The western knight of Europe is synonymous with his mighty warhorse in popular culture. They would valiantly gallop into the enemy, a tidal wave of bristling steel into the infidel Saracens. Everyone likes to talk about the rider, a man clad in armour with a lance couched under his arm, but what about that poor horse?! ▪▪▪ In England and France in the 13th Centuries, there would be programs to breed better warhorses and breeds from Spain,Lombardy and the Low countries would be imported for this. An English Knight could pay £25 for a good warhorse. A knight earnt on average perhaps £40 a year. So that is over 50% of his dough spent on a horse. I believe this is from an evaluation of mid 1300s horse inventory. Anyway such horses were about 150 to 160cm tall, I assume measured at the shoulder because that is the most logical way to measure it. Furthermore the price of the horse could often highlight the hierarchy within the military elite. After all you had esquires whose horses were valued at 49 livres tournois, whereas the dauphin de Viennois could have a horse worth 12 times more at 600 livres tournois. This data comes from the records of losses at the battle of Cassel in 1328. ▪▪▪ So as you can see, horses were costly, and also huge status symbols. Now a question must be asked, why were they so expensive? Well raising and breeding horses is no easy job. You must breed the best to get the best. As good historians we shall than ask another question, why would you then import a horse from Spain for breeding? Isn't this just extra £££ needed? Well, let us take Spain. Not literally as the muslims did. Sorry bad joke. What I mean to say is that the Spaniards had come into contact with the very good horses from the Moors, the Arabian horse being a prominent one. This meant that the Spanish had a very rich breeding stock themselves which they sold for others to breed with. Charles of Anjou, would proclaim:" all the sense of Spain is in the heads of horses". This is meant to showcase their high reputation. #Medieval #Knights #Middleages #Medievalera #Darkages #Templars #Crusades #Constantinople #Franks #Rome #Europeanhistory #Islam #Christianity #Horses #Animals #militaryhistory

The Unknown Knight of Welton (c1270) - the Church of St Helen, Welton, #Yorkshire This #medieval tomb effigy is made of a rare British marble which would have been an expensive commodity in the middle ages. To afford such luxuries, it's safe to say the knight was likely a man of some importance. Although it is almost impossible to pin down his identity, some historians have suggested he may have been a member of the #KnightsTemplar. It's a common mistake for amateur historians to claim similar tombs represent #Templar Knights. It's far more likely for a knight effigy to depict a local lord or noblemen. However, we know the Order of the Temple was well established in #EastYorkshire. In particular there was a lost Templar priory in North Ferriby as well as a lost headquarters at Faxfleet. So it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the Unknown Knight was moved to Welton from one of these earlier sites. Particularly as Victorian records note the tomb was to be recycled as flooring before it found its current home. Sadly this was often the fate of old memorials. #Knight #GraveMarker #Marble #Purbeck #Grave #MedievalChurch #MedievalSculpture #MiddleAges #Tomb #GraveYard #BritishHistory #EastRiding #Photography #TemplarKnight

Been looking forward to this amazing woman! Christine de Pizan (1364 – c. 1430) was an Italian and French author. She is best remembered for defending women in The Book of the City of Ladies and The Treasure of the City of Ladies. Christine was a prominent moralist and political thinker in medieval France. Christine's patrons included Louis of Orleans, Philip the Bold and John the Fearless. She served as a court writer during the reign of Charles VI. Her books of advice to princesses, princes and knights remained in print until the 16th century. She published 41 known pieces of poetry and prose in her lifetime and she gained fame across Europe as the first professional woman writer. She achieved such credibility that royalty commissioned her prose and contemporary intellectuals kept copies of her works in their libraries. . . . . . #christinedepizan #14thcentury #medievalwomen #middleages #womenauthors #amazingwomen #badasswomen #womenshistory #womenwriters #feministhistory #herstory #embroideryinstaguild #embroideryproject #sewingproject #stitchersofinstagram #embroiderersofinstagram #hennin #craftivism #rebelwomenembroidery

a woman of at least very questionable reputation. In the tradition known as 'Fair Maid of Kent',even if this name of hers was not known during her lifetime. So who was she? JOAN OF KENT (1328-1385),Princess of Wales,Princess of Aquitaine,Countess of Salisbury,Countess of Kent,Baroness Wake of Liddell. She was daughter of Edmund of Woodstock,Son of Edward I, and Margaret Wake.In 1340,at the tender age of 12, she fell in love with 26-years old Thomas Holland,Seneschal of Earl of Salisbury and she MARRIED him, secretly, without license, without knowledge of her parents. But as proved later, marriage was valid and fulfilled.Shortly after the wedding, Holland left for the continent where he was part of English expedition to Flanders and France.During his absence,in 1341,the parents of Joan arranged a marriage for her. With the son and heir of Earl of Salisbury,William Montacute who was of Joan's age.Joan said not a word about her marriage to Holland. Most probably because she was afraid he would be executed for the treason,if she revealed the truth. So Joan married Montacute who entered the marriage in good will and glad to have obtained the rich and reputedly very beautiful bride.Anyway,in 1348 Thomas Holland returned from the French campaign home and he found out that Joan is now married to another man.He confessed the marriage to Joan to the King Edward III and appealed to the Pope for return of his wife.Joan's second husband Salisbury was outraged and kept Joan confined to his home.In 1349 but a humiliation for Salisbury came from the Pope Clement VI who annulled Joan's marriage to Earl of Salisbury and ordered Joan to go back to Thomas Holland and to live as his lawful wife which Joan did.William Montacute was humiliated and dismayed, chagrined when he found out that his beautiful wife of 8 years also expressed eagerly her wish to return to Holland and to live with him.Thomas became Earl of Kent in the right of his wife. Joan and Thomas then lived for 11 next years together till his death in 1360 and they had 5 children: 3 sons and 2 girls.Marriage no3 in the comments #history #historian #historylover #plantagenets #medieval #kent #middleages #england #hundredyearswar
