir #MemoirChat #NonFiction #midlife #mindfulness #gratitude #selfimprovement #selflove #onlygoodthings #bepositive #somegoodnews

In my book, 'An Open Diary', by Lysse (available on Amazon), I talk about how I was able to travel a few years ago, and be hosted by amazing people in Germany, but also in other European countries such as Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, etc. It changed my life and I want to say a big #thankyou 🙏🙏 to the @couchsurfing #community for that. . Solo travelling at a young age is not always comfortable or easy and can be pretty scary at times. But one lesson I've learned is, although you shouldn't trust everyone all the time, there are still (and hopefully will always be) a lot of people out there who will dare to host you in their homes, care about you even if you'd never met them before, take care about you for free, and make sure you're having a great time, just because they want you to have fun, feel safe, and appreciate their culture, country, city. Big applause for those people 👏 they are true kind souls that make the world a better place. 🌏🌎🌍 . When some people see the world as a place where you need to 'fight or die', 'only rely on yourself', i find the couchsurfing community to help me believe that it's okay to help and be helped. Life is a journey that can be pretty lonely if you isolate yourself in fear; trusting others, getting helped, and receiving care from other people is not shameful. Let's all acknowledge that random acts of kindness exist and that not everyone is evil. If you get a 'bad experience' once, doesn't mean this world is simply 100% horrible. The world is not this dark place only composed by cold individuals. . . Even if we see horrible things done to people everywhere, I think it's important to acknowledge the existence and the growth of global kindness. Let's keep hope and faith in humanity. 🌍🌎🌏 . . Thanks to technology, we can try to build together a global sense of community with more and more love. . #chooseloveoverfear #globalcitizen #travel #safe #memories #memoir #love #solidarity #globetrotter #globe #appreciation #kindness #kindnessmatters #thankful #friendship #fears #hippie #couchsurfing #peace #book #hope #thoughts #beliefs #believe #compassion #empathy

“..PVPolytechnic - SNDT University..” My interest in the subjects grew from the second year as I sat through the classes of history of indian and world costume , Dyeing and printing , draping and pattern cutting . Working with different mediums of fabrics and techniques that were challenging was something I loved doing like combining Lycra with vinyl , where after multiple failures of trying to construct the garment I learnt from the mochi outside the college gate that I would need to use adhesive to glue the vinyl to lycra and leaves the edges unfinished . Draping was one of my favourite subjects and the practice using any medium that I could lay my hands on be it foil , plastic flowers or even feather gave me a path of creativity that I follow up until this day . Graduating with good grades, two best designer awards, knowledge in styling and makeup from Hemant working with him on shows gave me a lot lot of experience and in-depth knowledge and an offer to assist Hemant in teaching Fashion Styling..” . #milestones #memories #memoir #memoirs #journey #inspiration #neetalulladiaries #stayhome #staysafe #nonfiction #writersofinstagram #writing #booksofinstagram #writers #history #love #amwriting

One day when I was in first grade, we came back from lunch and everything was different than normal. All the kids with blue eyes got to sit in the front of the class, got to have snacks during story time, got to give the teacher a hug; they had so much privilege, that I, as a brown-eyed first grader did not have. My brown-eyed classmates and I had to sit in the back, watch the blue-eyed kids eat their snacks, and weren’t allowed to hug our beloved Miss Winfey. Just because of something that we were born with and was completely out of our control. That was for an hour when I was six. That is the only experience I have with being treated differently because of something that was completely out of my control. I am not going to pretend that an hour when I was six even compares to what black people experience on a daily basis, not even close. That is not at all what I am trying to say. But I am grateful that from a young age I was taught about racism. When you know better you do better, and that lesson in first grade, those feelings of shame and judgement are something I will never forget, and something I have tried to never make someone else feel, for any reason, but especially because of the color of their skin, or the shape of their eyes, or the texture of their hair. These things are something I am trying to teach Charlotte, and although this is small in the grand scheme of things, it makes me a proud momma that her favorite baby doll Cici looks different than her, and that she doesn’t even notice. That at three all she sees is love, not color. I know this doesn’t mean much, but to anyone out there hurting right now, I am sorry. I am sorry people have been terrible to you because of the color of your skin. I am sorry people have looked at you with hate, rather than love. I am sorry when you go on a walk or get pulled over, your first reaction is fear, not peace. I am sorry. Please know that you are loved. SO LOVED! And this momma is trying to do her best to teach her kids a different way. ⠀

Jaquira Diaz’s brutal honesty and survival are inspiring. There is no way to read this book without feeling all the emotion and emptiness that Jaquira felt and not want to jump through the pages and time to get to her, to help her… Just a sneak peak at my review of Jaquira Diaz’s Ordinary Girls. You can read my full review on June 18th. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it. It’s a heart breakingly, beautiful memoir about Jaquira Diaz’s difficult childhood and adolescence and that we are not defined by the worst things we’ve done in our lives. @jaquiradiaz @algonquinbooks #ordinarygirls #memoir #jaquiradiaz #whitingawards #books #reading #reviews #blogtour #nowinpaperback #recommend

Thank you to @readersfavoritecom for this wonderful 5-star review. Launch day 6/19! (Although I just learned the book is available to download now on Kindle). #amwriting #indieauthor #writerslife #writingcommunity #nonfiction #book #amreading #kindle #author #memoir BOOK REVIEW Reviewed by Gobi Jane for Readers' Favorite The King and the Quirky: A Memoir of Love, Marriage, Domesticity, Feminism, and Self by Heather Siegel is one hell of a memoir, one of the best I have read about marriage and what it takes to make it work, and also about the journey towards personal transformation. When the reader meets thirty-four-year-old Heather Siegel, she is an outgoing kind of person who enjoys what she’s been doing for 10 years, a confident and independent woman who is free-spirited. She doesn’t believe in romantic relationships. But all of that changes when she meets Jon, a man who is as ordered as he is logical. They have two opposite personalities and they defy everything one can think of when it comes to compatibility. Heather, the feminist, finds herself packing up and moving out to Long Island to embrace a life of marriage. What makes it work is the subject matter of this engrossing memoir. The first thing that struck me as I started reading this memoir is Heather Siegel’s beautiful voice and unique writing style. Her highly descriptive prose is littered with wit and insight, and the humor spices up the writing, giving the reader a fun experience. While Heather shares her story from being a happy and independent woman and feminist to becoming a married woman and stay-at-home mom, she challenges readers through her experience and personal transformation to rethink their take on compatibility and chemistry in relationships. There is more than that for a relationship to work. I enjoyed her creativity in staying true to who she is and the way she uses tolerance, understanding, and acceptance to bring life and strength to her marriage and her home. The King and the Quirky is both inspiring and entertaining, filled with lessons and wisdom. You can’t put it down, and while you laugh through some of the passages, you’ve got to think about your own relationship.

🐙 Do NOT go by the beautiful cover of this book or even its blurb because this one is NOT WORTH your time! 🐙 . 🔷 First, We Make the Beast Beautiful by Sarah Wilson is a memoir and a self-help book for the people who struggle with anxiety. According to its blurb, it is a very useful and well-researched book which will help people to form a new relationship with anxiety and thrive with it. . 🔷I struggle with anxiety, so I was looking forward to learn from the author's experiences. The only good thing about this book is that the author voices her vulnerabilities openly which is commendable and brave. . 🔷However, the narrative is chaotic and there is no structure to it because the author's thoughts and scientific facts are jumbled together. Random people are quoted throughout the book so the reliability of their statements is questionable. . 🔷I would have ignored all that if the book had something substantial to offer. The useful information in this book can easily be compiled in less than 5 pages. . 🔷Also, there are certain things which are absolutely dangerous and even problematic. Two of them are: 1. The author simply quits her therapy without completing it and she goes on to preach her own theory to the readers. It might have worked for her but it can be pretty dangerous for others. . 2. The author comments that people can take advantage of their anxious friends by giving them certain responsibilities because anxious people tend to overthink about everything and that way, they will know about every possible thing that could go wrong. I mean, seriously? It's pathetic on a human level! . 🔷I guess the only people who liked or will like this book are the ones who have NEVER struggled with anxiety!! . . #firstwemakethebeastbeautiful #firstwemakethebeastbeautiful💫 #sarahwilson #anxiety #anxietyawareness #selfhelpbooks #bookstagramfeature #communityovercompetition #bookporn #bookcommunity #bookfeaturepage #booktography #readmore #booksarelife #booklovers #unitedbookstagram #readerlife #bookaesthetic #mybookishfeatures #readinglove #donotread #badbooks #unpopularopinions #disappointingread #anxietyproblems #selfcarebooks #memoir #bluebooks #bookflatlay

What I read in May. I read #MakeYourBed years ago, and I just read it again. The lofty yet simple message in this book is what we need right now, at this moment when our country is literally burning before our eyes. These wise words from Admiral William McRaven about respect, both for self and others, and a focus on a picture bigger than ourselves, could steer us to sanity and stability again. Buy it, read it, give it to everyone you know, especially young people. #ZadieSmith is such a wonderful writer! NW is the 2nd novel of hers I read, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the others. She is SMART. #EverythingIsUnderControl by Phyllis Grant is a great read, especially for @dashandbella fans who feel like they have known Phyllis for a long time. You can fill in some blanks here. Here’s to books!

Syed Mujtaba Ali was a leading figure in the twentieth century Bengali literature. A polymath, and an extraordinary scholar, his 'Deshe Bideshe' is a classic travelogue and documents his journey across Afghanistan in the end of the 1920s, capturing the history and geopolitical movement of that period. Translated by @afroznazes as ‘In a Land Far from Home: A Bengali in Afghanistan’ the book is published by @speakingtiger and was shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award in 2016. #syedmujtabaali #mujtabaali #deshebideshe #inalandfarfromhome #bengaliliterature #memoir #nonfiction #travelwriting #travelogue #speakingtigerbooks #readintranslation #foundintranslation #translationtuesday

Every writer I know is an avid reader and most read broadly across genres and cultures. The more you read, the more you see how an author puts their story together, how they create dialog, what details they use in scenes, where they start the chapter or how they end the book. Read deeply--everything an author has written. Read broadly -- literary fiction, memoir, nonfiction, graphic, poetry and Poetic License was forged from every one of those genres. #poeticlicense #memoir #writingtips #read #books #authorlife #lifeofanauthor #writing #editing #publishing #debutauthors2020 #supportanauthorbuyabook #authorsofinstagram

We love this quote by @ericawiggenhorn . As writers, it is inauthentic to try and take a reader farther than we have been ourselves. . As people it is inauthentic to expect more from others than we do ourselves. . When you think about the legacy you want to leave in this world, consider whether or not it is coming from the way you truly live. If it’s not, what will you do to change that?

Desk from the old greenhouse transformed to a new place to study, plan, write, grade papers. Huge assist from my always-willing-to-help husband, Tom. Hard to let go of how cool and antiquey the reddish cracked paint looked, but we are hoping this paint chips a little, too, and soon enough that old-fashioned look will be back. So cool what a little spray paint and contact paper can do! #drbabe #doctoralstudent #teacherlife #pandemicprojects #greenhouse #meadeacres #ramshacklegarden #backyardgarden #backyardchickens #ramshackledesk #deskrestoration #writersofinstagram #memoir #chanceofrain #writersofig #writerproblems #contactpaper #lookslikenew #antique #antiquedesk #thelightworks Thanks, babe! ❤️@southpawkaraoke

Book review 10 of 2020: Born a crime by @trevornoah . 🇿🇦 This beautiful book is a collection of stories from the life of Trevor Noah, a famous stand-up comedian and a TV host, who is from South Africa. Mixed with insights abt the country, language, culture and his family. . 🇿🇦 Those of you who haven't seen his standup pls watch, especially his impersonation of people from different countries and their accents is always hilarious. . 🇿🇦 Now to the book, he grew up in a stage when Apartheid was prevelant in South Africa, being a mixed race kid his struggles and the conviction of his mother to raise him up with love and care is beautifully portrayed in this book. . 🇿🇦 Such a hilarious and friendly narration it has, no grammatical constructs followed which actually makes the book quite interesting. If you have listened to Trevor earlier, this book would feel like a 10 hr date with him listening to all his stories, laughing with him, giggling with him, being a part of his pranks, cuddling when he was down, embracing his mother.. . 🇿🇦 Narrative style is very different, feels repetitive at times. Sometimes he tells a story when he was 6 yrs suddenly a story when he was 10 and suddenly a grown up, this was the only one which slowed down a bit just a tiny bit. . 🇿🇦 Beautiful life lessons but such a hilarious one, makes us appreciate the privileges we have and to look forward to life always. A MUST-Read recommendation, much better with audio version along. I hugged the book after finishing. Just loveddddd it. 😊 . #bookrecommendations #booksfor2020 #bookstagram #trevornoah #lovethisbook #booksforlife #memoir
