🤔 What is Fitness? 🤓 You could define increasing fitness as the ability to do more work in the same time. That time might be a second or less, like in a throwing event. In that you are aiming to produce more force in that fraction of a second to throw the implement further. At the other end of the spectrum this is an image from one of my running athletes showing their biggest ever monthly mileage. More miles per month is more total work over a long period of time. Why is this important? Well this client came to me injured and having to take time off running. In the past year she's not had to have any time off running and so has sensibly accumulated the required tissue conditioning to be able to do MORE without getting hurt. You cannot do this by having passive therapies and resting. If you're being advised to rest injuries then you're being advised to get less 'fit', less conditioned, and are actually making the road back to performance longer and more difficult. Resting and deloading for sustained periods might actually INCREASE injury risks for a long time as you try to rebuild. This is one of the biggest aspects of my business. Supporting people to maintain their fitness whilst rehabilitating their injury. A holistic approach. It can be challenging. It goes against what people think they 'KNOW'. The proof is in the pudding. While a front rack is not the most common posturing during daily life, it is often neglected amongst athletes who are performing it with some regularity. . Which are you?👇🏼 ➖ Let's talk cardio & which is best, LISS or HIIT? ➖ •HIIT: High intensity interval training consisting of short sprint intervals coupled with low/moderate intensity work e.g. 20s sprint/1min walk •LISS: Low intensity steady state cardio consisting of purely low/moderate intensity work eg. walking on a treadmill ➖ Time: HIIT is an extremely time efficient way to train which can induce the same or sometimes even SUPERIOR changes in mitochondrial enzyme activity & whole body/skeletal muscle carb & fat metabolism to those induced by traditional longer endurance training (Burgomaster et al 2008, Tremblay 1994, Burgomaster et al 2005, Perry 2007) ➖ Fitness: Both HIIT & LISS have shown to increase endurance and VO2max however again, HIIT seems to be slightly superior (Foster et al 2015, Helgerud et al 2007) ➖ Fat loss: Though a kcals deficit is all you need for fatloss (Romieu 2017, Hill 2012), cardio definitely has a role. Both LISS & HIIT are effective at losing fat however HIIT has proven to produce a greater fat reduction effect relative to energy expenditure compared to LISS in many studies (Tremblay et al 1994, Trapp et al 2008) ➖ Muscle retention: HIIT seems to be superior for muscle retention with some studies showing increases in lean mass vs LISS (Wilson et al 2012, Trapp et al 2008). This is likely due to sprinting involving high intensity hip flexion & knee extension, similar to that during weight lifting and thus another way to overload & activate type 2 muscle fibres ➖ Problem: Most studies on HIIT are done in people who DON’T lift. However, lifting has shown to be very similar to HIIT in terms of overall intensity & EPOC (Greer et al 2015) meaning that if you lift regularly, you are ALREADY following a strenuous training protocol & additional HIIT may actually be detrimental by increasing recovery demands (Highton et al 2009) thus LISS may be more suitable ➖ Overall, both are effective for increasing fitness & fat loss so the 1 you pick is highly dependent on time availability, enjoyment & other variables . . . LEG UP FOR DOMS ⁣ I had a BIG leg sesh yesterday (hit two PRs 🤗🤩 no biggy) and didn’t have the best nights sleep (pre-workout is not to be underestimated) which is probably why I’m a tad bit sore today. Let’s talk DOMS: ⁣ ⁣ 💥DOMS = Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness essentially that achy OHHH MY GAWWD feeling when you try and get up, walk or climb stairs following a workout 😳😳😳⁣ ⁣ 💥DOMS comes about as a result of inflammation produced by microscopic tears in connective tissue that enhances feelings of pain ⁣ ⁣ 💥DOMS can kick in around 6-8 hours post exercise and usually peaks around 48 hours after you train (hence DELAYED)⁣ ⁣ 💥placing emphasis on the eccentric phase of exercise (when the muscle is lengthening eg downward phase of the squat) also contributes to the onset of DOMs ⁣ ⁣ 💥DOMS can be brought about by placing more stress on your muscles than they are used to. This can be effected by a sudden increase in training load, a new exercise or isolation of a specific muscle group. Your muscles will be like 😮 because they are not used to such a load or moving this way ⁣ ⁣ ⭐️TRAIN HARD 💪🏾 TRAIN SMART 🤓⁣ Mechanical tension, metabolic stress, and muscle damage (DOMS) are mechanisms that enable hypertrophy (muscle growth), with muscle damage being the least important. Focus on the quality of your training, ie mind to muscle connection, progressive overload and time under tension! ⁣ ⁣ ⭐️REMEMBER DOMS ISN’T THE KEY - you should not rely on it as an indication of a good session. Focus instead on things like hitting higher reps, pushing an extra set, increasing range of motion or whacking more weight on 🏋🏾‍♀️⁣ ⁣ SPEED UP RECOVERY AND REDUCE PAIN⁣ 🌈STRETCHHH to release tension and improve range of motion ⁣ 🌈MASSAGE & FOAM ROLLING again release that tension ⁣ 🌈DRINK WATER dehydration cause an increase in soreness ⁣ 🌈SLEEP to help with muscle repair ⁣ 🌈PROTEIN help your muscles recover, repair and BUILD ⁣ ⁣
