A few Weeks ago I was going manic. I was buzzing 24/7 running around. I was smiling and laughing at everything. I stopped sleeping and had the most tidiest house I’ve had in a long way. I also became irritable and short tempered. I was also starting to feel all the emotions at once in me. Basically all the classic signs of going rapid cycling mainly manic. My doctor placed me on a fair amount of medication to stop me going so manic and manic cycling. It brought me back to earth. I could breath and think normal. It was paradise. Sadly all this week I have been feeling like crying. I feel empty inside. I feel like I have no purpose. I’m just floating. It’s like I have no heart. And my anxiety has just been going insane working hand in hand with my depression telling me I’m nothing. I knew this was only going to get a lot worse. So I left work early to see a Doctor. We have adjusted all my medication. Fingers crossed in to days I’ll feel like myself again. So over feeling worthless, sad and tearful.

People with mental illness who don’t work for a living, because they’re too unwell to work, get judged to hell by small minded, ignorant people, and they often think we’re doing nothing all day and “lazy”... they couldn’t be more wrong. What goes on in our heads, and having physical symptoms from our mental health problems or disorders. Also being on a range of medication. It all makes me exhausted at the end of the day. I wake up in the wee hours of the morning because of the traumatic nightmares I experience. I take my meds, feel ok, but go downhill as the day goes on. By 5pm I just want to go to bed because I’m very, very tired, drowsy and also, I just don’t want to feel what I’m feeling anymore. Emotions are exhausting. Crying is exhausting. Severe anxiety is exhausting. Thank you for sticking with me if you read all of that, but it’s the damn truth, and STOP asking people like me what we do all day! This is a quote from Lady Hale 👩‍⚖️ during the infamous Cheshire West case where permanent changes to UK legislation ⚖️ had to be made around DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards). DoLS is part of the Mental Capacity Act but due to be replaced by LPS (Liberty Protection Safeguards) by October 2020. . . . Lady Hale was basically saying that just because a care setting where someone is living is lovely 🏠, doesn’t mean it is not depriving of them of their human rights, if you would sill stop them leaving if they tried. It is not applicable to someone in their own home. She developed the Acid Test. . . . Recently I have felt a little stifled, trapped like a bird 🦜and I can’t stand it. My personality type (do a Myer’s Briggs test if you’d like to learn more about yourself) is free and creative and if I don’t get to express that it quickly leaves me depressed 🙁and wanting to escape. . . . For such a big chunk of my life I suffered with severe depression, anxiety and panic attacks, so if I want to wear a beautiful dress to take photos in, I don’t care and I sure as hell will. I don’t go up in helicopters with my boyfriend all the time, but I do sometimes, and sometimes we stay in bed all day eating. My partners crazy has to match my crazy and god help the man who marries me because I'm a special kind of crazy 😈😂😈🕷🦇🕸 It's important to be with somebody who can accept me for all I am, warts-and-all. I have been in a few relationships where there was absolutely no compatibility and I stayed in them because I was that terrified of being alone and I had that much self-hatred that I saw no other option. I've also been a relationship that were wonderful and loving, and they made an effort to learn about me and my mental illnesses. They made an effort to help me and soothe me when things went wrong. It's vital that you and your partner find a middle ground and an understanding whether they have a mental illness, you have a mental illness or you both have a mental illness. "I'm so hot" used to be how my body looked. Now it's how my body feels. 😳⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ NO ONE prepared me...not even the docs...for menopause. Woulda been nice had any doc prepped me for incredible weight gain within a year, a muffin top that's more like a self-rising lump of dough, blistering internal heat, emotions like a rickety rollercoaster, cog fog, bloating, irritation, crying spells, exhaustion, etc. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ WTF happened to my body??⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ My new doc is much better than any before. He explained that MANY women from the 1970-era have NO FLIPPING IDEA what's happening to them during perimenopause or menopause. And he's right. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Some mommas born in the post WWII era had trouble with talking about concepts like sex or periods. They were often ill-prepared by THEIR mothers and it just continued generationally. So, there was no way I'd be getting any info of what would happen in another 40 or so years. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The doc explained that, in a nutshell, the estrogen is packing up and heading out. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ AND...get this. He says that women struggle so much during this time to get done what they used to and manage everything because--in a way--the estrogen and what makes them female is bugging out and in a way...they're becoming a tad more like men and can't do all the shit they used to without feeling overwhelmed. ha! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ He's going to walk me through the process and says that despite not being an expert, he's willing to learn along with me. Respect for that for sure. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ So...bottom line? Get yourself a doc that listens and can explain things to you so you understand. Also...I hear ya in your suffering. As a doula my priority is to support the woman, but I believe it’s really important to support the newborn dads too, as very often their needs are overlooked . Becoming a parent is a time of huge adjustment and can be very exciting but also overwhelming for all . As well as the support I will give you as a doula, there are support groups I can signpost you too, such as @bluebellcare who have a monthly meet up for dads in Bath and Bristol, called Dads in Mind . “What will people say?” the four words that infuriated me, even as a young child.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I would ask my mom “Who are these people that we are living our lives for?” (Needless to say, that didn’t go over very well).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And no matter what I did, people said stuff anyway - so I figured that I might as well live my life by being true to myself and give them something interesting to talk about. Back then, in my adolescent self-centeredness, I did many things without thinking about who else would be impacted by my actions. I didn’t know that you could be good, kind and true to your values and still hurt so many people. This is when I learned that culture and religion often don’t see eye to eye.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, I did those things because I have always felt intensely, and so, listening to my heart was never a luxury or an option. I wasn’t trying to be authentic, courageous, hurtful or rebellious - I was just living life in a way that felt true to me (and ‘those people’ definitely did not approve!). It’s that way of doing things that lead me to be the person I am today. I got it right sometimes, I got it wrong many times - but I lived my truth all the time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, I will pass on a different message to my children.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will tell my children:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Not to listen to ‘what people will say’ and, if my fears get the best of me, to not even listen to me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Please make lots of mistakes and always learn from them this is called experience.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Try things and get them wrong.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Decide one thing and then feel free to change your mind.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Never chase anything but your life’s longing - not money, nor happiness..nothing but your life’s longing. -Listen to your Self. Social media is very dangerous, especially for those who have created a well-polished persona, or over-identified with that part of themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once it becomes a paid position, or you taste the high of likes and followers, it takes on a life of its own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When a person is overly identified with an image, they cannot possibly stay in touch with their real being. When a person is so focused on capturing the perfect picture or getting the most likes - their attention cannot possibly be inwards to where their truth is. When they have to post a video of them smiling or having the time of their life on a day that they are feeling tired and broken, it cannot help but create a warped sense of reality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On the flip side, there are some people who have created accounts to share their mental illness or their suffering, and when they no longer feel that way, they may feel they have to stay identified with that part of themselves and keep feeding their suffering. Why? because “people stopped ‘liking’ me when my posts were not dark enough.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is obviously destructive and soul-eating for people in their teens and 20s who are still developing their identity, but I have seen people in their 30s and 40s lose themselves in the matrix. So, now what we have is two generations (and counting) of people who have a very fragile sense of self. ‘Know thyself’ has been replaced with ‘show thyself’. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And please don’t say ‘not me’ because the minute you say that…it will be you.
