If we allow ourselves to come back to our experience in the present moment, we are better able to tame thoughts and questions about the future that often fuel anxiety and stress. Present moment awareness allows us to find grounding and balance. It also allows us to better recognize our needs in any given moment. By tapping into our present experience, we are better able to know what we might need (to breath? to move? to talk to someone?) in an given moment. ⨠ Take a moment to check in with your current setting, body and mind. What are your senses detecting right now? What is your body telling you? What are you feeling? Notice what comes up for you just as it is, without asking yourself why or trying to change it. Try noticing your breath. Notice your experience- both internal and external- just as it is in this moment. Start here. This experience is just enough. at New York, New York

Been thinking a lot about the tendency to “fix” feelings lately. As someone who has always wanted to problem-solve away pain and hurt, I know all about the desire to seek control around our experiences. Seeking control is a natural response to fear and uncertainty. As humans, our efforts to seek control are endless. Sometimes this look like ruminating on the “what-if’s” or trying to avoid the feelings entirely through numbing and escapism. As much as we want to problem solve the harder-to-hold emotions, attempts at controlling or fixing our feelings and experiences usually doesn’t make us feel better. The truth is, we can’t always control what we feel or what we experience. Our agency lies in our ability to respond to adverse emotions and experiences as they arise, as opposed to reacting with efforts to control the uncontrollable. I’m very passionate about getting Mindfulness in schools, and believe it’s just a matter of time before it will be required learning for children and young adults. My Institute @theiftt offers Mindfulness Training for students, teachers, faculty and parents. I recently taught it to a group of club leaders at a private school in LA, and what I saw was amazing. These young adults soaked it up like sponges, and it was very apparent to me that by learning Mindfulness skills, they not only can be so much better at self-regulating, but can help make them the next generation of Mindful leaders, which is much needed today. Evolution gave us a huge brain, but it arrives here with no instruction manual. It’s a complicated machine, with buttons and levers and alarms that often are self-starting. And it never powers down. Sunday calls for grounding and restoration. A simple body scan practice can help you connect with your mind and body. ⨠ Find a comfortable seat. Bring your eyes to close, or lower your gaze and find a spot on the ground in front of you. Start by bringing your attention to your toes. Notice what each body part feels like in this moment. Busy or calm? Loud or quiet?Energized or fatigued? Slowly bring your attention to other parts of your body, moving up from your toes, to your feet, legs, stomach, arms and head. Gently notice how your body feels in this moment. ⨠ Try it a second time, this time inviting your body to become a little more of whatever you need right now. This weekend I’m in Petaluma sharing Trauma-Informed Mindfulness & Radical Self-Care with educators. But I’m reflecting on last week when I started each day at a middle school with a morning assembly on Mindfulness. 150 kids at a time, reaching the full student body. Sharing with them what they already know...that teens tend to experience more stress than adults especially during the school year, that stress and big emotions tend to overwhelm us, and that mindfulness is a tool to help when things get too big. . . We practiced five-finger breath, elevator breath, volcano breath, lumberjack breath, and they were even game for lion’s breath (some of the 8th graders were too cool...)🦁 . . This is the part of my job I love. When I’m stressed or overwhelmed myself, I pull into this space of sharing. Each of us is responsible to help the next generation get where they’re going. I can't express how much I loooove this rainbow mindfulness walk! 🌈🌈⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Once the weather turns to spring, it's time to get out for some fresh air and mindfulness! This mindfulness rainbow walk is one of our favorite activities, from my elementary kiddos to my 18-21 years olds. 🚶🚶‍♀️⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Super easy concept (which is one of the things I really love about it!), but we go on a walk (either in our school yard, or around our community/neighborhood) and students are challenged to work in order of the rainbow, and quietly record (draw or write) what they see in each color. Depending on the length of the walk, we may just do five colors, or we may work all the way through ten (looking for pink, black, white, etc!). When we get back to group, we share our different observations of what we found in each color. This was an AMAZING experience. The teachers and ESPECIALLY THE PRINCIPAL were so receptive and engaged. Usually, teaching in a gym is so challenging, it’s almost unsuccessful- not this one. Don’t be afraid to ask for help This is a lesson for life! Everyone learns at a difference pace and everyone is stronger in some areas than others. Your teachers are there to teach you and will be delighted that you asked. It’s also very likely that someone else is struggling too so you won’t be the only one to benefit. 🌿2. Download a mindfulness app These apps deserve more attention than they get. It might take you a little time to get used to practicing mindfulness, but these apps are so easy and pleasant to use that you’ll wonder why you didn’t embrace mindfulness sooner. Sit back, breathe and take a few moments to focus on you. 🌿3. Invite some friends for lunch or dinner There are many benefits of cooking, sharing and eating with friends as it increases the all-important sense of community, it gives a sense of belonging that soothes a person, and contributes to making every day more enjoyable. 🌿4. For study sessions, try the Tomato Timer You can open it in your internet browser, e.g. Google Chrome, and set the timer for a 25-minute session, after which it will advise you take a break of 5 minutes or more. So, it not only manages your work time, but reminds you to take breaks also. 🌿5. Get out and explore your new city Taking the time to get to know your new city will make you feel more at home. In fact, we offer English in the City courses in all of our city centre locations to get students out of the classroom twice a week and talk to locals, visit landmarks and discover the area as a local. A quick follow-up to my last post on connection. A moment of attunement to your internal experience might include checking in with your emotions and physical sensations in any given moment. Close your eyes. Notice your breath exactly as it is in this moment. Are you able to identify and feelings that come up for your right now? Try to greet those feelings with non-judgement and acceptance. Try saying, “I see that you’re sad/lonely/angry/anxious/______. It’s okay that you’re feeling that way right now.” You might also try asking yourself where in your body you feel those feelings. Try to locate the feeling(s) in your body. What are the sensations you’re experiencing? ⨠ Gentle reminder: it’s OK if this is hard for you. Sometimes our bodies and minds aren’t so clear in communicating with us. We might become disconnected as a result of overwhelming feelings or experiences. If you experience difficulty or frustration while doing this, pause. Take a breath. Try to focus on the physical sensations as a means of grounding. Be gentle with yourself. at New York, New York

Connection- to others, to self and to space- is a valuable healing agent. By heightening our own sense of internal connection, we are better able to connect to the world and people around us. Connection yields grounding and centering, while strengthening one's sense of purpose. Connection is an integrated process. It’s not static, but ever-evolving, shifting and changing. There are moments when connection to others and ourselves might feel very hard, and that’s okay. I have a peony tattooed on my arm. As a kid I learned through what seemed like inescapable loss and heartache and fear, that we can’t escape suffering. Healing and growth is a continuous journey. I held this belief, this “you need the darkness to see the light” mantra, close to my heart because it allowed me to find hope and meaning in the hurt. Later in life, during another moment of suffering in which I felt deeply alone, I leaned into the hurt. I had known pain before, and it had passed. Here I felt some hope. I remembered the same feeling of hope tied to a memory of seeing the peony’s in my garden in the spring growing up, awe-struck of their ability to grow following months of cold and shorter days. And yet, they always came back. Only after a harsh winter was I able to truly appreciate their beauty. I got the peony tattooed on my arm when it was still winter, uncertain of what was to come but still believing that all of it mattered. Spring came, brighter than ever, and so did the peony’s. When turning to mindfulness, we always want to be asking ourselves: what do I need in this moment? When we’re feeling especially anxious, frenetic and disconnected, movement-based practices, as opposed to a sitting meditation, can be especially nourishing and supportive. For those moments when you need some grounding, try a walking meditation. Take three minutes to walk an indoor or outdoor path, focusing on the sensations of your feet as you move. Can you feel the sensations of your feet touching the ground? Notice your pace exactly as it is. Bring intentionality to each step. When you mind wanders, bring it back to your feet. You’re walking. In case you’re wondering what Ashley is pouring every last bit of her energy into these days, here you have it. A couple years ago, I was only dreaming of planting a few seeds (i.e. teach as much free yoga in the community as possible, volunteer with every after-school program that will have me, teach these life skills in a studio setting where paying people might see the value, et.....), and hopefully one day I’d earn the opportunity to share my dream in school settings DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. Well, HERE WE ARE. I am in various district 186 schools (some, in multiple classrooms), as well as Glenwood Intermediate School, Glenwood Elementary School, and Rochester High School. I’m currently working out the final details to bring my program all the way to Decatur. Every fundraiser I’ve held that you’ve contributed to has seen to it that this little project grows and grows, and I’m beyond grateful to this community for it. We were designed for connection. When scientists nurture heart cells in a petri dish, the cells will begin to beat. When live cells from differing mammals are placed in the same dish, they will, in time, find and maintain a third beat. We need others to thrive. Connection-to ourselves, each other, the present moment-underlies all human endeavor. Mindful breathing is a great way to make that connection quickly and easily. Just stop what you’re doing and focus on your breath. Count the breath as it passes, silently counting “one” on the inhale and “two” on the exhale. Count all the way to 20; this will take about one minute, the time necessary to bio hack into your prefrontal cortex, where connection to the present moment lies. When you are connected to the present moment inwardly, you can turn outward to connect to those around you with compassion and empathy. #becalm #bekind #beproject #mindfulstaff #mindfulstudents #mindfulschools 🐝 🧠❤️

I utilize a mind-body approach to healing largely due to the value of movement. Movement helps us process adrenaline and other stress hormones. Thus, we can tend to our emotional health by also tending to our bodies. Movement also supports embodiment, a crucial part of trauma-focused healing. There’s so much power in connecting to the body as a means of self-awareness, grounding and regaining a vital sense of agency. Simply stretching or shaking out parts of the body can help us feel connected to our physical bodies and better process our emotional experiences. at New York, New York

Meditation doesn’t require an hour-long daily practice. Simply taking 1-3 minutes to pause and check-in with yourself is oftentimes just enough. Remember: you have agency over your practice. You get to decide what it looks like. If you bring your own sense-of-self to your practice, and truly tap into what your needs are in any given moment, it will become easier.
