MIES MISSING MATERIALITY.

Project Name: Mies Missing Materiality Architects: Anna & Eugeni Bach The Barcelona Pavilion was designed by Mies van der Rohe for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. Disassembled in 1930, the Pavilion became a symbol not only of Mies’ architecture but also of twentieth-century architecture as a whole. Anna and Eugeni Bach were invited by the Fundacio Mies van der Rohe to reinterpret and reflect upon this iconic rebuilt Pavilion. Their intervention, « Mies Missing Materiality », consists of the cladding of the Pavilion in white vinyl panels in order to « strip it of all materiality ». In this way, Anna and Eugeni Bach strip the Pavilion of its unique and essential characteristics - its materiality. This experimental temporary intervention redefines the experience of the Pavilion, renewing the potential of the space for an experiential revival. Furthermore, the use of the color white ties to the use of this color as a defining feature of twentieth-century historiography.
